fWotD Episode 2712: Thunderbirds (TV series) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 7 October 2024 is Thunderbirds (TV series).Thunderbirds is a British science fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, filmed by their production company AP Films (APF) and distributed by ITC Entertainment. It was filmed between 1964 and 1966 using a form of electronic marionette puppetry called "Supermarionation" combined with scale model special effects sequences. Two series, totalling 32 fifty-minute episodes, were made; production ended with the sixth episode of the second series after Lew Grade, APF's financial backer, failed in his efforts to sell the programme to US network television.Set in the 2060s, Thunderbirds was a follow-up to the earlier Supermarionation productions Four Feather Falls, Supercar, Fireball XL5 and Stingray. It concerns the exploits of International Rescue: a life-saving organisation with a secret base on an island in the Pacific Ocean. International Rescue operates a fleet of technologically-advanced rescue vehicles, headed by five craft called the Thunderbird machines. The main characters are the leader of International Rescue, ex-astronaut Jeff Tracy, and his five adult sons, who pilot the Thunderbirds.Thunderbirds premiered in September 1965 on the ITV network and has since aired in at least 66 countries. Besides tie-in merchandise, it was followed by two feature films: Thunderbirds Are Go and Thunderbird 6. Periodically repeated, it was adapted for radio in the 1990s and has influenced many TV programmes and other media. Its other adaptations include an anime reimagining (Thunderbirds 2086), a live-action film (Thunderbirds) and a part-CGI, part-live-action remake (Thunderbirds Are Go). Three supplementary episodes, based on tie-in audio plays and made using the same puppet techniques as the original, have also been produced.Widely regarded as the Andersons' most popular and commercially successful series, Thunderbirds has been praised for its special effects, directed by Derek Meddings, and its musical score by Barry Gray. It is also remembered for its title sequence, which begins with an oft-quoted countdown by Jeff Tracy voice actor Peter Dyneley: "5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Thunderbirds Are Go!" A real-life search and rescue service, the International Rescue Corps, was named after the organisation featured in the series. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:57 UTC on Monday, 7 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Thunderbirds (TV series) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Arthur.

After watching some times Star Trek delved into Cosmic Horror, Miles might have told Charlie ‘Oh, this stuff is tame, let's watch Space 1999' instead. So, for this episode, we are now rebranding as #spacescamps as we talk about the greatest collection of space adventuring office workers Moonbase Alpha has to offer in Gerry Anderson's Space 1999. After we briefly gloss over the opening episode ‘Breakaway,' we discuss Brian Blessed being out-hammed by the amazingly named JOHN SHRAPNEL in ‘Death's Other Dominion' (27:36), things get a bit tentacle monster in ‘Dragon's Domain' (40:26), watch some amazing class politics and screams of ‘MUUUUUUUTANT' in ‘Mission of the Darians,' (51:57) and bring it all to a close in ‘End of Eternity' (01:01:09) as we meet a crazed immortal psychopath, which, if you watch the previous episode just come to the conclusion that this happens a lot in Space 1999, it's not Star Trek, but it's a hell of a lot of fun! Launch All Eagles! Stop being weird! Talking Points Include: A FUCKING NUCLEAR EXPLOSION ON THE MOON. Balataro, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the 2016 Ghostbusters film is fun, The Mad Max movies, Date Movies, Miles ruining ‘The Day After Tomorrow' for the person in front of him (EDITOR NOTE: While Ian Holm is the British actor in question, he doesn't deliver the final toast to Manchester United in the scene, that's actually Richard McMillan) What is Space 1999? Supermarionation, Gerry Anderson, The Elevator Pitch, the Earth is fucked, Christopher Lee in an episode we did not watch, Space 1999's budget is akin to bullying 1970s Doctor Who for it's lunch money, the cast of Space 1999 are not qualified space heroes, Koenig is far more Office Boss than Space Cowboy, it's nice to have our characters called Nick and Paul and Adamn, but it does make it hard to distinguish, Charlie's notes are sometimes as complex as ‘man wearing neck-tie… evil?', Peter Wyngarde, BRIAN BLESSED, JOHN SHRAPNEL, Grant Morrison comics we wouldn't reread, asbestos everywhere, Brian's fate in this episode, Michael Sheard (Who actually plays Ozzel in Empire Strikes Back) some good horror beats that devolve straight into Garth Marenghi's Darkplace-esque shenanigans, they'll never meet anyone nice, Charlie has started watching ‘Sapphire and Steel,' ‘it's a metaphor for capitalism,' Barbaria Bain's leg envy re: Joan Collins, Koenig's ever continual frustration at the inability of people to simply be normal in space, more on Dave, Charlie's former (and sketchy) employer, Immortal Hellraiser BS, Victory through OSHA violations, Long Recapping of DC' Comics Legion Lost, is this the first time Miles has done his Werner Herzog impression? Charlie mentions the roleplaying game ‘Mothership' about ten times throughout the episode, did Charlie like it? Would Star Trek Phase II have been like this? UFO, Miles recorded the second part of the Breakfast in the Ruins episode of ‘The Coming of the Terraphiles' and GUESS WHAT It's going to be a Three Parter!
AMERICA! F**K YEAH! That's right! Team America! The RSA gang wraps up their Trey Parker and Matt Stone feature films. They wrap it up with the most American of all films, not to mention the only film in cinematic history to be made with puppetry! A satire of action film archetypes, American militarism, and the global implications of the politics of the United States, the film follows the titular paramilitary police force, who recruit a Broadway actor to assist in saving the world from Kim Jong Il and his conspiracy of Islamic terrorists and liberal Hollywood actors. Team America: World Police intertwines puppetry and miniature effects in a manner similar to Supermarionation, known for its use in the television series Thunderbirds, although Stone and Parker were not fans of that show. The duo worked on the script with former South Park writer Brady for nearly two years. The film had a troubled production, with various technical problems regarding the puppets and the scheduling extremes of finishing in time for its theatrical release. It also came into routine conflict with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which returned the film multiple times with an NC-17 rating due to an explicit sex scene involving puppets. Team America: World Police premiered at the Denver Film Festival on October 14, 2004, and was theatrically released in the United States the following day. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a modest success at the box office, grossing over $51 million worldwide on a $32 million budget.

Hello there, and welcome to A Brit talks Vintage TV, with me Jamie Dyer. 2021 marked the 85th anniversary of the birth of the man known as 'The Big O' and I can't get enough of him. Last year, my family and I spent a week in a static caravan. This was due to electrical works that were to take place at our property. While wondering what to do with ourselves, we turned on a documentary about the late, great Roy Orbison., I reviewed a new vinyl collection of Sun Records-era Orbison, collated by Bear Family Records. Little did I know that this review would set me up for a viewing of a famous Roy Orbison concert entitled Black And White Night. To say it was strange to see a performance recorded in the 1980s in old-fashioned monochrome is an understatement. However, it suited the intended mood perfectly. I am not sure that, when the pioneers of television were first laying down their television pictures in glorious 405-line, they would have considered it a stylistic choice when colour had long been the standard. Although, saying that, they may have appreciated it has its merits when compared to colour. In a similar train of thought, I wonder what they would have thought of colourisation; The process of taking something originally made in black and white and...well you know the rest. The concept of colourising black and white media has always been something that divides fans. However, it has come a long way since the likes of Ted Turner began colouring in old movies to show on TV. Utilizing computer software and a bit of manual quality control can produce pretty decent results. We saw it a few years back when CBS showed colourised episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy. While Black and White grounded them in the past, colour made them seem new again. The same can be said for the work on Network's latest release, Presented in SuperColorisation. A selection of six episodes from Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation series originally made in black and white, restored and colourised in high definition. The three series featured on the set are: One episode of Four Feather Falls, a western series starring the voices of Nicholas Parsons and Kenneth Connor. Two episodes of Supercar: A visually impressive yet strange series about a flying and swimming supercar, its driver, a professor, a child and a monkey. It's pretty funny too. And three episodes of Fireball XL5: A show my son thought was Supercar, but wasn't. I'm not as familiar with this show, but I do know it has a following. So what about the quality of the colourisation? How is it? To be completely honest with you...it's marvellous. The amount of detail in the work makes Anderson's magnificent stunt execution even more breathtaking. Explosions, water, falling rocks and so much more, are even more impressive. Narratively the inclusion of colour changes the mood somewhat, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Now do I think everything should be colourised? No. There are just some things that work best in their intended medium. The moody look of monochrome suits the vibe. Colourise it and you change that. People sometimes have an issue with the effect that colourisation has on the product. The Anderson set, for example, has instances where strings and other limitations are much more visible in colour due to the change in contrast to achieve the desired effect. Aside from Four Feather Falls, which I think suits black and white best, the shows have a whole new life ahead of them in colour. Presented in Supercolorisation is available to pre-order from NetworkOnAir.com, and will be released on the 12th of December 2022. Roy Orbison's Black and White Night can be found either on BBC4 or Sky Arts.

The first ever episode of Thunderbirds, the revolutionary British TV show starring puppets, aired on September 30th, 1965. It was instantly a hit in Britain, and elsewhere in the world, but its failure to captivate a US audience led to its untimely demise after just two seasons. The show used a system, coined by its creators as “Supermarionation” which involved pre-recording the voices, which would then be played back during filming. Each marionette's head contained filters which converted the dialogue into pulses, which in turn travelled to solenoids in the puppet's lips. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discuss why each marionette needed three heads; look at how the Mercury Seven – the first batch of Nadi astronauts – were honoured by the show; and reveal which of the three of us still has Thunderbirds merch from when they were a kid. For certain characters, work was done many times over to get the squint of an eye or hairline to match the original puppet as closely as possible. The episodes premiered at the British Film Institute in August 2016 and are now streaming on BritBox in the UK. Ben and Nick Foster have collaborated on the original music for 78 episodes of the animated series, THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO (ITV) for which they have been nominated for BAFTA, Music and Sound and British Academy Awards.Thunderbirds Are Go is a British animated science fiction television programme produced by ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures. It is a remake of the Supermarionation series Thunderbirds created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson that follows the exploits of International Rescue (IR), a life-saving organization equipped with technologically-advanced land, sea, air and space rescue crafts; these are headed by a fleet of five vehicles named the Thunderbirds that are launched from IR's secret island base in the Pacific Ocean. The main characters are the five Tracy brothers, who pilot the Thunderbird machines. Thunderbirds Are Go premiered on 4 April 2015 and is currently in its third series. In this episode of the Annotator, the brothers Foster open up their original score for series 2 of THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO. They discuss their unique treatment of Barry Gray's original theme as a part of their audition for the project. Not only do they reveal how they incorporated some of Barry Gray's original instrumentation and style but also how and when they departed from it. Lastly, the two share how they specifically chose to utilize a large symphonic orchestra for this score with the idea of exposing young children to such music and hopefully introducing the idea of being involved with music in some way.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS03:22 - TV-2105:09 - Thunderbirds March05:54 - Surveyor Located07:45 - Ray Mechas09:52 - The Mechanic11:21 - International Rescue vs The Mechanic14:30 - The Jeff Tracy Fix16:37 - I Am The Mechanic17:51 - Thunderbirds March (Minor Version)OTHER TRACKS18:47 - Lovely Day for a Massive Drone MalfunctionSOUNDTRACKThe soundtrack was released on August 30, 2019 by Silva Screen Records and can be purchased on Amazon.com , iTunes, and streamed Apple Music.
