Sustainability and environmental responsibility are high on the priority list for the Proven Winners team and their partners. Their new Eco+ plastic-free and industrial compostable pots are a key part of this plant powered package. Host Bill Calkins caught up with Proven Winners' director of sales, Dave Konsoer and Danny Mishek, president of VistaTek—the award-winning manufacturing company behind the new pots and other plant-based, compostable products making their way into many industries. Danny, Dave and Bill discussed all aspects of the new packaging from manufacturing and trialing to ensure integrity in greenhouse environments to seamless integration into crop production systems and the strong, branded retail presence for which Proven Winners is known. Danny explained regulatory changes coming quickly in many states and why bio-based materials and plastic-free pots like Proven Winners' Eco+ will help growers stay ahead of “extended producer responsibility” laws. Plus, as Dave explained, consumers clearly want responsible packaging and look to Proven Winners as a leader in the gardening space. Photo by Suzanne Rushton on Unsplash Modern 'sustainable' innovations in architecture are failing to slow climate change, but revisiting ancient knowledge and techniques found in traditional architecture could offer better solutions. sustainable futureThis is the argument of architectural historians Professor Florian Urban and Barnabas Calder in their new book Form Follows Fuel: 14 Buildings from Antiquity to the Oil Age. The authors argue that energy availability has been the biggest influence in architecture throughout human history. How architecture can help a sustainable future Their extensive study is the first to calculate energy inputs for a range of historical buildings, demonstrating how different types of fuel, from human labour to fossil fuels, have fundamentally determined building designs across civilisations and eras. "The history of architecture can be told as a history of energy," the authors explain. "Today's architecture is accordingly the outcome of four centuries of effort, innovation and ingenuity directed at maximising the proportion of architectural production and operation that could be powered by fossil fuel heat." This argument comes at a critical moment in architectural history, as the building sector currently accounts for 37% of all human climate-changing emissions. Despite decades of research and discussion, the environmental impact of buildings continues to rise. Urban and Calder document how the shift to fossil fuels begins in the 17th century and transforms architecture more profoundly than any other development in human history. This transition reversed the previous dynamic, where labour was cheap and heat expensive, creating an architectural model which depended on energy-intensive materials and processes that reduced human input. "If form follows fuel, ours is fundamentally an architecture of intense fossil fuel consumption," the authors explain. Even as society becomes more aware of emissions and carbon footprint, and more efforts are made to build sustainably, the authors prove that today's architecture comes at a catastrophically high energy cost. They explain how globally influential minimalist designs often depend on massive energy consumption, for example, the Seagram Building in New York, widely praised for its simplicity, received an energy efficiency rating of just 3 out of 100 from the US Environmental Protection Agency, and cost more energy to build than the entire labour cost of quarrying, transporting and placing 5.5m tonnes of stone for the largest of the Egyptian pyramids. "Mies's famous dictum that 'less is more,' turns out to be missing a word: 'less is more carbon,'" the authors explain. "Per square meter of floor space, it used four times as much energy as the average American office building in 2012." By contrast, pre-modern buildings like the Scottish blackhouse achieved remarkable thermal efficiency using only local materials and passive design strategies. Examples of buildings like these show how humans have always before been able to provide the interior space and thermal comfort needed for survival in a harsh climate, while being fully sustainable and recyclable. The authors' studies span 4,500 years of architectural history, from the Great Pyramid of Giza to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The authors offer practical solutions for contemporary architects by unpicking the specific energy costs of different building elements and materials. For instance, their research demonstrates how structural stone tenements used significantly less energy throughout their life cycle than similar brick buildings, providing quantifiable metrics to inform modern sustainable design decisions. Professor Urban says: "With regard to energy consumption, the world has never had so many pharaohs. For over five decades Jonathon has been a leading voice on sustainability, from his early days in the Green Party and Friends of the Earth to his most recent book Love, Anger, and Betrayal.We explored what he calls the “science–politics gap” - the dangerous disconnect between what climate science tells us and how slowly politicians respond. Jonathon was clear: unless that gap is narrowed, our prospects as a species are in serious jeopardy. We also delved into why he believes civil disobedience is a legitimate and necessary part of climate action. Through movements like Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain, and Just Stop Oil, he sees a moral urgency that traditional policy advocacy alone has failed to achieve.Jonathon also warned of the erosion of fundamental rights in the UK, freedom of speech and protest, and how the policing of nonviolent direct action has edged dangerously close to authoritarianism. He highlighted the corrosive influence of fossil fuel money on politics and media, and why he believes only a reckoning in the financial system, particularly the insurance sector, might finally force systemic change.Yet despite the anger, Jonathon remains hopeful. How so, and why?Kevin Guskiewicz:Well, Michigan State University is a proudly public university, one that fills a commitment to the people of Michigan. We rely on taxpayer dollars to transform the lives and improve the quality of life for Michiganders. And so much of the work that's done here through our teaching research and outreach is about the common good. I mean, the new strategic plan that we're here talking about, it's woven throughout the entire roadmap. It's about all that we do is for the public good, the common good. And we felt that the first time we touched down here in East Lansing. And 18 months in, I feel even better about where we're headed than what I did two years ago when I started exploring the opportunity.Speaker 1:And Bill, you've been involved with the plan's development and implementation from the start. What strikes you about the refresh?Bill Beekman:Well, I think one of the most important things about the refresh is the fact that we're actually doing it. So often you have strategic plans that get built and there's inordinate amounts of time spent working on them, and then they sort of drift away. And I think what's really wonderful about the creation of this plan and those that were there at the start, is that they very intentionally decided that we should have a refresh that about a third 40% of the way into the implementation of the plan, that we should pause, take a look at the environment, what's changed, what's going well, what should we be thinking about changing based on internal and external factors and recalibrate. And so it's really a living plan. And to me that's one the most important aspects of the plan is that it does change. It does adapt to our circumstances and our environment.(03:08):It allows for us to think about where should we be course correcting? What things should we be doing differently? How should we learn from what we've done? And that constant course correcting and a living plan, I think continues to make it relevant to what we're doing. And so the process has really been wonderful and allowed our team to focus on the future. It was fortuitous that it happened as Kevin had been here for about nine months or thereabouts, so his energy and vision could be incorporated into the work we're doing. And so yeah, it's been a wonderful process and it's great to see it finished and the work of implementation goes on.Speaker 1 (03:57):Yes. And Kevin, you've often referred to MSU 2030 as a roadmap in addition to a strategic plan. Why is it important for MSU to have this plan and to refresh it now? Sarah Lalor, General Manager ESG and Sustainable Finance at Commonwealth Bank Australia (CBA) explains the bank’s multi-pronged approach to supporting businesses at every stage of their sustainability journeys. It’s a wonderful case study of how one organisation can multiply its ESG impact by influencing the organisations it supports. In conversation with Ashurst’s Elena Lambros, Sarah takes us on a whistle-stop tour of CBA’s strategy to assist businesses of all sizes. They discuss how SMEs and mid-market businesses are shifting from what Sarah describes as a “curiosity mindset” to an “action mindset”. This is being driven through a combination of: Savings including lower energy bills Enablers such as CBA’s asset finance for energy-efficient equipment, solar and EVs for businesses of all sizes, Green Loans and Sustainability-Linked Loans for larger businesses Expectations from investors, and procurement requirements from larger businesses that are subject to new mandatory climate-related disclosures. While acknowledging the challenge for small businesses to devote time to ESG strategy, Sarah emphasises the proven commercial rewards of doing so. She also explains how Sustainability-Linked Loans work and she illustrates the value of the ‘S’ in ESG (e.g. social outcomes such as employee wellbeing). Sarah and Elena highlight some industries that are embracing sustainable finance, such as hospitality, retirement living and aged care, and commercial property. And they welcome the sustainable finance taxonomy which promises to bring greater consistency and confidence in the market. They also emphasise the commercial benefits for small businesses that don’t wait, but instead seize the initiative. As Sarah points out, SMEs that go beyond compliance and really embrace ESG now can access new markets, win more contracts and tenders, and be more attractive propositions for customers and potential employees alike. “At first the Euroamerican settlers could not fathom the tallgrass prairie. Stepping into it from cropland-speckled woodlands to the east, they entered a land of sky and horizon, wind and light, flower and scent, a surging sea of grasses that staggered the imagination. The prairie grasslands seemed to stretch on forever, a landscape that promised no enclosure, only intensity and exposure…” So writes Cornelia (Connie) Mutel in her book, The Emerald Horizon: The History of Nature in Iowa, a modern classic of natural history. Mutel has spent her life chronicling the fantastic and beleaguered landscape of her home state, and the place that she knows and loves like no other. Her life's work- seven books written or edited, all on different aspects of Iowa's natural history- could be viewed as a requiem: only 0.1% of the native tallgrass prairies remain in Iowa, over 97% of its' once wildly biodiverse landscapes have been converted to human use, agricultural runoff and toxic spills have poisoned over half of the state's waterways and thousands of its residents' wells, the draining of wetlands causes massive, budget-breaking floods, topsoil loss is at crisis level. The current model of Iowa's agriculture does not work for anyone, and there seems to be no political will to change it. But Connie Mutel, a writer steeped in the understanding of time, nature, and change, does not believe in requiems.
