The climate pact achieved at COP26 was woefully inadequate. We could be in for over four degrees Fahrenheit of warming this century over pre-industrial temperatures, and some scenarios would put us closer to eight degrees. In this episode, Paul Sutton shares his observations from Glasgow, and we get assessments from a few other noted experts. Policymakers are not willing to embrace any climate actions that give up economic growth, but economic growth virtually guarantees climate disaster. The bottom line: only drastic policy and behavior changes will avoid a very bleak future. Sutton is a Professor in the Department of Geography & the Environment at the University of Denver. He served as an official delegate for the American Association of Geographers (AAG) at the COP26 UN Climate Summit in Glasgow in early November of 2021. He is not speaking for the AAG in this episode. One interesting class Paul teaches is Envisioning Utopia Through the Lens of a Wellbeing Economy. House, Professor of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences with the University of Manitoba, Lindsey Boyd, Technologist of Pulse Science Cluster, Cereals Canada, and Elaine Sopiwnyk, Vice-President Technical Services, Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI). The team discusses their research into how processing strategies are being developed for innovative commercially-ready pulse ingredients, and how these processes can achieve pulse flour and protein specifications, with the required functionality and nutritional profiles needed for a wide range of applications like pasta, soups, dips and sauces, pan breads, meat binders, and meat alternatives. The outcomes of this work will result in important technical information for food manufacturers and is a key component in the Canadian pulse industry's goal to diversify and create new markets and new uses for 25% of Canadian pulses by 2025, strengthening the demand for pulse ingredients and growers' crops into high value markets. “We need to end the game of Monopoly and start playing the game of sustainability – recognizing the limitations of the planet and building our systems to live within those.” Those are the wise words of Mike Nickerson, author of Life, Money & Illusion: Living on Earth as If We Want to Stay. In this episode Mike explains why he is promoting the mantra, “more fun, less stuff.” We're in a “tailspin consumerist debacle,” according to Mike, and he's quite sure we need to be “liberated from the materialist cult.” Our discussion includes the American Dream, the voluntary simplicity movement and the role of advertising in our overconsumption. “We could be having so much fun that there just isn't time to consume resources on a quantity, or produce waste on a quantity that would be problematic for the planet,” according Mike Nickerson. He shares his ideas about how enjoyable it could be to make the cultural shift necessary for human civilization to be sustainable. Mike Nickerson has spent his career advancing sustainability. In the 1970s he founded and co-directed the Institute for the Study of Cultural Evolution. Today he leads the Sustainability Project/7th Generation Initiative in Canada, a non-profit organization that collects, studies, develops and teaches ideas, information, technologies and customs that promote green values and lead toward a sustainable future. Nickerson wrote legislation to launch measurement of a Genuine Progress Index in Canada. The Canadian government never followed through, but an independent Canadian Index of Wellbeing was eventually developed. His books include Change the World I Want to Stay On; Planning for Seven Generations: Guideposts for a Sustainable Future; and Life, Money and Illusion. More recently Mike has been helping to build the Lanark Eco-Village in Ontario, Canada. This conversation was recorded in 2008, but is being shared now for the first time.
