This women's class was presented on Tuesday, 29 Nissan 5777, April 25, 2017, at Ohr Chaim Shul, Monsey, NY. Rabbi Akiva taught his students to love. But they could still not learn to respect their colleagues. Why? There are people you like but you don't love; there are people you love but you may not like. There are people that you love and you like, and there are people, well, that you don't love and you don't like either. You love your parents. You love your brothers. You love your sisters. But you don't necessarily like them Sometimes you love your husband, but you have a hard time liking him. What is the difference between "liking" and "loving"? What is the difference between anti-Semites who hate Jews and Jews who dislike Jews? Why do we count both "day" and the "week" in the counting of the Omer? Why are there so many couples who fall in love, but after some time, they find themselves so far apart? The class explores two concepts: Love vs. respect. The Hebrew word for love, Ahavah, is the same numerical value as the word Echad, oneness. Love grows out of our oneness and sameness. Respect grows out of appreciating our differences. Both are crucial in relationships between families, communities and nations.
This women's class was presented on 11 Shevat 5777, February 7, 2017, at Ohr Chaim shul, in Monsey, NY.
It is a uniquely enigmatic Midrash. Avraham says to his wife Sarah upon arriving to Egypt, Please Say That You Are My Sister! And the Midrash says: From here we deduce that one may slaughter an animal on the Shabbos for an ill person. What is the connection between the two? The class explores three perspectives, the simple explanation; the insight by the Kesav Sofer; and a novel interpretation by the Lubavitcher Rebbe. It boils down to how Avraham analyzed the patterns of behavior that would be employed by the Egyptians, who would be willing to kill him but not to take a married woman. The class concludes with the analysis of the story on a psychological and spiritual level, in our own marriages, and in our relationship with G-d. This class was presented on Sunday morning Lech Lecha, 5 Cheshvan, 5777, November 10, 2016, at the Ohr Chaim shul in Monsey, NY.
Likkutei Torah Shir HaShirim Maamar Kaitzad Merakdim #2. This class explores what is the glue and mechanism to make a marriage work. We do three things at weddings: We place the new couple under a chupah; we dance; and we lift up the chasan and kallah. It turns out, these are not only traditions, but essentialingredientsfor the longevity of the marriage. These classes were presented during the daily morning class by Rabbi YY Jacobson, at the Or Chaim Shul, Monsey, NY, during the week of Chukas 5776, July 2016.
Likkutei Torah Shir HaShirim Maamar Kaitzad Merakdim #1. These classes were presented during the daily morning class by Rabbi YY Jacobson, at the Or Chaim Shul, Monsey, NY, during the week of Chukas 5776, July 2016.
Likkutei Torah Bamidbar Maamar Vayedaber #5. The class explores the meaning of "fearing G-d," according to Chassidic teachings, and two levels of fear, the higher and the lower. It also explores the process of Jewish marriage, where intimacy can only be followed the external framework of marriage represented by the betrothal ring. The class was presented in Or Chaim shul, in Monsey, NY, before Shavuos 5776, 2016.
Class Korach: This class was presented Sunday morning, 27 Sivan 5776, July 3, 2016, at Or Chaim Shul in Monsey, NY. It is probably one of the seemingly most absurd statements in the Talmud: Moses heard and he fell on his face. What was the rumor Moses heard? Rabbi Shmuel the son of Nachmani said in the name of Rabbi Yonoson: He heard that they suspected him of having relations with a married woman. But this seems insane, to say the least. Where did the Talmud get this from? The Torah merely states that Korach was challenging Moses leadership, not his fidelity? Furthermore, how could anybody take such a rumor seriously? How could Korach and his cronies spread such a ludicrous blood libel against the greatest prophet of all times, who gave the Jewish people all the laws against adultery and promiscuity, and about whom G-d said that he is loyal in my entire home? The class explores five perspectives, three of them from the Maharal of Prague. From his first interpretation we discover that the Talmud was not offering a new story here; rather it was explaining the depth and sophistication behind Korachs mutiny. Korachs argument was not hollow and brute; it was profound, and hence managed to attract the hearts of 250 Jewish prominent men. His argument is not to be easily dismissed; it is a wise viewpoint that requires deliberation. The argument was this: Moses is disrupting a sacred marriage. The concept of a Moshe, of a Rebbe in Jewish life according to Korach, is corrupt and dangerous.

At last, the great moment had arrived. For forty years, the Jewish People had wandered together through the desert. The older generation had already passed on. Even beloved Miriam was no more. By now, under the leadership of Moses, the young nation of Israel was finally ready to enter the Promised Land. But an incident occurred that would transform the nation's destiny. The people run out of water. They cry to Moses, who turns to G-d. G-d commands Moses to produce water from a rock miraculously, by speaking to it. Instead, Moses hits the rock twice, which indeed produces water. It is the most subtle and enigmatic sin in the entire Torah, yet because of it Moses greatest dream is shattered and he is denied entry into the Land of Israel. What exactly was Moses sin? There are dozens of divergent interpretations. The common denominator behind all of them is that somehow this was a rebellion against G-d or a demonstration of an apparent flaw in Moses. But maybe we have to read the story differently? It was the Rogatchover Gaon, Rabbi Yosef Rosen (1858-1936), who reframes the story completely. Mosess error consisted of using Aarons wooden staff, rather than his own made of rock. As a result, Jewish women did not have a mikvah for a while and peace in the home was effected. The class explores this original insight and shows its parallels in the teachings of Kabablah and Chassidus.
