IKUKA pastry and dessert shop at State Street Market in Los Altos takes its name from the first syllables of the Japanese words imo (sweet potato), kuri (chestnut), and kabocha (pumpkin). The goal of its creator and general manager, Miyuki Ozawa, is to bring the namesake flavors popular in Japanese baking to the South Bay. Miyuki created the idea of IKUKA alongside her mother, Kuniko Ozawa, a prolific Bay Area restauranteur. In addition to Kuniko's five other South Bay Japanese American restaurants, including Orenchi Ramen (also at State Street Market), Sumika Grill, & Ogiku Kaiseki, Miyuki is putting her stamp on Japanese cuisine in the Bay. In keeping with the theme of mental health awareness this month, this week I'm sharing with you about yet another outside-the-box therapy modality. This one involves horses.   I first became curious about equine therapy (aka “horse therapy”) when Linny was in residential mental health treatment. In the programming at “res” (as it's often called), each week the treatment facility would take participants on a trek out to a place that specialized in equine-assisted psychotherapy. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy has been shown to help with a myriad of challenges – such as, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, anger management, trauma and recovery. The horses act as a sort of a mirror for the person they are working with and provide direct and non-judgmental feedback that helps clients to become grounded in the present moment, identify unproductive patterns, and create change in the moment. (You can check out Stand InBalance for more information.) In this week (and next week's) episode, I talk with equine-assisted therapeutic facilitator, Kuniko Vroman. I connected with Kuniko after having repeated soul-stirrings that kept nudging me to try equine therapy. By following a series of Divinely inspired breadcrumbs, I connected with Kuniko and, before returning to work from my leave of absence, met with her weekly for a short while to see what this horse therapy thing was all about.  If you haven't noticed by now--I'm a talker. So, when Kuniko and I sat down to talk about all things equine-assisted psychotherapy/therapeutic services, we talked…and talked…and talked. The next thing I knew, we'd been talking for over 2 hours! We covered so many good subjects that I couldn't bring myself to edit our conversation down to only one episode. Entrevista com Kuniko Yonaha, chegou no Brasil em 1963 com apenas 11 anos de idade. Conhecida como Dona Maria, vende suas receitas em alguns pontos aqui em São Paulo, mas o mais conhecido fica na feira da praça Charles Miller, em frente ao estádio do Pacaembu. Quem passa por ali encontra pastéis de diferentes sabores, desde os clássicos carne, queijo, palmito e também os recheios especiais. Tinha 14 anos quando os pais mudaram de ramo e montaram uma barraca de pastel de feira. Sua rotina: voltava da feira, fazia os recheios dos pasteis e a massa até às oito da noite. Acordava de madrugada para montar os pastéis. Quando terminava, já estava na hora de ir novamente para feira. Naquela época, não havia maquinário, freezer e muito menos infraestrutura que existe hoje. Aprendeu muito, montou sua própria barraca de pastéis e sempre acreditou no sucesso de seu negócio. Hoje, seus quitutes saborosos são encontrados em seis feiras livres espalhadas pela cidade e na bonita loja do bairro de Pinheiros. Seu famoso pastel de carne ganhou o concurso de melhor da cidade em 2009 e 2011 e também 4 vezes pela Revista Veja São Paulo. O pastel da Maria é crocante e sequinho. Leva alho, cebola, tomate, salsinha, azeite e gengibre. Tudo isso lhe dá um sabor especial e irresistível. Outro segredo, é frito na temperatura de 180° (graus). Limpeza, higiene e atendimento caprichado também explicam o sucesso deste quitute que caiu no gosto dos paulistanos e virou mania na cidade. @pasteldamariaoficial

The gold miners and juniors are trading at significant lows despite the yellow metal pushing through $1,800 this week, noted Greg Johnson, CEO of Metallic Minerals and chair of the Metallic Group. On Friday Johnson recorded Kitco Roundtable podcast with Mining Audiences Manager Michael McCrae and Kitco correspondent Paul Harris. Gold and gold equities were near an all-time high a year ago, noted Johnson. Since then prices have slid with the VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners down 28%. "The juniors tend to correct more. They also go up more during the upper legs of the cycle," said Johnson. "We're coming out of a summer...a lot of people checked out. I'm optimistic that we may see better markets in September. The [past] 12 months is quite a healthy correction, and it's presented a real investment opportunity. The podcast also referenced the Financial Review's coverage of Kuniko.
