Swedish Doom legends Candlemass have epitomised the doom movement pretty much since their inception in 1984.Albums like Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall catapulted the band into the heavyweight division and Candlemass have refused to take a backward step since.Over the course of 18 months Candlemass set about adding another masterpiece to their already impressive resume and the world finally has a chance to decide for themselves when the band releases their latest album Sweet Evil Sun on Friday, November 18.With newly reinstated and original vocalist Johan Lanqvist now on his second album since returning after a 32 year hiatus, Candlemass have delved deep into their history to produce an album for the future, complete with old school sensibilities combined with all the lessons learnt over the band's almost 40 year existence.Lanqvist joined HEAVY to discuss the new album."Leif has been working on this for almost 18 months," he affirmed, "and he is the main writer of all of the music and lyrics of Candlemass. He called me up and said he had a few new songs and asked if I was ready to do demo's and we did a couple of them and he brought the songs back home to work on them. He's been doing that for a long time and Sweet Evil Sun is what came out in the very end."After nearly 40 years we ask Lanqvist if Candlemass have a set process when it comes to writing an album or if it varies each time."I think we are all doing it the modern way these days," he offered. "For example first you do the drums and then you maybe put some guitars on and then the next week guitars and I have a week or two doing the vocals. But it's irrational in a way because you can make a lot of changes and you don't have to play them all over again, so that's how we do it. In the very beginning we do a couple of demo's but when it's all done and this is the way the songs should be we make it this way as I just told you."In the full interview, Johan discusses Sweet Evil Sun in greater detail, tapping into the sound and energy of the band's early music, having Jennie Ann Smith from Avatarium adding guest vocals to the track When Death Sighs, the musical climate that gave birth to Candlemass, why he left the band after their debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, what happened to make him return 32 years later, what it was like coming back into an established band, reintegrating himself back into the band, future plans and more.

Alors que le mentor et père co-fondateur d'Avatarium, Leif Edling a pris, pour raisons de santé doublées d'un retour à la maison mère Candlemass, une distance grandissante avec ce projet parallèle qu'il a initié en 2012, le dernier né du groupe, « Death, Where Is Your Sting », à la référence toute biblique, marque une réelle émancipation du quintet de Stockholm qui a fini par couper le cordon ombilical avec son géniteur. Ce cinquième album d'Avatarium, bien que toujours mâtiné de Doom, se révèle ainsi moins marqué par les influences du dirigeable zeppelinien et les riffs heavy de sir Tony Iommi sur lesquelles il avait pris racine. Ever since her first self-titled album in 2013, the magical voice of front woman Jennie-Ann Smith has enchanted me. From my point of view, the band has made an incredible metamorphosis over a total of four albums and let more and more warm rays of sunshine into the compositions of the deep, heavy dark, cold sounds of the Black Sabbath-type. Just have a look at all the acoustic songs on the AVATARIUM YouTube channel, you will be very surprised.Their latest album "The Fire I Long For" was released last November, with which the band opened up a completely new niche, which they call "Dark Gospel". If you want to know more about this, I should watch the explainatory video for the song "Rubicon", which went online for a few days.2020 could have been the year of AVATARIUM, two warm-up shows were played in Sweden and then an extensive live implementation with the highlights Wacken and Summer Breeze, to name just a few, should follow. But these plans were also lost in the wake of the pandemic.Almost by chance, one of the first two shows in Stockholm was recorded with cameras. I was allowed to watch this video completely and can tell you that the concert is an absolute eye-catcher due to the historical location from the 19th century. Über insgesamt vier Alben hat die Band aus meiner Sicht eine unglaubliche Metamorphose hingelegt und in die tief-schweren düsteren kalten Klänge Marke Black Sabbath immer mehr warme Sonnenstrahlen in die Kompositionen reingelassen. Schaut Euch hierzu einfach mal die ganzen Akustik-Songs auf dem YouTube-Channel von AVATARIUM an, ihr werdet sehr überrascht sein.Ihr letztes Album „The Fire I Long For“ erschien im letzten November, mit dem die Band eine völlig neue Nische eröffnete, die sie selbst als „Dark Gospel“ bezeichnet. Ich durfte mir dieses Video bereits komplett ansehen und kann Euch sagen, daß das Konzert schon aufgrund der historischen Location aus dem 19 Jahrhundert ein absoluter Hingucker ist. Über 90 Minuten brettert ein düsteres Doom-Gewitter los, im extremen Kontrast mit schon fast Folk-artigen Balladen, gefühlvollen bluesigen Gitarrensoli, ganz viel 70er Schweineorgel und vor allem diese magische Stimme von Jennie-Ann Smith. El Goro and SonOfOdin check out a cover album from Danzig and Avatarium's second full-length. In the indie segment, El Goro entertains some Finnish melodeath with an EP by Enthring. Finally, SonOfOdin hoists the Jolly Roger and lets the filthy pirates of Running Wild raid Heavy Metal Valhalla.
