Former Japanese Olympic Skiers Aiko Uemura, Kentaro Minagawa Announce Divorce
Like it or not, Japan has become one of the most critical actors in contemporary international politics. Read by Helen Lloyd. Image: A naval exercise conducted by Japan. Credit: World History Archive / Alamy Stock Photo
Today I have a conversation with pastor Kentaro Matsuda about how he reaches people who haven't lost their faith, but have stepped away from church. He recently translated Frank Viola's 'Pagan Christianity' into Japanese, and we talk about that too.
Kentaro Toyama spent a decade designing technologies to fight global poverty and improve education and health. As co-founder of Microsoft Research India lab, he made a troubling discovery – innovative technologies can't create change on their own. Realizing that social progress depends more on people than on the technology they use, Kentaro became a self-proclaimed “geek heretic” who now teaches others the importance of putting people over tech. Kentaro Toyama is W.K. Kellogg Professor of Community Information at the University of Michigan, a fellow of the Dalai Lama Center at MIT, and author of Geek Heresy. Kentaro is also the co-founder of Microsoft Research India, where he helped grow the lab into 60 full-time research staff. In this episode, Dart and Kentaro discuss:- Why technology needs a human touch to succeed- Kentaro's leadership at Microsoft Research India- The 10 fallacies of technology- Why the most important areas of focus are unmeasurable - The pitfalls of focusing on the end-goal- How to create societal change- Innovation versus tried-and-true approaches- The law of amplification- 3 elements of intrinsic growth- And other topics…Kentaro Toyama is W.K. Kellogg Professor of Community Information at the University of Michigan School of Information, a fellow of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at MIT, and author of Geek Heresy: Rescuing Social Change from the Cult of Technology. Before moving to Michigan, Kentaro co-founded Microsoft Research India, where he helped grow the lab into 60 full-time research staff. Kentaro received his PhD in Computer Science from Yale and his bachelors in mathematics from Harvard University. He went on to establish the Technology for Emerging Markets research group, which investigates how the world's poorest communities interact with technology and ways to support socioeconomic development. Kentaro is also a former researcher for UC Berkeley and former co-editor-in-chief of the Information Technologies and International Development journal.Resources mentioned:Geek Heresy, by Kentaro Toyama: https://www.amazon.com/Geek-Heresy-Rescuing-Social-Technology/dp/161039528X Connect with Kentaro:www.kentarotoyama.org

One of AM's henchmen stages the breakdown of another truck on the first truck's route and kills its driver. He opens the truck's trailer, revealing three other henchmen and the missiles. Neagley and Dixon who have been chasing the first truck come upon the scene, just after the henchmen have switched the trailers. The henchmen try to kill Neagley and Dixon. The first henchman drives off with the missiles before Neagley and Dixon kill the other three. In the paperwork Neagley and Dixon received from the New Age's Denver facility manager, they learn that Swan had allowed the missiles to leave New Age. Directed by: Hiromi Kamata Written by: Mariko Tamaki Aired: December 22, 2023 Summary In 2015, May is kidnapped at the airport in Tindouf, Algeria by her former employer, Applied Experimental Technologies, who gives her the choice of spying on Monarch or being prosecuted. Cate accosts Tim when he arrives at the airport and asks him to help locate May. Tim, Cate, and Kentaro find May's family in Tacoma, Washington, and learn about her past from her sister, Lyra. They trigger a false Titan alert to rescue May from AET, but she chooses not to spy on Monarch and stay behind. Verdugo is convinced by Cate to secure May's release in exchange for help understanding Shaw's plans, and by Tim to take Monarch public as an explanation for the alert. After reaching an agreement with Monarch, AET rebrands to Apex Cybernetics. Shaw and Duvall take over the Alaskan Monarch outpost and detonate a rift to the Hollow Earth to seal it. Meanwhile, back in Denver, AM kills a plastic surgeon in an attempt to steal his identity before flying to New York. The team tracks the senator to Boston, where Dixon helps Oscar Finlay arrest the senator's aide to coerce information out of him. The aide reveals to Reacher and O'Donnell that Little Wing is a missile program designed to enable terrorist attacks, and is being held at their facilities in Denver and New York. Later that night, the team is ambushed by a biker gang, but manages to kill them. Reacher then phones Langston, who attempts to bribe him into going away, but Reacher refuses and proclaims that he wants to throw him out of a helicopter. Infamous Shirts for Naked Bodies... In Pohang, they are accosted by border guards before one of them, Du-Ho, reveals himself as Shaw's old friend. Du-Ho transports them to Alaska by plane; on the way, May infers from Bill Randa's files that Hiroshi was likely following a list of coordinates identified by Monarch. In Alaska, they find the wreckage of Hiroshi's plane as well as an encampment suggesting his survival. Du-Ho realizes that Hiroshi's plane was attacked after landing; a Frost Vark kills him and destroys his plane. In 1954, Shaw has joined Monarch in a command position. He, Randa, and Miura present a cast of Godzilla's footprint from Indonesia to Shaw's superior officer, Gen. Puckett, to secure uranium to lure Godzilla out of hiding. In Bikini Atoll, Randa and Miura are horrified to discover that Puckett has delivered the uranium in the form of a nuclear bomb intended to kill Godzilla as part of the Castle Bravo test. As Godzilla surfaces, Miura attempts to halt the detonation, but Shaw restrains her. In the aftermath, Shaw is given a blank check by Puckett for Monarch to research the Titans. Episode 4: Parallels and Interiors Summary In 2015, the Frost Vark's emergence was detected by Monarch. Cate, Kentaro, May, and Shaw manage to escape from the Frost Vark, but May falls into a pool of water and quickly develops hypothermia as they try to find shelter. Kentaro splits off from the rest of the group and finds a building that he saw from the plane, which turns out to be an old radio station that Hiroshi had previously repaired. Having learned that the Frost Vark feeds on heat energy, Cate, May, and Shaw create a bonfire to distract it, long enough for a helicopter that Kentaro contacted to arrive and rescue them. The group is taken to a Monarch facility, where they are greeted by Tim and Duvall. In 2014, Kentaro met May while waiting for his first art show at a prestigious gallery. He chooses to spend the evening with her instead of preparing for the show, and they bond. It's ultimately revealed that Kentaro decided to present his art before he was ready to do so, out of a desire to make his father proud, and that the night of the gallery was the last time he saw Hiroshi before the latter's disappearance. Episode 5: The Way Out Summary In 2015, Monarch deputy director Verdugo is frustrated to learn that Shaw had kept Cate, Kentaro, and May in the dark about the true nature of Hiroshi's activities in Alaska. Duvall suggests releasing the three to track their movements. After returning to San Francisco, Cate convinces her mother, Caroline, and Caroline's colleague James to smuggle them towards Hiroshi's office in a restricted zone of the city's ruins. Evading military patrols and dealing with Cate's PTSD, they eventually reach Hiroshi's office. While they fail to find further hidden files, Kentaro concludes from Hiroshi's maps that he likely headed to Africa in search of Titans. May secretly contacts Duvall, asking to go home in exchange for her cooperation. In 2014, two days before Godzilla's emergence, Cate was in a relationship with fellow teacher Dani. On G-Day, feeling guilt over having cheated on Dani, Cate chooses to leave her behind to escort a bus of children across the Golden Gate Bridge. Many of the children are killed when Godzilla destroys the bridge during his clash with the military. Infamous Shirts for Naked Bodies... She discovers that he had a second wife and a son, Kentaro, in Japan. Kentaro leads Cate to Hiroshi's office, where she discovers a safe containing files belonging to their grandfather, Monarch researcher Bill Randa. Seeking answers about Monarch's presence in San Francisco and Hiroshi's connection to them, Cate and Kentaro recruit Kentaro's ex-girlfriend May Olowe-Hewitt to decode the files. Monarch employee Tim is notified of their attempt. In 1959, Cate and Kentaro's grandparents, Bill Randa and Keiko Miura, follow radiation in Kazakhstan with fellow Monarch official Col. Lee Shaw. A local boy claims that the radiation is a cover story for the government drilling a hole through the earth. Randa and Miura discover that radiation levels drop to zero around a power plant, and that hollow caverns exist in the bedrock beneath it. Venturing inside, they discover eggs belonging to insectoid Endoswarmers. Miura and Shaw rappel down to collect genetic material from the eggs, but the Endoswarmers awaken and drag Miura into the caverns below. Episode 2: Departure Summary In 2015, Kentaro discovers Monarch files in Hiroshi's office indicating that Shaw, his great-uncle, moved to an assisted living facility in Japan. Tim and Monarch field operative Duvall track down Cate, Kentaro, and May in an attempt to find the decoded files, but they escape. Cate, Kentaro, and May go on the run and find Shaw, who reveals that the facility is a pretense for Monarch to keep him under house arrest. Shaw convinces them to escape from the facility and follow Hiroshi to his last known location in Alaska. In 1952, Shaw is assigned as Miura's escort on an expedition following unusual radiation in the Philippines. They meet Randa in the jungle, who claims to be following folk tales of a fire-breathing dragon. Miura recruits Randa against a skeptical Shaw's advice, and Shaw departs. Continuing alone, Miura and Randa discover the wreckage of the USS Lawton, a Navy ship that sank in 1943 from which Randa was the sole survivor. They discover corpses in the ship and are attacked by an Ion Dragon. Having seen the Ion Dragon's radiation-based fire, Shaw returns to rescue them from the ship. Infamous Shirts for Naked Bodies... Providing a comprehensive toolkit for collecting, curating and presenting critical data about a company's carbon footprint, Persefoni provides that all-important transparency to everyone from government regulators to private equity investors, helping people make the real right choices for the future of our planet as well as their portfolio. We also speak about why sustainability has always been a part of their life since growing up in a German farming community, why it's time carbon reporting caught up with financial accounting, the regulations forcing companies to reconsider their approach to sustainability, and why, for most businesses, true environmental impact reports are only just becoming a part of reality. Topics Discussed: Growing up in a German agricultural community, where sustainability has always been synonymous with scarcity Kentaro's career across the tech sector, from big enterprise players to the startup space The driving forces behind better carbon reporting, from regulators on one side and government regulators on the other Why carbon reporting remains really left behind when it comes to data integration, and how Persefoni is planning to change all that The complexity of contemporary supply chains and the real-world limitations of carbon footprint reporting confronting most firms Why Kentaro didn't seek out typical Silicon Valley investors on board at the start of Persefoni's journey Favorite book: The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company
Last week, a few thousand sustainability professionals gathered for the annual GreenBiz conference hosted by GreenBiz Group. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we're on the ground talking with panelists and attendees about the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the space — from regulation, disclosure requirements and supply chains to environmental justice, employee wellbeing and burnout. Many attendees expressed frustration and a general sense of being overwhelmed by the pace of change and the challenges facing the sustainability space. In the face of this uncertainty, the message from many panelists was: Whatever the topic, you have to start somewhere. We hear from Kentaro Kawamori, CEO of climate software firm Persefoni, who urges companies to avoid “analysis paralysis.” “You've just got to get started. And if you're searching for perfect, you're never going to find it,” Kentaro says. We talk to Deloitte's Kristen Sullivan and Evan Harvey, who led a three-hour, standing-room-only climate disclosure bootcamp at the conference to help companies understand how proposed rules from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission could impact them. “As we were wrapping up, we were trying to get a pulse on the audience in terms of... did this help you feel more prepared, this type of a session?” Kristen says. “The answer was ‘yes — and at the same time, I'm really scared.'” We also speak to Yinka Bode-George, CEO of environmental justice-focused nonprofit Sustain our Future Foundation. "People are getting the idea that environmental justice is not just this nice-to-have, it's actually a really central component of winning on the climate crisis and putting forward the most effective solutions," Yinka tells us. In the episode, we also sit down with Tim Mohin, the former CEO of international standards organization the Global Reporting Initiative, or GRI; Nasdaq Global Head of ESG Solutions Randall Hopkins; UPS Sustainability Director Stakeholder Engagement Elba Pareja-Gallagher; Zack Parisa, CEO of forest carbon marketplace the Natural Capital Exchange, or NCX; and Jared Connors from supply chain sustainability management company Assent. Our season finale covers startup investments that are on the absolute cutting edge. We're joined by Maryanna Saenko, an early-stage venture capitalist and the Co-founder of Future Ventures (early investors in SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, Planet, and Skype). Backing visionaries for over two decades through her firm, Maryanna gets to play a part in technology that ranges from Bee Immunology to Nuclear Fusion. She's also worked on lunar rovers, martian landers, driverless cars, and long-range low-frequency communication systems. On the show, we cover ‘frontier tech' and companies in the portfolio at Future Ventures. We also got to reference all of my favorite sci-fi movies (some of which it seems like Maryanna is trying to bring to life) and we even talked about poetry in our rapid fire round!
