Shilpa Ray is a singer, songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist based in Queens, NY. She has been recording, releasing and touring on records in various incarnations from 2006 to the present. Her most recent release, Portrait Of A Lady (via Northern Spy Records) is her most personal, direct record to date, and delivers a jarring honesty that keeps the listener engrossed in the wide batch of sonic and lyrical intensity. In this episode Shilpa tells us why her first instrument was a harmonium, how The Side Walk Cafe's nurturing environment help her get her start in live performance and why drums and time keeping are so important to her. She tells us how the combination of a sound check with Andrew Bird and an image of Nan Golden re-illuminated the importance of art in her life and inspired her to write a record focused on her own personal experiences. We learn who the bootlickers are in the song Bootlickers Of The Patriarchy, she tells us a wild tour story thank involves Rick James's gravestone and we hear a couple tunes. From Coma To Catharsis is the second full exploratory mission in the current five-piece incarnation of NYC/NJ-based instrumental ensemble, The Royal Arctic Institute. It's the sequel to last year's From Catnap To Coma, and like its predecessor, the new mini-album was recorded and produced by James McNew (Yo La Tengo) in the historic Neumann Leather Factory in Hoboken, New Jersey. From Coma To Catharsis is being released February 4th, 2023 by Already Dead Tapes and Records and will be available on cassette (duh!), as a paid download, and on streaming platforms. Later in the year, the band hopes to release both titles on vinyl. At present, The Royal Arctic Institute comprises five musicians who have played extensively with other groups and/or as backing/session musicians:  drummer Lyle Hysen (Das Damen, Arthur Lee, The Misguided), guitarists John Leon (Roky Erickson, Summer Wardrobe, Abra Moore) and Lynn Wright (And The Wiremen, Bee And Flower, Shilpa Ray), bassist David Motamed (Das Damen, Two Dollar Guitar, Arthur Lee, Townes Van Zandt), and keyboardist Carl Baggaley (Headbrain, Gramercy Arms).  What are the first things you would feel coming out of a coma? Would it be cathartic, a full release of all your emotions? What would that sound like? From Coma To Catharsis tries to capture that auditory experience replacing the steadfast emotions expressed on From Catnap to Coma with the sounds of dreaming, then awakenings. All the pieces were created communally, deconstructing then reconstructing material mainly composed by guitarist John Leon with a couple written by other band members. McNew recorded the band in a live setting with no digital magic and minimal overdubs except for pedal steel work by John.  This record also highlights the band's musical development after a further year of playing together. This includes songwriting contributions by Dave (“Angleman's Lament”), and Lynn (“The Elated World”) as well as more input from Carl. “This is the third record I've played on,” explains Baggaley, “and on this one we really broke the songs down to the bones. I was able to bring in new influences like King Crimson-style mellotron and electric piano inspired by the late Billy Preston performances during the recording of the Beatles' Let It Be album.” Besotted by 2021's Beatles documentary series stemming from those sessions, Lyle draped his drums in tea- towels ala Ringo for the song “Passover Bucket.” Regarding that same title, John says, “During the COVID lockdown, everyone's kids were home and parents were scrambling and grasping at straws to entertain them. A Jewish friend of mine decided to celebrate Easter with her children to give them something to do. They were fascinated by the concept of Easter baskets. The following year, instead of Easter baskets, the children were given Passover Buckets to keep them quiet.”  From Coma To Catharsis is, sadly, guitarist Lynn Wright's last work with the band as a full member as he's recently relocated to Berlin to further his career in music and fine dining. The band will continue to play shows and record with Lynn when possible, but perhaps as the past two years have shown us, who knows if everything will be cathartic, or just a return to a coma.         John's Info https://www.theroyalarctic.com/new-page-2

In today's episode, Izzy catches up with Brooklyn-based punk rocker and poet Shilpa Ray. Izzy and Shilpa discuss her upbringing in a Bengali family in New Jersey, being mentored by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, her latest album 'Portrait of a Lady,' and why she believes counter-cultural anarchy was a sham for all the women involved in the movement. ✨ MORE ABOUT SHILPA RAY ✨Shilpa Ray is a self-described "fire-breathing cyclops ripping off Nina Simone ripping off Screamin' Jay Hawkins ripping off the devil." Combining punk rock with glam, gothic rockabilly, and blues, her music is unabashedly direct and politically charged. Her latest album 'Portrait of a Lady,' tackles this directness head-on with song titles like "Cry for the Cameras," "Charm School for Damaged Boys," and "Manic Pixie Dream Cunt." She is currently on tour in Europe. ✨ KEEP UP TO DATE WITH SHILPA RAY ✨Web: https://www.shilparay.netInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/shilparayofficial/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shilpa.ray.9Twitter: https://twitter.com/shilparayisgodBandcamp: https://shilparay.bandcamp.com/musicSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2aBdKyqYmbMAxMFCujJSqw?si=zx_E41niSfmjQGRito1cUQ✨ CONNECT WITH IZZY ✨YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv6SBgiYCpYbx9BOYNefkIgWebsite: https://izzyshutup.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/Twitter: https://twitter.com/missannthropei

Shilpa Ray released her album Teenage and Torture in 2011 on Knitting Factory Records and found her a fan in Nick Cave who started telling music journalists she was a favorit. Cave brought her on tour as support and recorded the song Pirate Jenny with her. Then Cave hired Shilpa to sing backup on his Bad Seeds tour. Shilpa has also served as main support for Man Man and Acid Mother's Temple as well as the opening act for Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, and A Place to Bury Strangers. Shilpa just released her new album Portrait of a Lady via Northern Spy.

The wonderfully twisted, self-possessed, wry, leather jacket-armored dark humored queen of the downtown night, Shilpa Ray, survived working the door at the Lower East Side / New York City bar Pianos. And she's turned that harsh reality into an album of cutting commentary. On the 2017 record Door Girl, Shilpa Ray plays with throwback “girl group” sounds – except she's got backing guy vocals and crisp production. Her songs are full of acerbic observations on desperate people, some quite personal - "Manhattanoid Creepazoids," "Revelations of a Stamp Monkey," and "Rockaway Blues"; the portraits are far from pretty, and definitely no longer glittering, with a blaze-of-lights-at-closing-time-feel delivered in her singular brassy croon and growl. Shilpa Ray joins us, (sans harmonium), in the studio to play some of these songs. (Archives, 2017.)

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Shilpa Ray over Zoom video! Singer-songwriter Shilpa Ray drops evocative new single “Heteronormative Horseshit Blues.”   As with this spring’s “Manic Pixie Dream Cunt” Shilpa teamed with fellow New Yorker, renowned filmmaker Amos Poe to make a video for the track.  Shilpa shares, “Straight culture is in dire need of a reform/defund/abolishment discussion.  I wrote this song from my experiences of being stuck in an abusive relationship during my mid to late 20s, only to come to the realization that the non abusive ones weren’t that much better in terms of power dynamics and conforming gender roles. This song was inspired by Billy Idol’s, ‘Eyes Without A Face’ sans awkward rap section.  I wanted to create a sharp contrast between the nature of the lyrics said by a defeated character against a hazy overtly romantic soundscape.  Kind of like the 80’s doing the 50’s.The video is another collaboration with director Amos Poe with Ebru Yildiz on camera. It  feature two overblown heteronormative characters, Doris Daydream and Danny LeDouche, played and developed by me.”  Watch Heteronormative Horseshit Blues here: “Manic Pixie Dream Cunt” was released to critical acclaim including landing on Brooklyn Vegan’s “Songs We Like This Month” list.  In the UK Louder Than War said, “‘Manic Pixie Dream Cunt’ is an in your face smash and grab affair that leaves you a  little dazed and disorientated. But as you stagger from the blow you just want to hit repeat."  The single marked the first bit of music Shilpa has released since her 2017 album Door Girl.  She is based in Brooklyn and her voice - singular in modern popular music because of its radiant imperfection - takes neither prisoners nor guff as it offers up continuous caustic commentary on the human condition.  Hers are observations gleaned from endless nights watching people in their natural habitat. Shilpa began releasing music in 2006 and a few years later formed the band Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers. The band caught the attention of music critics around the world and the band released 2 albums before Shilpa returned to releasing music under her own name.We want to hear from you! We start out 2019 with an explosion not a bang. Our guests are award-winning investigative journalist May Jeong, award-winning writer/stand up comedian Josh Gondelman and singular blues punk rock n’ roll bad ass musician Shilpa Ray. Along with special surprise guest Mitch The Enthusiasm Coach and Megan Fitzpatrick Gets It Off Her Chest. Christian and Shonali catch up on the holidays, mom talk, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Schulz' signature and the opportunity which 2019 will hopefully bring. Their first guest is investigative journalist May Jeong.  May is a wunderkind.  She's spent years living in Afghanistan covering the war and received high accolades for reporting from there.  We discuss her courage, smarts and as she calls it being "young and dumb" in terms of saying yes to every opportunity to get the real story.  Look for her upcoming work in the New Yorker regarding another explosive ground breaking story. Shonali's new 2019 positive attitude is due to the new man in her life, Mitch The Enthusiasm Coach.  Mitch who also wears two headbands at one time shows Christian how to get inspired about the year and take charge of his life.   The second guest in the lineup is award winning writer and stand up comedian Josh Gondelman.  He was a former writer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and currently write for the new late night show on Showtime with Desus and Mero.  What Christian and Shonali find most interesting about Josh is that he is from Boston, has no accent AND was a former preschool teacher. 2019 is going to be a big one for Josh.  He just recorded a one hour comedy live special and has written a new book "Nice Try - Story of Best Intentions and Mixed Results" to come out this year. Oh and Desus and Mero's show debuts on February 21st.  Get It Off Your Chest with audience member Megan Fitzpatrick.  She comes forth with martini in hand.  Our problems stem mostly from the weather and inconsiderate people.  Whew, don't you feel better.  Our last guest is the amazing multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter punk rock blues musician Shilpa Ray.  Wow.  Shonali bonds with Shilpa on being Bengali Female Desis who play rock n' roll.  Unbelievably she had a music pageant dad who had to force her to practice her harmonium and vocals at a young age.  Believably he also still wants her to go to med school.  Shilpa says she is actually shy which is shocking.  Shilpa kindly answers Christian's template musician question beautifully.  Please go see Shilpa play live at El Cortez on February 8th with James Chance to find out why people call her god. Shilpa performs two songs live on piano in the Red Room, 1) Same Sociopath and 2). Cry For the Cameras  Enjoy!  Happy New Year! Also special thanks to Matt Hunziker for coming in a crushing it as Mitch the Enthusiasm Coach!

For more than a decade, Brooklyn singer-songwriter Shilpa Ray has been somewhat of a hidden gem of New York's rock scene.   Her soulful, jazzy vocals juxtaposed against garage and punk rock riffs conjures the work of Ella Fitzgerald, Blondie, The Cramps and The New York Dolls, to name a few.   We sat down with Shilpa to discuss her latest record Door Girl, smuggling the CDs of The Velvet Underground and The Doors in-between the pages of library books as a teenager, and the crucial advice she got from Nick Cave.

Welcome to our 70th Episode! We connected with the incredible song-writer, singer/performer Shilpa Ray on a chilled night in Brooklyn, NY. Shilpa and I are both 1st generation children of immigrants to the U.S., her story is one she tells with both aplomb and humility. After gigging the open-mic circuit of the East Village's Sidewalk Cafe, Shilpa's earlier works would be passed along to the luminary Nick Cave, who'd help in releasing 2013's 'It's All Self Fellatio'. Last year's full-length 'Door Girl' is where we connect so we dig our heels into the self-reflection of that great project and much much more. This will definitely be a treat for Shilpa fans and hopefully introduce folks that may not be hip to her music! Don't for get to subscribe where-ever you listen to podcasts. The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

This is called the Unioncast because I have had a really bad habit of working into the evenings recently, as well as all bloody weekend, and I am starting to thing I need a union representative to protect me from my own boss. Who, rather sadly, happens to be me. Stand up against myself for the downtrodden worker! I had no idea what I was going to play this week, but it turned into a surprisingly good playlist, including personal highlights from SWF and the awesome new EP by Shilpa Ray. Right, enough blabbering about this one, I am off up to the Pleasance to see Rob St. John, Adam Stafford and Ian Humberstone. It's an amazing venue, so I am really looking forward to it. And there's the mega double-blowout label showcase next week as well, so all sorts of musicfuns for you to take advantage of. 01. Lambchop - Hey, Where's Your Girl (00.22)02.
