Everything in Joel Hodgson's life led him to creating Mystery Science Theater 3000, or MST3K. From performing magic as a kid to doing stand up in college, Joel attributes his comedy chops to his Midwest upbringing. Joel explains that every opportunity in his career has been a stepping stone to MST3K, whether he was performing stand up on Late Night with David Letterman or designing toys for Tonka. However, he says it wasn't until a conversation he had with Jerry Seinfeld that the seeds for MST3K were planted. Now, 13 seasons later, MST3K has been named one of Time Magazine's “100 best television shows of all time” and has become a cult classic. In this episode of the Cripescast, he and Charlie dive into Joel's career, bond over their shared experience of growing up in Wisconsin, and discuss the weirdest parts of their families' lineage.  Check out MST3K on Netflix or on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFzph9x-n9FR52BI94Zfgww  Follow the Cripescast on all platforms @cripescast and for Charlie's tour dates, merch, Patreon and more head to cripescast.com.  For continued support of the work by Doctors Without Borders in the Middle East, find more information and donate at doctorswithoutborders.org.

This week on Speakernomics, host Kenneth "Shark" Kinney interviews Mark Levy, a differentiation expert who helps corporations, brands, and thought leaders come up with their "Big Sexy Idea." In this episode, Mark shares:   Differentiation as a Business Strategy: Mark defines differentiation as a business strategy aimed at standing out from the competition in a meaningful and interesting way. Your point of differentiation serves as a "foot in the door," capturing people's attention and making you memorable. It's not the totality of everything you are but a cool and emblematic aspect of your work that you lead with.  Balancing Differentiation and Safety: Speakers often grapple with the balance between being different and being a safe choice for meeting planners. What's considered safe or dangerous depends on the context and the specific audience. To succeed, speakers should focus on their target audience, understanding that not everyone will resonate with their approach.   Engaging the Audience for Memorable Talks: Engage with the audience both before and during talks. Get to know your audience beforehand, referencing their activities or stories during the speech. This personal and conversational style makes the talk an extension of a dinner conversation.   Who is Mark Levy?  Mark Levy is a differentiation expert. He differentiates corporations, brands, thought leaders, political campaigns, TV shows, live shows, products, services, books, and speeches. The ideas his clients and he have created have been discussed and used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

Mark began his company in 2001 and is known for differentiating Simon Sinek. Simon's endorsement: “Mark Levy is the man who helped me find my why. He inspires me.”  Mark has also worked with and spoken to leaders, strategists, and teams in large organizations, including Adobe, Amazon, American Express, Bain, BASF, Google, Harrah's, Harvard Business School, History Channel, Major League Baseball, McKinsey, Neighborly, Popeye's, Proctor & Gamble, Stanford University, and UPS.  He's also worked with leaders and advisors to government bodies, including the White House and the United Nations.  Mark consulted to Joel Hodgson, creator of the beloved cult TV series, “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” which has been named one of the 100 best TV shows of all-time by Time, Rolling Stone, and Entertainment Weekly.  In 2018, Mark was inducted into The Million Dollar Consulting® Mentor Hall of Fame. Back in the early 1980's there was a TV Magazine show on KCRA called "Look Who's Talking". They did a whole show on how comedy and laughing is good for your health. They had several guest, audience, and call-in questions sharing loads of good information on the subject. I was one of the guest, and I brought the "soon to be famous" Joel Hodgson. If that name isn't familiar, he was the creative genius behind "Mystery Science Theater 3000", a huge hit in 1988 when released, and brought back for two seasons on Netflix in 2017. Also interviewed was Dr. Danial Rudd, and Scott Coleman who brought in some talent from "RSVP" a local improv troupe. Mystery Science Theater 3000 or MST3K is back once again. The show was first created by Joel Hodgson, then a stand-up comedian who was ambivalent about the career path laid out in clubs or maybe a sitcom. His premise -- that he and a few robot pals are trapped by mad scientists on a spaceship and forced to watch bad movies – turned the show into a cult classic and helped define a snarky, self-aware sense of humor for pop culture in the ‘90s. I talk with Joel about why he left the initial run of the series, and how he's brought it back on his own streaming service called Gizmoplex. We also explore how his sense of humor has changed, and whether he might have been too harsh on some of the films they lampooned. This episode is sponsored by Mint Mobile and Squarespace. MST3K is back! Originally running from 1988 to 1999, Mystery Science Theater 3000 was revived in 2017 due to a crowdfunding campaign led by the show's creator, Joel Hodgson. The show follows a human test subject who is forced to watch "B" movies by evil scientists alongside a group of captive robots who provide colorful commentary on the films. Hodgson explains, "We have kind of a unique relationship with the audience because it's a unique format, and it behaves differently than most shows. For some people, that's very disorienting, and for what we call the 'right people,' it just totally makes sense." Hodgson goes on to describe what each episode looks like on the page and how they come up with each side-splitting jab: "We use about 10% of what we write. It's more like 7000 riffs that we start with... that kind of gets melted down to about 700 riffs in total. But when we brainstorm... it's wide open, and we're not necessarily looking for great ideas as much as more ideas, and out of those come the good ideas." You can check out season 13 of MST3K on their new exclusive streaming service, The Gizmoplex!   Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes!   Now available on Google Podcasts!

Greetings from the CDB Crew (on The Satellite of Love)! This week, Carrie chose for all of us to read Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Comic by (deep breath) Joel Hodgson, Harold Buchholz, Matt McGinnis, Seth Robinson, Sharyl Volpe, Mary Robinson, Todd Nuack, Wes Dzioba, Mike Manley, Jack Pollock, Mimi Simon, and Michael Heisler, published by Dark Horse comics. Though everyone on the panel might not have fully enjoyed this adaptation, they all definitely agreed on how awesome the Crow-Keeper was and how he needs to be in more things very soon. This was a very interesting episode audibly, as well. Brian and Carrie's dog was in a very needy mood and you can here him whining in the background, here and there, throughout the recording. Also, stick around after the credits for old timey phone and fire alarm shenanigans! DIY Corner this week is a new comic by Jeremy Holt on Tapas and tribute to British Girls comics from the 1960s. Other comics discussed on this issue: What's the Furthest Place from Here? by Matthew Rosenberg, Tyler Boss, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Image); Chicken Devil #1 by Brian Buccellato, Hayden Sherman and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Aftershock); Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur (WebToon); and Puu (பூ ) by Nabi (Tapas). The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2018/04/binary-system-podcast-123-wtnv-126-a-door_ajar-part-3/ This week we're recapping the final (?) episode of Night Vale's "A Door Ajar" story arc. (We're wondering if there's still one more episode in the arc, because we've got a lot of unanswered questions: what's Carlos hiding? What exactly killed the Marine Biologists? The heck is up with the Pancake House?) After that we set up our plan for next week's recording, which is to talk about last season's Doctor Who if (WHEN!) Elizabeth finally watches the Christmas episode, and American Gods since Kathryn's almost finished that too. We'd talk about the latest season of Jessica Jones but Kathryn hasn't watched it yet, partly because she's been watching the Punisher instead, but mostly because Elizabeth isn't recommending Jessica Jones to anyone. She does recommend the Joel Hodgson episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The outro music this week was a clip from Flashdance by Podington Bear. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Podington_Bear/Liquid_Gold_Box_Set_Disc_2/Flashdance Correction: When we said the Joel Hodgson episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee was season one episode 19, we meant the first season available on Netflix, because as we've found out the show already had NINE SEASONS on the digital network Cracked. We haven't seen any of those episodes of course, but we're sure they're good too.

When I first scheduled this interview with author Grady Hendrix, I was expecting him to be much more tongue-in-cheek about the subject of horror in print. He had named his book “Paperbacks from Hell,” and started his history of horror novels with The Little People and its unique creation, Gestopochauns – Nazi leprechauns. Plus, he has so much fun describing the outlandish plots of some of these books. Take, for example, this gem, in which he describes Jeffrey Konvitz's The Sentinel: Young Alison ran away but her father chased her down and tried to strangle her with a crucifix necklace, sending her into a fainting, barfing frenzy that ended only when she kicked him in the nards and renounced the church. The book can seem like Mystery Science Theater for print at times. And just as Joel Hodgson and company adore the movies they riff on, and the idea of movies in general, Hendrix loves his books, no matter how over-the-top or offensive they may be. Hendrix appreciates not only the classics like Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby and Joan Samson's The Auctioneer but also the unbound imagination it took to conjure up demon puppets or write five books about killer crabs. “One of the things I take really, really seriously with this book is a lot of these authors are really legitimately good authors, and some are batshit crazy who wrote batshit crazy books, but they've been forgotten,” he says. “This is what they left behind. They've retired, some have died. This is their legacy, and I feel like in a way, my job is to introduce readers to these sort of forgotten authors and sort of take care of this flame and keep it burning.” Hendrix writes his own novels, as well. He released My Best Friend's Exorcism in July, and frequently publishes short fiction and nonfiction pieces. There is a definite sense of humor in everything Hendrix writes, but he's dedicated to making sure what he puts on the page feels real to the reader. Which is why he braved his fear of the dark by sitting in the basement of his apartment building to know what his characters would feel like in Horrorstor, his novel about a haunted IKEA. “When it's time to pull out the scares in horror, I always feel like the ways people fail the most is they don't dig deep enough,” he says. “You make something scary not by taking it super seriously, you make it scary by really knowing it and conveying that experience.” You can find all of his writing at GradyHendrix.com. After the conversation, stay tuned for “Welcome to the Land of Bad Magic,” a great sludgy, riffy track from Hound's new album, Born Under 76. If you like your guitars loud, low, and fuzzy, Hound is the band for you. Find out more about them on their BandCamp site or the Let's Pretend Records Web site.

It's the most wonderful time of the year and we're going to get right to it. It's Halloween and we have a grab bag of tricks and treats for you so there's no reason to dilly dally. We have three, count 'em, three big guests today. The first is Ken Reid, of the excellent podcast TV GUIDANCE COUNSELOR. Ken Reid I a pop cultural encyclopedia whose knowledge base dwarfs my own, and he's hilarious and a great guy to boot. Also, Joel Hodgson of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame. Joel's here to talk about the original MST3K, the new incarnation with Jonah Ray. Joel and I have been friends for a long long time and we hike back into the comedy museum for a segment or two, I think you'll like it. And lastly, but most certainly NOT leastly, monster maker Rick Baker, who worked on Ed Wood, An American Werewolf In London and countless, countless, countless other films is here. I interviewed Rick at Cinefamily here in Los Angeles after a special screening of Ed Wood, so out conversation is presented in that context, We had just watched Ed Wood, there are some questions from the audience. It was a really great conversation. http://DanaGould.com And FINALLY, PLEASE tune in this November 2nd to IFC's new horror comedy Stan Against Evil. Starring John C McGinley of Scrubs and Janet Varney of You're The Worst, written and created by yours truly. It's scary, It's funny. If you enjoy this podcast, then it's definitely worth a look. Stan Against Evil. Premiering Wednesday, Nov. 2nd at 10 PM on IFC with a two show double shot, and with a special sneak preview of our first episode at 10 PM on Halloween night.
