In this episode Im chatting with Megan Fitzpatrick. Megan is the CEO & Founder of The Fitz Solution, a national classroom empowerment program for developing teens in high school looking to make their next big decision - college or not? As a classroom teacher for more than eight years, developing curriculum for the district and the Florida Department of Education and seeing the standards and creating the pacing guides for testing and related materials, these projects showed her the immense need beyond academics of instilling self-worth and self-confidence for students to explore who they are, and where they want to be. She founded The Fitz Solution to provide customized one on one and group tutoring sessions that help students not only with their core academics, but as well, build their life confidence and make decisions for tomorrow - without shame, fear, or guilt. In 2019 she created “The Ultimate Selfie” - a signature program method part of The Fitz Solution to help empower teens to confidently answer the question: "What's Next?" She works with teens across the nation to define their strengths, values, and passions and has created a guide for life after high school. She is committed to creating a filterless world for her clients, free of judgment. There is a very real situation happening every day in our world that many people (particularly parents) are not aware of: Human Trafficking. North Texas is a particularly vulnerable area because of the flow-through of Interstate Highways and our airports. We talk to a lady (who is disguised) named "June" who was sold into this dark lifestyle by her mother at age eleven. While your kids may not be subject to that side of this issue, they do face uninvited sexual advances starting at an alarmingly young age. And if you have college students, you should be particularly interested in what "June" has to say. Next, Cindy Burnette, the SANE Program Director at Texas Health Resources explains what the "Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners" program is and how it could help anyone who has experienced any kind of unwelcome sexual assault. It is important to note that many of our hospitals across North Texas offer the SANE program by these specially-trained nurses, so if this has happened to you, help is closer than you might think. Finally, we talk to Dr. Megan Fitzpatrick, Diagnostic Radiologist at Baylor University Medical Center about a high-risk breast screening program they are now offering patients whose regular mammograms indicate a higher than normal risk of developing breast cancer. What happens next? We will find out from Dr. Fitzpatrick. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode Recorded October 11, 2021. Freddy Roman has grown up within the furniture field and mastered a variety of trades revolving around restoration woodworking and everything that goes along with it, from veneer work in neoclassical furniture to glazing antique windows. This is a thoughtful episode coming from someone who occupies the space where “trades” and “craft” are the same. Freddy shares his thoughts about the differences between handwork and machine work and what he's learned in the process of being a woodworker. He also explains the importance of teaching handwork to folks lost skills that would've been commonplace a few decades ago. We start out 2019 with an explosion not a bang. Our guests are award-winning investigative journalist May Jeong, award-winning writer/stand up comedian Josh Gondelman and singular blues punk rock n’ roll bad ass musician Shilpa Ray. Along with special surprise guest Mitch The Enthusiasm Coach and Megan Fitzpatrick Gets It Off Her Chest. Christian and Shonali catch up on the holidays, mom talk, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Schulz' signature and the opportunity which 2019 will hopefully bring. Their first guest is investigative journalist May Jeong. May is a wunderkind. She's spent years living in Afghanistan covering the war and received high accolades for reporting from there. We discuss her courage, smarts and as she calls it being "young and dumb" in terms of saying yes to every opportunity to get the real story. Look for her upcoming work in the New Yorker regarding another explosive ground breaking story. Shonali's new 2019 positive attitude is due to the new man in her life, Mitch The Enthusiasm Coach. Mitch who also wears two headbands at one time shows Christian how to get inspired about the year and take charge of his life. The second guest in the lineup is award winning writer and stand up comedian Josh Gondelman. He was a former writer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and currently write for the new late night show on Showtime with Desus and Mero. What Christian and Shonali find most interesting about Josh is that he is from Boston, has no accent AND was a former preschool teacher. 2019 is going to be a big one for Josh. He just recorded a one hour comedy live special and has written a new book "Nice Try - Story of Best Intentions and Mixed Results" to come out this year. Oh and Desus and Mero's show debuts on February 21st. Get It Off Your Chest with audience member Megan Fitzpatrick. She comes forth with martini in hand. Our problems stem mostly from the weather and inconsiderate people. Whew, don't you feel better. Our last guest is the amazing multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter punk rock blues musician Shilpa Ray. Wow. Shonali bonds with Shilpa on being Bengali Female Desis who play rock n' roll. Unbelievably she had a music pageant dad who had to force her to practice her harmonium and vocals at a young age. Believably he also still wants her to go to med school. Shilpa says she is actually shy which is shocking. Shilpa kindly answers Christian's template musician question beautifully. Please go see Shilpa play live at El Cortez on February 8th with James Chance to find out why people call her god. Shilpa performs two songs live on piano in the Red Room, 1) Same Sociopath and 2). Cry For the Cameras Enjoy! Happy New Year! Also special thanks to Matt Hunziker for coming in a crushing it as Mitch the Enthusiasm Coach!

Woodworking In America 2012 isn't until mid-October, but it doesn't hurt to start planning now if you'll be attending. I have it on good authority there's still plenty of openings for woodworkers to sign up, and attend what has become a perennial destination for anyone passionate about woodworking. This year's conference has a little twist to it. Rather than one big weekend, the folks at Popular Woodworking Magazine have taken a gamble and are offering two full weekends of some of the best woodworking lectures, vendors and get-togethers modern woodworkers have ever known. For the past few years, attendees and those who wanted to be attendees, have been asking for Woodworking in America to travel west of the Mississippi river. This year they're doing just that by holding the first of the two weekends in Pasadena, California. And as everyone knows, out west they do things they're own unique way. The West Coast WIA conference will be no different! With speakers and events specifically planned for the first of the 2012 conferences you'll find seminars and a few vendors you won't find any where else. But not to be outdone though, the 2012 Midwest WIA conference promises to be equally amazing and filled with all the best speakers, vendors, events and of course all the things we've come to expect from Woodworking In Americas in the past. For more information, visit the Woodworking In America website where you'll find everything you need for both venues. And if that still doesn't answer all your questions you can also email Megan Fitzpatrick Megan.Fitzpatrick@fwmedia.com (or any of the Popular Woodworking Editors) to get information on both the event and anything woodworking related. ...Of course listening to today's episode isn't a bad idea either!
