To the police officers who came to the porch of his Baton Rouge church to order it closed, to the White House liaison who called him, to people slamming him across social media, Pastor Tony Spell has a response: What about Planned Parenthood?   In March of 2020, Rev. Tony Spell was ordered to cease having worship services at Life Tabernacle Church because of Governor John Bel Edwards' ban on gatherings of more than 50 people. Pastor Spell has been arrested numerous times, placed in jail, and accused of several violations of Governor Edwards' orders. He was told not to assemble for worship services, much like the authorities of old demanded the early church not to “teach nor preach in Jesus' name” (Acts 4:18).   Pastor Spell has been under house arrest. He was forced to wear an ankle bracelet because he will not abandon his convictions. He has been penalized for adhering to a sacred obligation based upon God's command to not forsake the assembling of the church together (Hebrews 10:25).   Next week, Spell will appear in court facing six misdemeanors after continuing in-person church services despite the state's stay-at-home order. Judge Roy Moore will be representing Pastor Tony Spell.   A “Strike a Blow for Freedom” rally will take place on June 7 at the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans Fifth District Court.   Please watch, listen, and share!   The Mark Harrington Show is on Mark's Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts. Last Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered a lower court to reexamine California's restrictions on indoor religious services. This coming a week after another victory for religious groups when the High Court decided against limits on churches and synagogues in New York. While many see these as key wins for religious liberty, some believe COVID-19 restrictions are still too strict on houses of worship and are violating the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans. Tony Spell, the pastor of the Life Tabernacle Church in Louisiana, has stirred controversy and was even arrested after holding services despite his state's rules against gatherings.  Pastor Spell joined host Lisa Brady on the FOX News Rundown recently to discuss his legal fight and why he believe churches like his should not have to abide to capacity limitations and other COVID-19 restrictions. The original interview was too long and we could not include our entire conversation with Pastor Spell. On The FOX News Rundown Extra, you will hear everything Pastor Spell had to say about what he calls a fight for religious freedom,  the financial burdens churches have been coping with since the beginning of the pandemic and the importance of religion during times of crisis.   Learn more about your ad choices. We're now a month and a day since the Presidential election and President Trump is insisting that if only legal voters were counted, he would be re-elected. The courts have not agreed so far, but that is not stopping the President. Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday, discusses how the ongoing election challenges could impact the outcome of Georgia's Senate runoff races. Wallace also weighs in on the Biden's administration picks, a potential rift in the Democratic party and politicians who are breaking their own Covid-19 restrictions. The U.S. Supreme Court gave a temporary win to a California church fighting California Governor Gavin Newsom's restrictions on the number of people allowed at houses of worship due to the coronavirus. The ruling comes after a 5-4 decision that blocked New York Governor Andrew Cuomo from re-imposing strict attendance caps at worship services in areas hit hard by the virus. Pastor Tony Spell of the Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana reacts to the SCOTUS ruling and the importance of the First Amendment. He also shares the obstacles his church has been dealing with during the pandemic and the highs and lows he's heard from people when it comes to keeping the faith during these hard times. At the taping of this podcast, the world is going through a pandemic and a needed up rise for racial injustice; however, in the midst of it all, the church in the way it has traditionally been effective isn’t able to be effective based on churches being closed. There’s been backlash and disparity between whether churches can be open in this climate due to the pandemic, and there has been backlash to why churches are close. There has also been division between the body of Christ itself on the position of opening churches or keeping them close. They have had spiritual leaders call the churches that have remained closed faithless, and other spiritual leaders call the churches that have remained open unwise by putting people in danger. This podcast will be the first in a series called, “The Faith of the Church”. We will call part 1: “Should the door of the Church Be Open”. We are addressing the position of keeping the church open versus the position of them staying closed, based on faith. A pastor that has received national recognition based on his stance during this pandemic resides in Louisiana by the name of Tony Spell. Pastor Spell is the senior pastor for Life Tabernacle Church in Central, Louisiana. Pastor Spell was arrested on March 31 and charged with six misdemeanors for violating the order, but he has vowed to continue holding services.

Bernie Sanders officially drops out of the presidential race, leaving Joe Biden as the presumptive nominee. It’s worth noting how much the Bernie Sanders campaign has fundamentally shifted the Democratic party’s base to the left, even while power in the party still remains firmly entrenched with the neoliberal baby boomers. Writing in In These Times, Megan Day and Michael Uetricht captured the moment perfectly, “Bernie Sanders Started the Revolution, the Rest is Up to Us.” In what appears to be an attempt to woo Sanders supporters to consider voting for him, Joe Biden released plans to lower the Medicare eligibility age to 60 and to forgive some student debt. I don’t know how many times we have to say it, but half-measures and tinkering around the edges just isn’t going to cut it. That was the message sent this week in a letter written to Biden by 8 progressive groups - Alliance for Youth Action, Justice Democrats, IfNotNow Movement, March for Our Lives Action Fund, NextGen America, Student Action, Sunrise Movement, and United We Dream Action: “Messaging around a ‘return to normalcy’ does not and has not earned the support and trust of voters from our generation.” The numbers of COVID-19 cases continue to be devastating, even as some hot spots around the world have begun to see a flattening of their curves. Global confirmed cases: 1,596,496; total deaths: 95,455; total recovered: 354,006; U.S. confirmed cases: 462,135; total deaths: 16,513; total recovered: 25,410; and, nearly 17 million Americans file for unemployment over the past three weeks. Black Americans are getting COVID-19 and dying from the disease at alarmingly disproportionate rates. To anyone paying attention to deep structural racism in the U.S. it’s no mystery as to why. As the New York Times reports, this trend shines a spotlight on what “public health researchers say are entrenched inequalities in resources, health, and access to care.” This week, COVID-19 became the #1 cause of death each day, outpacing heart disease and cancer. Meanwhile, the Radical Christian Right is going off the rails, turning to embrace the coronavirus as some kind of godly messenger. For example, Tony Spell of Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge spoke to TMZ about his decision to defy the Governor’s ban of meetings larger than 50 people. Spell said, “like any revolutionary, or like any zealot, or like any pure religious person, death looks to them like a welcomed friend.”  Necessary listening: Rumble with Michael Moore discussion with Jane McEleavy.  Be warned, there is a high pollen warning across most of PA.  State Senator Robert Mensch, a Republican from Montgomery County, seems to be loving the shift of online meetings. He was caught on a hot mic saying that he liked the online sessions because he could “stare daggers at Muth,” referring to outspoken, progressive Democratic State Senator Kaie Muth, also from Montgomery County. Muth took to Twitter writing, “How was your day teleworking?  Welp, mine was full of #Daggers - misogyny beaming strong in virtual workplaces... too bad we couldn’t pass bills to actually help ppl, instead of mean-mugging on Zoom.” On Thursday, the Wolf administration announced that all Pennsylvania K-12 public and private schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. The PA hospital association is seeking a second round of financial assistance from the PA government just two weeks after Gov. Wolf signed a $50 million aid package.  Pennsylvania’s Independent Fiscal Office reports that the PA government may lose as much as $4 billion in tax revenues this year as a direct result of the pandemic. That could leave PA’s budget about $1.8 billion short. We’re flagging this for our shock doctrine report.  Despite Gov. Wolf’s stay-at-home orders, Pennsylvanians are getting worse at social distancing according to a new report. Data from a cell phone data company shows that after some initial successes, since March 26th, Pennsylvania’s are traveling more often and further.  On May 29, Netflix will finally release its new intergalactic comedy, “Space Force,” starring Steve Carell!   Sean got a new toy - actually TWO new toys. Free Will now has its two cider releases ready for your online order and pick up: Kurant Bees - Hard Cider with Honey 5.5% ABV Kurant Earth - Hard Cider w/ Mosaic Hops 5.5% ABV Another plug this week for DDH Love Letter from the 90s.
