Listen to Pastor Gawel's sermon for August 24, 2025, taken from Colossians 3:1-11. The post Set Your Mind on Things Above – Sermon for August 24, 2025 appeared first on St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
Colossians 3:2 encourages us to set our minds on “things above.” We do this by making the conscious decision to think truth-filled thoughts and take every idea captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5; Philippians 4:8-9). The more we set our minds on truth, the more we will enjoy the reality of our new identity in Christ and God's love for us (Romans 12:2).
In today's Spiritual Foundation Episode, I talk about Colossians 3: 1-11. I share how we are called to set our eyes on things above. I also share how that doesn't mean ignoring the reality of today but living into it differently. Show Notes and Resources.

In this podcast episode, I'm gonna be discussing the Bible scripture Colossians 3-2 set your mind on things above and not earthly things. This particular scripture has multiple different meanings to it. And today we're gonna discuss what those meetings actually are. And how this scripture describes exactly where I'm in my life right now as far as not following society standards. Or wanting to be a part of society standards anymore. I am all about God standards and what God wants for me. I am not trying to be a part of society standards. I am living in my life, right, maintaining my morals, values, principles, and ethics, critical, thinking, common sense, common judgment, weighing the pros and cons, and the consequences, repercussions, and karma of my actions, behavior, choices, and decisions.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/finding-your-inner-peace-and-tranquility--5271234/support.
Welcome to the Grace Coach Podcast! Mike and Kevin share their insights from the Book of Colossians as they dive into Chapter 3:1-17. 3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
In this message, Pastor Tony explores the significant role of emotions in our lives, noting that both humans and God experience them, though human emotions are impacted by sin. Drawing from the Psalms, especially Psalm 13, he highlights how emotions can be raw and honest, demonstrating that God is a safe recipient for all our feelings. Tony emphasizes three principles for navigating our emotional lives: applying wisdom to our responses, viewing emotions as gauges (information) rather than guides (directives), and allowing God's Word to speak truth to our feelings.Subscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Download a copy of the Exodus JournalVisit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.comSubscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Visit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.com

Colossians 3 is a hinge chapter. After correcting theology, Paul shifts to this question: Now that you've been raised with Christ—what does that mean for how you live? Paul gives two clear commands: seek the things above (desire) and set your mind on things above (discipline). Seeking is about what you value. Setting is about the choices you make. This isn't about resolutions—it's about reordering your whole life around Jesus. Paul says to put to death what doesn't reflect that—sexual sin, impurity, idolatry, anger. And then, he calls us to put on what does: compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, and above all, love. This isn't behavior modification; it's about living a life that reflects your new reality. The Holy Spirit doesn't want to visit your life; He wants to dwell in it.What are the things that you need to put off and the things that you need to put on to represent and reflect your new hidden life in Christ? 5Forthose who live according to the flesh set their minds onthe things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds onthe things of the Spirit.6For to setthe mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.7For the mind that is set on the flesh ishostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law;indeed, it cannot.8Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in factthe Spirit of God dwells in you.Anyone who does not havethe Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.10But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.11If the Spirit ofhim who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus[a]from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodiesthrough his Spirit who dwells in you.

It's that time of year again! What are your resolutions for 2025? This Sunday, we will explore how the apostle Paul might answer this question. He would tell us to set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth (Col. 3:2). But what does that mean? And how do we live out this biblical principle in our daily lives? Come Sunday to find out!Questions:1. What are some New Year's resolutions that you've done in the past? Why did you pick those? 2. Why do you think it's so hard to set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth?3. Why do you think we spend so little time thinking about how great heaven will be?4. If we meditated more on heaven, do you think it would be easier to love others more? Why or why not?5. This week, what are some practical ways that you can live "heaven on earth" by loving others in your life?
December 29, 2024 In this week's sermon Brett Romisch admonished us to remember to set our minds on Christ, who is seated in heavenly places, so that we may be earthly good.

God's Word declares that the mind set on the flesh is death and the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. The unredeemed, fleshly mind is hostile toward God and unable to subject itself to His law of righteousness. However, through the awakening power of the gospel, a lost person can be given a new mind, alive in the Spirit. Once made alive in Christ, we joyfully concur with the law of God in our hearts. Yet for as long as we live in our earthly bodies, fleshly lusts will be at war with our soul. Praise God that the weapons of our warfare are divinely powerful!

In “Set Your Minds on Things Above,” Pastor Robey encourages believers to focus on their identity in Christ amidst the uncertainties of life and the political landscape. Drawing inspiration from the story of King Josiah's revival in Israel, he emphasizes the importance of clinging to God's Word, praying for our leaders, and voting with a kingdom perspective rather than succumbing to fear and anxiety. As the congregation prepares to join a broader series called Jesus is King, Pastor Robey calls for unity in faith, urging everyone to set their hearts on heavenly truths and to live out their identity as citizens of God's eternal kingdom. Through scripture and prayer, he invites all to find peace and purpose, reminding them that their ultimate hope lies not in earthly powers but in Jesus Christ, our King.
