We rocked it back to the KTMA era with a listener request for SST: Deathflight and boy are our arms tired. That works, right?Host segments: MiMi has no Farrah-do; if Burgess Meredith doesn't like you; roll a constitution check against Senegal flu; a drinking problem; the old-guy love triangle; so 80s; we cancel ourselves; oh, wooow.

In this episode, I spoke with author Dale Sherman on his book "The Worst We Can Find: MST3K, Rifftrax, And The History of Heckling At The Movies". Had you tuned in to the small television station KTMA on Thanksgiving Day, 1988, you would have been one of the few witnesses to pop culture history being made. On that day, viewers in and around St. Paul, Minnesota, were treated to a genuine oddity, in which a man and his robots, trapped within a defiantly DIY sci-fi set, cracked jokes while watching a terrible movie.
We are starting up the rankings of all the Mystery Science Theater 3000 seasons based on their era so we start off with the antenna channel years that started it all. What are the key Top 10 episodes to see from this section? How many of these films had many already seen widely on cable TV and drive-in theaters? Is it all pretty good despite being a test run Season? And more musings with Corey, Faith & I! Mystery Science Theater 3000 premiered on KTMA (a UHF station in Hopkins Minnesota) at 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1988. The premise was (and still is) fairly simple. An average Joe… or Joel in this case… is shot into space by his evil bosses and forced to watch bad movies as part of an experiment. Joel can't choose where the movie begins or ends. Because he used those parts to make his robot friends Cambot, CPC, Tom Servo and Crow. Servo and Crow aid Joel as they sit through bad movies making snide comments and quips which is now commonly referred to as “movie riffing”. It's a show you either get or you don't get. For those of us who DO get it, it taps into something we all do naturally while watching a bad movie. Making comments on how bad the movie is. And that's why we find it so funny. Because the crew at Mystery Science Theater 3000 has perfected the art of “movie riffing” There must be something in the water in Minnesota that makes them so good at it. The original run of MST3K ended in 1999. Since then the original cast has not been quiet. They've started other movie riffing projects such as the Film Crew, RiffTrax, Cinematic Titanic and The Mads are Back, But most recently MST3K has made a triumphant return with original showrunner Joel Hodgeson. First on Netflix and most recently launching their own streaming platform called The Gizmoplex. Both were funded through record breaking Kickstarter Campaigns. Join Bret and Andrew as they talk about their love for MST3K, their favorite episodes and characters. And if you're wondering how they eat or breathe. Or other scientific facts. Just repeat to yourself it's just a podcast. I really should relax.
Superfan Mike (not Nelson) Ensing and I detail the rising of the first encounter of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on KTMA antenna channel and the early cable days of Comedy Central. What prop comedy traits of Joel's do we see in other comedians nowadays? What pop culture references, mannerisms and observations does he utilize the most? Besides being the father of the bots and as the creator of the show, what else did he bring during his period on there prior to the recent continuation? And more riff-filled roll calls! We're going way, WAY back to the first KTMA episode (courtesy of the Gizmoplex, but also on YouTube) with the marionette-filled Invaders from the Deep. Happy Gamuary! Sorry if we’re a little late to the party—it’s just that the KTMA episode of Gamera vs. Gaos really threw us for a loop. Adam and Chris try to recombobulate themselves by reminiscing about the joys of Christmas past, beautiful film prints, fountains of blood, robot puberty, and second-rate Gamera songs.
In this minisode spin-off series, your wonky but affable host will focus on one film previously riffed on MST3K. I've watched this film in its original form and tried to review it on its own merits, then compare my findings with the “experiment”.Our second adventure? KTMA experiment K.09, “Phase IV”! We'll discuss ants having to be the size of Buicks to be scary, Saul Bass' competencies for dialogue-driven drama, and what it was like to watch a movie with Joel and the 'Bots in 1988. In this epic episode, Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin chat and laugh with four mother runners who chose to celebrate banner birthdays or anniversaries with running races! First up is mom of four Angela Rodriguez, who is fete’ing turning 40 by running her first marathon. Listen as Angela and Sarah bond hard at being rule-followers when it comes to training plans. Next is Malia, who chose to celebrate her 40th by running 40 races in the year following her bday. She shares how the scheme came to her while running a race on her birthday last October, knowing she wanted “more of ‘this’” in her life. Malia talks about the importance of doing races with family members and friends, including a tale of how she ran every step of a half-marathon with a posse of 10 gal-pals. Find out how doughnuts figured prominently in her year of races—and gain great racing advice from Malia. Then comes Kim who, get this, ran 40 marathons by her 40th birthday after only taking up running at age 30. This fitness/strength instructor opens up about how the Boston Marathon bombing profoundly changed her perspective on running. Kim tells the wonderful tale of her 40th ;marathon—and how it was the birthday party this Yankee Doodle Dandy had always longed for. (Complete with Diet Sunkist and Swedish fish.) Last but most definitely not least is Holly, who tells of marking her 25th wedding anniversary by holding a 25K race—and baking 25 pies to share at the finish line! There’s lots of talk of pies (be prepared to drool along with SBS) and some about running. Finally, find out what “KTMA” stands for and where it’s engraved. The show premiered on KTMA in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 24, 1988. It later aired on The Comedy Channel/Comedy Central for another six seasons until its cancellation in 1997. Monday, November 24, 2008. One of my favorite TV shows ever, Mystery Science Theater 3000, made its debut on this day twenty years ago. It first ran on a small independent station, KTMA, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I share a little about the background of the show, as well as how it resonated for me from the moment I first saw it on the Comedy Channel a few years later. If you are curious, a number of the KTMA episodes of MST3K are available on YouTube -- a search on "MST3K KTMA" will turn them up. For more information about MST3K than you could imagine existed, try the official fan site, Satellite News.Enjoy!
