Is G-d Exaggerating when He Wants Us to Love Him with All Our Heart? This is the first class in a series on a Maamar of the Altter Rebbe, "Reah Anochi," which he said on Shabbos Parshas Reah, 29 Av, 5558, August 11, 1798, published in Likkutei Torah Reah. It explores the four letters of Hashem's name embedded in each soul. This class was presented by Rabbi YY Jacobson on Monday, Parshas Re'eh, 20 Av, 5786, August 3, 2026, at Bais Medrash Ohr Chaim in Monsey, NY. This class discusses the Yud and Hay engraved in our soul and what that means in our lives: the experience of surrender, and the understanding of Hashem's oneness. We discussed how religion can be an external experience, and how the trauma of exile has snuffed out from so many the internal embodied experience of the Divine. We also explained why Hashem asks us to love Him with all our hearts and souls; is that not exaggerated? What if the deepest pain you carry — beneath the marriage, the parnassah, the worries about the children — isn’t what you think it is? In this breathtaking article, based on Rabbi YY Jacobson’s class on the first maamar in Likkutei Torah, Parshas Re’eh, the Alter Rebbe reveals a secret that changes everything: at Matan Torah, Hashem embedded His very name — the Yud and the Hei, “two friends who are never separated” — into your soul. It’s why even the most distant Jew is flooded with regrets he never invited; it’s why we numb ourselves with a thousand distractions. We aren’t broken. We’re homesick. And once you see it, you can never unsee it. This is the Torah the Baal Shem Tov came to reveal — the heartbeat hidden in the holy books all along — brought down by the Alter Rebbe in one of the classic maamarim of Chassidus, and opened up by Rabbi YY with warmth, humor, and stunning honesty. You’ll discover why “k’lo chashiv” doesn’t mean you are nothing — it means nothing can distract you from how deeply okay you are; why your soul’s stubbornness is your greatest gift; and how five seconds a day of this truth can make your soul dance with the very simchah the Baal Shem Tov revealed. Read it slowly. Read it twice. This one is life-changing — and liberating. The first maamar in Likkutei Torah on Parshas Re’eh is one of the classics of Chassidus — a foundational maamar the Rebbe would reference again and again, because it explains how the very name of Hashem is embedded in the soul. The Alter Rebbe delivered it on Shabbos Parshas Re’eh, Erev Rosh Chodesh Elul, in the summer of 1798 — 5558 — the last Shabbos of the era we call “before Petersburg.” Weeks later, he would be arrested and taken to the capital; after his liberation on Yud-Tes Kislev, his maamarim underwent a major transformation. What follows is Torah from that first era, and it goes straight for the heart.View Source Sheets: https://portal.theyeshiva.net/api/source-sheets/9975

Answering “Amen” and Greeting “Shalom” With One's Head Uncovered

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Is it permissible to answer "Amen" when one's head is uncovered? This question occasionally arises in the morning, when a person removes his Kippa in order to properly position his Tefillin Shel Rosh, and he hears a Beracha recited during those moments when his Kippa is off. Another example is a person who hears a Beracha in the barbershop while taking a haircut. Is he allowed to answer "Amen"? Some thought to forbid responding "Amen" bareheaded in light of the Gemara's teaching (Berachot 53b) that one who answers "Amen" to a Beracha is deemed greater than the person who recited the Beracha. The explanation given is that "Amen" in Gematria equals 91 – the combined Gematria of the divine Name "Havaya" (spelled Yod, Heh, Vav and Heh) and Adnut (spelled Alef, Dalet, Nun and Yod). Hence, answering "Amen" – which represents the combination of these two Names – is greater than reciting a blessing, which consists of only one of these two Names (Havaya). Seemingly, if it is improper to recite a Beracha bareheaded, we might assume that it is certainly improper to answer "Amen" bareheaded. In truth, however, this is incorrect. Certainly, if one has the possibility of covering his head to answer "Amen" and does not, then he acts improperly. But if a person finds himself in a situation where he hears a Beracha while his head is bare – as in the situations described – then it is preferable for him to answer 'Amen" bareheaded than to remain silent without responding to the Beracha. This resembles the Halacha concerning proper attire for prayer. While one is of course required to dress himself in an appropriate manner before praying, if, for whatever reason, one is unable to, he should nevertheless pray, rather than refrain from praying due to his unseemly attire. The Poskim also address the question of whether one may greet his fellow with the word "Shalom" while his head is uncovered. The Gemara (Shabbat 10a) brings the opinion of Ula that one may not extend such a greeting in the bathhouse, because "Shalom" is a Name of G-d, and the Shulhan Aruch rules accordingly. We might thus assume that one should avoid extending this greeting while bareheaded, as well, such as when taking a haircut. Hacham Ovadia Yosef, however, ruled that there is room to allow a person to respond to a greeting of "Shalom" while bareheaded. The Rambam does not bring Ula's ruling that one may not extend a greeting of "Shalom" in the bathhouse, as he apparently felt that Ula's position is not accepted as Halacha. Although the Shulhan Aruch – as mentioned – indeed codifies Ula's stringent view, several other Poskim followed the lenient opinion of the Rambam. And, even according to the Shulhan Aruch's view, it does not necessarily follow that if Halacha forbids saying "Shalom" in the bathhouse, it is likewise forbidden to utter this word while bareheaded. In light of this "Sefek Sefeka" (two uncertainties), Hacham Ovadia maintained that one who is bareheaded may respond "Shalom" if his fellow greets him. Rav Moshe Feinstein (1895-1986) maintained that one should not initiate a "Shalom Alechem" greeting to a fellow Jew who does not wear a Kippa, as the person will likely respond, "Alechem Shalom" – uttering the word "Shalom" bareheaded. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Jerusalem, 1910-1995) ruled leniently, asserting that since the individual without a Kippa has no intention to utter a Name of G-d, one is not causing him to sin by creating a situation where he would say "Shalom." Needless to say, Hacham Ovadia would allow initiating such a greeting to somebody who does not wear a Kippa, since in his view there is room to permit uttering "Shalom" bareheaded. Nevertheless, in deference to Rav Moshe Feinstein's stringent view, Hacham Ovadia writes that one who wishes to greet his fellow who does not wear a Kippa should preferably use a greeting other than "Shalom" (such as "Good morning") so that his fellow will not respond with "Shalom." It should be noted that our Sages emphasized the great importance of extending friendly greetings. The Mishna in Pirkeh Abot (4:15) urges us to greet all people cordially, and this applies even to sinners. Although the verse in Yeshayahu (48:22) warns, "En Shalom Amar Hashem La'reshaim" – "There is no peace, said G-d, to the wicked" – this is understood as a reference to the next world. In this world, we are to extend warm, friendly greetings to all, including the non-observant, and it is important for them to see religiously-committed Jews acting in a refined, courteous manner. In fact, it is told that when Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky (1891-1986) would walk in his neighborhood in Monsey, NY, he would make a point of warmly greeting everyone he encountered, Jew and non-Jew alike. After his passing, several nuns remarked that Rav Yaakov was the only one who warmly greeted them whenever he passed them – underscoring the importance of extending friendly greetings to everyone. Summary: One who happens to be bareheaded when he hears a Beracha should answer "Amen." Although it is preferable not to say the word "Shalom" while bareheaded, one may respond to a greeting with "Shalom" if he is greeted while he is not wearing a Kippa. When one initiates a greeting to his fellow who does not wear a Kippa, it is preferable to greet him in such a way that does not elicit a response with the word "Shalom" (such as "Good morning," as opposed to "Shalom Alechem"), though strictly speaking, it is permissible to elicit a response of "Shalom."

Link to video version of this interview: https://youtu.be/7CBHWJwmAJIMany people know Pessy from her popular Yiddish comedy videos, where she lovingly and hilariously captures the world of Hasidic women. She was one of the first creators to bring that world to social media through a female lens, and her sharp observations and humor have earned her a devoted following. But behind the comedy is a remarkable personal story.Pessy grew up in a Hasidic family in Monsey and spent much of her childhood carrying responsibilities that no child should have to carry. As the oldest sister, she watched her family struggle through the challenges surrounding her younger sister and felt an overwhelming need to hold everything together. She learned early on that being "good" and "perfect" seemed to be the safest way to survive difficult circumstances. In our conversation, Pessy speaks with extraordinary honesty about family, faith, rejection, and the pressure she felt to meet everyone's expectations. She shares how religion became a source of comfort, how she entered marriage determined to be the perfect wife, and how she concealed her own struggles because she didn't want to burden the people she loved. What makes Pessy's story so powerful is not simply what happened to her, but the way she reflects on it. She brings insight, humor, and compassion to experiences that could easily have left her bitter. Her story touches on themes that are deeply personal and yet almost universal: the desire to be accepted, the weight of responsibility, the loneliness of feeling misunderstood, and the long journey toward self-acceptance.Pessy's story is, in many ways, everyone's story. There are people whose cruelty makes us question humanity. But there are also people whose goodness raises an equally profound question. How is it possible for ordinary human beings to show such extraordinary compassion, forgiveness, and selflessness? Today I tell two remarkable stories. One is the ethical commitment of Magen David Adom, whose medics are taught to save every life - including those who have just committed acts of terror. The other is the heartbreaking story of eight-year-old Charlotte Herzberg of Monsey, New York. After Charlotte was tragically killed by her father's closest friend in a terrible accident, her parents publicly forgave him and transformed their grief into a movement encouraging forgiveness and reconciliation. Through the Shalom for Charlotte initiative, thousands of people have already shared stories of letting go of anger and choosing peace. If evil can spread from one person to another, perhaps goodness can too. Today, I invite you to honor Charlotte's memory in the same way her family has asked thousands of others to do: forgive someone, let go of a grudge, make peace where you can, or perform an unexpected act of kindness. The world has enough examples of hatred. It always needs another example of extraordinary goodness. Episode 80 of What Gives?—the Jewish Philanthropy Podcast from Jewish Funders Network, hosted by JFN President and CEO Andrés Spokoiny. In this episode, Andrés speaks with Mitch Silber, CEO of the Community Security Initiative and former Director of Intelligence Analysis for the NYPD. Mitch and Andrés talk about the changing security landscape facing Jewish communities in New York, across the United States, and around the world. Mitch shares how 9/11 led him from corporate finance into counterterrorism, what he learned helping build the NYPD's intelligence and counterterrorism capacity, and why the American Jewish community's approach to security changed so dramatically after the attacks in Pittsburgh, Poway, Jersey City, and Monsey. Also discussed are the range of threats facing Jewish institutions today, from white supremacists and Islamist extremists to violent anti-Israel actors, and the difficult questions that follow: what volunteers can and cannot do, when armed security is necessary, how local and national security organizations coordinate, and where philanthropy can make the most concrete difference. Take a listen.
