Dana and Tom with special guest, Reed Arnold (Writer, Director, and Star of Do Us Part (2026)) discuss Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) for its 15th Anniversary: directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, written by Dan Fogelman, cinematography by Andrew Dunn, music by Christophe Beck and Nick Urata, editing by Lee Haxall, starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, and Kevin Bacon.Plot Summary: Up next is a film from 2011 that takes the age-old Hollywood trope of the cinematic makeover and turns it completely on its ear. It's Crazy, Stupid, Love. Now, when we meet Cal Weaver—played with a wonderful, understated desperation by Steve Carell—he is a man whose comfortable, suburban life has just evaporated over dessert. His high school sweetheart and wife of twenty-five years, played by a luminous Julianne Moore, announces she wants a divorce. Suddenly, Cal finds himself cast adrift in the unfamiliar and deeply hostile waters of the modern dating scene.Enter Jacob Palmer, a suave, cynical, and impossibly sharp-dressed bachelor who treats the local lounge like his own personal kingdom. He's played by Ryan Gosling, channeling the kind of effortless, magnetic charisma that would make Cary Grant proud. Jacob takes pity on our broken-hearted protagonist, deciding to mentor Cal in the fine arts of tailored suits, confident posture, and the precise chemistry of the pickup line. But what makes Dan Fogelman's screenplay so compelling isn't just the transformation of Cal. It is how the film expertly weaves multiple generations of romance into a single, chaotic tapestry. We see Cal's teenage son harboring a fierce, agonizing crush on his older babysitter, who in turn harbors her own secret affection. Meanwhile, Jacob—the ultimate, uncatchable playboy—finds his own defenses completely dismantled by a sharp-witted law student, played with incredible comic timing by Emma Stone. It's a film that balances the slick, sophisticated banter of classic 1930s screwball comedies with a raw, very contemporary vulnerability. It reminds us that no matter our age, experience, or wardrobe, love has a way of making fools out of all of us.Chapters00:12 Introduction to Crazy, Stupid, Love06:06 Exploring the Plot and Themes12:05 Character Relationships and Development18:10 Masculinity and Love in the Film24:05 The Makeover Trope and Its Implications33:14 Navigating Relationships and Growth34:38 The Evolution of Long-Term Relationships36:20 Understanding Relationship Dynamics38:16 Stereotypes and Relationship Expectations39:09 Behind the Scenes of Filmmaking42:15 Foreshadowing and Directorial Choices48:45 Cultural Moments in Film52:11 Influences and Inspirations in Filmmaking01:00:49 Antagonists and Character Dynamics01:04:27 Nostalgia and College Experiences01:06:48 Navigating the Film Festival Circuit01:09:23 The Fight for Attention in Film01:11:45 Personal Experiences in Storytelling01:20:11 Choosing Between Writing, Directing, and Acting01:37:01 Best Scene(s)01:45:21 Best Line(s)01:51:14 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy02:02:16 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty02:15:46 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness02:22:31 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:29:01 Final Questions and ThoughtsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Bluesky, Threads, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/crazy-stupid-love-2011-ft-reed-arnoldFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Crazy Stupid Love, movie review, film analysis, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, romantic comedy, anniversary, movie discussion, film critique, best rom-coms, Emma Stone, discussion, romantic, comedy, film discussion, movie scenes, Hollywood, Crazy, Stupid, Love movie, podcast, podcast discussion, podcast episode, movie podcast, film podcast, rom-com, legacy, classic, rewatch, novelty, audience scoreRonny Duncan Studios
In this episode, Cade and Diane discuss two films that premiered 40 years ago in theatres: Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and Miami Vice (2006).Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streamsDouble Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe.Little Miss Sunshine is a 2006 American tragicomedy film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (in their directorial debut) from a screenplay written by Michael Arndt. The film stars an ensemble cast consisting of Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin, and Alan Arkin, all of whom play members of a dysfunctional family taking the youngest (Breslin) to compete in a child beauty pageant.Miami Vice is a 2006 American action crime film produced, written, and directed by Michael Mann. It is an adaptation of the 1980s television series of the same name, which Mann produced. It stars Colin Farrell as James "Sonny" Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, MDSO detectives who go undercover to fight drug trafficking operations.
This week on Second Chance Cinema, MC and Spro blast off with Jason X, the wonderfully ridiculous tenth entry in the Friday the 13th franchise. Watched alongside our friend Conor, the movie sends Jason Voorhees into space, surrounds him with soldiers, scientists, an android, and plenty of futuristic victims, and somehow manages to become what might actually be the third-best Jason movie in the entire long, celebrated (or perhaps not-so-celebrated) series. Things take an unexpected turn when we begin imagining a very different ending: What if the nanotechnology had actually fixed Jason? What if it restored him as a completely ordinary man, played by Steve Carell, who suddenly had to live with the trauma and guilt of ten movies' worth of murder? Come for the liquid-nitrogen kills, stay for the accidental dramatic reinvention of Jason Voorhees, and be sure to stick around for bonus content at the end. #JasonX #FridayThe13th #JasonVoorhees #UberJason #HorrorMovies #SlasherMovies #SciFiHorror #HorrorComedy #CultMovies #BadMoviesWeLove #SecondChanceCinema #MoviePodcast #FilmPodcast #PodcastRecommendation #HorrorPodcast #MovieReview #KaneHodder #SteveCarell #Podbean #BonusContent

Movie of the Year: 2006Little Miss Sunshine (feat. Don Shanahan from Every Movie Has a Lesson!)Little Miss Sunshine Podcast: The Hoovers Hit the BracketThe Little Miss Sunshine podcast episode has arrived, and the Taste Buds are packing into the VW bus. This week, Movie of the Year puts one of 2006's biggest indie success stories through the tournament. Ryan, Mike, and Greg welcome film critic Don Shanahan to help judge the Hoover family's run at the crown. Together, the panel digs into the family dynamics, the unforgettable ending, the film's surprising philosophical streak, and the husband-and-wife directing team behind it all. Additionally, the crew squares off in a round of Trivia and builds a fashion-themed Rushmore. Can a sunny yellow bus carry this movie deep into the 2006 bracket? Push, hop in, and find out.About the FilmLittle Miss Sunshine follows the Hoover family on an 800-mile road trip from Albuquerque to Redondo Beach. Seven-year-old Olive has qualified for the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant, and the whole dysfunctional clan piles into a failing Volkswagen bus to get her there. The passenger list includes a failed motivational speaker, a suicidal Proust scholar, a Nietzsche-obsessed teen who refuses to speak, a heroin-snorting grandpa, and one very determined mom. Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris from Michael Arndt's screenplay, the film premiered at Sundance in January 2006. It became a box office sensation, grossing over $101 million on an $8 million budget. Moreover, it earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Alan Arkin won Best Supporting Actor, and Arndt took home Best Original Screenplay. RogerEbert.com called it a gentle family satire in the tradition of the countercultural comedies of the 1970s. Now the film faces its toughest challenge yet: the Movie of the Year 2006 bracket.Guest Panelist: Don ShanahanThe Taste Buds welcome film critic Don Shanahan to the panel. Don is a Chicago-based, Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic and the founder of the long-running review site Every Movie Has a Lesson. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief and Content Supervisor of the film department at Film Obsessive. Furthermore, Don co-hosts the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast on the Ruminations Radio Network. A school teacher by day, he writes his reviews with life lessons in mind, from the serious to the farcical. Don is a director and co-founder of the Chicago Indie Critics and a voting member of the Critics Choice Association and the Online Film Critics Society. Consequently, few guests arrive better equipped to grade a movie about winners, losers, and everything in between. The Hoover Family at the Heart of the Little Miss Sunshine PodcastEvery great road movie needs great passengers, and this one has six. The panel starts with the family itself. Richard preaches his nine-step winning program while his own career collapses. Sheryl holds everyone together with fried chicken and sheer will. Frank arrives fresh from a suicide attempt, and Dwayne has taken a vow of silence until he becomes a fighter pilot. Meanwhile, Grandpa coaches Olive's pageant routine with methods no pageant has ever approved. The Little Miss Sunshine podcast crew debates what makes this dysfunction feel so real. Notably, the film establishes the entire family in one legendary twenty-minute dinner scene. The Taste Buds and Don break down how each Hoover carries a private definition of failure. Ultimately, the group asks the big question: is this the best movie family of 2006?Breaking Down the Ending on the Little Miss Sunshine 2006 PodcastYou know the scene. Olive takes the stage at the pageant, "Super Freak" drops, and the movie explodes. The panel dedicates a full segment to one of the most famous endings of the decade. By contrast with the polished pageant contestants, Olive's routine is pure chaos, and the family's response is pure love. The Hoovers stop trying to win and start dancing. Don and the Taste Buds debate whether the finale earns its catharsis or leans on shock value. In addition, the crew discusses how the ending flips the film's winners-and-losers thesis on its head. Does the dance number seal the film's bracket run, or does it divide the panel? The episode holds nothing back.Nietzsche, Proust, and the Philosophy of LosingFew crowd-pleasers smuggle in this much philosophy. Dwayne worships Nietzsche and wears his contempt for conformity on his sleeve, or at least on his t-shirt. Frank, meanwhile, claims the title of preeminent Proust scholar in America. The panel unpacks why Michael Arndt built his comedy on these two thinkers. Frank's hospital-parking-lot speech about suffering becomes the film's secret thesis: the years of struggle are the years that make us. However, the movie never turns into a lecture. Instead, it hides its ideas inside gas station stops and highway breakdowns. The crew debates whether the philosophy holds up or simply decorates the road trip. Specifically, they ask what Nietzsche would think of a nine-step program for winning. The Directors: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie FarisHusband-and-wife team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris spent decades directing music videos before this debut feature. Their work with bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and R.E.M. sharpened an eye for visual storytelling on tight budgets. As a result, Little Miss Sunshine looks sun-bleached, precise, and effortlessly funny. The panel examines how the duo directs comedy through reaction shots rather than punchlines. The famous bus-pushing sequence becomes a masterclass in physical comedy and ensemble blocking. Additionally, the group traces the pair's later career through Ruby Sparks and Battle of the Sexes. Why did two music video veterans wait so long for a second film? The panel has theories, and some of them are even kind.TriviaNo Movie of the Year episode is complete without Trivia. The Taste Buds and Don test each other on all things Little Miss Sunshine. Production history, casting near-misses, pageant facts, and VW bus mechanics are all fair game. The film's six-year development saga and its record-setting Sundance sale provide plenty of ammunition. Who takes the crown this week? Listen and find out.Rushmore: FashionThis week's Rushmore segment tackles fashion. Each panelist carves their personal Mount Rushmore of movie fashion into the mountainside. Little Miss Sunshine gives the category a strong starting point. Olive's oversized glasses and red cowboy boots, Dwayne's brutal statement tees, and Richard's aggressively beige wardrobe all deserve consideration. Nevertheless, the panel ranges across all of film history for their picks. Expect passionate defenses, questionable taste, and at least one choice that starts an argument. Why Little Miss Sunshine Still MattersTwenty years later, Little Miss Sunshine remains the gold standard for the crowd-pleasing indie. It proved a tiny comedy could outgross blockbusters and crash the Best Picture race. Furthermore, its skepticism about hustle culture and toxic winning has only grown more relevant. Richard's nine steps sound like half the internet in 2026. The film also launched Abigail Breslin, revived Alan Arkin, and showed the world Steve Carell could break hearts. Above all, it argues that losing together beats winning alone. That message keeps the Little Miss Sunshine podcast conversation alive two decades after the bus first rolled. The Bear è ancora una comedy. Nelle comedy ritroviamo The Bear, Hacks, Abbott Elementary, Shrinking, Only Murders in the Building e le nuove Margo's Got Money Troubles e Widow's Bay. Tra le limited series si contendono il premio Beef, All Her Fault, The Beast in Me, DTF St. Louis e Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. e Carolyn Bessette. John & Roxy react to Despicable Me for the first time as our classic animated movie reaction journey continues with the Illumination movie that launched Gru, the Minions, and one of the biggest animated franchises ever! With the new Minions & Monsters movie arriving later this year, it felt like the perfect time to finally dive into the film that started it all. This Despicable Me movie reaction follows Gru's plan to steal the moon, his rivalry with Vector, Dr. Nefario's wild inventions, the Bank of Evil, cookie robots, shrink rays, and the chaotic first appearance of the Minions. In this Illumination Despicable Me reaction and Despicable Me full movie review, John & Roxy break down Steve Carell's hilarious performance as Gru, Jason Segel as Vector, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Julie Andrews, Russell Brand, and the surprisingly emotional story of Margo, Edith, and Agnes changing Gru's heart. From “It's so fluffy!” to the unicorn book, Super Silly Fun Land, the moon heist, and the Despicable Me ending breakdown where Gru finally becomes a real dad, this movie ended up being way more charming, funny, and heartfelt than expected. It also serves as a great reminder of why audiences fell in love with Gru and the Minions before all the sequels, spin-offs, and upcoming adventures expanded the franchise. In this Illumination animation reaction and Despicable Me 2 full movie review, John & Roxy break down Steve Carell as Gru, Kristen Wiig as Lucy, Benjamin Bratt as El Macho, Dr. Nefario leaving the jam and jelly business, Margo's first crush, Agnes's Mother's Day sadness, and the hilarious rise of the evil purple Minions. From the lipstick taser to El Macho's volcano plan, the jelly gun antidote, Gru and Lucy's romance, and the Despicable Me 2 ending breakdown with Agnes calling Lucy her new mom, this sequel brings even more Minion madness, spy movie energy, and surprisingly sweet family moments.
"Rooster" is an American comedy-drama series created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses and starring Steve Carell as well-tread and semi-dysfunctional author Greg Russo, who is working through his complicated relationship with his daughter Katie (Charly Clive). Set on the New England campus of Ludlow College, Katie, an art history instructor, is shown navigating campus life while separated from her husband (Phil Dunster), another professor at the fictional Ludlow, who has taken a graduate student as his new lover. The show also investigates academic and administrative waters. The series, which premiered earlier this spring, received positive reviews, with HBO renewing it for a second season. Dunster was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the show, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the show, which is available to watch HBO Max and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy! Netflix's charming comedy The Four Seasons follows a group of couples whose friendship dynamic is rocked by their mid-life crises. The impressive cast includes Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Colman Domingo, and Will Forte. And while the jokes may not fly quite as fast as they did on 30 Rock, Fey's comedic sensibilities are written all over it. The Four Seasons just returned for a second season, so we're revisiting our conversation about the series.Subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhour See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

For a while now (though mostly on Patreon), Moira and Adrian have examined a strange canon of films and texts about. powerful people being taken down by forces of social justice. Many of these take place on college campuses or near them (Oleanna, Deconstructing Harry,The Human Stain, After the Hunt); others center figures of the art world (Tàr). There have been a few new entries in this genre, and they tell us a lot about where our culture and are politics are with regards to consequences, impunity and powerful men. The focus in this conversation is the HBO show Rooster starring Steve Carell and Outcome starring Keanu Reeves.
We review the hit HBO/Crave series Rooster, the Steve Carell-led show that's somehow equal parts heartfelt family drama, academic satire, and absolute chaos. We talk through some of our favorite moments from the show as well as some of the standout performances and the many lovable characters. Also in this episode: What's bugging Josh, the mailbag, Josh's Montreal Poutine road trip, and Steve Kerr's idea to change the NBA. He discusses Scrubs returning with recreated sets in British Columbia and renewed cast dynamics, noting its modern medical themes and its reputation for medical accuracy. He also enjoys Shrinking for its relationships despite questionable psychotherapy realism. Moving darker, he recommends Ray Donovan for its pitch-perfect portrayal of family dysfunction and standout performances by Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight, comparing its quality to The Sopranos.
