A sombre but celebratory start to That 80s Show as Paulo and Dori recount the impact Mark Pilgrim unknowingly had on this show. @MacAngelZA graciously allowed us to use his fitting tribute to Mark which can be found on these platforms: https://www.instagram.com/macangelza/?hl=en https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5mDDvupuqFHNrhdvaMd_jw/videos https://web.facebook.com/macangelza/?_rdc=1&_rdr https://soundfx.co.za/macangel/ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paulo thinks Kevin Bacon is being foot loose with the truth, while both movie recommendations end up in space - only one of them almost ruined Mel Brooks? A 10 hour loop of the sax from Careless Whisper is rated as ''M for Saxual Content'' and George Michael needs YOU to get him into the RNRHOF! Finally - 80s movies had a weird fascination with invisibility, and an expected fascination with perverts. Everything we discuss in this show can be found on @That80sShowSA on Facebook. This show originally plays out with music that we have to remove from the podcast - here are the songs we spoke about and played: I won't let the sun go down on me - Nik Kershaw. Wake me up (Before you go go) - Wham! Tarzan Boy - Baltimora. #macangelmusic #macangelza #KevinBacon #6degreesofkevinbacon #Melbrooks #Spaceballs #TheLastFighter #GeorgeMichael #SteveGuttenberg

South Africa has lost a radio legend. Mark Pilgrim was known for his loving and compassionate personality. Amid the sadness and grief, let's take time to reflect on the laughter, joy, and good times we shared with this radio giant. It's been 12 years since Darren Simpson called up Mark in one of his infamous Whackhead pranks. In classic Pilgrim style, Mark answered Whackhead's questions like a gentleman, and when he realised it was all a prank, he called Darren a “naughty sausage”. May we all learn from Mark to lighten up and laugh at ourselves. Rest in peace.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week my guest is CEO of Chester Zoo, Dr Mark Pilgrim. If you've been following the news for the last few weeks you'll know that until the 9th of June 2020, zoos and safari parks around the UK had a very uncertain future. Chester Zoo in particular was highlighted as one that may never be able to open if the lockdown restrictions were extended for much longer, and launched a fundraising campaign to fill the multimillion pound hole in its finances caused by being closed for over 3 months.. For those of you who don't know of Chester Zoo; where I'm from in the North West of England you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't visit Chester Zoo at some point in their childhood. It's the most visited wildlife attraction in the UK, with over 2m visitors in 2019. Consistently ranked as one of the top zoos on the planet, for its high welfare animal care, the wide open landscapes and its hugely successful conservation efforts around the world. For me, it's Our Zoo. It's where I came as a kid with my family, with friends for birthday parties, brought my wife on dates before we were married and a place my kids know intimately. The prospect of Chester Zoo no longer existing would be heartbreaking. So we reached out to them to see if we could give them a bit of publicity, and were blown away that Mark was willing to come on and talk to us. In between booking and recording the podcast, it was announced that zoos and safari parks could reopen on the 15th of June - the day Mark and I recorded this conversation, so it's all very fresh and raw, and by no means are they out of the woods yet. TechCentral — In this episode, Duncan McLeod is joined by South African broadcasting legend and Apple aficionado Mark Pilgrim to talk about Apple's big developer conference happening in San Francisco this week. In the podcast, Pilgrim and McLeod talk about their highlights from the event, including all the big announcements around iOS, macOS and watchOS. Pilgrim talks about his love affair with all things Apple, how it started, how many Apple devices he owns - and why he will never (repeat: never) consider moving to Android. He also talks about his career in broadcasting - he now hosts the 9am to midday slot on Johannesburg radio station Hot919FM - including how he got his start in radio (it's a great story). He also opens up about his fight with cancer - he was diagnosed with testicular cancer at just 18 - and his heart attack in 2008. It's a sobering tale. It's a fantastic discussion. You don't want to miss it!

Neil MacGregor's world history as told through things that time has left behind. This week he is exploring vigorous empires that flourished across the world 600 years ago - visiting the Inca in South America, Ming Dynasty China, and the Timurids in their capital at Samarkand and the Ottomans in Constantinople. Today he examines the fledgling empire of Portugal and describes what the European world was looking like at this time. His chosen object is one of the most enduring in art history, and one of the most duplicated - Albrecht Durer's famous print of an Indian rhino, an animal he never had never seen. The rhino was brought to Portugal in 1514 and Neil uses this classic image to examine European ambitions. Mark Pilgrim of Chester Zoo considers what it must have been like to transport such a beast and the historian Felipe Fernandez-Armesto describes the potency of the image for Europeans of the age.
