LESSON 129Beyond This World There Is A World I Want.This is the thought that follows from the one we practiced yesterday. You cannot stop with the idea the world is worthless, for unless you see that there is something else to hope for, you will only be depressed. Our emphasis is not on giving up the world, but on exchanging it for what is far more satisfying, filled with joy, and capable of offering you peace. Think you this world can offer that to you?It might be worth a little time to think once more about the value of this world. Perhaps you will concede there is no loss in letting go all thought of value here. The world you see is merciless indeed, unstable, cruel, unconcerned with you, quick to avenge and pitiless with hate. It gives but to rescind, and takes away all things that you have cherished for a while. No lasting love is found, for none is here. This is the world of time, where all things end.Is it a loss to find a world instead where losing is impossible; where love endures forever, hate cannot exist and vengeance has no meaning? Is it loss to find all things you really want, and know they have no ending and they will remain exactly as you want them throughout time? Yet even they will be exchanged at last for what we cannot speak of, for you go from there to where words fail entirely, into a silence where the language is unspoken and yet surely understood.Communication, unambiguous and plain as day, remains unlimited for all eternity. And God Himself speaks to His Son, as His Son speaks to Him. Their language has no words, for what They say cannot be symbolized. Their knowledge is direct and wholly shared and wholly one. How far away from this are you who stay bound to this world. And yet how near are you, when you exchange it for the world you want.Now is the last step certain; now you stand an instant's space away from timelessness. Here can you but look forward, never back to see again the world you do not want. Here is the world that comes to take its place, as you unbind your mind from little things the world sets forth to keep you prisoner. Value them not, and they will disappear. Esteem them, and they will seem real to you.Such is the choice. What loss can be for you in choosing not to value nothingness? This world holds nothing that you really want, but what you choose instead you want indeed! Let it be given you today. It waits but for your choosing it, to take the place of all the things you seek but do not want.Practice your willingness to make this change ten minutes in the morning and at night, and once more in between. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Millicent Martin, Veteran Stage, Screen and TV Star About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Millicent Martin, is a beloved and iconic actress and singer whose 7-decade career spans every medium in the world of entertainment.   After some early theatre work in her native England, she made her Broadway debut in 1954 alongside Julie Andrews in “The Boyfriend”.  She's also starred on Broadway in the original production of “42nd Street”, and “Side by Side by Sondheim”, for which she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.   She received a second Best Actress Tony Award nomination for her starring role in the musical, “King of Hearts”.   In London's West End, she starred in “Expresso Bongo”, “The Crooked Mile” and “The Card”.  And over the years, she's starred in a number of other shows in London, including the Sondheim musical “Follies” and “Gigi”.  In movies, she's appeared in “Nothing But the Best”,  “Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines”, “Stop the World – I Want to Get Off”, “Alfie” and “The Last Word”.    And on television, she became a household name in the UK, first on the enormously popular BBC hit series “That Was the Week That Was”, for which she won a BAFTA TV Award in 1964 - and then, for 3 seasons, as the star of her own TV series, “Mainly Millicent”, for which she won a TV Society Award.   On American television, you've seen her in dozens of shows, playing memorable characters like “Harriet Conover” in “Downtown”, “Gladys Moon” on “Moon and Son”, “Lili Faversham” on “Days of Our Lives”, “Gertrude Moon”, Daphne's mother, on “Frasier”, and most recently, as Joan-Margaret, on “Grace and Frankie”, co-starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.  She's also had guest starring roles on “The Drew Carey Show”, “Will & Grace”, “Modern Family”, “Hot in Cleveland”, “2 Broke Girls” and many others.    For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/

Many of us feel that we want to stop the world and get off given the suffering that we see all around. But without conflict and adversity, how would we have the opportunity to practice compassion? And where would we go if we got off? There is the implication that there is a place to go away from “what is.” It's useful to look at our escape fantasies. While resistance is sometimes demonized on the path, it is a normal part of life. What is the world that we want to stop? We are in and out of worlds of our own creation all day long. The question on the spiritual path is about stopping the world-making mind. Our worlds can be about overwhelm, “never enough,” taking things personally, giving our power away, being a victim, or renewal and new beginnings. We want to get off the world in times of great suffering. There is no way to avoid making our worlds. Responsibility comes into play when we see how we are creating them. It can be useful to stop, step away and take a whole new perspective on our worlds. Sometimes getting off is what we need to be with the unknown. Some types of shock (falling in love, the death of a loved one) can stop the world and be used either for or against growth. We can stop the world with breath, putting attention on the sensations of the body in the present, or saying the name of God. As soon as we notice a hook, we have identified with a self and a world we're creating. Since this is the world we are in, we can choose to be here. Self-absorption is never the source of real happiness. Why have we come to earth? To love, serve, and remember. Beyond this world there is a world I want. This is the thought that follows from the one we practiced yesterday. You cannot stop with the idea the world is worthless, for unless you see that there is something else to hope for, you will only be depressed. Our emphasis is not on giving up the world, but on exchanging it for what is far more satisfying, filled with joy, and capable of offering you peace. Think you this world can offer that to you? It might be worth a little time to think once more about the value of this world. Perhaps you will concede there is no loss in letting go all thought of value here. The world you see is merciless indeed, unstable, cruel, unconcerned with you, quick to avenge and pitiless with hate. It gives but to rescind, and takes away all things that you have cherished for a while. No lasting love is found, for none is here. This is the world of time, where all things end. Is it a loss to find a world instead where losing is impossible; where love endures forever, hate cannot exist and vengeance has no meaning? Is it loss to find all things you really want, and know they have no ending and they will remain exactly as you want them throughout time? Yet even they will be exchanged at last for what we cannot speak of, for you go from there to where words fail entirely, into a silence where the language is unspoken and yet surely understood. Communication, unambiguous and plain as day, remains unlimited for all eternity. And God Himself speaks to His Son, as His Son speaks to Him. Their language has no words, for what They say cannot be symbolized. Their knowledge is direct and wholly shared and wholly one. How far away from this are you who stay bound to this world. And yet how near are you, when you exchange it for the world you want. Now is the last step certain; now you stand an instant's space away from timelessness. Here can you but look forward, never back to see again the world you do not want. Here is the world that comes to take its place, as you unbind your mind from little things the world sets forth to keep you prisoner. Value them not, and they will disappear. Esteem them, and they will seem real to you. Such is the choice. What loss can be for you in choosing not to value nothingness? This world holds nothing that you really want, but what you choose instead you want indeed! Let it be given you today. It waits but for your choosing it, to take the place of all the things you seek but do not want. Practice your willingness to make this change ten minutes in the morning and at night, and once more in between. Begin with this: Beyond this world there is a world I want. I choose to see that world instead of this, for here is nothing that I really want. On a cool but sunny late November day, I enjoy observing my flock of sheep dotting the pasture. On the whole, they look sleek, fat and healthy. But the two senior ewes, Nilufer (13 years old) and the unnamed number 45 (12 years old, rear left, behind her chubbier flock-mates, in the picture above) present a somewhat sad contrast. Both have been scrawny for years, so scrawny that for the last couple of years I've only had them sheared in the Spring, not both Spring and Fall like the rest of the flock. We decided that with little body fat they would need their full pelt to keep warm; their wool would not grow back fast and thick enough to insulate against winter weather. I had always assumed that the old ewes' scrawniness was just a function of their age, much as many humans diminish as they get older. Both ewes have hearty appetites; both can keep up with the flock as it moves about; and both lambed successfully last year. These are all indicators of decent health. They are both very people friendly. But several weeks ago, Nilufer and 45 were among the half dozen or so flock members who suffered with diarrhea and/or had indications of anemia, signs of potential infection with parasitic worms. I administered medication to all half dozen, and was immediately successful with the younger flock members. But Nilufer and 45 both required a second treatment. And even after the second treatment, 45 continued to have the runs. I consulted the vet, who recommended yet a third treatment and, if the diarrhea did not resolve in a week, that I bring in a stool sample to try to diagnose her. The lab analysis told us that 45′s problem was not parasitic worms. While the absence of resistant parasites was the good news, the bad news from the vet was that it could mean other causes like Johne's Disease (a microbacterial infection of the gut that results in poor food absorption) or another wasting disease. I asked what she would recommend, and she responded that I could test for Johne's Disease, which could be done with the stool sample already submitted but could take 12 weeks, or I could wait and see if she was suffering from cold in the winter and euthanize her if she was, or I could cull her now to avoid spreading of whatever she has. Naturally I hate the idea of culling an animal that seems otherwise quite happy, with a hearty appetite, and is in no distress. But I hate equally the idea of exposing the rest of the flock to a disease for which there is no effective treatment, though apparently there is a vaccine. Is this dilemma beginning to sound familiar? It reminds me of some of the difficult decisions our governmental authorities, listening to the advice of their public health experts, must make to deal with COVID-19 and other diseases. We don't cull humans, but we do isolate or quarantine them, or forbid them from engaging in economic activity, in order to prevent spreading infection broadly. Getting the balance right is not easy. For now, I've opted just to get the test done for Johne's disease. My decision not to cull was informed by the resolution of 45′s diarrhea and by my learning that Johne's disease develops slowly over time. If this is the cause of 45′s and Nilufer's several years of scrawniness, others in the flock are likely already infected and waiting another 12 weeks won't matter very much. If the test comes back positive, I will consider culling the two oldest ewes. And in either event, I will try to obtain vaccine for the rest, though vaccine is thought to be most effective in young lambs. I am relieved that if I decide to cull these ewes it will affect nobody outside this farm. That makes it unlikely that I will be vilified, harassed or threatened by political activists who object to disease control measures that impinge on any activity, even when that activity spreads deadly infection. This weekend we've learned that there is an Omicron variant of Covid 19 of concern to the World Health Organization. The variant has spread in quickly in South Africa where vaccine hesitancy is apparently a major factor in the low vaccination rate. Even before any Omicron infections are identified here, our country is preparing for a fifth surge of hospitalizations and deaths. This surge is also fueled by vaccine hesitancy and resistance to wearing masks. At the same time, we hear that President Biden's approval rating has hit new lows, largely because of inflation and supply chain disruptions which are by-products of the pandemic. Yet vaccine opponents and anti-maskers, who are contributing in major ways to the problem, are the ones who judge him most negatively for not finding the solutions. The know-nothingism that is extending and possibly intensifying the pandemic leads me to fear that the doomsayers among us may be right. It's the same know-nothingism which denies the human role in climate change and opposes spending money to mitigate it. The sort of know-nothingism that creates crises and leads to political instability. In the early 1960′s Stop the World I Want to Get Off was the title of a light-hearted West End musical. Sometimes nowadays, it becomes my motto. . (with music) TOPICS: imagining my limbic system & amygdala as evolutionarily older parents of my young prefrontal cortex 'Watchtower' kid part of the brain which thinks itself in charge & all-knowing, a fundamentally unequal and abuse-prone approach to the treatment of patients & clients (particularly with autism but anyone in pain and need), the value and limitations of my imaginative human brain bits that say 'this ain't all there is' and dares to dream, heeding the instincts and emotions rather than ignoring them and hurting others, treating others with the low-arousal approach I want from them, being more compassionate & empathetic & humble with neurotypicals but not accepting the unacceptable or making myself responsible for managing their emotions & excuses when they're preventing me from meeting an urgent need, a fantasy of doctors (and other providers & authorities) being required to complete Continuing Humility (maybe with Sense of Humor thrown in?) Education each year to maintain that authority, trying to identify signs that someone will be worth working or playing with or relating to or when to call it quits and seek other options, trying to be more gentle with my failures and fixate less when things don't go well for reasons that have nothing to do with me, making smarter choices when & where I disclose my autism while I'm in such dire straits and riddled with unmet needs, making space for music when I'm distressed.

Beyond this world there is a world I want. This is the thought that follows from the one we practiced yesterday. You cannot stop with the idea the world is worthless, for unless you see that there is something else to hope for, you will only be depressed. Our emphasis is not on giving up the world, but on exchanging it for what is far more satisfying, filled with joy, and capable of offering you peace. Think you this world can offer that to you? It might be worth a little time to think once more about the value of this world. Perhaps you will concede there is no loss in letting go all thought of value here. The world you see is merciless indeed, unstable, cruel, unconcerned with you, quick to avenge and pitiless with hate. It gives but to rescind, and takes away all things that you have cherished for a while. No lasting love is found, for none is here. This is the world of time, where all things end. Is it a loss to find a world instead where losing is impossible; where love endures forever, hate cannot exist and vengeance has no meaning? Is it loss to find all things you really want, and know they have no ending and they will remain exactly as you want them throughout time? Yet even they will be exchanged at last for what we cannot speak of, for you go from there to where words fail entirely, into a silence where the language is unspoken and yet surely understood. Communication, unambiguous and plain as day, remains unlimited for all eternity. And God Himself speaks to His Son, as His Son speaks to Him. Their language has no words, for what They say cannot be symbolized. Their knowledge is direct and wholly shared and wholly one. How far away from this are you who stay bound to this world. And yet how near are you, when you exchange it for the world you want. Now is the last step certain; now you stand an instant's space away from timelessness. Here can you but look forward, never back to see again the world you do not want. Here is the world that comes to take its place, as you unbind your mind from little things the world sets forth to keep you prisoner. Value them not, and they will disappear. Esteem them, and they will seem real to you. Such is the choice. What loss can be for you in choosing not to value nothingness? This world holds nothing that you really want, but what you choose instead you want indeed! Let it be given you today. It waits but for your choosing it, to take the place of all the things you seek but do not want. Practice your willingness to make this change ten minutes in the morning and at night, and once more in between. Begin with this: Beyond this world there is a world I want. I choose to see that world instead of this, for here is nothing that I really want. Then close your eyes upon the world you see, and in the silent darkness watch the lights that are not of this world light one by one, until where one begins another ends loses all meaning as they blend in one. Today the lights of Heaven bend to you, to shine upon your eyelids as you rest beyond the world of darkness. Here is light your eyes can not behold. And yet your mind can see it plainly, and can understand. A day of grace is given you today, and we give thanks. This day we realize that what you feared to lose was only loss. Now do we understand there is no loss. For we have seen its opposite at last, and we are grateful that the choice is made. Remember your decision hourly, and take a moment to confirm your choice by laying by whatever thoughts you have, and dwelling briefly only upon this: The world I see holds nothing that I want. Stop the World, I Want to Get Off! Isaiah 40 Life can be like a roller coaster. At times, thrilling and exciting. And other times, frightening with unexpected twists and turns. When life gets frightening and you experience unexpected twists and turns, do you ever catch yourself saying something like, “Stop the world, I want to get off!” This morning we will see a message of comfort that God gives His people during these times. 2 Truths: 1. When you feel __________ remember God is ______________ (Isaiah 40:27-28). 2. When you feel ________ remember God is ____________ (Isaiah 40:29-31). Application: 1. When life gets frightening and uncertain how can remembering that God is present be comforting? How do you respond when you lose sight of this truth? 2. How can trying to do things alone in your own strength make you tired? How can waiting on the Lord renew your strength?

Greetings! Welcome to Lechem Panim. We are continuing today our study of the epistle of 1 John, a book that is centered on helping us to be real, authentic Christians. And John writes in… 1 John 2:15-17 (ESV)-- 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life[a]—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. The Lust of the Eyes— Now we took a look at the lust of the flesh last week. But the second thing John warns us about is the lust of the eyes. And what John means by this phrase is the coveting of anything that is not your own. Ten Commandment Climax— I am amazed in looking at the Ten Commandments because we see that the last one is very different from the first nine. The first nine (You shall have no other gods, you shall not take the name of God in vain, you shall remember the Sabbath and keep it holy, you shall honor your father and mother, you shall not murder, commit adultery, or steal, or bear false witness) are all outward sins; sins of commission or sins of omission; things we do or don't do physically. But the last one is completely unique in that it is the only commandment that deals with something internal; something inside of you. It says… Exodus 20:17 (NIV)— 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” A World of Discontent-- And I wonder if this in not the climax of all the Ten Commandments. Many argue that it is. The Law of God climaxes in where your heart rests, not just in what you do or don't do. We live in a world that is always trying to make us dissatisfied with who we are and what we have. It always tries to tell us that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. [The problem is that when you get what's on the other side you are never satisfied. The object of your desires never lives up to its billing and you are left feeling empty and unsatisfied and so you covet all the more. The burger on the TV ad is never as big and juicy at the pick up window. The truth is that the grass isn't any greener on the other side of the fence. In fact, what's on the other side often isn't as good as what you already have.]  Covetous Cows— One of the funnier things you can observe if you ever visit a farm is [seeing cows in a nice green pasture with plenty of grass stretching their necks through a barbed wire fence in an effort to get a bite of short, brown grass in a neighbor's pasture. Too many Christians in our world today are acting just like those cows.] There is always something better. Apple Crazy-- Having worked for Apple I follow the various new things they create. Apple is one of the few companies that truly inspires me by what they create. I watch their new product announcements much like any of you watch a football game. I enjoy seeing what advancements are being made; what boundaries are being pushed; what new ground is being broken. And their last one was this past week. Now I will say this; whenever Apple has one of their keynote events where they reveal their new product, they really know how to make what you have look old and obsolete. That iPhone you got a month ago; it's not really cool anymore because this new one can do this or that. When iPhone 5 came out years ago, a comedian on tv said about the previous generation of iPhone she had bought not long before that: “I now know what iPhone 4s stands for: For suckers!” Now her phone was still pretty cool, but she didn't feel that way anymore. Now I don't really care too much about having the latest and the greatest. I will buy a computer or phone and use it till it breaks; and then I often keep using it. But for a lot of people, they cannot have peace until they replace what they currently have with the next level up. Just read the news announcements that are going to appear this fall about how long the lines are of people in front of their local retailer to get those new Apple products, many of whom have perfectly good devices already. Cell Phone Madness— I mean cell phone plans are changing now because while people used to sign contracts for two years and use the phone they chose for that long or longer, now people want to be upgrading all the time. There are cell-phone and computer buy-back programs set up now in mobile stores and stores like Best Buy to accommodate that insatiable desire to have the latest and the greatest. Marital Discontent-- We live in a world that always makes what we don't have seem better. And partially this may be why we struggle with divorce so much in our culture. We run into problems in our relationships, so we are told to abandon ship and start over with somebody better. But when we do we find out that that person has, if not the same flaws, flaws of their own. Many have affairs because they are seeking to gratify something in a relationship with someone else that they feel that they need and can't find in the person they are married to. But the secret of contentment doesn't lie with the thing possessed but in the heart of the possessor. Paul says in… Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV)-- 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. A Very Misinterpreted Verse-- Now notice that last verse (verse 13): 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. This has to be one of the most misinterpreted verses in all of scripture. We strip that verse out of its context and use it in whatever area of our life we want to see victory. I can reach that next level; I can get that better job; I can obtain more and more because I can do all this through him who gives me strength. But what we always forget is that that verse is a summary, if you will of verses 11-12, which talk about Paul's learning to be content no matter what situation he is placed in. What Paul is saying is that he is victorious in his contentment because God gives him the strength to maintain that contentedness. And ultimately Christ can help you and me to be content no matter where we are because it is in Christ we find our ultimate fulfillment. And it is when we understand that that God is more freed up to bless us. God blesses those who find fulfillment in Him; otherwise He runs the risk of placing idols in your life.  The Pride of Life-- The last thing John warns us to watch out for is the pride of life. And one author I read pointed out how [This “pride of life” essentially consists of two things: (1) Boasting about material possessions; and (2) Boasting about accomplishments. …proud of either your position in life or your possessions in life.… Such pride causes you to put your faith in yourself rather than in God. Therefore, such pride will ultimately cut you off from the grace of God because his grace is received through faith alone. The Bible clearly teaches that pride will lead to our downfall. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). It should come as no surprise to you that Jesus was also tempted in this manner. Satan dared Jesus to show off by leaping from the top of the temple. Jesus responded, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test'” (Matthew 4:7). If we have been blessed with positions and possessions we must be careful not to put our confidence in them because verse seventeen tells us that they will not last.] “the world is passing away along with its desires”— [Verse seventeen says, “The world and its desires pass away...” The Bible teaches us that one day the world and all the things of the world will be destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:10-11). If you have lived your life only for the things of this world, what will you have left on that day? Nothing! That is why Jim Elliot said, “He is no fool who gives up that which he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” This verse is teaching us that we will share in the destiny of whatever we give our lives to. If we give our lives to the world we will burn in the lake of fire for all of eternity. If we give our lives to God we will enjoy paradise for all of eternity as the verse says, “the man who does the will of God lives forever.” The following quote says it well: “Only one life, ‘twill soon be past; only what is done for Christ will last.” Are you living for eternity or for the now? Are you more concerned about laying up treasure for retirement or for heaven? Are you more concerned about what people will think of you today or about what God will think of you on Judgment Day?] Let us preserve our bodies from the lust of the flesh; let us preserve our eyes from the seduction of covetousness; let us guard our hearts against the pitfall of pride. Dear World, I Want A Divorce— This week my secretary asked me for my sermon title so she could print it in the bulletin. Preaching on this passage, I told her “Not Loving The World”. And then I thought, “No, that's boring. Let me think of something catchy that represents the heart of what John is talking about.” And I came up with the opening of a letter: “Dear World, I Want A Divorce.” And I liked that much better. But it got me thinking; if you and I were to write a letter of divorce to the world, what would it say? Maybe something like: Dear world, I have been married to you for years. I indulged in the gluttony, the lust, the sex, the ambition; I tried every amusement and spent a lot of valuable time and money on material gain. But I just became more and more dissatisfied. And I gotta tell you, things just aren't working out. You aren't making me happy anymore. And what's more, I have found Somebody better; a Way that is better; a Life that is better. So, Dear World, I want a divorce. Maybe that's a letter you want to write this week. Then maybe write a second letter, this time to the new object of your love, your Lord. “Dear Jesus, here's why I have chosen to unite myself with and be faithful to you. Please help me to be. Change my heart and mind so that they are aligned with Your Word and Your Kingdom. Let me tell you, don't write or say something like that unless you are ready for God to move, because God will always respond to that kind of request if it is offered from a heart that is willing and ready to obey Him. Let's commit ourselves to Him today. Romans 12:1-2 (ESV)— 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. May you know that transformation and renewing today. Amen.

Beyond this world there is a world I want. This is the thought that follows from the one we practiced yesterday. You cannot stop with the idea the world is worthless, for unless you see that there is something else to hope for, you will only be depressed. Our emphasis is not on giving up the world, but on exchanging it for what is far more satisfying, filled with joy, and capable of offering you peace. Think you this world can offer that to you? It might be worth a little time to think once more about the value of this world. Perhaps you will concede there is no loss in letting go all thought of value here. The world you see is merciless indeed, unstable, cruel, unconcerned with you, quick to avenge and pitiless with hate. It gives but to rescind, and takes away all things that you have cherished for a while. No lasting love is found, for none is here. This is the world of time, where all things end. Is it a loss to find a world instead where losing is impossible; where love endures forever, hate cannot exist and vengeance has no meaning? Is it loss to find all things you really want, and know they have no ending and they will remain exactly as you want them throughout time? Yet even they will be exchanged at last for what we cannot speak of, for you go from there to where words fail entirely, into a silence where the language is unspoken and yet surely understood. Communication, unambiguous and plain as day, remains unlimited for all eternity. And God Himself speaks to His Son, as His Son speaks to Him. Their language has no words, for what They say cannot be symbolized. Their knowledge is direct and wholly shared and wholly one. How far away from this are you who stay bound to this world. And yet how near are you, when you exchange it for the world you want. Now is the last step certain; now you stand an instant's space away from timelessness. Here can you but look forward, never back to see again the world you do not want. Here is the world that comes to take its place, as you unbind your mind from little things the world sets forth to keep you prisoner. Value them not, and they will disappear. Esteem them, and they will seem real to you. Such is the choice. What loss can be for you in choosing not to value nothingness? This world holds nothing that you really want, but what you choose instead you want indeed! Let it be given you today. It waits but for your choosing it, to take the place of all the things you seek but do not want. Practice your willingness to make this change ten minutes in the morning and at night, and once more in between. Begin with this: Beyond this world there is a world I want. I choose to see that world instead of this, for here is nothing that I really want. Then close your eyes upon the world you see, and in the silent darkness watch the lights that are not of this world light one by one, until where one begins another ends loses all meaning as they blend in one. Today the lights of Heaven bend to you, to shine upon your eyelids as you rest beyond the world of darkness. Here is light your eyes can not behold. And yet your mind can see it plainly, and can understand. A day of grace is given you today, and we give thanks. This day we realize that what you feared to lose was only loss. Now do we understand there is no loss. For we have seen its opposite at last, and we are grateful that the choice is made. Remember your decision hourly, and take a moment to confirm your choice by laying by whatever thoughts you have, and dwelling briefly only upon this: The world I see holds nothing that I want. “We could be having so much fun that there just isn't time to consume resources on a quantity, or produce waste on a quantity that would be problematic for the planet,” according Mike Nickerson. He shares his ideas about how enjoyable it could be to make the cultural shift necessary for human civilization to be sustainable. Mike Nickerson has spent his career advancing sustainability. In the 1970s he founded and co-directed the Institute for the Study of Cultural Evolution. Today he leads the Sustainability Project/7th Generation Initiative in Canada, a non-profit organization that collects, studies, develops and teaches ideas, information, technologies and customs that promote green values and lead toward a sustainable future. Nickerson wrote legislation to launch measurement of a Genuine Progress Index in Canada. The Canadian government never followed through, but an independent Canadian Index of Wellbeing was eventually developed. His books include Change the World I Want to Stay On; Planning for Seven Generations: Guideposts for a Sustainable Future; and Life, Money and Illusion. More recently Mike has been helping to build the Lanark Eco-Village in Ontario, Canada. This conversation was recorded in 2008, but is being shared now for the first time. Right now, stop and ask yourself this question: "what kind of world do I want to live in?" We are writing tomorrow's history right now, all of us, together.I want to live in a world where every damn time I turn on a tv or a radio, there's not someone coming at me with a message that tries to manipulate me by showing me some cleverly conceived way of rationalizing hate for others into love of myself and my family.I want to live in a world that values education so much that it is freely available to everyone uniformly.I want to live in a world that simply doesn't give a damn about anyone's personal life, because doing so would just be rude.I want to live in a world where we can stop trying so hard to take advantage of each other (or kill each other for that matter).I want to live in a world where I can believe tomorrow will be better than today. For better or worse, we are all stuck down here at the bottom of this gravity well together. Every last human that ever was ... and the craziest thing about it is that there is nothing standing between us and that world. Nothing but ourselves. And that's sort of what this song is about.
