The Federal Budget attempts to tackle everything from inflation and housing to long-term budget repair, but how much will it really change the outlook for the Australian economy? Host Mandy Drury speaks with CommBank Chief Economist Luke Yeaman and Head of Market Strategy & Rates Research Adam Donaldson about the key measures in this year’s Budget and whether the Government struck the right balance between spending, savings and reform. From the impact on inflation and interest rates to the long-term path for deficits, debt and Australia’s economic resilience, they unpack what the Budget means for households, businesses and the broader economy. Luke explains the major housing tax changes, including the end of negative gearing and reforms to capital gains tax, and what they could mean for home prices and affordability. Adam also discusses what the improved fiscal outlook means for Australia’s AAA credit rating, bond issuance and state budgets. Plus, CommBank’s Associate International Economist & Currency Strategist Samara Hammoud shares the key focuses for markets this week. They then dive into the London Marathon, breaking down the shock of two men going under two hours and multiple athletes dipping under the previous world record, while many sub-2:20 runners struggled late in tough conditions. They unpack how weather, pacing, and race dynamics can completely shift outcomes across the field. They also analyze the women's race and the context around women-only world records, before getting into prize money, sponsorship dynamics, and how negotiations can shape race execution. The conversation moves into broader topics like influencer narratives around heart rate training and fueling, questioning what's real versus what's being pushed, while highlighting standout performances including Ireland's Peter Lynch running 2:06:08 for a national record and Vinny Morey's surprise 2:05:54 debut at Glass City. In this episode, we kick things off by examining a puzzling phenomenon in cross-border logistics where capacity appears plentiful on paper but remains brutally tight in practice. According to Uber Freight's senior vice president overseeing cross-border operations, the real constraint isn't a lack of drivers overall but rather a critical shortage of drivers who meet increasingly stringent compliance and security standards. With northbound demand into the U.S. running two to three times higher than southbound flows and uncertainty around the upcoming USMCA review slowing nearshoring investment, carriers are struggling to reposition equipment fast enough to keep pace with U.S.-bound freight. Shifting gears to the rails, we examine how rail technology giant Wabtec delivered a powerful start to 2026 with solid execution across both its freight and transit divisions. First quarter revenue grew 13% to $2.95 billion while adjusted earnings per share surged 18.9% to $2.71, driven by a 52.5% jump in equipment sales from higher locomotive deliveries and a remarkable 75.7% increase in digital sales fueled by strategic acquisitions. On the strength of these results, Wabtec raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance by 20 cents at the midpoint, projecting growth of 16.5% for 2026. Finally, we unpack the contrasting fortunes at a major Canadian transportation company where TFI International's Truckload sector improved while its LTL division struggled in the first quarter. TFI handily beat Wall Street expectations with non-GAAP earnings per share of 69 cents—8 cents above consensus—as its Truckload segment posted a 14.32% jump in operating income and adjusted EBITDA growth exceeding 4%. However, the less-than-truckload division saw its combined operating ratio deteriorate 220 basis points to 95.3% and operating income decline 35.12%. Despite the mixed performance, management issued strong second quarter guidance, projecting adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.50 to $1.60—more than double the first quarter result. #596: Why Do Omega-3 Trials Show Mixed Results?

Sigma Nutrition Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2026 66:11

Omega-3 fatty acids (particularly EPA and DHA) have a long history in nutrition and cardiovascular medicine, yet the clinical trial literature is often perceived as inconsistent. This episode examines why some randomized trials show clear benefit while others show null or mixed findings, and how differences in trial design, dose, population risk, and outcome selection can materially change what we observe. A key theme is separating (1) the persistent cultural narratives around omega-3s (including origin stories that do not hold up well to modern evidence) from (2) the more precise, mechanistic and clinical questions about where supplemental EPA/DHA may reduce cardiovascular risk. The discussion focuses heavily on understanding heterogeneity: why "omega-3 supplementation" is not a single, uniform exposure, and why subgroup patterns (e.g., secondary prevention, higher baseline triglycerides, and higher doses) may explain much of the apparent conflict in the evidence. Note: This discussion is taken from a previous episode of the podcast. The audio has been remastered and improved, and now study notes and full transcript are available. Live at 5 p.m., Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the Steelers running game's performance in the first two preseason games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What should we make of Kaleb Johnson's mixed results over the past couple of weeks as he looks to assert himself in the backfield next to names like Kenneth Gainwell and Jaylen Warren? Are offensive linemen including Broderick Jones, Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick and Troy Fautanu showing enough progress in Arthur Smith's offense for the running game to work consistently? And how might Aaron Rodgers under center change things compared to backups Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson? Paul tackles those questions and also weighs in on the Pirates' weekend series loss against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Canadian law meant to support local journalism brings mixed results

A bill in the Oregon Legislature would set up a structure for social media companies to compensate local news producers whose content is shared on those sites. SB 686 is based in part on bills in California and New Jersey, as well as a law that recently went into effect in Canada. It was meant for the largest social media companies to compensate local news media organizations whose content is shared on the platforms — thus supporting news outlets, many which have seen advertising revenues plummet. But the law has had some unintended consequences, including Meta simply deciding not to allow news to be shared at all in Canada.  Joining us to talk about the law's intentions, its unintended consequences and possible solutions is Ryan Adam, formerly the vice president of government and public relationships for the Toronto Star. He led efforts to pass the country’s Online News Act, also known as the C-18 law, and testified in Salem in April about Canada’s law.  OPB is among the news media organizations that testified in support of the Oregon bill.

Is this considered progress or do we need to see more from his development? The bullpen remains a touchy subject, too, as Chris Roycroft is struggling with command and falling short to this point of developing into the reliable weapon that Oliver Marmol could use out of him.Offensively, this was a disappointing one for the Redbirds, but the newest Cardinal Yohel Pozo at least gave one awesome highlight and an epic bat flip!Follow this podcast feed for daily Cardinals coverage all year long!
