In this episode of Cities 1.5, David and his guests from countries on opposite sides of the equator, South Africa and Scotland, explore how urban initiatives are transforming local communities through holistic climate action and wellbeing practices. Linear economic systems - previously the global status quo - have been proven time and again to be ineffective at prioritizing wellbeing for all…especially when we compare them with circular models that emphasize restoration. Grassroots projects like Scotland's Love Letham and Johannesburg's Makers Valley, which focus on sustainable development, community engagement, and empowerment naturally emphasize the importance of inclusivity, indigenous values, and collective action in addressing socioeconomic and environmental challenges. Our expert guests in this episode demonstrate how in both the Global South and North, participatory decision-making and community-driven projects can tackle poverty, improve health, and enhance urban resilience by integrating climate and anti-poverty policies.Image Credit: Photo by Jeswin Thomas @Unsplash Featured guests:Thobile Chittenden is Network Co-Lead at the Wellbeing Economy Alliance and the CEO of the Makers Valley Partnership in Johannesburg, South Africa.Hollie Irvine is the Project Lead of Love Letham in Perth, Scotland - one of four Wellbeing Economy pilot city projects from the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll).LinksLessons in Wellbeing Economics: Engaging local communities to bring Academic Principles into Urban Practice - Episode 12, Season 3, Cities 1.5 Policy Design for a Wellbeing Economy - Lessons from Four City Pilots - The Journal of City Climate Policy & Economy, Volume 2 Issue 2, January 2024Wellbeing Economy AllianceMakers Valley A New Story Unfolds - Poem by Thobile ChittendenLove Letham Project - Perth, ScotlandOfficial child poverty statistics - Child Poverty Action Group (Scotland)New report shows what Letham's children need to thrive - Love Letham websiteIf you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website: https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/Cities 1.5 is a podcast by University of Toronto Press and is produced in association with the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy. Our podcast, SystemShift, returns for a second season where we look beyond the problems of our economic system and take you on a quest to piece together what a wellbeing economy could look like and how we can get there. We'll delve into the shadows to reveal the myths and disinformation that shroud our understanding of the current failing economic and financial systems that drive the exploitation of people and the planet.Ordinary people in many countries are feeling besieged by a multiplicity of crises - including a cost-of-living crisis that has many of them focusing on their immediate needs, leaving them with reduced mental space to grapple with long-term existential threats such as climate change. It's this entanglement of survival and need for foresight that can leave many people feeling paralysed—overwhelmed by the juxtaposition of today's struggles and the looming environmental catastrophe. The second season will be released on Friday, February 2nd, with a new episode coming out on a weekly basis.SystemShift comes from Greenpeace Nordic and is hosted by Greenpeace Sweden campaigner, Carl Schlyter, and produced by Alexia Fridén, with additional support from Zane Ford, Christian Aslund and Attila Kulcsár. Each supply chain involves a variety of stakeholders from farmers, processors, distributors, retailers and consumers that operate at local, provincial, national and even international levels”  https://www.ivey.uwo.ca/sustainability/for-researchers/the-agri-food-system/#:~:text=The%20agri%2Dfood%20system%20spans,national%20and%20even%20international%20levels.    Doughnut Economics  “Doughnut Economics proposes an economic mindset that's fit for our times. It's not a set of policies and institutions, but rather a way of thinking to bring about the regenerative and distributive dynamics that this century calls for. Drawing on insights from diverse schools of economic thought - including ecological, feminist, institutional, behavioural and complexity economics - it sets out seven ways to think like a 21st century economist in order to transform economies, local to global.  The starting point of Doughnut Economics is to change the goal from endless GDP growth to thriving in the Doughnut. At the same time, see the big picture by recognising that the economy is embedded within, and dependent upon, society and the living world.”  https://doughnuteconomics.org/about-doughnut-economics    Economic Growth  “An economy grows when it has the capacity to produce more. Production is based on how much capital, labor, natural resources, and technology it has to produce. Policies that encourage the accumulation of any of these leads to economic growth.”  https://www.khanacademy.org/economics-finance-domain/ap-macroeconomics/ap-long-run-consequences-of-stabilization-policies/economic-growth/a/lesson-summary-economic-growth    Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI)   “Described by its authors, the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) provides citizens and policymakers fruitful insight by recognizing economic activity that diminishes both natural and social capital. Further, the GPI is designed to measure sustainable economic welfare rather than economic activity alone. To accomplish this, the GPI uses three simple underlying principles for its methodology:  account for income inequality,  include non-market benefits that are not included in Gross Domestic Product, and  identify and deduct bads such as environmental degradation, human health effects, and loss of leisure time.  The GPI developers identified 26 indicators, then populate them with verifiable data. As one example, the pure economic activity stemming from the explosive growth of urban sprawl contributes greatly to the GDP. Yet, along with sprawl come non-economic costs such as increased commuting time, increased traffic congestion, land use conversion, and automobile impacts. In short, just because we are exchanging money within an economy does not necessarily mean that we are sustainable or prosperous.”  https://dnr.maryland.gov/mdgpi/Pages/what-is-the-GPI.aspx    Gross Domestic Product (GDP) “GDP measures the monetary value of final goods and services—that is, those that are bought by the final user—produced in a country in a given period of time (say a quarter or a year). It counts all of the output generated within the borders of a country. GDP is composed of goods and services produced for sale in the market and also includes some nonmarket production, such as defense or education services provided by the government.”  https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/fandd/issues/Series/Back-to-Basics/gross-domestic-product-GDP    Migrant Labour Issues  “Shifts in demographic and economic patterns are pushing workers to cross borders for jobs in ever increasing numbers. Migrants often leave their home communities due to extreme poverty and face exploitation as they search for work in unfamiliar terrain. They are commonly subject to subcontracting schemes and precarious jobs in the informal economy. They make vital economic contributions to both their host countries and countries of origin, but confront a dire lack of workplace protection and social security.”  https://laborrights.org/issues/migrant-labor    Planetary Boundaries  “The planetary boundaries concept presents a set of nine planetary boundaries within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive for generations to come.   Crossing boundaries increases the risk of generating large-scale abrupt or irreversible environmental changes. Drastic changes will not necessarily happen overnight, but together the boundaries mark a critical threshold for increasing risks to people and the ecosystems we are part of.  Boundaries are interrelated processes within the complex biophysical Earth system. This means that a global focus on climate change alone is not sufficient for increased sustainability. Instead, understanding the interplay of boundaries, especially climate, and loss of biodiversity, is key in science and practice.”  https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries/the-nine-planetary-boundaries.html    Canada's Quality of Life Framework  “The Quality of Life Framework for Canada brings together data for approximately 85 key indicators on the well-being of people in Canada. The Framework enables the federal government to identify future policy priorities and to build on previous actions to improve evidence-based decision making and budgeting.  “The Quality of Life Framework for Canada is organized into domains, each of which includes a number of indicators, as shown on the Quality of Life Framework for Canada infosheet. These domains were selected based on evidence of the determinants of well-being to reflect what matters most for quality of life in Canada: prosperity, health, society, the environment and good governance. In addition, the indicators of life satisfaction and sense of meaning and purpose are included as overall measures of quality of life.”  https://www160.statcan.gc.ca/index-eng.htm     Well-Being Economy  “A Wellbeing Economy is an economy designed to serve people and the planet, not the other way around. Rather than treating economic growth as an end in and of itself and pursuing it at all costs, a Wellbeing Economy puts our human and planetary needs at the centre of its activities, ensuring that these needs are all equally met, by default”  https://weall.org/what-is-wellbeing-economy    Discussion Questions  An increase in GDP is often assumed to be positive for society overall. Does this episode change your assumptions about growth?    Naomi shared some of the limitations of using GDP as a measure of well-being in the episode. What are some other examples of these types of limitations? What does GDP overlook?   How might alternatives like the “Canadian Index of Wellbeing” and “A Quality of Life Framework for Canada” help address some of the shortcomings of pursuing economic growth at all costs?    Can you imagine how your local food system might look differently if we used quality of life indicators (like public and environmental health impacts) as the primary motivators for food production and distribution?   In many ways, our current economic system forces governments to pursue economic growth (sustaining employment, repaying debt, etc.). What changes to our economic system can allow governments to pursue wellbeing over economic growth? Explore the additional resources in the show notes for more information.

In this episode, Dr Katherine Trebeck takes listeners into a deep conversation asking why our economy is not serving enough people and takes a hard look at the way our economic system operates through a public health lens. Katherine is a political economist, founder of the Wellbeing Economic Alliance, and describes herself as a freelance advocate for a more humane economy. Katherine casts a net of ideas around the distribution, or maldistribution, of wealth, resources, and power and how this impacts individuals, communities, and the planet, with a profound impact on health inequalities. Despite these flaws, there are opportunities for connection across areas that have traditionally been siloed and a move toward a wellbeing approach, one designed to deliver what people and the planet need. For example, improved levels of exercise and mental health have connections with improved liveability and public transport, and these arenas have co-benefits for us as humans living in the environment, so co-benefits for the environment as well. With a fascination for understanding the root causes of complex issues, Katherine compels audiences to look upstream and stay curious and attentive to the connections. She recommends channeling your inner three-year-old, asking but why, but why, why, and why, until we can get to the root cause, venturing beyond symptom-by-symptom, problem-by-problem, and crisis-to-crisis solutions.

As Bonnie also highlights in her recent article on how Scotland can transform its economy so its fit for the future “Measuring businesses according to profit and productivity alone can easily justify extractive relationships with workers and natural resources. The goal of prosperity can encourage healthier businesses that consider their connection to their staff and wider operating environment. What will the characteristics of successful innovators and entrepreneurs be in a wellbeing economy? In this lecture, we look at how the Wellbeing Economy is shaped by the co-creation of value through co-design and co-production processes, and how this promises to make success look very different from what we've been used to. This lecture will challenge what success looks like and give examples from Kenya, Grenada, London and Lebanon.A lecture by Jacqueline McGladeThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/innovators-wellbeingGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. One of my favorite examples towards a Wellbeing Economy is Wales. Because they not only developed seven wellbeing goals, but they really thought a lot about how does this translate into a different form of governance and way of working? So they have these five principles for how they want to work together. And one is taking a long-term perspective? So not just constantly thinking about the short-term crises, but really the long term goals. Focusing on prevention? So as we were saying earlier, how do we prevent the economic, or environmental, or social crises from starting in the first place? By getting the economy to do more of the heavy lifting in the first place. How do we support greater integration, breaking down silos, and supporting more collaboration. Not only across governments agencies, but with society at large. And fostering and supporting greater engagement by people. And with these principles in mind, they realized that that needed to also translate into how they were measuring their wellbeing goals. So I love that they put a big emphasis here on effective communication. So they wanted to make sure that any indicator that was chosen could be immediately grasped the public. That they could intuitively understand why that indicator related to one of the goals or multiple goals that they have identified is important for their society.(...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

The climate pact achieved at COP26 was woefully inadequate. We could be in for over four degrees Fahrenheit of warming this century over pre-industrial temperatures, and some scenarios would put us closer to eight degrees. In this episode, Paul Sutton shares his observations from Glasgow, and we get assessments from a few other noted experts. Policymakers are not willing to embrace any climate actions that give up economic growth, but economic growth virtually guarantees climate disaster. The bottom line: only drastic policy and behavior changes will avoid a very bleak future. Sutton is a Professor in the Department of Geography & the Environment at the University of Denver. Wellbeing is something we're all a lot more in tune with today. And there is a growing number of people who support the idea of a well-being economy - one that promotes looking after individuals and the environment. To discuss the (not so new) idea, Ariane Burgess, Green MSP for the Highlands and Islands Region, joins host Drew Hendry MP. Much of today's economic measures are focused on tracking GDP and pursuing a "growth at any cost" model. But, while, of course, GDP is necessary to take into account, it should not be considered the be-all and end-all of how well a country is performing. Bobby Kennedy said in 1968, during his presidential campaign, "GDP measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile". So, the idea of GDP not being the sole measure of a national economy is hardly a new one. Schemes such as a 4-day working week are proposed in Scotland. With the most obvious of advantages being an increase in individuals' wellbeing, we also see economic benefits too. So, it's a win-win. People are more productive when they are happier and looked after. A wellbeing economy is not just for people though. The philosophy also encompasses green initiatives. A thriving natural environment promotes sustainable economic growth as well as increased happiness in citizens. Listen to all of the above and much more on this fascinating episode of Scotland's Choice. For more of Ariane's work, click here. Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.

Young people aged 16+ will be able to vote in Wales for the first time in the Senedd Elections this year. So we spoke to young people from across Wales about politics, what's important to them, and what they value most. We heard from a passionate and inspiring group of young people from a range of backgrounds, who shared their own opinions and talked about what they're already doing to make a difference - especially on climate and equalities. This will be essential listening for anyone that's interested in how to engage more young people in politics, and in how we can build a Wellbeing Economy here in Wales.

Here is Episode Nine. Our question this time was slightly adapted from one sent in by subscriber Pamela Barnes. As the world attempts to claw its way back from the COVID19 pandemic, and as opinion polls show an overwhelming support for not ‘going back' to how things were before, people are increasingly discussing and exploring new models for an economy that better needs the needs of the population as a whole. One of those key ideas is that of a Wellbeing Economy, an economy that delivers both human and ecological wellbeing.   Please consider supporting the podcast by visiting www.patreon.com/fromwhatiftowhatnext and becoming a patron.

Episode #52: Katherine Trebeck Katherine Trebeck is one of the co-founders of the international Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEALL) and his headquartered in Glasgow Scotland. https://wellbeingeconomy.org/ Katherine and I discuss the opportunities for building new economies of well-being around the world whether in her home in Scotland, Canada, New Zealand, Iceland and now Amsterdam. The Covid-19 situation has challenged every nation to consider an alternative economic system that focuses more on building back better where better is defined more in terms of improving the conditions of well-being for all rather than purely maximizing GDP or economic growth. Katherine is the Policy and Knowledge lead at the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, which works to amplify the work of others in the movement for a wellbeing economy. Her book The Economics of Arrival co-authored with Jeremy Williams, explores a new mantra for development that shifts attention from growth to quality and distribution of economic activity as we seek to 'make ourselves at home' in a wealthy world. Before her current role, Katherine was Policy and Advocacy Manager for Oxfam's UK Programme, and prior to this, she led research and policy for Oxfam's Scotland office. Here she developed Oxfam's Humankind Index, a measure of Scotland's real prosperity developed through wide-ranging community consultation. She has been a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow where her work included analysis of community development, corporate social responsibility and social housing. Katherine has a PhD in political science from The Australian National University, where her thesis considered techniques utilised by Aboriginal communities to compel mining companies to recognise and respond to community demands. She is an Honorary Professor at the University of the West of Scotland, Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-anielski/message

This special extra to episode #048 features Katherine Trebeck, Mike Salvaris & Carol Innes, in live conversation with a full room at The Platform in Perth last month, launching Katherine's new book ‘The Economics of Arrival: Ideas for a grown up economy'. We pick up the conversation on the topic of power, before opening up to a brilliant dialogue with the audience, and a series of resounding closing sentiments from each speaker. We explore the Wellbeing Economy Governments alliance, some extraordinary outcomes from the work Carol has been involved in, and a host of other positive developments around the world. The questions are asked, how can a more widespread transition to wellbeing economies take place? To what extent are people just going ahead and doing it? What part might a universal basic income play? What about debt and money more broadly? And how do we go about democratic reinvention, both within our institutions, and in how we engage with each other in daily life? Title slide pic: Anthony James. Featuring UK-based Dr Katherine Trebeck, a central figure in the global Wellbeing Economy Alliance, and co-author of the new book ‘The Economics of Arrival: Ideas for a grown up economy'. With special guests Mike Salvaris, director of the Australian National Development Index, and global leader in the development of wellbeing measures; and Carol Innes, local Whadjak Noongar Traditional Owner and co-chair of Reconciliation WA, successfully engaging in shifting economic development frameworks locally. All in conversation with Anthony James. Recorded live in conversation with a full room at The Platform in Perth, a few days after the global climate strike and as the UN Climate Action Summit began. This event launched Katherine's book, as part of a national tour around Australia in collaboration with the New Economy Network Australia. While everyday economics has assumed all growth is good, the richest countries already have plenty of wealth and resources — they have ‘arrived'. The Economics of Arrival urges us to move from enlarging the economy to improving it, exploring the benefits this could bring for all, and how it can be done. Importantly in this context, Aboriginal people in this country might well ask when they'll have the opportunity to ‘arrive'. And with all we continue to learn about the sophistication of Aboriginal culture in Australia throughout millennia, what other narratives of ‘progress' and development are available for us to share in? Hot on the heels of the Wellbeing Budget in New Zealand, just the latest in a raft of key developments around the world, we explore how we change systems, stories and measures, to transition to an economy geared towards shared quality of life, rather than sheer quantity of stuff. 'The Economics of Arrival: Ideas for a grown up economy' is the new book by Katherine Trebeck and Jeremy Williams, with a foreword by Kate Raworth (best-selling author of 'Doughnut Economics: 7 ways to think like a 21st century economist). 45. Economic Growth To Save the Planet? Live panel event with Ian Dunlop, Miriam Lyons & Jan Owen AM

Economic growth is stagnating, hitting up against a range of limits. Last week's news that GDP growth in Australia is at its lowest since the GFC, with interest rates already at an unprecedented low of 1% (they are negative in many places around the world), emphasises what is increasingly apparent to people around the world – the old model isn't working, and it's not coming back. So what's the future of the growth-based system, and how do we transition to a new model of work, business and economics, while avoiding collapse? Around 300 people filled the Greenhouse in Melbourne, Australia, at the 2016 National Sustainable Living Festival, with a highly credentialed panel exploring these questions. While the conversation took place a few years ago, its relevance and importance only seem to heighten. You'll hear from: - Jan Owen AM, CEO of the Foundation for Young Australians, the Inaugural Australian Financial Review/Westpac Woman of Influence 2012, and former director for the Australian National Development Index (ANDI). - Miriam Lyons, a campaigns director for the prominent progressive advocacy network GetUp!, co-author of Governomics, and previously the founding CEO of the Centre for Policy Development. - Ian Dunlop, formerly an international oil, gas and coal industry executive, chairman of the Australian Coal Association and CEO of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a director of Australia21 and a Member of the Club of Rome. Each panellist speaks for 10 minutes, leading off with a little story on how they came to do what they do. Then we're into another powerful Q&A with the capacity audience (featuring in a special extra to this podcast). In the words of Ross Gittins, celebrated economics writer and Economics Editor at the Sydney Morning Herald: "The beginning of economic wisdom is to understand that the advanced economies – including ours – have stopped working the way they used to and won't be returning to the old normal." So what is the future of the growth-based economic system? Especially in the context of planetary limits, resource constraints, rising inequality, increased automation, increasing mental illness, and worsening extinction and climate crises. What's an economy even for? And how can we recreate it for the better, and quickly? Thanks to Chris Grose from Scout Films for this recording, and the team at the Understandascope who supported this event. The Understandascope builds on the legacy of the late Professor Frank Fisher. Last month saw the 10th anniversary of the Lehman Brothers collapse that triggered the GFC. It was a fitting occasion to launch a new global alliance on the streets of New York City - the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, poetically abbreviated to WEAll. The Alliance has come about through a collaboration of some of the most influential and inspiring figures in this space. One of them is Dr Katherine Trebeck, the Alliance's Research Director. She's also an author, with her new book out next year, ‘The Economics of Arrival: Ideas for a grown-up economy'. WEAll is set up to help bring about the transformation of the economic system, society and its institutions, so that we prioritise shared wellbeing on a healthy planet. How will it do that? How did it come about? Who's involved so far, and how do more of us join in? Katherine talks with Anthony about all this, along with some key developments like the new Wellbeing Economy Governments coalition being launched at the OECD's Wellbeing Forum next month, and some of her instructive personal journey into the very heart of how we organise ourselves.
