Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!A special episode today to look at the huge amount of people who've recently died. Obviously, Ozzy Osbourne is the most well-known, but there's gonna be a queue a mile long at the Pearly Gates as they try to process everyone! Let's look at some highlights, such as Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, Aussie Col Joye, Hulk Hogan, David Johansen and Golden Earring's George Kooymans. We're also going to look at some of the 304 covers of Dylan's song, “Knockin' on Heaven's Door” - some great, some not so much! Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is, inevitably, the self-titled debut, “Black Sabbath”. We'll look at the impact of this album which, although not the band's best, is credited with launching Heavy Metal itself! Stephen Colbert recently became our favourite US night-time TV host when he had Weird Al Yankovic as a guest to celebrate the “Kiss-Cam” scandal. Weird Al said “We're gonna do some Coldplay.” When Colbert asked if he had a funny parody, Al said, “No. I can't think of anything funnier than Coldplay.” References: Colbert, Weird Al Yankovic, Coldplay, “Kiss Cam”, Trump, Michael Flatley, Lord of the Dance, Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, “Master of the Macabre”, Mario Bava, Warren Zevon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Guns'n'Roses, Eric Clapton, Roger McGuinn, Television, Sisters of Mercy, Jerry Garcia, Bryan Ferry, Dave Stewart, Cold Chisel, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Ozzy Osbourne, Brian Wilson , Sly Stone, Sly and the Family Stone, Col Joye, Hulk Hogan, David Lynn Thomas, James Baker, Paul Buckler, Paul Weller, The Jam, Rick Derringer, Edgar and Johnny Winter, Arthur Stern, "Cry Me a River", George Kooymans, Golden Earring, Chuck Mangione, Alf Clausen, The Simpsons, Tom Lehrer, David Johansen, New York Dolls, Bobby Sherman Links PlaylistMichael Flatley Ozzy - Reality TV icon. Stewart, Rastislav and Ken return for Off the Record, and speak on the memory of Ozzy Osbourne. Ken begins with a glowing review of 2020's Rockfield: the Studio on the Farm; Ozzy, Tony Iommi and many others were interviewed for this documentary on the studio built by Charles and Kingsley Ward. The Welsh farming brothers provided the backdrop for Black Sabbath and other UK bands to create enduring pop and rock classics, and have weathered industry changes to continue operating.Stewart continues with a review of the 2023 sci fi thriller Simulant, a low budget affair that nevertheless utilized its actors and story to impress Stewart; he favourably compares this film to Blade Runner. Robbie Amell, Jordana Brewster, Simu Liu and Sam Worthington headline.Rastislav then brings more UK praise with his review of the Ricky Gervais series After Life (2019-2022). He enjoyed Gervais' abrasive, uncompromising humour and observations of human nature.Moving to lesser picks, Ken reviews an early Mike Flanagan effort called Absentia (2011). While he found value in the character development between actors Katie Parker and Courtney Bell, he feels the low budget prevented Flanagan from creating a film with the intensity of his later releases.Stewart then expands on his Dead Like Me series review to administer last rites to its 2009 sequel movie Life After Death. Actors Ellen Muth and Callum Blue couldn't enliven this finale to Stewart's satisfaction.Rastislav concludes with his analysis of the recent Netflix sensation You (2018-2025), starring Penn Badgley, Victoria Pedretti and others. He felt the change in story backdrops kept the series from being consistently entertaining. And if that wasn't enough, Twisted Metal Season 2 leaves us with a bitter taste in Stewart's mouth. Chaz & Schatz welcome Vince Tricarico & Burke Hunn of The Rush Experience — a RUSH tribute trio so faithful it could fool Lorne into coming out of retirement and rigging up the drums, and trick Howard into running the light show. Vince found RUSH after Bonham's passing, adopted Zeppelin & Rush as his life's soundtrack, fell into the tribute scene, and spent years searching for the perfect trio. Burke was a Zeppelin/Aerosmith guy until a friend dropped the RUSH bomb, leading him straight to a Hemispheres vinyl and a lifelong tone-chase. Together with bassist/keyboardist Dave Kidd, they recreate every era of RUSH — from the first record to the last — with scary accuracy, enthusiasm, and musicianship that lets you relive it all again. They swap stories about monster drum rigs, Alex Lifeson guitar wizardry, load-in nightmares, backstage hangs with Jack Secret, and setlist alchemy that balances fan favorites with deep cuts. On this special episode of the Hair Metal Podcast we discuss 'Black Sabbath: Back To The Beginning' Benefit Concert. Back to the Beginning was a benefit concert by the English rock band Black Sabbath, with a number of supporting artists. It took place on July 5th, 2025 at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, England, very near where the band was formed in 1968. The event concluded with the final live performances of both the band and lead singer Ozzy Osbourne; it also marked the first time since 2005 that the original line-up of the band (Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward) had performed together live. Osbourne, no longer able to walk due to advanced Parkinson's disease, sang while seated on a throne. The widely-lauded concert was streamed worldwide via pay per view with a broadcast delay. It featured an all-star lineup of supporting acts, including two supergroups of musicians serving as the house band. Proceeds from the event totaled £140 million, and will be donated to Acorns Children's Hospice, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Cure Parkinson's. Black Sabbath is widely regarded as a foundational band for heavy metal, with their influence extending to various subgenres. Their impact is undeniable, shaping the sound and lyrical themes of countless bands across generations, from the 70s through to current day modern acts. Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingIn this episode, Matt Fanslow reflects on the recent passings of two cultural icons—Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan—and draws parallels between their careers and the automotive aftermarket industry. Both figures revolutionized their respective fields (music and professional wrestling) through innovation, perseverance, and an unparalleled connection with their audiences. Matt explores what we can learn from their legacies, including the importance of passion, reinvention, and recognizing opportunities outside our comfort zones.Key Discussion Points1. Ozzy Osbourne: The Accidental Pioneer of Heavy MetalOzzy's final performance at the Power Trip festival, where he performed in immense pain, skipping pain meds to stay present. How Black Sabbath (with guitarist Tony Iommi) accidentally created metal by downtuning guitars after a workplace injury. The importance of appreciating contributions even if you're not a die-hard fan.The value of knowing how you've impacted others (like Ozzy hearing tributes before his passing).2. Hulk Hogan: The Man Who Made Wrestling MainstreamHogan's physical sacrifices (spinal damage from his signature leg drop) and how wrestling is a work but not fake. His ability to connect with audiences in ways no wrestler had before—comparable to Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. How Hogan's heel turn (becoming a villain with the NWO) revitalized wrestling during a slump. The role of timing, charisma, and reinvention in long-term success.3. Lessons for the Automotive AftermarketPassion & Perseverance: Like Ozzy and Hogan, success in the aftermarket requires dedication and pushing through challenges.Reinvention: Hogan's shift from hero to villain kept him relevant—how can shops adapt to stay ahead?Breaking Out of Comfort Zones: Both Ozzy and Hogan expanded beyond their core careers (reality TV, movies). How can shops engage in community work, sponsorships, or other visibility-boosting activities?Continuous Improvement: Getting 1% better every day compounds into major growth over time.4. Personal Reflections & Industry ParallelsMatt's admiration for educators like Paul Danner, who revolutionized training accessibility. The importance of finding the right shop culture for growth (just as Hogan thrived under Vince McMahon's WWE expansion). Why awareness of opportunities—both inside and outside the industry—is crucial.Notable Quotes"Ozzy and Hogan didn't just succeed in their fields—they redefined them. That's the kind of impact we should strive for in the aftermarket.""Wrestling isn't fake; it's a performance with real consequences. Same goes for our work—every repair matters.""If you improve by just 0.33% every day, you'll be 100% better in a year. Small steps lead to big changes."While Ozzy and Hogan came from entirely different worlds, their stories remind us that innovation, adaptability, and connection are universal keys to success. Whether you're a technician, shop owner, or industry educator, there's always room to grow—and maybe even revolutionize your corner of the aftermarket. Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech TrainingNAPA Autotech's team of ASE Master Certified Instructors are conducting over 1,200 classes covering 28 automotive topics. On this week's show, we catch up on a smokin' boatload o' new-ish singles and pour one out for the late Ozzy Osbourne. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
Black Sabbath are solely responsible for conjuring the diabolical power of heavy metal. When guitarist Tony Iommi lost his fingertips as a teenager, he turned to a less painful style of playing— a style that produced a new, genre-defining type of gloom and heaviness. The band climbed through the seven circles of British podunk hell to international rock star success, but the lore of their dark imagery compelled the freaks to flood out of the woodwork and to their shows. Despite composing songs that warned against the evils of the occult, Black Sabbath attracted legions of devil worshippers, occultists and 1970s freak-flag-flying practitioners of the dark arts. Kids went mad for their metal. Critics hated it. And much to the band's dismay, Satanists found their battle cry in the heavy gloom that Black Sabbath had awakened. And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world. John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath. Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Considered one of (if not THE) most influential bands in the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath also consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, releasing a string of classic albums like Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ectasy (1976), Never Say Die (1978) before Ozzy launched a fruitful solo career. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. Osbourne remained at the forefront of pop culture through his popular Ozzfest tours and his unlikely stint as a lovable TV Dad on the reality show The Osbournes. Learn more about your ad choices. We honor the work of Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away this week at age 76. Andrew and Dominique give Ozzy his flowers for being a much greater singer, performer and ambassador for rock and heavy metal music than people realize. We talk about the grim circumstances that led to Ozzy co-founding Black Sabbath with Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, and we consider how Satanic panic unwittingly fueled the band's rise in the ‘70s. We stop down on some highlights from Ozzy's incredible solo career and consider how music history would have been different had his widow and longtime manager Sharon Osbourne not entered the picture. Also, we consider how perfectly Ozzy exited, from his revelatory final performance in Birmingham, raising $200 million for charity, and seeing all of his friends one last time.Tell us about your first listen @AtFirstListenpodcast on Instagram!Subscribe so you don't miss an episode!(Episode 38.)
From The Desk of Geddy Lee...Ozzy Osbourne: Fearless. One of a kind. Played by no one's rules. “I remember listening to the first Sabbath album when it came out and thinking how ‘effin' heavy' Tony Iommi's guitar sounded,” said Geddy Lee. “Ozzy and his bandmates were at the forefront of that genre, that brand of Metal, and Ozzy was an intensely loved, one of a kind performer. We never got to play on the same bill with Black Sabbath, and in fact we only ever did two gigs with Ozzy, at the Texxas Jam at the Cotton Bowl in June of 1984 (poster attached) and the other at the Astrodome.Rush recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales at the same time in the late 70's and I recall Ozzy poking his head in the control room to ask if he could “borrow” some Hashish from Neil! For years afterwards, Neil relished telling the story of how “Ozzy owes me some hash”
Here's a punchy and fitting episode description for your flash cast:Flash Cast: The Stories & Music of Ozzy OsbourneIn this special flash cast memorial, we pay tribute to the legendary Ozzy Osbourne—the Prince of Darkness whose music, antics, and larger-than-life persona defined generations of rock fans. Gaspar from The Hoodrat Recap joins us to share his memories of seeing Ozzy live at his very first “grown up” concert and how it shaped his love of music. Then Spunky tries to lighten the mood by imagining what would happen if the infamous “Coldplay incident” went down at a classic rock show. Would Ozzy have handled it the same way? Or would Tony Iommi's guitar have settled the score? On this episode of Johnny Beane TV, we pay tribute to the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, who has passed away at the age of 76. “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” his family said in a statement. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.” No cause of death was given, though last few years leading up to his passing had been a rough ride for Ozzy. He was forced to postpone his “No More Tours 2” farewell tour, first due to a bout with pneumonia, then due to a serious fall while at home in Los Angeles. In early 2020, he went public with Parkinson's disease, just before the pandemic hit. Despite his ailments, Osbourne mustered the strength to play one final concert alongside his Black Sabbath bandmates earlier this month on July 5th in his hometown of Birmingham, England. Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3rd, 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy sought to become a singer in a rock band after becoming smitten by The Beatles. By the end of the ‘60s, he had formed Black Sabbath (originally named Earth), rounding out a lineup that also included guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. Welcome to Big Pile of Black Sabbath, a tribute to the patriarchs of heavy metal. Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Tony Iommi played their final show together last week and it did not disappoint. From the special guest surprises, to Sabbath's last performance, I was happy to be a fan. TOOL performed Hand of Doom earlier in the day. To hear Danny Carey blast a Sabbath song was wicked hot. Jason Momoa led a mosh pit. I've always loved Iommi, but Geezer Butler really cracked me with that last performance.I've never heard or imagined War Pigs played like that. Unbelievable. The underground icing on the cake in this episode was me finding a $100 plus record in a $2 crate and immediately knowing it shouldn't have been in there. Millions of things I still don't know in this realm, but I'm getting stronger like Charlie in the bush. I hope someone out there enjoyed it, thank you for being here. Until next week.. It took place on 5 July 2025 at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, England, very near where the band was formed in 1968. The event concluded with the final live performances of both the band and lead singer Ozzy Osbourne; it also marked the first time since 2005 that the original line-up of the band (Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward) had performed together live. What happens when lifelong fandom meets musical opportunity? Matt Hughes knows firsthand. Having grown up purchasing Black Sabbath albums, Matt eventually found himself trading guitar solos with Tony Iommi and jamming alongside Bill Ward through Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp experiences that transformed his relationship with music. The most remarkable chapters of Matt's story revolve around Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, which he describes as "life-changing." Through this innovative program, musicians of all skill levels get to perform with rock legends. For Matt, this meant playing Hendrix's "Hey Joe" with Bill Ward and Lita Ford, and later receiving "the nod" from Tony Iommi to take a guitar solo during Black Sabbath's "Into the Void." These surreal moments—capped by Iommi gifting him a guitar pick—illustrate how the boundaries between fan and musician can beautifully blur.As we anticipate Black Sabbath and Ozzy's final performance together in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, Matt's experiences offer a unique perspective on music's power to create meaningful connections across decades. His story reminds us that passion, persistence, and a willingness to participate can transform our relationship with the music and artists we love.We also look back at the Billboard Hot 100 Chart from July 13, 1985. Songs included are Dire Straits "Money for Nothing" and Dead or Alive "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)." What made #1? K.K. Downing celebrates his new version of Judas Priest's "Never Satisfied" and looks back on Priest's early days with Black Sabbath.
“If they're not fat, they're soft…” Think back to The Sunset Strip and the emerging metal scene of the early 80's, full of sleaze, shred, and riffs, long before the emergence of the “serious glam” and “serious thrash” of the mid to late 80's. METAL HEALTH and OUT OF THE CELLAR, released in 1983 and 1984, by QUIET RIOT and RATT (respectively) both preceded the hair metal movement of the late 80's and ironically (to a great extent) helped to define it. While both METAL HEALTH and OUT OF THE CELLAR were “more metal than we thought”, each album has its share of pros and cons, with some tracks drowning in 80's nostalgia that sound a bit dated by today's standards, and others possessing a far more timeless heavy metal quality that still holds up and sounds awesome even today. It's time to “purse the lips up a little bit” and grab the attention of those who smell like “Aqua Net and Marlboros” that are wearing the “bustiers and leopard skin spandex” who just want to “use the bathroom”. Discover the shared traits which “vegans and wizards” have in common, find out why squirrels are “deadass” the dumbest creatures on earth and why some birds are “a little bit touched”, go ahead and submit your early enrollment for “Juilliard Speech School” and get ready to do some “edging” to try and replicate “the weird feeling” you had when you were 10 when you JOIN US for the SUNSET STRIP EDITION of our HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATHMATCH featuring 2 of the greatest debut albums in the history of early 80's metal, METAL HEALTH by QUIET RIOT and OUT OF THE CELLAR by RATT.
