Topping the political news this week: the Governor delivers a populist State of the State message, with Democrats in the Legislature cheering repeatedly and Republican members sitting on their hands – even to the point of not cheering a proposal to help young children, or throwing shade at Ohio and Indiana. Mark and Jeff analyze the Governor's address, and talk legislative priorities with the first woman to serve as Senate Majority Leader, Grand Rapids Senator Winnie Brinks. Also this week: in what's becoming our weekly Republicans in Trouble segment, Macomb Prosecutor Pete Lucido has done it again – this time quoting the GOAT of insurrectionists, Gen. Robert E. Lee, and being targeted in another lawsuit alleging official misconduct. And there's a lot happening in both the state and national Republican Party leadership that pits the ultra-MAGAs against less extreme MAGAs. Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks has the historic distinction of being the first woman to ever hold this position in the Michigan Senate, as well as being the first woman to represent Grand Rapids in the Michigan Senate in more than 100 years. Her legislative focus has been on clean drinking water in Michigan and has worked tirelessly on efforts to reduce the prevalence of toxic PFAS chemicals in it. Her other policy passions have included improving equity in maternal health care, reproductive rights, reducing prescription drug costs, and helping uplift local communities and organizations. Before being elected to the state House (where she served two terms) Brinks was a caseworker at The Source, helping businesses and nonprofits improve workplaces and retain employees. She also worked as the director of a community-based corrections agency and as a school paraprofessional. We then cover some key political developments that occurred over the weekend and play some disturbing John Fetterman audio. We have three candidates for you on today's podcast. Leora Levy, Republican nominee for Senate in Connecticut, is up first. She's a long shot to defeat Sen. Dick Blumenthal, but the polls are way too close for comfort for Democrats. Tom Barrett, Republican nominee for Congress in Michigan's 7th district is running neck-and-neck with Democrat star Elissa Slotkin. And then, Wesley Hunt, Republican nominee in the new 38th Congressional district in Texas is running way ahead in his race. They're all strong candidates, but don't take our word for it, let's hear what they have to say!

It's down to the last days and hours until Election Day. With more than 1.1-million votes already cast, the turnout likely will come close to the record mid-term election of 2018. The outcome is definitely in doubt: will the polls showing close-but-comfortable leads for the top of the Democratic ticket mean Michigan Democrats successful overcome the historic headwinds of a mid-term, or will the election deniers leading the state's GOP ticket pull off historic upsets? Add to it continuing false claims of election fraud in 2020 and it's likely that next Tuesday will only be a waypoint in the 2022 election story as any (if not most) losing GOP candidates reflexively shout "rigged election" and "vote fraud". In the podcast, we mention one story that can help combat the claims of vote fraud: Bridge Michigan's Jonathan Oosting does a deep dive into the many levels of security built into the state's absentee voting process. On Mondy's Mark Levin Show, Democrats have spread their big lies and conspiracy theories since the attack on Paul Pelosi, which have turned out to be false. The same way they lie about Republicans cutting social security. It's false just like the stories about the mentally ill man, David DePape, being a MAGA Republican when he's spent most of his life as a leftwing activist. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins held a press conference to detail the charges which include attempted murder, and kidnapping, and commented that she believes the attack was politically motivated, but interestingly gave no details on who the other targets on the attacker's hit list were. Will the media take any accountability for how they stoke the flames of divisive rhetoric and make it look like it's the fault of the Republicans? Later, NY State Assemblyman Michael Lawler joins the show to discuss his campaign against the head of the Democrat's Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Lawler says that the district doesn't even know his opponent. Lawler added that crime, inflation, and domestic energy production are the top issues facing the country and he supports making America safer and more energy independent both locally and nationally. Afterward, MI State Senator Tom Barrett calls in to discuss his race against Rep. Slotkin who was endorsed by Rep. Liz Cheney. Barrett says that the Democrats have already spent 30 million dollars against him in Michigan's 7th District.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

As we speculated in last week's podcast, Donald Trump spent most of his two-hour diatribe in Macomb County talking about … Donald Trump, dedicating about 5% of his speech to actually supporting the BIg Lie believers leading the GOP state ticket. Also in the political headlines this week: longtime Republican powerbroker Bob LaBrant calls this year's GOP ticket “the most unqualified state-level ticket in recent Michigan history” as he actively supports the entire Democratic statewide slate; the state Legislature takes a small step towards a less chaotic election with bipartisan support for making the counting of Absentee Ballots more timely; and the rhetoric is becoming more heated from opponents of the the Voting Rights and Reproductive Freedom ballot proposals. Early voting has begun and the battleground races in Michigan have the attention of the nation. Four of Michigan's 13 congressional districts are considered tossups. We'll talk with one of the candidates in that spotlight: mid-Michigan two-term Representative Elissa Slotkin. Representative Slotkin defied the political odds in 2018, ousting Republican Congressman Mike Bishop even as Donald Trump was winning in her congressional district. She was reelected in 2020, again in a district carried by Trump, downing challenge Paul Junge. Slotkin was raised on the family farm in Holly. She has been in public service since graduating with a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University. After graduate school she was recruited into the Central Intelligence Agency. Fluent in Arabic and Swahili, she served three tours in Iraq as a CIA analyst. During the George W. Bush administration, she worked on the Iraq portfolio for the National Security Council. During Barack Obama's presidency, she worked for the State Department and the Department of Defense. Slotkin was acting assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs from 2015 to 2017. In Congress she is recognized as an expert on national security issues, and also for her ability to work across party lines as a member of the bipartisan Problem-Solvers Caucus. ________________________________________________ This week's podcast is underwritten by Practical Political Consulting and EPIC-MRA. Today we've got two lost sci-fi short stories for you. On the surface they would appear to be dissimilar. But they do have a few things in common. Both stories were written by men, if you can believe the names used when the stories were published in 1954. The use of pseudonyms was very common in science fiction magazines during the 40's, 50's and 60's. We know nothing about these two men and neither produced many stories that appear in the publications of the time, or since for that matter. Our first story is one of my personal favorites for what you may consider an odd reason. When narrating an audiobook the writing style of some authors just, for lack of a better word, works. It flows off the tongue and it's easy narrate. If I could find more stories by Richard Magruder I would narrate them. But this is the only one I could find. Our main character is an inventor, Nathanial Evergood was an eccentric old man with a photographic passion for pretty girls. So he invented a camera lens for special effects. Firing Line with Margaret Hoover

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-MI, the only Democrat in Congress from a district that voted Republican in the last three presidential elections, discusses division in America, which she says is the country's greatest national security threat. A former CIA analyst who served in Iraq, Slotkin describes how her training kicked in during the January 6 Capitol riots and shares her concerns about how prepared the U.S. is to handle future terrorist threats in Afghanistan. Slotkin says don't “let the perfect be the enemy of the good” when it comes to passing legislation, a pragmatic approach that sometimes puts her at odds with the progressives in her caucus. She supports the bipartisan infrastructure deal and is urging a more tailored approach with voting rights to speed up the legislative process. The major cities include (most of) Lansing, East Lansing, Brighton, Howell, Clarkston, Lake Orion, Rochester, and Rochester Hills. That would include then, of course, Michigan State University.  Representative Slotkin describes how September 11 led to her “unusual” and apolitical path to Congress as part of our country's national security team. She quips that she met her husband in Iraq “where every good girl meets her husband – in Saddam Hussein's palace.”  She explains how ultimately she was motivated to run for Congress in May of 2017, “the first time the House of Representatives voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. What I really care about is protections for people with preexisting conditions.” She talks about what has surprised her about being in Congress and how there are really only 50 or 60 truly independent swing districts in the entire country and how that reduces interest in bipartisan cooperation. Slotkin says her priorities “are the things I get pulled over in the grocery store about: the price of healthcare, the price of prescription drugs, clean water, and then bringing some sense of civility and decency back to government.” And she describes how Covid-19 has impacted these priorities. She says her “new obsession” has her focused on America's supply chain and bringing some of our manufacturing base back to the United States, especially on medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. On the challenges facing Michigan State University and all of higher education, Rep. Slotkin says colleges and universities are struggling with the drop in revenue brought on by Covid-19. And she expresses her concern about the “massive” problem of student debt. “I'm a big believer that getting a student loan is not like getting a loan to build a new deck on your house. It's an investment in your future. All loans should be capped at 2.5 percent.” Slotkin says she wants to continue to work to bring down the cost of prescription drugs. “And we need to treat our environmental security like homeland security. We have an opportunity in Michigan to reframe how we talk about environmental issues. It's not a niche issue that only one party cares about. It's about preservation of our way of life and the safety and security of our kids. If you can't feed your child a glass of water without knowing if they're going to get sick, that is a threat to your family. And if you can't fish the rivers your grandfather taught you to fish in, that is a threat to your way of life. “In an independently minded district (like Michigan's 8th) where everyone has very different views on things, I hope to be a representative that hears everyone, reaches out to everyone, and tries to hear all sides and makes independently minded decisions about pieces of legislation. “I hope this district wants a representative that tries to lead based on integrity and duty to the Constitution. That doesn't mean everyone will agree with everything I ever do. But I hope they know that I'm doing this from a place of principle.” Rep. Slotkin adds that she thinks “our young people are doing a good job of showing that they're ready to lead. In terms of preparing yourself for elected office or to lead in general, you can't study it in a book. You have to put yourself out there, take a little risk, and run for something now. You have to take initiative and experience what it is to lead in order to sharpen those skills.  “I still believe that in the United States, fortune favors the bold. If you're willing to try something and do something that others are reticent to do. If you put your blood, sweat, and tears into it, you're still going to succeed here more than anywhere else on the planet. But you have to put yourself out there. You can't just comment from the sidelines. You have to be the man or the woman in the arena, as the phrase goes. That starts wherever you are in high school or college. You have to run for something. You have to lead now in order to learn how to do it really well.” MSU Today airs Sunday mornings at 9:00 on 105.1 FM, AM 870, and your smart speaker and connected devices.

Why did creative writers in early modern England write so forcefully about the relationship between aesthetics and morality? How did they imagine creative work to reflect religious categories and moral expectations? In his new book, Sinister Aesthetics: The Appeal of Evil in Early Modern Literature (Palgrave, 2017), Joel Elliot Slotkin, a professor of English at Towson University, explores how Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare and Milton considered the appeal of evil, and why their writing moralized about aesthetics only to create characters or contexts in which that moral purpose seemed to be undermined. In this ground-breaking study, Slotkin explains how these writers created a “sinister aesthetics,” in which to test their readers, and to persuade their readers that the fall of humanity into sin had aesthetic as well as moral and noetic consequences. Crawford Gribben is a professor of history at Queen's University Belfast. His research interests focus on the history of puritanism and evangelicalism, and he is the author most recently of John Owen and English Puritanism (Oxford University Press, 2016).
