In this stirring episode, we examine how modern culture often elevates celebrity over substance — even in places where truth and historical depth should matter most. When a college history book gives more attention to pop icons than to the foundational figures of our nation, it reveals something deeper: we are forgetting where we came from, and what once held us together. We look back at the profound moral expectations held by early American leaders, who understood that character, discipline, and virtue were essential for any people seeking freedom. Their convictions stand in sharp contrast to the confusion and moral drifting we see in society today. But this isn't just a history lesson — it's a spiritual wake‑up call. Scripture reminds us that “Now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.” The signs of the times point us to one truth: Jesus is coming soon. This episode urges listeners to:Rediscover the truth of their historyHold fast to biblical foundationsRecognize the urgency of the hourStrengthen their walk with ChristIt's time to open our eyes, awaken our hearts, and stand firmly on God's Word. The Voice in the Wilderness does not endorse any link or other material found at buzzsprout.More at https://www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org/

Welcome to the Personal Development Trailblazers Podcast! In today's episode, we're talking about how to adjust your parenting and reclaim your life as you become an empty nester.Jay Ramsden is a certified personal and executive coach and the founder of The Empty Nest Coach and This Empty Nest Life. His coaching philosophy is rooted in resilience, reinvention, and intentional living—shaped by profound life challenges and decades of experience guiding others toward renewed purpose and direction.Jay's story reflects the power of the human spirit. From losing his home to a devastating fire in 2007 to overcoming alcohol addiction during the pandemic, he has shown how adversity can become a catalyst for growth. After a distinguished 30-year career in education, he reinvented himself with a mission to help others embrace their next chapters with courage and clarity.Committed to intentional living, Jay climbed Mount Kilimanjaro as an empty nester, learning that sometimes you need to go slow to go fast—a lesson central to his coaching for empty nesters and entrepreneurs. His journey along the Camino de Santiago deepened this perspective, introducing the Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) as a powerful counter to FOMO.With a strong foundation in psychology and education, Jay brings a holistic approach to life transitions, empowering clients to shed limiting beliefs and intentionally design what comes next. Why do so many Christians feel like they’re “bad at prayer”? In this episode of the Thinking Christian Podcast, Dr. James Spencer sits down with Addison Bevere (President of Messenger International) to talk about prayer as presence, not performance—and why shame and distraction keep God’s people from the intimacy they were made for. Addison shares the origin story behind RediscoverPrayer.com and a pivotal conversation with his dad that reshaped his view of prayer: “I pray for about 15 minutes… and then I just listen.” That moment helped expose a common misconception—many people assume prayer is a spiritual performance, a transaction, or a checklist. But Scripture invites something deeper: constant prayer as constant receptivity, lived from a place of rest and God-consciousness rather than self-consciousness. James and Addison discuss how modern life trains our attention toward anxiety and control, and how rebuilding a prayerful “cadence” can reorient our entire day. Addison explains why attention is a real sacrifice, why the first hour of the morning can have a disproportionate impact, and how prayer energizes every other spiritual discipline instead of merely being one more item on the list. They also explore: Why “pray without ceasing” isn’t a burden, but an invitation to ongoing intimacy The difference between formulas and frameworks for prayer How the enemy uses shame to turn prayer into a place of disqualification How prayer changes us—even when we’re messy, distracted, or unsure what to say Why the church needs to recover the sacredness of God’s presence in community to make disciples today Addison’s newest resource, Words with God Prayer Journal, is designed as a practical framework to help people reflect, recenter, rest, receive, ask, and respond—building a life of prayer that carries into every moment. Nia Hill is an accomplished actress, entertainment executive, producer, and master of reinvention. Like many of us, her earliest attempts at reinvention happened after she started a new school in LA. She was immediately introduced to a new set of beauty and style expectations that were different from what was allowed at her prim and mandatory-uniform Catholic School. Growing up traveling between parents and cities, Los Angeles and Atlanta, provided her with the foundation to assess and adapt to new surroundings quickly. While her mother was stricter in how she allowed Nia to self-express, her father, a well-known comedy agent, was more lenient. Her early exposure to the entertainment business, coupled with music video inspiration on BET, Nia quickly carved out her own path personally and professionally.During our conversation, Nia shared that while she studied acting in college, her father dissuaded her from pursuing a career in acting. The Harlem Renaissance inspired her to move to New York during the early 2000s. After interning at the famous Apollo Theater, she embarked on a career as an executive and landed roles at Comedy Central, The Chappelle Show, and even MTV. Despite a successful career and blossoming relationship with her now-husband, Bill Burr, she was unfulfilled. She transitioned to a full-time stay-at-home mother, but still felt called towards creative work. Nia decided to invest fully in herself and her interests, only to find that she was the career of her dreams. Her current role, as a purveyor of the best in Black fine dining, is created in her image; truly original, funny, and endlessly entertaining. This message is an invitation to rediscover freedom—by living in harmony with God's original design for the world. In a culture that equates freedom with autonomy and celebrates self-definition, Genesis 2 offers a different vision—one rooted in purpose, boundaries, and beauty. Pastor David reminds us that true freedom doesn't come from rejecting God's design, but from aligning with it.In this message, we see that creation is not random space we occupy, but God's kingdom—ordered, intentional, and alive with both spiritual and material realities. We were made to walk with God, to live with purpose, and to thrive within the boundaries He created for our flourishing. This message explores three foundational questions from Genesis 2:• What is the world?• How does the world work?• What is the world made of?It also revisits the four anchor truths introduced in Genesis 1:• God is the Source• God is Good• God is Worthy of Worship• God Can Be KnownYou were made to belong—to walk in God's presence, live with His purpose, and be shaped by His Spirit.

This message is a powerful invitation to return to the source—to see your life through the lens of the story God has been telling since the beginning. From competing cultural narratives to watered-down identities, we're surrounded by stories that shrink our imagination. But in Genesis, we discover a better one. Pastor David reminds us that our lives aren't defined by our past, abilities, or circumstances—but by the power and character of the God who made us.This message walks through Genesis 1 and invites us to anchor our lives in four core truths:• God is the Source• God is Good• God is Worthy of Worship• God Can Be KnownYou weren't made to drift. You were made to belong—to know God, reflect His image, and live a story rooted in meaning, beauty, and truth.

This Christmas, we're delighted to bring back one of our most beloved conversations with Enneagram Three, pastor, and author AJ Sherrill. In this replay, AJ joins me to revisit the Nativity story—not as the sentimental tale we often breeze past each year, but as a rich, multilayered narrative pulsing with mystery, courage, vulnerability, and divine surprise. AJ shares his own journey into spiritual direction, what it's teaching him about listening, presence, and compassion, and how the Enneagram continues to shape his inner world. We explore why the season invites us to slow down, pay attention, and resist the frantic pace that so easily numbs our capacity for wonder. Together, we dig beneath the familiar Christmas imagery to uncover the often-misunderstood characters who surround the manger—the homeowner who offered radical hospitality, Zechariah rediscovering awe through silence, and even Herod, whose shadow side has more to teach us than we might expect. Their stories echo our own desires, fears, and growth edges in striking ways. We also have some fun speculating about the Enneagram archetypes present in the Christmas narrative—Mary, Joseph, John the Baptist, and others—and how their unique postures toward God can inspire our own transformation. This episode is thoughtful, illuminating, and sprinkled with the kind of laughter and honesty that always seems to show up when AJ is with us. A perfect listen for Christmas Day. Settle in, take a breath, and join us as we rediscover the story beneath the story—and the God who meets us there.

Today, host Mardi Winder has a fun and uplifting chat with Jenny Elinora, a creative empowerment coach and musician whose work centers on supporting women over 50 as they rediscover their voices and creative aspirations. Jenny shares her personal story of reclaiming creativity late in life, describing how her own divorce became a turning point that led her to publicly embrace singing, songwriting, and the arts for the first time at age thirty-three. She explains how societal expectations and cultural messages often stifle creativity, especially for women, but emphasizes that the impulse to create is innate and can manifest in many forms beyond the traditional arts, whether in entrepreneurship, caregiving, or daily living.Throughout their exchange, Mardi and Jenny touch on the importance of play, joy, and curiosity as doorways to reconnecting with one's sense of self after significant life shifts, such as divorce. Jenny encourages listeners to believe in their own creativity and provides practical suggestions for gently reawakening creative energies, starting with small, playful experiences each day. She also candidly discusses the effects that nurturing creativity can have, including greater confidence, renewed focus, and, in some cases, bold life changes. The episode concludes with Jenny Elinora offering a resource, a collection of creative sound meditations, for listeners who are interested in taking their first steps toward a more expressive and fulfilling life. It is an engaging and supportive conversation, filled with practical encouragement for anyone seeking to reconnect with their creative spark during or after divorce.About the Guest:Jenny Elinora is a creativity empowerment coach and musician dedicated to helping women over 50 rediscover their voices and live their creative dreams. With decades of performance experience and a deep understanding of how trauma impacts creativity, Jenny's mission is to inspire women to boldly reclaim their creative power. Her own journey reflects the challenges and triumphs of the women she helps. Silenced by early criticism and life's traumas, Jenny didn't find her voice until age 33 and only released her first solo project at 50. Along the way, she's written, performed, recorded and produced 30+ original songs, and earned recognition such as Vermont's Tammie Award for Best Rock Album. Through her holistic approach— somatic practices, sound healing, community support and creative coaching— Jenny has helped 100+ women overcome self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and creative stagnation to help them reconnect with their authentic self and share their brilliance with the world. For Jenny's gift: https://meditation.growyourwholevoice.comTo connect with Jenny:Website: https://growyourwholevoice.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jelinora Instagram: https://www.intagram.com/yourcreativewholevoice LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/projectjelinoraAbout the Host: Mardi Winder is an ICF and BCC Executive and Leadership Coach, Certified Divorce Transition Coach, Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS®) and a Credentialed Distinguished Mediator in Texas. Christmas is meant to be a season of joy—but for many of us, it becomes a whirlwind of overspending, overcommitting, and feeling overwhelmed. The good news? It doesn't have to be that way. With a bit of planning and the right perspective, you can slow down, simplify, and savor what truly matters.Today, Crystal Payne—creator of MoneySavingMom.com—shared practical ways to simplify Christmas while keeping your heart centered on Christ. Here's a look at her best advice for making this season more peaceful, meaningful, and budget-friendly.Rediscover the Meaning of ChristmasBefore diving into logistics or budgeting, Crystal encourages families to anchor the season in what matters most.1. Practice Daily Advent ReflectionsHer family uses Ann Voskamp's Advent book, complete with ornaments and daily devotionals. The readings are short, kid-friendly, and a gentle, daily reminder of the story at the heart of Christmas.2. Create a Family Giving ProjectEvery December, Crystal's children choose a giving project—something meaningful to them—and the whole family contributes. The kids even make donation boxes and help gather change throughout the month. It's a hands-on way to practice generosity and keep the focus on others.Simplify Your Gift ListFor many people, gift-giving is the biggest stressor in December.Crystal recommends asking yourself:Who do I feel I should buy for?Who do I want to buy for? What budget do I realistically have?If your list and budget don't match, consider simplifying:Family gifts instead of individual giftsExperience gifts rather than itemsHomemade or low-cost gifts, especially for people who “have everything”Crystal's free Christmas guide at MoneySavingMom.com includes 15 simple DIY gift ideas—from movie-night boxes to Sharpie-designed mugs to homemade baked goods.Keep Spending in CheckOverspending is easy at Christmas—but planning helps.Save Throughout the YearIt's too late for this season, but Crystal encourages starting a Christmas sinking fund in January. A little each month makes December much lighter.Use Gift Cards as Your BudgetIf you shop online, buying prepaid gift cards (or using ones earned through surveys or reward apps) helps you avoid overspending. When the card is empty, the shopping is done.If money is tight this year, you still have wonderful options:Homemade food gifts: cookie dough, loaves of bread, granola, sweet breadsExperience gifts: monthly treats, babysitting, laundry help, home-cooked mealsSentimental gifts: photo books, recipe collections, handwritten lettersThese gifts often mean more than store-bought items because they're personal, thoughtful, and memorable.Make Holiday Cooking EasierFood prep can dominate December, but Crystal suggests planning ahead:Make a list of everything you hope to cookShop ahead of timePrep and freeze items like cookie dough, rolls, sweet breads, or dessertsTake shortcuts when needed—premade dough or bread can be inexpensive and time-savingA few hours of prep can give you more space for the moments that matter.Plan Meaningful Family Time (Without Overfilling Your Calendar)Crystal offers several delightful ideas to create memories without adding stress.1. Make a December Bucket ListEach family member chooses one or two special activities. That's it. This keeps the schedule joyful rather than jam-packed—and ensures you're doing what everyone actually values.2. Wrap and Read Christmas BooksWrap books you already own and open one each day in December. Kids love the anticipation, and it becomes a shared daily moment.3. Celebrate Early as a FamilyBecause they travel to visit extended family, Crystal's family sets aside a full “Christmas Day” together the week before. It allows them to savor time at home without rushing through traditions.Stay Organized and Reduce StressCrystal's top principle: Ask, “How can I make this easier?”A few of her go-to strategies:Write everything down – brain dump into Google Calendar so it's not “living in your head.”Time-block your to-dos – small chunks of planned tasks prevent last-minute chaos.Share the workload – say “yes” when someone offers help. Ask guests to bring a dish. Let kids take part in preparations.Simplifying isn't just about doing less—it's about doing what matters most with more peace.Crystal's brand-new resource includes:15 DIY gift ideasFood gifts, homemade gifts, and simple creative optionsIdeas to simplify and save money this ChristmasYou can download it for free at MoneySavingMom.com.A Final WordCrystal's wisdom reminds us that Christmas doesn't need to be hectic or expensive to be meaningful.
