Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

During the American Civil War an estimated 194,000 Union soldiers and 214,000 Confederate soldiers became prisoners of war. No prior or subsequent American conflict has seen such numbers. During the Second World War, approximately 124,000 Americans were held captive, but the chance of being captured in that conflict was roughly one in one hundred; during the Civil War it was closer to one in five. Captivity was not a marginal experience. It was central to the war.Indeed, the gigantic scale of prisoner-of-war camps was one of the conflict's most consequential innovations. Every modern war since has produced successors to Andersonville, Point Lookout, Rock Island, and Florence. Yet prisoner-of-war camps remain oddly peripheral in our narratives of the Civil War, overlooked both as institutional innovations and as formative experiences for soldiers and their families. My guest, W. Fitzhugh Brundage, argues in A Fate Worse Than Hell: American Prisoners of the Civil War that captivity reshaped military policy, political rhetoric, racial attitudes, and postwar memory. Prison camps were not aberrations; they were integral to the modernizing logic of total war.For more on the guest, show notes, sources, and related episodes, go to the Historically Thinking Substack at www.historicallythinking.orgChaptersIntroduction - 0:00Historical Treatment of POWs - 2:35Parole System and Napoleonic Wars - 4:47Scale and Logistics of Civil War Prisons - 7:42Lincoln's Dilemma: Sovereignty vs Prisoner Exchange - 10:56Andersonville: Conditions and the Deadline - 31:48Point Lookout and Union Prisons - 47:25Prison Society and Community - 57:45Black Prisoners of War - 65:33Elmira Prison and John W. Moving To New Levels Of Growth

As part of the series Living Confidently in Times of Great Change, Isaiah 54:1–3 calls the people of God to prepare for expansion:“Sing, barren woman… burst into song… Enlarge the place of your tent… do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left…”These words were spoken to a people who saw themselves as captives and victims. Jerusalem had been destroyed, the temple ruined, and the nation scattered. Yet God declared that restoration and multiplication were coming. They were not to prepare for survival—but for growth.History shows what can happen when this word is taken seriously. In 1792, a young shoemaker, William Carey, preached from this very passage and ended with the now-famous challenge: “Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.” From that moment the modern missionary movement was launched. What began small grew to impact nations. God still calls His people to move from limitation into expansion.1. It's Time To SingIsaiah 54:1 “Sing, barren woman… burst into song…”The command to sing was given to the barren, the fruitless, the disappointed and the hurting. Before they saw change, before fruit appeared, they were told to rejoice.Captivity had stolen their song. God was restoring it.Singing represents a mindset shift—from despair to faith, from victim to victor. Revival always carries a sound of praise because it reflects confidence that the Redeemer lives.Isaiah 54 continues with promises of: Growth, Dignity, Restoration, Everlasting love, Prosperity, Family blessing, ProtectionThe season of barrenness does not define the future. The first step into new growth is choosing praise before the breakthrough appears.2. It's Time To Stretch Isaiah 54:2–3“Enlarge the place of your tent… do not hold back… For you will spread out to the right and to the left.”The exiles had developed a survival mentality. When people face hardship, the instinct is often to withdraw, conserve, and protect what remains. But God commands the opposite: Do not hold back. The imagery is of a Bedouin tent being expanded—new skins added, cords lengthened, territory extended. Growth requires stretching beyond comfort. This is the mission of the Church:Acts 1:8 – “You will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth.”Matthew 28:19 – “Go and make disciples of all nations.”Growth means moving outward—into communities, workplaces, campuses and neighbourhoods. It means sharing the gospel intentionally and believing for multiplication.Stretching requires faith. It requires stepping up to lead, to serve, to speak, to invite. Fear shrinks back; faith expands forward.3. It's Time To StrengthenIsaiah 54:2 “…strengthen your stakes.”Expansion without strengthening leads to collapse. As growth increases, foundations must deepen.• Strengthen Yourself In The WordPsalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet.”2 Timothy 3:16–17 – “All Scripture is God-breathed… so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped.”The Word equips, corrects, trains and guides. Growth demands daily discipline in Scripture. Strong tents require strong stakes.• Strengthen Yourself In The Holy SpiritJohn 3:34 – “God gives the Spirit without limit.”Acts 1:8 – “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…”Jesus was “full of the Holy Spirit” (Luke 4:1). Effective witness flows from spiritual empowerment. Stretching cannot happen in human strength. Dependence on the Holy Spirit must deepen daily.• Strengthen Yourself OrganisationallyGrowth also requires order. Time, habits, finances, priorities and family life must align with purpose. Capacity must increase to sustain expansion.Organisation creates room for multiplication. In ConclusionGod is preparing His people for new levels of growth. The word is clear:Sing – shift the mindset from barrenness to fruitfulness.Stretch – refuse to hold back; expand in faith.Strengthen – deepen foundations in the Word, the Spirit and disciplined living.Isaiah 54:4 declares:“Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame.”This is not a season of retreat, but of advance. Not survival, but multiplication. Not limitation, but expansion.Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.

When Bella Freud—great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud—sat down with Esther Perel on Fashion Neurosis, I knew I had to listen. What unfolds is not a conversation about trends or aesthetics, but about identity, masculinity, desire, and the psychology of being seen.In this solo reflection, I explore clothing as a kind of “second skin”—a psychological boundary between self and world. Drawing from Perel's thinking on Eros in Mating in Captivity, Valerie Steele's idea of fashion as skin ego, and even a touch of Jack Morin's erotic equation, I reflect on why what we wear is never neutral.I share a story from my therapy room about helping an autistic client build confidence through intentional style, what it's like to shop for clothes with my 16-year-old son, and why paying attention to how people craft themselves might be one of the most countercultural practices available to us right now.Fashion isn't superficial. It's relational. It's embodied. And in a world where we rarely look up from our screens, noticing what someone is wearing might be one small way of saying: I see you.

In his talk “Bring Every Thought Into Captivity,” Eric Tadros explores how thoughts influence our behavior and spiritual life, highlighting common cognitive distortions such as mind reading, catastrophizing, emotional reasoning, labeling, and overgeneralization. He explains how these distorted thoughts contribute to fear, anxiety, and sin, using biblical examples like the woman with the flow of blood and Elijah's despair to illustrate their impact. Eric emphasizes the importance of recognizing and challenging negative thought patterns to prevent them from controlling our lives. Drawing from scripture, he connects the spiritual battle to controlling thoughts and aligning them with Christ's obedience. He also discusses how emotions can mislead us and stresses the value of cultivating a disciplined spiritual life beyond feelings. Through practical advice and scriptural reflections, Eric calls listeners to bring every thought into captivity to foster mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. As we continue our series on temptation, we look at the fourth stage, today. A logismoi (Greek) is an obtrusive, invading thought that assaults our mind, that setups a temptation. There is a progressive nature to temptation in that it leads to sin and, eventually, to death. Today, on the podcast, we look at stage 4 — captivity. The captivity stage is where we keep falling over and over to the same temptation. It’s a trap that we can’t seem to get out of. We may still battle, but we lose more than we win. We might even have stretches of victory or success in staving off the temptation and we might think we are safe or okay, but then it comes back in a voracious manner. Community is key to dealing with the captivity stage and we get into that in the podcast today. From the Touchline is a short-feature podcast with Rev Brad Kenney, Founder and Executive Director of Soccer Chaplains United and Volunteer Chaplain to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Rev Brad and occasional guests touch on various issues around the topics of faith, family, and football (soccer). Welcome to Day 2777 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2777 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 106:34-48 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2777 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day two thousand seven hundred seventy-seven of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The title for today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Horror of Accommodation – When the Salt Loses Its Savor. Today, we reach the solemn conclusion of our journey through Psalm One Hundred Six. We are trekking through the final section, verses thirty-four through forty-eight, in the New Living Translation. This marks not only the end of this specific psalm but also the conclusion of Book Four of the Psalter. In our previous trek, we walked through the "Cycle of Amnesia" in the wilderness. We watched a generation that had been liberated by the mighty hand of God crumble into grumbling, envy, and idolatry. We saw them trade their glorious God for a grass-eating bull at Sinai. We saw them yoke themselves to the dead spirits at Baal-Peor. It was a tragic catalog of missed opportunities and hardened hearts. But as we turn to verse thirty-four, the scene shifts. The wilderness wanderings are over. Joshua has led the people across the Jordan. The walls of Jericho have fallen. The people are now living in the Promised Land—the "pleasant land" they once despised. You might think, "Finally! They made it! Now they will surely be faithful." Tragically, the change of geography did not create a change of heart. In this final section, we witness the slow, agonizing slide from Conquest to Compromise, and finally to Captivity. We will see what happens when the people of God stop fighting the culture and start becoming the culture. We will encounter the darkest verse in Israel's history—the sacrifice of children to demons—and we will see how the land itself vomited them out. But, true to the character of Yahweh, we will also see that even in the darkest pit of exile, the ladder of Covenant Love still reaches down. So, let us brace ourselves for the hard truth of history, and the healing balm of God's mercy. The first segment is: The Failure of Assimilation: Mingling with the Darkness. Psalm One Hundred Six: verses thirty-four through thirty-nine. Israel failed to destroy the nations in the land, as the Lord had commanded them.  Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs.  They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.  They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons.  They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder.  They defiled themselves by their evil deeds, and their love of idols was...

By tracing common stages within Torahism (aka Hebrew Roots Movement, Torah-keeping, Torah-observant Christianity) we examine why this trajectory can lead to confusion, division, and a displacement of the gospel. Welcome to Be Bold for Jesus! Our mission is to help you walk boldly in your faith and follow Jesus with confidence. Led by Lee and Jaclyn Arnold, we teach the Bible in a way that transforms the heart, sharpens discernment, and equips believers to live out God's truth in a confused and compromised world. In today's message:“Prophecy of the Captivity: How to Spot a False Prophet”(Jeremiah 25:1–38)In Jeremiah 25, God speaks through His faithful prophet while false voices promise peace, comfort, and prosperity without repentance. This message exposes the danger of ignoring God's Word, the certainty of His warnings, and how to recognize voices that speak from man rather than from God.Through Judah's refusal to listen—and God's use of Babylon as His instrument of discipline—we learn that false prophets minimize sin, reject correction, and promise outcomes God never guaranteed. True prophecy, on the other hand, calls people to repentance, surrender, and trust in the Lord—even when the message is hard to hear. This message reveals key truths:False prophets speak what people want to hear, not what God has saidGod's patience does not cancel His judgmentDiscipline is often God's mercy in actionGod may use unexpected instruments to accomplish His purposesIgnoring God's warnings eventually affects every area of lifeJudgment is never God's final word—restoration follows repentanceThe reminder for us today:God always warns before He disciplines. He speaks through His Word, His servants, and His Spirit—calling us to listen, respond, and return before consequences escalate.“Because you have not listened to My words… I will summon all the peoples of the north.” — Jeremiah 25:8–9“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” — Hebrews 3:15Jeremiah 25 challenges us to examine the voices we trust, the warnings we dismiss, and the repentance we postpone. This is not merely a message about ancient Israel—it is a call for discernment in our own time.If God is speaking to your heart today—about a habit, a relationship, a compromise, or a direction—respond now. Don't wait until mercy becomes discipline. Jesus has already taken the cup of wrath so we can receive grace, forgiveness, and new life.Stay connected and grow with us:• Sunday Sermons – Live on Zoom & Facebook• Wednesday Bible Study – Interactive, in-depth discussions• Daily Dose of Boldness – Devotionals to strengthen your walkBe Bold for Jesus Conference 2026An unforgettable weekend to ignite your faith and equip you to live boldly for Christ.

This episode explores the theme of "being the head and not the tail," drawing from Deuteronomy 28 to encourage listeners to shift from a mindset of bondage and subservience to one of leadership and obedience to God. Samuel emphasizes that blessings follow faithful submission and obedience, contrasting the generational effects of living in freedom versus captivity. Practical examples illustrate how spiritual and financial freedom can be cultivated over time, impacting future generations. The episode closes with a call to embrace obedience, patience, and a lifestyle distinct from worldly patterns, trusting that God equips and blesses those who follow His ways.

After Russian-Israeli academic Elizabeth Tsurkov was freed from captivity in Iraq in September following two and a half years of imprisonment and torture, she returned to a very different Israel, she said in a wide-ranging interview on the Haaretz Podcast. Israelis “have changed in very fundamental ways,” she said. “After October 7, the circle of people towards whom Israelis feel compassion shrunk very significantly.” As she returns to public life as a researcher and commentator on Middle East affairs, while undergoing physical rehabilitation from injuries she suffered as the prisoner of Kata’ib Hezbollah, she has already been attacked by the Israeli right for social media posts in support of human rights and critical of Israel’s policies in Gaza. Despite being held in captivity, she said, her political views “have not substantially changed: I still see Arabs as human beings, which is an unpopular opinion, it seems.” In her conversation with host Allison Kaplan Sommer, Tsurkov discusses the politics of Iraq – the country where she was kidnapped and held – following their recent elections, calling it a “failed oil state” driven by the behavior of Iranian-backed militias with “no clear path for reform and change.” She also analyzes the impact of the new regime in Syria, praising the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump towards the year-old government. She also credits the president with her release. “Trump is the reason I'm free. This is not an interpretation, this is a fact. I know exactly how I came to be released: It was because of threats that were made on his behalf.” Read more: Right-wing Pundit Amit Segal: Tsurkov 'Should Do Some Soul-searching About the Price Her Stupid Adventures Cost Israel' 'Strung Up and Tortured': Elizabeth Tsurkov Recounts Over Two Years of Captivity in Iraq 'Things Weren't Easy': After Iraq Captivity, Elizabeth Tsurkov Tells Netanyahu She Was Tortured What Is Kata'ib Hezbollah? The most shocking part? She shares the details of her kidnapping, how they mistook her for her cousin, the conversations she overheard between the ten members of the criminal gang, and how she was released without her family paying ransom. She reveals that this organization had kidnapped 26 people total and that some of those arrested were still running operations from prison.Even though most of the victims have identified and pointed them out, the legal process has been stalled for years due to judge changes and jurisdictional issues. Even after her release, they tried to kidnap her son, forcing her to beg authorities for protection. This is a story about the relentless search for justice, forgiveness without forgetting, and the reality of a justice system that fails victims.
