J. Elvis Weinstein was a head writer on many shows so he knows a good joke while Jay just jokes often from character. On this show we sort out the differences. Also J. talks about his funny family. Hobbies like ice cream, bad jokes, bubble gum jokes, fortune cookies, losing money on documentaries, saving your marriage by wasting less money than your wife thinks, Mystery Science Theater, old credits, and how jokes ruin dramas, hack jokes, improvisations, the perfect punchline, and hating Seinfeld. Bio: J. Elvis Weinstein began his stand-up comedy career at age 15 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At 17, he was one of the founding writer/performers of "Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K) as the original voice/puppeteer of robots Tom Servo and Gypsy, and the role of Dr. Lawrence Erhardt.Since moving to Los Angeles, he has worked as a writer/producer on a wide range of network TV comedy, including "Freaks and Geeks", "Malcolm and Eddie", "Dead Last", and "My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star.” He was also the Head Writer on "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Later with Greg Kinnear". In 2008 he reunited with his MST3K co-stars to form “Cinematic Titanic” which toured U.S. Theaters as a live show and produced 12 DVDs, now available as a box set.J. Elvis has written and directed 3 films - 2 feature documentaries (“I Need You To Kill” & “Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me To Be?”) and a comedy short (“The Mediocre Samaritan”). As a performer, he continues to perform as a stand-up (releasing the album “Chunks” in 2019), co-hosts the podcast “Thought Spiral” with comedian Andy Kindler, and recently co-starred in the feature film “The Fiddling Horse” (2020).

Two great interviews back to back weeks?!?! What a time to be alive! This week, the boys get the amazing pleasure of sitting down and talking to professional puppeteer and theme park entertainer extraordinaire, Kelsey Ann Brady! You might recognize Kelsey from her work as Crow in Netflix's Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return, or maybe from her stint as the American Werewolf in Halloween Horror Nights. Either way, has she got some great stories, and advice for us! As big fans of the original classic movie riff show, Ben and Will get super pumped to talk all things Crow, Tom Servo, and Joel, and just what goes into remaking a classic for a modern audience. If you are a fan of the Orlando parks, you'll also enjoy Kelsey's backstage stories from there as well! So much to talk about, so little time! This Island Earth).
The battle of the bots concludes but this time instead of just duking it out with Tom Servo & Crow T. Robot, we added Gypsy to the bracket to make it an even more epic geeky debate. Mike, Teresa & Gil are back and giddy as usual but we also mark the guest debut on the show for filmbuff himself, Jamie Ray (Fave Five from Fans Podcast)! In this special edition of The Word Balloon podcast, we speak withWriter/performer Kevin Murphy best known to fans as the voice of Tom Servo, the Gumball machine shaped robot sidekick to humans Joel Hodgeson and Mike Nelson (and fellow robot Crow) on the 90's cable comedy show Mystery Science Theater 3000."I started playing Tom Servo in the 2nd season, the first year on the Comedy Central, but I was involved with every episode of MST3k from the pilot of the local tv show, to the last episode aired on the Sci-Fi Channel."Murphy is still cracking wise, firing one-liners at the screen, whilefans view films from the cheesiest black and white b-movies to today's box office hits as a member of RiffTrax.com with former MST3K co-hosts and writers Mike Nelson and Tom Corbett (The 2nd actor who played Crow)Just like their cable shows, rifftrax sells .mp3 performances of the trio lampooning sci-fi staples like Plan 9 From Outer Space and newer films like Daredevil, The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, The Harry Potter films, and The Dark Knight. "We're the commentary that isn't available on your DVD, but should be." Kevin also talks about the upcoming nationwide live Christmas Rifftrax show December 16th, and an encore presentation the 17th beaming to nearly 500 theaters in the country. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3143082/advertisement
Politicians and pundits paint Artificial Intelligence as an existential threat to humans. It's just a bunch of sophisticated code right now: programmed to seem intelligent, but what happens when the programmed fakeness becomes genuinely sentient? At what point should AI have rights? The 3-Ds debate. Along the way, they discover the ethical flaw in the Star Wars franchise when it comes to droids; realize that the biggest existential threat to the Empire is R2D2; and reveal to the world the awesome might of the Force Tickle. ------------- For more of our shenanigans, be sure to follow us on Twitter! So what happens when you review a review, or parody a parody? We're not really sure. But, we are gonna try by reviewing some of the best of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and the Jokesters, Mike, Joel, Tom Servo, and Croooooooow! for the month of June.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 premiered on KTMA (a UHF station in Hopkins Minnesota) at 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1988. The premise was (and still is) fairly simple. An average Joe… or Joel in this case… is shot into space by his evil bosses and forced to watch bad movies as part of an experiment. Joel can't choose where the movie begins or ends. Because he used those parts to make his robot friends Cambot, CPC, Tom Servo and Crow. Servo and Crow aid Joel as they sit through bad movies making snide comments and quips which is now commonly referred to as “movie riffing”. It's a show you either get or you don't get. For those of us who DO get it, it taps into something we all do naturally while watching a bad movie. Making comments on how bad the movie is. And that's why we find it so funny. Because the crew at Mystery Science Theater 3000 has perfected the art of “movie riffing” There must be something in the water in Minnesota that makes them so good at it. The original run of MST3K ended in 1999. Since then the original cast has not been quiet. They've started other movie riffing projects such as the Film Crew, RiffTrax, Cinematic Titanic and The Mads are Back, But most recently MST3K has made a triumphant return with original showrunner Joel Hodgeson. First on Netflix and most recently launching their own streaming platform called The Gizmoplex. Both were funded through record breaking Kickstarter Campaigns. Join Bret and Andrew as they talk about their love for MST3K, their favorite episodes and characters. And if you're wondering how they eat or breathe. Or other scientific facts. Just repeat to yourself it's just a podcast. I really should relax.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 is back for a 13th season. Joel Hodgson, who created MST3K, and Emily Marsh join Jonah Ray and robot friends Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot to watch bad movies and make wisecracks. The venerable show first premiered in 1988 and has won a Peabody Award winning and been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards. You can watch new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 starting May 6 at the website mst3k.com or by accessing the Gizmoplex app on iOS, Android and on platforms like Apple TV, Roku and Amazon FireTV. We watched some cheesy movies. The worst, we could find. We had to sit and watch them all, and we lost our minds. Because today we're reviewing the cult classic TV show: Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K). Can we match the snark of Crow T. Robot? The zaniness of Tom Servo? Probably not, but we had to watch some pretty awful films, so you have to listen to us talk about them! Steven McClintock returns to TalkandRockRadio with a special Christmas episode. Steven is an American singer, songwriter, and a music producer, with almost 20 million records sold to his credit. He has written top 40 hit songs in country, pop and AOR. He has been a part of the music group Fertitta & McClintock (with David Fertitta) since the mid-1970s (they won the "Overall Grand Prize" and "Best Group/Duo" at the International Acoustic Music Awards). He also has done solo work like the song "Maybe Love" on the Jetsons: The Movie soundtrack, as well as "Edge of a Dream", the soundtrack to the movie Space Mutiny, which was memorably lambasted by the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the song was likewise mocked when it appears in the closing credits, with the 'bots (Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot) "singing along" using lyrics from other tracks. In January 2009, the track was finally released commercially through McClintock's official Myspace website.
After a divisive first part, Masters of the Universe: Revelation returns with its final five episodes, so we decided to see what all the fuss (if any) was about. We welcomed back 'Alpha Magnus' Toby Hixon and newcomer, Dave Kindler from Tom Servo's Used Robots to discuss Kevin Smith's new marketing approach, Hulk Adam, HeVil-Lyn, equity casting and of course, battle boners. So if you've got the power, check out Episode 130! Hosted by: 'Captain Boomerang' Greig Tansley (@GreigT13). Featuring: 'Macho Man He-Man Savage' Alphamagnus Toby Hixon (@Alphamagnus) & Dave Kindler (@tomservosusedrobots). Music by: Bear McCreary.

This week we're off to the Satellite of Love as we talk with Conor McGriffin (better known for his work as Tom Servo) and Emily Marsh (better known as Emily Conor on the MST3K live show... but coming to TV soon!) We learned about the hard work of watching bad movies and trying to make them enjoyable. What they brought to their characters and whether it's easier to watch a new terrible movie each week, or watch the same one for months. For more information on the show and the new episodes featuring Emily & Conor, check out the MST3K website. Get tickets to see Emily and Conor on the Time Bubble Live show here and, of course, check out their personal websites, if you're into that kind of thing.
Kevin Murphy was a writer and performer on the legendary comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000 which was the Comedy Channel's break out hit when we launched the network in 1989. - In addition to writing for the show he was the voice of Tom Servo for most of the show's ten seasons on both Comedy Central and the Sci Fi Channel as well as the aptly titled feature film Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. After a run one hundred and ninety-seven episodes, Murphy took a sabbatical from watching and commenting on bad movies and in 2001 spent the year by going to a different movie every day and wrote a book about this experience, entitled A Year at the Movies: One Man's Filmgoing Odyssey. - In 2006, he joined fellow MST 3k alumni Mike Nelson and Bill Corbett on Riff Trax whose stated goal is "WE MAKE MOVIES FUNNY". - Kevin, Mike and Bill have riffed on 431 feature films, 387 film shorts and 16 TV shows. - Riff Trax has such a huge fan base that have been able to raise over three million dollars on Kickstarter which allowed them to license and riff on a higher caliber of bad films, - They also perform as Riff Trax Live where they host in-theater special events. These events are filmed in front of a live audience and simulcast to over 700 cinema screens all over the country with their partner Fathom Events. - You can watch RiffTrax 24/7 on the Pluto streaming service where they have their own channel!

In the not-too-distant future (next Sunday A.D.), there is a guy named Joel, not too different from the hosts of this week's episode, in that he has recently been reading The King In Yellow. Or rather, watching a filmed production of The King In Yellow - the only one known to remain. See, Joel has spent years in space aboard the Satellite of Love thanks to the evil Dr. Forrester and his dimwitted assistant, Frank, who regularly subject Joel to the worst films they can find, FOR SCIENCE. But thanks to Joel's ingenious creation of the riffing robots Tom Servo and Crow, he and his mechanical buddies have resisted all efforts from "the Mads" to drive them over the mental edge, blasting cheesy B-movies apart with an endless supply of jokes and turning legitimately terrible scripts into satirical sketch comedy, much to the Forrester's chagrin. This movie is different, though. This is no poorly-acted financial flop featuring teenagers from outer space or a satanic Freddy Mercury. Since first coming to light via the short stories of Robert Chambers in 1895, The King In Yellow is a disturbing, sinister work of decadent nihilism that has a habit of driving those who read it into paranoia, delusion, sexual perversion, and violence. Its history is shrouded in the thick fog of the unknown; any knowledge of its origins and subsequent passage through the world has gone unrecorded, save for a few cases -- and the reliability of even those sources is questionable at best. Like the secret Lovecraftian horrors to which it provides humanity a brief, dreadful glimpse, it was never meant to be seen by mortal beings. Or, if it was, we must ask what sort of vile author would attempt to doom us all with such an act (well, two acts, actually). Can Joel and the Bots use their wit and riffing abilities to withstand the sanity-destroying effects of a movie that is not just bad, but that inflicts supernatural damage to the psyche while also being bad? Or will Hastur the Unspeakable (shit, sorry) lead them like puppets into the bleak realm of the Hyades and dim Carcosa? Kris Newton of the Gameable Podcast and MegaDumbCast returns to Smash Fiction to help us find out, and folks, he has come prepared. The Yelling Sign is found, the dreaded name of Monster a Go-Go is invoked, and at least one of our regular hosts goes insane by the end of opening arguments. Not upon us, oh King, not upon us! Far-Too-Late Disclaimer: Yeah, I'm afraid you definitely shouldn't have read that description, because while it may have seemed long-winded and banal, you now have no choice but to listen to this episode in full. We apologize for the impending insanity.

Frank Miller calls Pratt "one of the true masters of comic art." Long before the term "graphic novel" entered the popular lexicon - ten years before Will Eisner's A Contract with God - Hugo Pratt pioneered the long-form "drawn literature" story. Corto Maltese set the standard for all adult adventure comics in Europe. By the mid-1970s, Corto was the continent's most popular series and Hugo Pratt the world's leading graphic novelist. Hugo Pratt's peripatetic sailor was featured in a series of twenty-nine stories. The adventures of this modern Ulysses are set during the first thirty years of the 20th Century in such exotic locales as Pratt's native Venice, the steppes of Manchuria, the Caribbean islands, the Danakil deserts, the Amazon forests, and the waves of the Pacific. EuroComics is working closely with Patrizia Zanotti, Pratt's long-time collaborator, to present the complete Corto Maltese in a series of twelve quality trade paperbacks in Pratt's original oversized B&W format. Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans sound like just a nightmare. "MST3K" has announced a 30th-anniversary live tour may be coming to a city near you. It will feature reboot host Jonah Ray, Crow, Tom Servo … and Joel Hodgson. Hodgson wrote in a statement, "We’ll be performing two completely different shows as part of the tour, featuring two incredibly strange and cheesy feature films: The Brain, a Canadian sci-fi suburban nightmare, and Deathstalker, a fun sword and sandal epic with some surprisingly muppety monsters! As with last year, these are two completely different shows they’ll be alternating throughout the tour. Beginning on October 9 in Portland, ME, the tour will last six weeks, span 29 cities, and comprise 42 shows. Tickets go on sale to the general public 10 pm ET on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. MST3K bots - The bots from “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” Host John Siracusa and Jason Snell.
Happy Holidays, to you... And thanks for taking time out of your holiday season, be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Festivus or Celebration Of The Goofer Man, to spend an hour or so with me and my guests. And what guests we have. The cast of the new Mystery Science Theater is here today, Jonah Ray, Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yount, the new Jonah Heston, Tom Servo and crow respectively, and the author of one of my favorite books to come out this year The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels and The History Of American Comedy, Kliph Nesteroff.Speaking of standup comedy, if you'd like to see me, I will be ringing in the new year in Austin, Texas Dec 31, 1st and 2nd, nd returning to San Francisco for Sketchfest January 22nd, 23rd and 24th. For details on all this malarky, go to DanaGould.com.
Kevin and the Mayor are back in Chickentown with a full report on the craziest convention of the year: DragonCon! Featuring: Land of the Lost's Will, Holly, Chaka, and a Sleestak; Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey; the Karate Kid and Ponyboy Curtis; Match Game in the 25th Century; Mystery Science Theater 3000's Joel, Trace, Frank, and a photobombing Tom Servo; concerts by Molly Lewis, Mikey Mason, and Anaria; way more chicken-themed costumes than you'd expect; and yes, a Weird Al Dalek. 'Twas a long, strange weekend -- hopefully we'll readjust to reality (and catch up on our sleep) just in time for DragonCon 2015. Meanwhile, Kornflake prepares for National Play-Doh Day, which suddenly seems quite reasonable and mature.
