Gothenburg's finest export of darkness, Evergrey, enters a new chapter in the band's history with their thirteenth studio album and Napalm Records debut, A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament), released on May 20, 2022. In this conversation we discuss the album, working with Avatarium's guitar titan and fellow Swede Marcus Jidell, as well as Tom's daily battle to play the guitar due to an injury.
The live music experience has been on a standstill for the majority of 2020 due to a pandemic – Swedish doom metallers Avatarium are making sure they can still give that experience to the fans in any given fashion. Guitarist and producer extraordinaire from the band Marcus Jidell joins us to talk about the newest live album they have just dropped, titled “An Evening With Avatarium”. Marcus has taken in so much experience throughout his music-storied career, that releasing a live album provides another exquisite chapter in his catalog. The concert they have recorded was executed to perfection before Covid ever hit, so the timing was impeccable. Even though this is a live album, it also serves as a snapshot of where he is at a certain time in his life, for better or worse that allows him a chance to grow as an individual and as an artist. Tune in to this episode now and make to buy/stream Avatarium's newest live epic, “An Evening With Avatarium” out now on Nuclear Blast Records.

+++ The concert film of the year +++ Marcus Jidell on the rather coincidental production of the first AVATARIUM DVD +++ Location from the 19th century +++ Metamorphosis into a "Dark Gospel" bandThis time it's all about AVATARIUM from Stockholm. Ever since her first self-titled album in 2013, the magical voice of front woman Jennie-Ann Smith has enchanted me. From my point of view, the band has made an incredible metamorphosis over a total of four albums and let more and more warm rays of sunshine into the compositions of the deep, heavy dark, cold sounds of the Black Sabbath-type. Just have a look at all the acoustic songs on the AVATARIUM YouTube channel, you will be very surprised.Their latest album "The Fire I Long For" was released last November, with which the band opened up a completely new niche, which they call "Dark Gospel". If you want to know more about this, I should watch the explainatory video for the song "Rubicon", which went online for a few days.2020 could have been the year of AVATARIUM, two warm-up shows were played in Sweden and then an extensive live implementation with the highlights Wacken and Summer Breeze, to name just a few, should follow. But these plans were also lost in the wake of the pandemic.Almost by chance, one of the first two shows in Stockholm was recorded with cameras. I was allowed to watch this video completely and can tell you that the concert is an absolute eye-catcher due to the historical location from the 19th century. For over 90 minutes a dark Doom thunderstorm breaks loose, in extreme contrast with almost folk-like ballads, soulful bluesy guitar solos, a lot of 70s Hammond organ and above all this magical voice of Jennie-Ann Smith. And it is exactly this experience that rings your doorbell now, because the "Concert Film of the Year" for me is available as a video download. You can secure this show here for 10 euros. You even get a finished cover to print out so that you can get a DVD of it can burn, quasi an official bootlegBut to build up the tension a bit, let's first hear what AVATARIUM mastermind Marcus Jidell told me about this project. Lean back.THE BLOG OF ROCK is your hard rock & heavy metal podcast music magazine. THE BLOG OF ROCK ist Dein Hardrock & Heavy Metal Podcast Musik Magazin. "For several years, the Swede fought with health problems and was plagued by stress-related fatigue syndrome after decades in the music business in which he sustainably shaped the genre of Doom metal with CANDLEMASS and walked modern paths with AVATARIUM. But while he was barely able to get up from his couch anymore, stress-ridden and tired, he used this paralyzing emptiness to pick up his old acoustic guitar and compose the very first melodies of his new brainchild THE DOOMSDAY KINGDOM. Soon, the Doomfather’s kingdom started to see the light of day and he found new comrades-in-arms with WOLF-singer Niklas Stålvind, Andreas „Habo“ Johansson and his AVATARIUM-colleague Marcus Jidell. Their journey led them through fields of classical doom metal, but what made their sound so special was the pinch of New Way Of British Heavy Metal that they added to their leaden style. In combination withStålvind’s haunting vocals, THE DOOMSDAY KINGDOM created an all-absorbing vortex." Ben talked with Leif Edling about why he started a new band, the joys of making music and his feelings leading up to his first show in three years. Aired 6th April 2017.
