For last 100 years, the neighborhood of Harlem in New York City has stood as the capital of Black America and the capital of the global African diaspora. Yet Harlem is so big and so varied that it contains smaller sections with distinct identities and histories of their own. Davida Siwisa James explores two parts of Harlem in her book Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill: Alexander Hamilton's Old Harlem Neighborhood Through the Centuries, published by the Empire State Editions imprint of Fordham University Press. Exploring four centuries of life in a part of upper Manhattan that stretches from 135th Street to 165th Street and from Edgecombe Avenue to the Hudson River, James looks at the encounters between the Lenape and Dutch settlers, the rural village that was Harlem, and the Harlem Renaissance luminaries who lived in Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill. James blends the personal and the historical to illuminate great events, fascinating people, and amazing architecture. In a time when Harlem is going through great demographic and cultural changes, she explores both the long history of Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill and their significance for the history Black America. This week we welcome back friend of the pod, writer, creator all round wonderful man James Hamilton to get stuck into The Addams Family. Before we get into the joy of this macabre masterpiece James very kindly talks us through his writing process and a little of why the comedic horror genre has always fascinated him and the role the Addams family played in his understanding of how comedy can beautifully interact with discussions around mortality, the surreal and the supernatural. We have a great discussion about what is really at the heart of the film - why is it that a family that seems to be so at odds with the world around them actually manage to have such a tender and loving relationship with one another. What are the key markers of a truly beautiful family unit? And what is the key message at the heart of the film? There's also time to get stuck into the gothic aesthetic as well as the cultural significance that the Addams Family had now spawning new series like Wednesday. If you'd like to check out more of James' work have a peek at his brilliant series 'Murder for Dummies' on the Casual Violence YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/@CasualViolence - thanks so much for joining us James! We examine perhaps the most important piece of the complex puzzle of the Hartman case: what Sophie wrote about it in her journals. We're joined by Dr. James Hamilton, an MBP expert with a PhD in clinical psychology, to walk us through some of Sophie's most chilling journal entries collected in the case files. We also look at Sophie's disturbing internet search history during the time of C's alleged Central precocious puberty (CPP) diagnosis. After being separated from Sophie, M and C are placed with Sophie's mom and sister. Detective Lee discusses the problems that arise when placing children with people that are most likely going to side with the perpetrator. In April of 2022, C and M are returned to Sophie and criminal charges are subsequently dropped. Andrea offers a key insight into how this might have happened by revealing a surprising member of Sophie's legal team: her sister, Megan Carter. *** Links and Resources: Dr. James Hamilton: https://www.munchausensupport.com/who-we-are/ Check out Olivia LaVoice's podcast, The Bakersfield Three: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/867-the-bakersfield-three-128074552/ Learn more about our featured non-profit and mutual aid organizations: https://www.nobodyshouldbelieveme.com/nsbm-supports/ Check out You Probably Think This Story's About You: https://brittaniard.com/podcast Click here to view our sponsors. This week Jeff and Dave pick up an article (linked below) from Ernest Blum in the American Scholar (September 2008) on the once hugely popular (and now wholly neglected) interlinear method of language learning. 19th century businessman and aspiring pedagogue James Hamilton (1769–1831) found the Greek and Latin instruction of his time hopelessly slow and backward: "How . . . is it possible that a child should be chained to the oar, seven, eight, or ten of the best years of his life, to get a language or two, which, I think, might be had at a great deal cheaper rate of pains and time, and be learned almost in playing?" In response, Jimbo developed a system of fitting the translation, in this case English, directly below the line, which privileged reading above all other forms of study as the sole and proper method of learning. Jim made some extravagant claims about the Hamiltonian method's prospects for success: "Reading is the only real, the only effectual source of instruction. It is the pure spring of nine-tenths of our intellectual enjoyments. . . . Neither should it be sacrificed to grammar or composition, nor to getting by heart any thing whatever, because these are utterly unobtainable before we have read a great deal.” But is he right? What about spoken language acquisition? What about images? Games? And what about Zipf's law? The guys examine the article and Blum's claims in light of their own language acquisition and instruction, comparing the Hamiltonian system to Loebs, the finer elements of Greek and Latin syntax, and what'er else strikes their fancy. Be sure to tune in for this and more, especially the secret code word to win a premium Ratio 4 coffee maker. https://theamericanscholar.org/the-new-old-way-of-learning-languages/
To kick off Season Five of the Marcus Oldham College AgTalk Podcast, I sat down with James Hamilton from Cultivate Advisory to discuss one of the most critical conversations any farming family, or any family with a business, will ever have: succession planning. James is not only an experienced family succession planning facilitator but also a farmer with over 25 years of hands-on experience. He operates a farming enterprise in Narromine, central New South Wales, alongside his wife, Amanda. Together, they have raised their three daughters on the family farm, including Annabelle, a 2023 graduate of Marcus Oldham College with a Bachelor of Business (Agribusiness). Having successfully navigated the succession process within his own family farm, James launched Cultivate Advisory in 2013. Through his business, he specialises in helping families and businesses across Australia create tailored succession plans that ensure smooth transitions of management and assets from one generation to the next. His approach focuses on open communication, practical strategies, and a deep understanding of the emotional and professional complexities involved. If you're ready to start the conversation about succession planning or wondering where to even start, this episode is packed with insights, practical advice, and real-life examples from James's years of experience. Do you know who you are and why you do what you do?Knowing oneself is essential for protectors, especially as they transition from military or law enforcement to the private security sector. Many professionals might believe they understand their identity, yet in this episode, we discuss how introspection can make you a better protector. This week, we're joined by James Hamilton, founder of the Hamilton Security Group, where we explore:Why is it important to know yourself as a person when entering and operating in protection? What factors from your past do you need to acknowledge and understand to be an effective protector?Do those who have not come from the services have an advantage or a different method of 'knowing' themselves?Does this methodology help protectors plug skills gaps?Do you need to truly understand protector colleagues as they understand themselves for operational success?About James:LinkedInMore about the Circuit:The Circuit Magazine is written and produced by volunteers, most of who are operationally active, working full time in the security industry. For more than 40 years, the breathtaking pictures of photographer James Hamilton have chronicled New York City and America (and a couple of war zones), and now the amazing new documentary UNCROPPED (Greenwich Entertainment) by director D.W. Young has launched a rediscovery of James Hamilton's work, life & times. D.W. rejoins the show to talk about how James' career at the NY Herald, Village Voice, and NY Observer opened the door to a a bigger story about NYC, arts/culture and media, how NYC has changed and how the culture adapts, and how young viewers react upon learning about the city's vibrant newspaper & alt-weekly scene that preceded the internet. We get into the difference between empathy & formality in photography, how after D.W.'s previous movie (The Booksellers) he really didn't want to make another NYC film but wound up making the MOST, James' shift from film to digital (and why some of UNCROPPED is shot on film), why sit-down interviews in documentaries get a bad rap but why they can be so valuable, and how Wes Anderson ended up being interviewed in the movie in a largely empty room. Plus we discuss D.W.'s first post-lockdown movie-theater viewings, the relief of making a short narrative film (Dancing on the Silk Razor) in the midst of making Uncropped, what he learned from making The Booksellers (and what he had to unlearn), why it's a travesty that the Village Voice archives aren't digitized, and a lot more.
