It is 2016, Karl Isenberg is on the center stage, "Container Orchestration Wars," he said. The stage was set for the orchestration race. Armed to the teeth, the warriors at this time were DCOS Mesos, Kubernetes, Nomad, and Docker Swarm, among others. Behind each technology, a company. Google, Hashicorp, Docker inc, and Apache. Each one is willing to win the day and add a feather in their cap. The global application container market was expected to grow from 1.2 billion USD in 2018 to 4.98 billion USD by 2023, at a compound annual growth rate of 32.9% during the forecast period. Which orchestration system will win the war? Who's going to have the lion's share? Will the winner take all? Or will there be multiple winners? It is all obvious now, Elvis has left the building, and some technologies weren't. Today, you will get your free ticket to travel back to the '50s, to discover the first containers, then go back to the '70s, and so on until the present day. We are going to go through the interesting history of containerization and discover how it has evolved. We will talk about the container orchestration systems. Docker and the problems it solved. We are going to understand why Docker and containers became a big deal and finally, we'll wrap up with the history of Kubernetes. On today’s podcast, Justin Cormack discusses how the modern operating system is being decomposed with toolkits and libraries such as LinuxKit, eBPF, XDP, and what the kernel space service mesh Cilium is doing. Wes Reisz and Justin Cormack also discuss how Cilium differs from service meshes like an Istio, Linkerd2 (previously Conduit), or Envoy. Justin is a systems engineer at Docker. He previously was working with unikernels at Unikernel Systems in Cambridge before being acquired by Docker. (edited) *Key Takeaways:* * LinuxKit is an appliance way of thinking about your operating system and is gaining adoption. There are contributions now from Oracle, Cloudflare, Intel, etc. Docker has seen interesting use cases such as customers running LinuxKit on large cloud providers directly on bare metal (more on this coming soon). * The operating system of today is really unchanged since the Sun workstation of the 90’s. Yet everything else about software has really changed such as automation, build pipelines, and delivery. * XDP (eXpress Data Path) is a packet processing layer for Linux that lets you run fast in kernel compiled safe program in kernel called eBPF. It’s used for things like packet filtering and encapsulation/decapsulation. * Cilium is an in-kernel, high performance service mesh that leverages eBPF. Cilium is very good at layer 4 processing, but doesn’t really do the layer 7 things that some of the other services meshes can offer (such as proxying http/1 to http/2)

Cloud Rules Everything Around Me As summarized by Derrick (http://news.architecht.io/issues/architecht-daily-it-s-earnings-and-ipo-season-for-cloud-and-cloudera-55782) (via CNBC (http://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/27/microsoft-azure-growing-faster-than-aws-google-cloud-behind.html): AWS brought in $3.66 billion in revenue, which was up 42 percent from last year. However, year-over-year growth dropped from last year’s first quarter. Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” unit, which includes Azure, grew 11 percent, to $6.8 billion. Microsoft doesn’t break out Azure revenue specifically, but said Azure saw a 93 percent increase in revenue over last year. Google Cloud is buried somewhere in “Other Bets” on Alphabet earnings, a segment that grew 50 percent to $3.1 billion. What’s the Halo Effect on this? It’s easy to blame the big vendors for shying away from public cloud but it was some scary shit, business-case wise, back in 2008.
