Sarah meets Anoushka Lucas, currently starring in Rhinoceros at the Almeida Theatre, to discuss the impact of theatre on her life. She's always called versatile but says she takes on new projects because she just wants to learn more. She reveals what it was like to work with Daniel Fish on the award-winning reimagining of Oklahoma!, why Rhinoceros is such a play for our times and how she wrote Elephant, her first play, in lockdown. Plus a bit about being a woman in the music industry and the lessons of the Stamford experiment. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. The show runs through May 25. Visitors can enter the gallery by calling or buzzing the office, open Thursdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A poetry and potluck event will be held May 18.Mojsilov explains that Degener's work highlights endangered plant species. The exhibition includes 18 framed handmade paper works, with pulp manipulated to form plant imagery. Eight handmade planters, constructed from up-cycled wood, spell out “in danger.” Suspended discs depicting endangered plants, made from frozen paper, gradually melt into the planters, which are seeded with native flowers that will grow over the exhibit's duration.Krug said: I could go on and on about Amanda's artwork, because she's part scientist. She's a chemist. She researches all her subjects to the T. She's a specialist in handmade paper and the history of handmade paper, she collects fibers from all over the world.— Ilene Krug MojsilovA 21st Century Take on Theater of the AbsurdTheater maker Harry Waters, Jr. attended the opening night of Pangea World Theater's staging of “Rhinoceros,” directed by Dipankar Mukherjee. The absurdist play by French playwright Eugène Ionesco was written in 1958 and follows the transformation of a town's residents into rhinoceroses — all except one, the least heroic character. The show runs through April 19 at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.Waters praised the production's creativity: inventive lighting, a soundscape of Indigenous music, strong choreography and a diverse cast of professional and amateur actors.Harry said: The gift, I would have to say, of what Dipankar gives to this adaptation [is] that it starts huge, and then, as the story goes, it winnows down to this very simple, important issue of the one human being that's standing in resistance to all the totalitarianism and the conformity ... how are we also taking our own stands in spite of everything that's being thrown [at us] that really allows us to know that we're not crazy, that it is not insane that you're standing strong. So that's a conceptual thing that I was really quite pleased to see without being beaten over the head by it.— Harry Waters, Jr.A Multimedia Symphony in the South MetroRetired attorney and former St. Olaf Choir singer Maren Swanson of Burnsville is excited for a joint choral performance at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake this Saturday at 4 p.m. South Metro Chorale will perform alongside Singers in Accord and Kantorei, with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kathy Saltzman Romey. The concert features “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci,” a multimedia symphony by Minnesota composer Jocelyn Hagen.Maren said: I heard Jocelyn speak once about having grown up in a musical family in a small town in North Dakota, and about singing and playing piano from the age of three, she said that she lay in bed as a as an older child, hearing orchestral music in her head and wishing she knew how to write the music down. Well now we get to hear the enchanting music in her head. The work has been performed all across the country and internationally. I actually heard it in Croatia in 2023. The libretto features an English translation of select texts from the notebooks of Da Vinci. The score is soaring, sometimes lyrical, sometimes percussive, always gorgeous. The video uses a new technology that allows it to be synced to the nuances of the music as conducted in a live event. In effect, the video is played like an instrument of the orchestra responding to the conductor, and so every performance is spontaneous and unique. The video features an unfolding of text and images from the notebooks and other animated images that bring the music to life.— Maren Swanson
Today's True Weird Stuff - The King's Rhinoceros In the 1500s, King Manuel of Portugal gifted Pope Leo a beautiful, white elephant as a gesture of obedience to the Vatican. Unfortunately, the majestic beast passed away after only two years. To make up for it, King Manuel tried to ship Pope Leo a rhinoceros named Ganda; however, the rhino met its demise in a shipwreck before it could make it to Rome. The only good thing to come from this debacle was the immortalization of Ganda by an artist who created a sculpture without ever having seen a rhinoceros.

His extensive portfolio includes engravings, altarpieces, and portraits, with renowned pieces such as the Apocalypse series and the Rhinoceros. Dürer's theoretical writings on mathematics and proportions further cement his legacy as a key figure in art history, blending Northern European detail with Italian Renaissance ideals. Delve into the spiritual dimensions of Dürer's art, where his focus on religious themes resonates with the values of Reformed Christianity. Inspired by Eugene Ionesco's Rhinoceros, an absurdist play about the invasion by a crash of rhinos (read: fascism), my Skool Daze is an absurdist tragicomedy about teachers and students getting distracted by all sorts of things, effectively putting blinders on to a real threat, in this case, an armed intruder (or two) in the school. Daze opens with a faculty meeting wherein administrators head a workshop on protocol for the event of an armed intruder. Things do not quite go as planned in the simulation and the faculty are not quite as attentive as they should be and are easily distracted by this and that. In the midst of their distraction, they see an actual shooter through the halls of the building, leading to at least one administrator getting shot! No, for realz! This episode is the surreal sequel to Act I of Skool Dayz, in which the previous events - an intruder or two runnning through the school hallways and the faculty's slow reaction to it and to their own administrator getting shot - lead to their inevitable (?) conclusion. In this episode you will find out who the intruders are, why they have intruded, and how the administrators, faculty and students in the building react to this menacing breach. Tune in and embrace the strange and unsettling conclusion, Act II, of Skool Dayz.
Welcome back to the 73rd episode of "Have You Herd About Animals?" and the episode is on RHINOOOOOOOOOOO'S. Rhinos are one of the Big Five animals popular in African safaris, but they also live in Asia and even lived in Europe in the past. There are currently five different species of rhino—two in Africa and three in Asia. All rhinos are famed for their horns. Some species have one horn, while others have two.Rhinoceros horn is made of keratin, the same material as human fingernails, and they grow continuously throughout a rhino's life. Like fingernails, rhinoceros horns can be trimmed without discomfort or pain.Despite two rhino species mentioning colours (black rhino and white rhino), all rhinos are grey. They range in size from 600-kilogram Sumatran rhinos to 3,500-kilogram white rhinos.Despite their large size, rhinos are herbivores—they only eat plant matter. They make up five of only nine remaining megaherbivore species left on Earth. Their exact diet depends on their habitat. For example, white rhinos have evolved square lips to graze on abundant grass, while black rhinos have developed pointed lips to pick leaves and plants.

No A.I. voices are ever used in the show.IN THIS EPISODE: Scrying is the act of gazing into a reflective or translucent object to open your intuition. This supposedly allows the scryer to gain information they may not have access to normally inside their conscious mind. Often the object used for this is the often seen, but often misunderstood crystal ball. (Little Known Secrets Of The Crystal Ball) *** Five hundred years ago, Europe saw its first rhinoceros in more than a thousand years. Well, sort of. In reality, it was an accidental fake. (Dürer's Rhinoceros) *** A physics paper proposes neither you nor the world around you are real. If that's true, then does that mean you're not actually listening to this podcast? (What If I Only Think I'm Real?) *** When it comes to mythical monsters, the dragon seems to have never lost its celebrity. Dragons have always been popular – not just on multi-million-dollar cable channels and blockbuster movies, but in games, posters, artwork, and tales young and old, generation over generation, in just about every culture. (Dragons and Dragon Kings) *** An extra-marital affair in 1812 resulted in a pregnancy, and a murder. And evidence of the term “sins of the father” also comes into play. (A Most Horrible Murder in Hankelow) *** From "The Beast" to "The Red Ripper" to "The Candy Man," child murderers might be the most terrifying people to ever walk the Earth. We'll look at a few serial killers who thought nothing of murdering the most innocent of humanity. Richard is back to host this week's aBlogtoWatch Weekly show — sadly, he needs a vacation from his vacation — and the team starts right off on its usual quirky path by asking ChatGPT the price of a rhino. What does this have to do with watches? It all comes back to Hublot. (You'll have to listen to decode all this.) Then Rick chastises Ariel and Ripley for talking about too many watches last week. Once that post-mort is done, the guys spend some time talking about Ariel's recent column, whose thesis is that watch consumers don't really care who invented things. An interesting convo ensues. Back on the subject of watch books, which took up a good bit of air time last week, the team discusses the new Rolex Submariner book. Then it's on to some chitchat about watches from Casio, Sinn, and Hublot, followed by the moment we all wait for every week.... Guess the Price of the Seiko! As per usual, they conclude the show with a few rounds of Hit, Miss, Maybe. 0:00 Introduction 9:57 Ariel's Thoughts: Watch Consumers Don't Really Care Who Invented Things First https://www.ablogtowatch.com/ariels-thoughts-watch-consumers-dont-really-care-who-invented-things-first/ 15:34 Perezcope Review Of Rolex Submariner Book. https://perezcope.com/2024/09/30/review-of-the-authorized-rolex-submariner-book-and-why-the-1926-oyster-was-not-the-first-waterproof-watch/ 21:49 Mod Your Casio F91W https://www.crowdsupply.com/oddly-specific-objects/sensor-watch-pro 26:21 Sinn 903 St II Aviation Chronograph With Slide Rule Bezel https://www.ablogtowatch.com/watch-review-sinn-903-st-ii-aviation-chronograph-with-slide-rule-bezel/ 31:42 Hublot Spirit Of Big Bang Tourbillon Sorai Watch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-hublot-spirit-of-big-bang-tourbillon-sorai-watch/ 38:23 Guess The Price Of The Seiko Seiko Presage Cocktail Time STAR BAR Limited-Edition SRPK93 and SRE015 Watches https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-seiko-presage-cocktail-time-star-bar-limited-edition-srpk93-and-sre015-watches/ 45:00 Hit, Miss, Maybe 49:20 Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Watches https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-jaeger-lecoultre-reverso-tribute-watches/ 1:02:00 Omega Seamaster Regatta America's Cup Watch https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-omega-seamaster-regatta-americas-cup-watch/ 1:11:00 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date Watch In Forged Carbon https://www.ablogtowatch.com/new-release-audemars-piguet-royal-oak-concept-split-seconds-chronograph-gmt-large-date-watch-in-forged-carbon/ Check out ABTW on YouTube to catch up on the latest episodes of ABTWW, Hit, Miss, Maybe, video reviews, and more. Host Aaron Odom (@TridentTheatre) brings back a returning guest, his son Ethan, to discuss one of the most widely studied and performed plays of the twentieth century, the anti-totalitarian allegory, "Rhinoceros" by Eugene Ionesco.
Hear from author, actress, screenplay writer, and producer, Lindy Hudis. In this episode, Lindy and Da discuss the writing process, and Lindy shares a little bit about her background. Lindy also shares the process of bringing to life her film, The Lesson.
Inspired by Ionesco's Rhinoceros, an absurdist play about the rise of fascism, my Skool Daze is an absurdist tragicomedy about teachers and students getting distracted by all sorts of things, effectively putting blinders on to a real threat, in this case an armed intruder (or two) in their own school. After a general introduction to the play and the actors, Daze opens with a faculty meeting where administrators head a workshop on protocol for the event of an armed intruder. Things do not quite go as planned in the simulation and the faculty are not quite as attentive as they should be and are easily distracted by this and that, which does not bode well should a routine workshop spiral out of control as alarms jangle nerves and an intruder runs through the halls of the school... Enjoy the distracted dysfunction of Act I, Part I of this version of Skool Dayz.

In Episode Fourteen, DDSWTNP turn our attention for the first time to DeLillo's drama – and to a largely unknown work by DeLillo as playwright, a 1966 radio play and disturbing take on U.S. race relations titled Mother. We cover the circumstances of the play's original broadcasts, its re-emergence in an internet archive recording more than 50 years later, and the strange way in which this story's armchair progressives and Billie Holiday fans, Ralph and Sally, end up making a fetishizing travesty of civil rights and racial integration in the play's brief 27 minutes. Topics include the importance of radio to Mother's themes of media occlusion, moral numbness, and erasure; what DeLillo means by Ralph's “white malady” of transparency and how it reworks images from another Ralph's Invisible Man; and what this play has to do with contemporaneous issues like interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia. We talk extensively as well about how Mother presages parts of the early novels, from jazz love in Americana to Taft in End Zone and Azarian in Great Jones Street. Suzanne Morphew's death has been ruled a homicide by undetermined means. The toxicology report shows several drugs found in her system at the time of her death: Butorphanol, a synthetic opioid pain-killer, Azaperone, a sedative commonly used as a tranquilizer for pigs and elephants, and medetomidine, a sedative that can decrease an animal's heart rate, commonly used by veterinarians. According to a 2021 affidavit, Barry Morphew admitted to police that he frequently used BAM and other tranquilizers to sedate deer to remove antlers for his hunting business. However, BAM is the commonly used abbreviation for Butophanol, Azaperaone, and Medetomidine. Azaperone is used as a sedative for Elephants, Rhinoceros, and Giraffes, while Medetomidine facilitates immobilization of large carnivores and great apes. Police say in the recovery of Susanne Morphew's body, her favorite tee-shirt was pulled from the location. And in the past few days, it's reported that husband Barry Morphew quietly slipped into an invite-only memorial for his murdered wife. We hear a silly fable on how the rhino got his saggy skin.
I certainly enjoy animal symbolism, mythology and folklore, in hopes that you do too, which is my reason for continuing this animal series of podcasts. I'd like to share with you that a few weeks ago, I visited a zoo here in Texas, and I was struck by how ancient the white rhinoceros seemed. It looks so prehistoric in its appearance. The rhinoceros is a large, powerful, fascinating creature, known for its thick skin, strong horn, resilience and unwavering determination. It has been a powerful source of fascination for many civilizations throughout history, often representing strength, protection, and stability. Its symbolism can be found in various mythologies and folklore. In Africa, it holds great significance as a symbol of strength and protection. It is admired for its ability to defend itself with its thick skin and powerful horn. In many tribes, it represents courage and determination. For instance, in East Africa, the rhinoceros is considered a guardian spirit that protects their communities from harm. The Shona tribe in Zimbabwe sees it as a symbol of fertility, due to its ability to reproduce and reproduce quickly, despite harsh weather conditions. In some African cultures, it is associated with the rising sun because of its horns' appearance looking like a sun rising. In Chinese culture, the rhinoceros is a symbol of power and stability. It represents wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. It is often depicted alongside dragons and other mythical creatures. Overall, the rhinoceros embodies attributes of power, solidarity, and resilience. It is admired for its size, strength, and unyielding energy. Its remarkable horn has long been a symbol of protection and defense, reminding us to be resilient in the face of our own challenges. So, call on the rhinoceros…Call on the rhinoceros medicine for the true essence of power. “Call IT in With Dar!”Support the showPhoto credit: Rebecca Lange Photography Music credit: Kevin MacLeod Incompetech.com (licensed under Creative Commons) Production credit: Erin Schenke @ Emerald Support Services LLC. By Ben Light in Salem, OR - January 20, 2024 - The Big 5 represent the five most dangerous animals on the African continent. Elephant, Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, Lion and Leopard. Of the 5, somewhat surprisingly, the Cape Buffalo is widely regarded as the most dangerous. They are territorial, protective, and known across Africa for their downright belligerence and unpredictability. They have an incredible memory, and have been known to attack someone who has harmed it years before on sight. Elephants never forget, but Cape Buffalo never forgive...
A weak ad attempts to make too many points, and none of them very powerfully.A weak ad is a bloated little porcupine.A great ad drives a single point through one side of your house and out the other with all the momentum of a freight train. A powerful ad is a charging rhinoceros. The world is covered in porcupine ads. They waddle slowly across your television screen. They crawl out of your radio like termites. Their dead carcasses are displayed on billboards along the highways. You stumble over them wherever you go.If I paint an unpleasant picture, it is because porcupines are annoying little rodents. But a charging rhino is a wonder to behold. It makes us stop what we're doing and pay attention. A rhino pays no attention to the hall monitor who wags his finger and scolds, “No running in the hall!”And that really pisses some people off.Chris Torbay wrote a charging rhinoceros radio ad that makes a single point, very powerfully. I told you about it a few weeks ago, one day after it began charging across the sky from the tops of radio towers in Florida. The ad features a woman who works at an insurance company:My name is Michelle, and I work for Chapman Insurance. I work in the call center answering the phone. What kind of job is that you're thinking? Well, when it's your call, maybe I make a difference for you. Maybe you were dreading another one of those stupid corporate phone things with their “press one” and “press two” and “press six if a palm tree just fell on your dog house.”[Now Michelle starts to become emotional, getting increasing wound-up as the ad progresses, until she finishes with thundering pride and deep conviction]But you get to talk to a person, and you get to tell a real person how worried you are. And I get it, because I'm a real person, and I do this for a living. And I can see your policy and answer your questions because I know how confusing this can be!! And when you hang up, you feel like someone with a heart and a soul, and a pretty awesome understanding of insurance has had the basic human decency to answer the phone and talk to you like a person instead of making you press six!!! My name is Michelle. I work with Chapman and your insurance call matters to me!!!!Does it surprise you that the insurance company has had multiple complaints about that ad?It makes a single point:“Business phones should be answered by knowledgeable people who can give you accurate and immediate answers.”Rhinoceros ads always get complaints.Chris Torbay has a younger brother named Mick Torbay who lives in Toronto and rides a rhinoceros everywhere he goes. Mick and I had lunch yesterday with Kyle Caldwell of Atlanta and Ryan Chute of Halifax. Mick said,“When I unleash an ad, there is a specific number of complaints I'm looking for, and it isn't zero.”The rest of us nodded our affirmation. The majority of people love to see a rhino put on a show. They love rhinos because rhinos are never boring. Porcupines are boring. The rage of the tiny people who are shouting at Chapman Insurance are mostly business owners who are using those abominable “press one” and “press two” machines instead of having the basic human decency to answer the phone and talk to you like a person. You can see now how that ad could make them angry, right?Porcupine lovers are prickly, and easily aggrieved, and quick to call and shout,“Your ads are terrible! You're not doing it right! You should hire a professional who knows how to talk about features and benefits and price and selection and value and convenience and how long you've been in business, and all the awards you've won, and say the name of your company at least 7 times in the first 30 seconds. You need to...
Novelist Timothy Schaffert joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss how the concept of farce relates to today's GOP-controlled House of Representatives. Schaffert describes the lack of self-awareness in both fictional and real-life characters, including politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz, and analyzes how it renders them comical, absurd, and maddening to watch. He talks about what observers can learn from those behaviors, and also reads from his forthcoming book, The Titanic Survivors Book Club.
