As a top cybersecurity expert in the commercial sector, Mark Ryland has spent nearly a decade following the development of AI systems—their possibilities, their risks, and their limits. And he's found reason for measured optimism. At this year's Heights Parents Conference on "AI and Our Sons: Optimism in Uncharted Waters," Mr. Ryland brought a moderating perspective to the podium, sharing his insights into how AI really operates and what kind of impact it may have on the job economy our children will inherit. Rust adoption can be loud, like when companies such as Microsoft, Meta, and Google announce their use of Rust in high-profile projects. But there are countless smaller teams quietly using Rust to solve real-world problems, sometimes even without noticing. This episode tells one such story. Cian and his team at Cloudsmith have been adopting Rust in their Python monolith not because they wanted to rewrite everything in Rust, but because Rust extensions were simply best-in-class for the specific performance problems they were trying to solve in their Django application. As they had these initial successes, they gained more confidence in Rust and started using it in more and more areas of their codebase.About CloudsmithMade with love in Belfast and trusted around the world. Cloudsmith is the fully-managed solution for controlling, securing, and distributing software artifacts. They analyze every package, container, and ML model in an organization's supply chain, allow blocking bad packages before they reach developers, and build an ironclad chain of custody.About Cian ButlerCian is a Service Reliability Engineer located in Dublin, Ireland. “Learn to Code.” A decade ago that slogan was everywhere as computer programming was seen as a job that not only paid well, but almost guaranteed job security, especially in a tech hub like Seattle. But in the last four years, more than 700,000 tech workers have been laid off. And while overhiring during the pandemic, and rising interest rates, are believed to have sparked most of these layoffs, another issue is changing coding forever – artificial intelligence. GUEST: Clive Thompson is a tech and science writer who recently spoke with more than 70 software developers for the New York Times magazine about how AI is reshaping the future. The piece is called “Coding After Coders: The End of Computer Programming as We Know It” Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! What does it feel like when an entire room seems to turn to shimmering gold, and you are certain you have just witnessed a miracle, only to later discover it was a hypnotic illusion? On this episode of Cults, Culture & Coercion, I sit down with my longtime friend, former client, and now colleague, filmmaker Jim Picariello. Thirty years ago, Jim was a devoted follower of Zen Master Rama (Frederick Lenz). His family hired me to help him leave the group, and together we unpacked how hypnotic suggestion, phobia indoctrination, and social pressure created those “supernatural” experiences and kept him trapped in a high-control cult.In this conversation, Jim walks us through his recruitment as an anxious college student, the engineered “golden light” experiences that convinced him Rama was enlightened, and the fears that cut him off from friends and family. We also talk about how his parents and I worked together to reach him ethically, how a single powerful hypnotic demonstration helped break the spell, and what it took for him to rebuild his identity and life on the outside.Today, Jim is a multi-award-winning filmmaker turning his story and decades of cult education into a dark romantic comedy feature called The Cult of Us, about two young people in different cults who fall in love and try to “rescue” each other. Along the way, we explore how fiction can teach people to recognize undue influence, authoritarian leaders, and coercive relationships in a way that is funny, moving, and truly life-saving. If you care about freedom of mind, rising authoritarianism, and how people actually wake up from destructive groups, this is an interview you will want to listen to and share. At just 22, Iddris Sandu's life story was already legendary. This Architectural Technologist learned to program at the age of 11 and has worked with everyone from Kanye West to Nipsey Hussle to Space X. In this episode from 2020 we talk coding, holograms, what ancient flutes have to do with computers, how programming works and why it's important. The designer and entrepreneur also shares his favorite programming languages, philosophies on future technology and why we should all strive to be dynamic rather than single-minded. Eli Sharabi (אלי שרעבי) is an Israeli father and survivor who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and held hostage in Gaza for 491 days. During that time, he endured unimaginable suffering - the murder of his wife Lian, his daughters Noya and Yahel, and the death of his brother Yossi, who was abducted with him and killed in captivity. Despite it all, Eli refuses to give up. He has become a symbol of unshakable resilience and hope. In interviews, Eli shares how his faith didn't break - it grew. Surrounded by darkness, he says it was his belief in God and in the Jewish people that gave him strength to survive.► DONATE to ELI to rebuild his life here:→ https://www.charidy.com/sharabiBuy his book (Hebrew): https://a.co/d/9dB6H1GThank YOU to the Young Israel of Woodmere for facilitating this interview.✬ SPONSORS OF THE EPISODE ✬► Woodmont College: A Bright Future AheadIf you're figuring out your next step, look into the online, frum-friendly BS in Computer Programming from Woodmont College. Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has been edged out of the headlines this past week, or so, by the administration's current flirtation with a constitutional crisis. But the DOGE team is still busy. One project on the office's agenda, originally reported by WIRED late last month, is to rewrite the Social Security Administration's code base—in other words, the agency's computer programs, which handle millions of Americans' personal and financial data. Brooke sits down with Clive Thompson, author of Coders: The Making of a New Tribe and the Remaking of the World, contributing writer to New York Times Magazine, and monthly columnist for Wired, to discuss the coding language under DOGE's microscope. It took much longer than I expected, but we FINALLY have Brian Massey as our special guest after nine seasons of The Ripple Effect Podcast. This man right here is the reason why I got into podcasting. There is no The Ripple Effect Podcast if Brian hasn't injected this tiny idea into my brain. I said it in the interview and will repeat it as I type this. Brian has always been that guy who's ahead of his time. Back when podcasting wasn't as popular as it is today, Brian told me it would be the next big thing. Turns out he's right. Seriously, I think he is Nostradamus reincarnated! Piecing together his Computer Programming roots and his Marketing experience, Brian Massey, a.k.a. The Conversion Scientist, started a consulting company– Conversion Sciences. Practicing the science of data analytics, lead generation, email marketing, and web conversion optimization, Brian and his team help businesses grow by turning traffic into sales. Aside from being the "guy in the lab coat," Brian Massey is also the Author of "Your Customer Creation Equation," a book about the five online formulas for achieving results from high-performing websites. This book will help aspiring Digital Marketers and Entrepreneurs out there! Be sure to listen to the full podcast episode to get a grasp of transforming data into insights to help your clients or your business. He's a true inspiration and Alie shamelessly begged him for life advice.
