George M. Cohan was one of those rare Broadway figures who was a composer, lyricist, playwright, performer, director, theater owner, and star actor. He could, quite literally, do it all. In his day, he was famous as the "Yankee Doodle Boy" from his hit song and as the "Man Who Owned Broadway" from his musical of the same name. Cohan's songs and shows captured the spirit of an era when staggering social change gave new urgency to efforts to define Americanism.  Elizabeth Craft's Yankee Doodle Dandy: George M. Each chapter explores a different aspect of his life and career including Cohan's approach to American nationalism, Irish American identity, celebrity, and the entertainment business along with defining what made Cohan's shows unique. Craft finds songs and shows that serve as exemplars for each theme she highlights. The book ends with an examination of the 1942 biopic on Cohan and his enduring legacy. Yankee Doodle Dandy offers not only a fuller understanding of Cohan's shows and career, but also new perspectives on fundamental debates about American identity and the performing arts in the early twentieth-century United States. This is the final episode of a three-part conversation with author Elizabeth T. Craft regarding her recent book, Yankee Doodle Dandy — George M. Cohan and the Broadway Stage, the first book major work about Cohan in fifty years. If you missed the first two episodes in this series, you may want to catch up with those before listening to this one.   In this episode, Elizabeth Craft and I discuss the final decades of Cohan's remarkable career, during which he continued to establish and define the very nature of celebrity, including the significant impact he had on young Oscar Hammerstein II and the next generation of Broadway innovators. Elizabeth also shares with us how, during the 1920s, in a series of hit musicals, Cohan, for the first time, put his Irish American heritage and identity at the center of his work, which was not without controversy. Along the way, she reveals the truth behind Cohen's claim that he was born on the 4th of July, provides us with an inside view of the making of the classic 1941 Cohan bio-musical, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and sums up his enduring legacy as the primary inventor of the myth of Broadway.   Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! My guest today is author Elizabeth T. Craft, whose terrific new book, Yankee Doodle Dandy — George M. Cohan and the Broadway Stage, is the first book about Cohan in fifty years. No one looms larger in the history of early Broadway than the Irish American writer, composer, lyricist, director, choreographer, producer, actor, singer, dancer, and musical theater legend George M. Cohan — who is often called “the father of musical comedy.” It is no mistake that Cohan's is the one and only statue of a Broadway figure to have a place of honor in the center of Times Square.   As you will hear, Elizabeth Craft situates Cohan as a central figure in the invention of the Broadway musical and illustrates how his plays, musicals, songs, and persona indelibly shaped the American cultural landscape of his day and more than 100 years later continue to have enduring resonance. Featured on this episode is music from The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra's outstanding album You're A Grand Old Rag — The Music of George M. Cohan, and the studio cast recording of Yankee Doodle Dandy (book by David Armstrong, music & lyrics by George M. Cohan, musical arrangements and additional music and lyrics by Albert Evans.) Yes, it's time once again for an episode that's only banter. We know you guys have been pining for it, especially after some of the stinkers we've been giving you lately, so Sonny and Tom are here to deliver nothing but fresh banter for you all to enjoy. On the docket today are the last words of Kirk Douglas, Kevin Costner bankrolling a 3+ part western epic and ruining his marriage in the process, a status update on the production of Alec Baldwin's Rust, a look into the ominous past of the guy who self-immolated outside the Trump hush money trial, and a discussion on the upcoming Tom Hanks and Robin Wright reunion film "Here," which takes place entirely in one room. Tell me those aren't some captivating topics? And if that wasn't enough, the boys still whip up an opening segment for you, as they imagine what it would be like if Arnold Schwarzenegger took over James Cagney's role in 1942's "Yankee Doodle Dandy," a film that surprisingly did not end by asking you to buy war bonds. Could Arnold win an Oscar for a role that requires him to sing and dance? The boys figure that if Zac Efron could get away with having his singing voice dubbed in the first "High School Musical" film, Arnold could pull it off too. Hosted by Sonny de Nocker (@swankysonny) and Tom Price (@thomas_price22).Theme by Josh Britt (jbrittmusic.com)Instagram: AnOscarForArnoldTwitter: @AnOscar4ArnoldTikTok: AnOscarForArnoldContact: AnOscarForArnold@gmail.com

In this episode we tell the story of not one, but two, Irish families that came out of the area surrounding the town of Bantry in West Cork, Ireland. The first story shares the story of Francis O'Neill who emigrated to the USA and Chicago - eventually becoming a chief of police. More importantly, he became an avid collector and preserver of traditional Irish music. The healthy state of Irish traditional music today owes a lot to the efforts of this one man.We then follow the Keohane family who left the area in the early 1800s. On arrival in the USA, their name changed to "Cohan" and their grandson is the broadway composer we know today as "George M. Cohan".We also have lots of wonderful Irish songs and music to help us along the way - so do enjoy!Music featured in this episode:"Chief O'Neill's Favourite Hornpipe" performed by Willie Clancy."City of Chicago" performed by Christy Moore."Yankee Doodle Dandy" performed by Jimmy Cagney and Bob Hope.Support the Letter from Ireland Show:Thank you for listening to the Letter from Ireland show. This episode of The American Tapestry Project explores how Americans celebrate freedom through holidays and music. Who was Francis Scott Key and why did he write “The Defence of Fort McHenry” and how did that become “The Star-Spangled Banner”? Which child of immigrants wrote “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “The Washington Post March”? Which other immigrant wrote “God Bless America”? And who was “the Yankee Doodle Dandy” who wrote “It's a Grand Old Flag”? And who was Katharine Lee Bates, the poet Boston.com called “a gay, feminist badass from Massachusetts” who wrote “America the Beautiful”? Like they say on the late night infomercials, ‘all this and more' as we explore American patriotic music and the freedom of which it sings – American freedom holidays on The American Tapestry Project.

Starts, "O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance." Something about /// dead bodies /// and /// no one to bury them /// was giving off super Gothic vibes. Then we hit "avenge the outpoured blood" and I was feeling all the Shirley Jackson. Psalm 80: A Prayer for Restoration. Starts, "Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel." In fact, this famous actor from Hollywood's golden age will be your babysitter. From the spooky car ride up a narrow driveway in Benedict Canyon to the creaky opening of the front door that reveals an elderly James Cagney, you are captivated! The star of The Public Enemy, Yankee Doodle Dandy, White Heat, Mister Roberts, and many other Hollywood classics is nothing like you'd expect. He's not brash; he's not a killer; he isn't loud and he doesn't sing and dance. He is quiet and gentle and full of imagination. In one afternoon away from the pressures of a perfectionist father, you relax and fall under the spell of a wonderful babysitter who makes you feel special and encourages you to enter an imaginary world where leprechauns come to life and owls speak to you from the trees. Hours later, you leave James Cagney's house changed from a timid child into an enthusiastic young man who's infused with self-confidence and ready for life's next adventure. Ryan Cassidy is the youngest of the Cassidy brothers and is often placed into context with brothers David Cassidy (half-brother), Shaun Cassidy and Patrick Cassidy or parents Shirley Jones and the late Jack Cassidy. At first, Ryan was unswayed by the lure of show business and considered a career in law enforcement. Johnny Ray Miller, a native of Canton, Ohio, has been an aficionado of the Partridge Family television program and their recorded music from the show's beginnings. His mother grew up in Hollywood and was an extra in Our Gang comedy shorts and studied acting at Ben Bard Drama. His grandfather was a silent film violinist who went from bit actor to Universal Studios house composer and eventually founded Corelli-Jacobs Recording Inc. A great-uncle doubled Gary Cooper in The Virginian (1929) and fought Jack Dempsey. Yet another grandfather promoted rodeos with cowboy star Hoot Gibson at Gilmore Stadium. Before the advent of classic films on cable, video or streaming, Alan incessantly watched and catalogued movies on television. He is the author of a pair of notable cinema biographies. Charles McGraw: Film Noir Tough Guy is a critically acclaimed saga of the rough-hewn actor's life and times. Michael Curtiz: A Life in Film is the first comprehensive biography of the director of Casablanca, Mildred Pierce, Yankee Doodle Dandy and The Adventures of Robin Hood among other classic films. The Curtiz book has received enthusiastic reviews from the New York Review of Books (David Thomson), the Wall Street Journal (Scott Eyman), the Los Angeles Times (Kenneth Turan) and Leonard Maltin. Alan has been the producer and host of the annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Springs, California since 2008.  Alan is also charter director and treasurer of the Film Noir Foundation. With FNF president Eddie Muller, Alan has spearheaded the preservation and restoration of “lost” films and co-programs and co-hosts several of the annual NOIR CITY film festivals. Alan has produced, written and appeared in documentaries for many classic film releases on Blu ray physical media.

Synopsis Today we celebrate three legendary figures in American popular music. The first is Stephen Foster, the great American songwriter of the 19th century who composed 189 classic songs including “Beautiful Dreamer” and “Old Folks at Home.” Foster was born on this date in 1826 in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania. The second figure we honor today is the incredibly influential 20th century jazz trumpeter, Louis Armstrong, who claimed to have been born on this date in New Orleans in the year 1900. It seems too good to be true that Foster and Armstrong should both have been born on the Fourth of July—in fact, Armstrong's real birthday occurred on August 4, 1901. Apparently, Armstrong wasn't sure of the exact details, so he and his agent decided that it would be good publicity for Armstrong to be born on the Fourth of July and at the start of the new century. The great Vaudeville and Broadway song and dance man, George M. Cohan, also believed he was born on the Fourth of July, in 1878—a public misconception reinforced by the famous 1942 biographical film of Cohan's life, “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” starring James Cagney as George M. The belated discovery of Cohan's birth certificate, however, proved that a Yankee Doodle Dandy he may have been, but one actually born on the THIRD of July. Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein takes us through the July 2022 Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive.  We kick  off the discussion with the release of “Adventures of Don Juan” (1948) starring Errol Flynn and Viveca Lindfors, and directed by Vincent Sherman.   Beautifully restored in Technicolor, this film is another in the long line of swashbuckler roles for Flynn, though with a lighter touch.  Next George details “The Frisco Kid” (1979) starring Gene Wilder as a Polish rabbi who is traveling to San Francisco and Harrison Ford as a bank robber who befriends him along the way. This underrated comedy showcases Wilder in a more serious and sweet role, while fans of Harrison Ford get to see him in a rare western from earlier in his career. And since this is July, George shares his review of the ultimate 4th of July film from the Warner Archive, the 1942 musical "Yankee Doodle Dandy" starring James Cagney and directed by Michael Curtiz.  And we finish with a discussion of some other patriotic films released by the Warner Archive that make for great 4th of July viewing options, including "The Clock", "For Me and My Gal," "Captains of the Clouds" and "The Big Parade."Purchase on Amazon:The Frisco Kid Blu-rayAdventures of Don Juan Blu-rayYankee Doodle Dandy Blu-rayOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers.  Contact us today to see how we can work together to achieve your goals.  www.otakumedia.tv
