Michigan's Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin's push to show the coolness of centrism to younger and independent voters isn't going as smoothly as she and her people are pushing.  LOL's Pat Johnston devotes a little more time than usual in this "Friday Short" to describe how Slotkin's failing in these chaotic and scary times which call for stark moral clarity.  Slotkin is using critical words against Israel's actions in Gaza, but refuses to show-up to vote on a resolution blocking offensive weapons to Israel. Nor will she declare Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide. The lack of moral clarity as fascism takes over in the United States isn't leadership.  It's cowardice.  NOTES: To view the entire "Breaking Points" interview featuring Michigan Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFrEJTFbSTc&t=962s "32% in U.S. Back Israel's Military Action in Gaza, a New Low." At the same time, MAGA Republicans in Congress are providing major subsidies for the coal & oil industry. Zelenskyy is practically begging for a do-over after his White House meeting fell flat. Meanwhile, Dems sat frozen while Trump honored a 13-year-old cancer survivor with a Secret Service badge—because clapping for a kid is apparently too much. The usual suspects—CNN, MSNBC, and Rachel Maddow—freaked out, while voters in focus groups gave Trump a standing ovation. Even CNN's own polling backed it up. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- While speaking with Politico, Camila Thorndike—Harris Campaign's Climate Engagement Director—revealed that Kamala Harris does not support the expansion of land leases for fracking, and the subsequent expansion of domestic energy production. Earlier in the campaign, Harris had emphasized the expansion of fracking leases via the Inflation Reduction Act, alluding to the idea that it would be a policy she supported moving forward. Notably, while running for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 2019, Harris had called for an outright ban on fracking. Thorndike's revelation now marks the third alteration of Harris's position on fracking. Can Pennsylvanians believe anything she is saying on this subject? 3:25pm- While speaking at a Latino Roundtable in Miami, Florida, Donald Trump couldn't believe that his political rival Kamala Harris was taking the day off from the campaign trail despite the presidential election being just two-weeks away. He hilariously stated: “I can't get over it…She's lazy as hell.” 3:40pm- Democrats in Swing States Are Now Running Away From Harris. In a new report from Alexander Bolton of The Hill writes: “Democrats running for the Senate in ‘blue wall' states that will be critical to determining the outcome of the 2024 election are running away from Vice President Harris, signaling that they are hoping to win over some of former President Trump's voters to keep their seats. And Democratic candidates in those states have been careful about criticizing Trump during the high-stakes debates. They have focused on policy and their own records without taking many—or any—shots against the Republican nominee.” Bolton notes that Democrats Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Senate Candidate Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) are distancing themselves from Harris. He writes that Slotkin “has sounded like a Republican at times, talking about her home on a ‘dirt road' where no electric vehicle would dare go. She has flashed Trumpian rhetoric about how Japan and South Korea ‘ate our lunch' in the 1980s by being a step ahead of U.S. automakers in promoting fuel-efficient vehicles.” You can read the full article here: https://thehill.com/homenews/4945815-democratic-candidates-avoid-harris-blue-wall/ 3:55pm- Rich reads hate mail from listeners—and Matt wonders why he was attacked too! Today, they discuss Kamala Harris confirming she and Joe Biden had no major policy differences, Harris getting some tough questions frfrom "60 Minutes", and Republicans gaining ground in three critical Midwest Senate races. Oh, and of course Jim has a couple of thoughts about the New York Jets firing their head coach.First, they react to Kamala Harris telling the ladies on "The View" that "there's not a thing that comes to mind" when asked whether there was anything she would have done differently than President Biden. She also says she was a part of every major decision Biden made. Jim says this completely ties her to Biden's unpopular record and he is stunned she didn't come up with a single difference.Next, they applaud Bill Whitaker of "60 Minutes" for asking Kamala Harris tough questions and good follow-up questions, especially on the Biden administration's handling of the border crisis. Jim and Greg also critique Harris's word salad responses, as she tried to deflect blame onto Republicans while struggling to defend the administration's failures on immigration. Finally, Jim and Greg discuss the momentum shift in three key Senate races. With only four weeks left in the campaign, Republicans are gaining ground in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan. Wisconsin is now considered a toss-up, Ohio polling shows a dead heat, and Michigan is within the margin of error, signaling that the GOP could make critical gains in these battleground states. Please visit our great sponsors:BetterHelphttps://betterhelp.com/3MLVisit the 3ML website for 10% of your first month.  Zbioticshttps://zbiotics.com/3MLUse code 3ML at checkout to save 15% off your first order.

Richard Slotkin has written some of the more important books explaining the way Americans have created myths to justify slavery, repression, and empire, including "Regeneration Through Violence," "The Fatal Environment," and "Gunfighter Nation." His new book, "A Great Disorder," summarizes his previous ideas and take us to the present, with significant analyses of American from Reagan to the present, with ideas about the way Reagan and Bush in particular brought back the idea of the frontier and the cowboy to exploit and protect it. In our latest episode, we discussed with him the Obama years, his failure to tell a compelling story, and the culture wars and intensification of gun culture in response. And we spend a lot of time discussing Trump's use of old myths about violence and white supremacy to create a Confederate restoration project. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Slotkin, cultural critic and historian, professor of English and American Studies at Wesleyan University, to discuss his recent book A Great Disorder: National Myth and the Battle for America.  First, they run through updates on day one of the DNC, Harris' candidacy, Donald Trump's ongoing meltdown, Iran-Israel conflict, anti-trust, labor action, SCOTUS' stance on trans rights, COVID infection rates, and pro-Palestine protest, before diving into the role Palestinian and pro-Palestinian perspectives will play at the DNC. Professor Richard Slotkin then joins, diving right into the concept of the “national myth” as the use of history and narratives of the past to rationalize the present and its ongoing crises. Expanding on this, Professor Slotkin walks through the role of social and economic insecurity in spurring the need to make sense of a moment, before stepping back to touch on how malleable these mythologies can be, with the same stories often taking on multiple perspectives that can be used and presented differently to affirm various, frequently conflicting, contemporary ideologies, parsing through the various myths of the American Revolution, Civil War, and the “Good War: (WWII), and how they have been employed throughout history. After expanding on the utility of these mythologies, particularly within the context of the US economic and legal systems, Professor Slotkin brings Sam and Emma into the modern era, outlining the grounding mythologies of the MAGA movement in the Lost Cause and the Second Amendment, and how Democrats can (and might be) learning how to use these mythologies to their benefit as Conservatives do. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch JD Vance call out the problem of “Ethnic Enclaves,” unpack profits, price gouging, and inflation, and dive deep into Walz's impressive early performances at Harris' VP pick, and what he can tell us about the potentials for Harris' candidacy.
