Derek Shulman was at the heart of two great transformations – Simon Dupree & the Big Sound switching to psychedelia, and then sensing the prog-rock trade winds and becoming Gentle Giant. Début des années 2000, Black Sabbath profite de sa résurrection live pour sillonner les USA lors de différentes Ozzfest. Pourtant, côté nouvel album, c'est le calme plat. Angus Clark is an expert of all things Tony Iommi, and he has the gear to prove it! The Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Rock of Ages guitarist shows us a couple sweet Iommi tribute SGs as he walks us through Black Sabbath's discography, breaking down Iommi's vocabulary, sound, and gear, and how Iommi created some of the most identifiable riffs in all of rock. Angus is plugged in and ready to go, so we get to hear some of the moves in action—including how loose, light gauge strings create the signature Sabbath sound, how it encouraged some parts of Iommi's lead moves.Today's episode brought to you by https://rockymountainslides.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Ep. 120 Black Sabbath - Master of Reality - Review & Reaction! Black Sabbath's Master of Reality, released in 1971, is a landmark album in heavy metal history. It took the band's signature doom-laden sound to a new level, emphasizing slower, heavier, and more menacing riffs. This album was crucial in shaping the doom, sludge, and stoner metal subgenres, influencing countless bands like Sleep, Kyuss, and Electric Wizard. Tony Iommi's down-tuned guitar (due to a factory accident that damaged his fingertips) contributed to an even darker and thicker sound, making Master of Reality one of the heaviest records of its time. Master of Reality laid the groundwork for multiple metal subgenres, particularly doom metal, sludge metal, and stoner rock. Its raw, down tuned heaviness, combined with themes of war, religion, drugs, and despair, resonated with generations of metalheads. The album is frequently cited as one of the greatest metal records of all time, and its influence can be heard in the works of bands like Metallica, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. This album solidified Black Sabbath's role as the forefathers of heavy metal, proving that music could be both devastatingly heavy and deeply introspective. Over 50 years later, Master of Reality remains essential listening for any rock or metal fan.

ANORA dominated the 97th Academy Awards last Sunday and as Sean Baker superfans — we're still riding high. Well, maybe not Gabe. Nevertheless! We invited our good buddy and Boston-based music writer Michael Cristopher on the show to talk to us about movies, DVD collections, Philly pride, interviewing Brian Johnson and Tony Iommi, Van Halen vs. Depeche Mode, Scott's movie tour, uninvited guests, Scott Ian, the Duck of Death, and we pick the BEST?!? best picture winners of all time. None of that made sense, right?
This week a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band that is near and dear to both of you humble hosts. A band whose unique harmonies and awesome riffs inspired both hosts to pick up guitars and start singing; the amazing Seattle grunge gods ALICE IN CHAINS! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by AIC's revolutionary game-changing music. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and it has also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Cicadastone – “Dime A Dozen” from Cold Chamber (2021)A Pale Horse Named Death – “Heroin Train” from And Hell Will Follow Me (2011)Drain STH – “Serve The Shame (acoustic)” from Horror Wrestling (1998)EMBASSYROWE – “Volition” from Dreamliar (2024)Failure – “Let It Drip” from Magnified (1994)Seventh Void – “Shadow On Me” from Heaven Is Gone (2009)My Sister's Machine – “Wasting Time” from Diva (1992)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

From Ozzy Osbourne to Black Label Society to Zakk Sabbath to, most recently, his stint filling in for his old friend “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott in Pantera, Zakk Wylde has left an unmistakable mark on the hard-rock and metal music worlds. Fresh off performing “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Cleveland Browns game in October, and paying homage to his boss Ozzy at the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Wylde joins this episode of Shred With Shifty to share his teachings from the book of rock. When he was learning to play, Wylde studied Frank Marino, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin along with Sabbath shredder Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, and “King Edward”—Eddie Van Halen—but Osbourne's original right-hand guitar-man Randy Rhoades was top of the crop. Little did Wylde know he'd go on to replace him after his tragic death, following up the work of Rhoades, Brad Gillis, and Jake E. Lee. He got to join his favorite band, but it wasn't an easy gig. “What's expected of you as an Ozzy player?” says Wylde. “The bar that Randy set was lights out.” After a quick pinch-harmonics tutorial, Wylde lays out how he used a Marshall JCM800 and Boss SD-1 with his “holy grail” bullseye Gibson Les Paul Custom to track the alternate-picking intensive on “Miracle Man,” a mix of “ingredients” from all the players Wylde loves. (“Pass the Ritchie Blackmore, boss!”) For those thinking of skimping and swapping in some hammer-ons and pull-offs, Shifty warns: “There are no shortcuts! Pick every note!” Along the way, Wylde discusses the inner workings of his tenure with Osbourne, including being the longest-running player in the group—like “working at the deli,” according to Wylde. And tune in to hear about Wylde's relationship to Ozzy's wife and manager Sharon Osbourne, who he refers to as “mom”—a role she performed well when she busted him at a nightclub while he was underage. https://youtube.com/live/p3sMg29xXtk Any guitarist who's been around long enough has dealt with their share of imitators. It's inevitable that someone will borrow their style, and while it can be frustrating, the true mark of a great guitarist is staying ahead of those who try to follow in their footsteps. Although no one could quite replicate Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking style, he once called out a session guitar legend as one of the biggest copycats he'd ever encountered. It's hard for any guitarist not to be influenced by Eddie. While tapping had been around in some form before him, Eddie perfected it, using it to craft entire musical passages. There were glimpses of it on Steely Dan records, but when Van Halen dropped ‘Eruption,' it was like watching someone reinvent the guitar in just two minutes. Suddenly, the same old blues licks weren't going to cut it anymore—Eddie had raised the bar for everyone. The session scene, though, had already started exploring different musical directions. Steely Dan, for example, had top-tier jazz and fusion musicians, but Rick Derringer was making waves on the rock side. While he was known for his hit ‘Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,' Derringer was also celebrated for his standout work with Edgar Winter, particularly the iconic lick in ‘Free Ride.' Despite his own skills, Derringer couldn't resist drawing from Eddie after seeing Van Halen on tour. But instead of just being inspired, he started outright copying Eddie's moves. According to Eddie, Derringer would go onstage and replicate his solos note for note, saying, “Rick Derringer opened for us last year, and he did my exact solo. The next night, he does my solo again and ends the set with ‘You Really Got Me,' just like we do. So I told him, ‘If you keep that up, you're not opening for us anymore.' And I kicked him off the tour.” Even Eddie knew the game. When Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi noted that the band had borrowed some of Sabbath's licks, making their music sound even darker and heavier. Derringer copying Eddie's style was a sign of the changing times. Guitarists who clung to traditional blues riffs were being left behind, while Eddie Van Halen had set a new standard, pushing the guitar to uncharted territories. If players didn't adapt, they risked fading into obscurity. “Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. Black Sabbath are solely responsible for conjuring the diabolical power of heavy metal. When guitarist Tony Iommi lost his fingertips as a teenager, he turned to a less painful style of playing— a style that produced a new, genre-defining type of gloom and heaviness. The band climbed through the seven circles of British podunk hell to international rock star success, but the lore of their dark imagery compelled the freaks to flood out of the woodwork and to their shows. Despite composing songs that warned against the evils of the occult, Black Sabbath attracted legions of devil worshippers, occultists and 1970s freak-flag-flying practitioners of the dark arts. Kids went mad for their metal. Critics hated it. And much to the band's dismay, Satanists found their battle cry in the heavy gloom that Black Sabbath had awakened. Ozzy is back and not a second too soon. We wrap our Sabbath Series with their 2013 reunion LP. The album saw the return of two thirds of the original quartet and while drummer Bill Ward is certainly missed, the magic that Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler had way back when things all began in 1970 is absolutely still very much in tact. The atmosphere, the riffs, the wonderful doom and gloom are all present. In short, Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath again. Completely abandoning rhyme or reason as I do what I want, wicked Witwicky style. A couple of slowed reverb renditions in there, I even get fired up as a middle aged man and sing a couple bars of Boylife in EU by Yung Lean. Didn't have that on my checklist of things to do this year but glad that it happened anyway. In other random news, last week on IG I saw that an old best friend of mine from high school was playing a gig in a band. This guy was a roommate of mine we had so many laughs and did the coolest stuff, I haven't seen him in years. I checked and the venue was 20 minutes from my place so I just showed up. Didn't tell him beforehand and he saw me from the stage. Biggest cheese on this guy's face when he knew it was me. Buddy killed it playing some Tony Iommi style metal lead and it was great, I'm glad I crawled out of my shell and actually showed up. Holy moly what an ear beating what am I a novelist now? My fingers hurt and I have football to watch. My fantasy team is due to keel over and take a swan dive at any moment. As always, thank you for being here.. Hope someone enjoys itYour Host with the Most,DJ Witwicky

Zakk describes the Berzerkus Festival as a large-scale version of high school keg parties, bringing together friends and bands for a party. He emphasizes reaching out to friends in various bands, including Cody Jinks, to participate. The festival features diverse activities like beer tasting, food trucks, a car show, and a battle of the bands. Zakk reflects on celebrating the legacy of Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul through Pantera's music, noting the emotional impact on fans and the importance of honoring past musicians. He shares his personal connections and experiences, expressing excitement for the festival and the camaraderie within the Pantera camp. Zakk speaks on learning Pantera songs on YouTube and how most of the time if he learns by ear, he will learn them more difficule than they really are. Zakk expresses admiration for Dimebag Darrell's unique writing style and chord choices, comparing him to other greats like Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads. They note the interesting and unconventional aspects of Dime's compositions, highlighting how his choices made the music distinctive.
