Today we've got a great conversation for you: Morgan Mercer is the CEO of Vantage Point, a VR product that's being used by big companies like Ikea and Hyundai to teach soft skills and also to offer Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as Sexual Harassment training. It turns out, Morgan's major insight is that VR is an unprecedented tool for “walking a mile in someone else's shoes”, which means that it's an ingenious way to teach empathy. She's been featured in over 150 major publications and Vantage Point's tagline “While technology can cause apathy, immersive technology can drive empathy and fundamentally make the world more human” is something I deeply resonate with. ➡️ https://www.tryvantagepoint.com/ ➡️ Highlights: https://rosspalmer.com/morgan-mercer ➡️ Follow me on Instagram: @therosspalmer ➡️ Subscribe on YouTube: @therosspalmer
Way back in April of 2019 I spoke with today’s guest about virtual reality and sexual harassment. Some things have changed since then (I’m looking at you the pandemic), some things are the same (I’m looking at you ineffective sexual harassment training). Either way, we are very pleased to with us again today Morgan Mercer. Morgan is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Vantage Point (https://www.tryvantagepoint.com/), an organization that strives to leverage virtual reality immersive technology to tackle complex training challenges, such as sexual harassment training and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Prior to founding Vantage Point, she concurrently served as the Head of Digital for an e-commerce startup and as an Analyst for a digital agency where she has worked on high-profile contracts focused on attitude change and behavior change within the domain of complex social issues. She has been featured on the BBC, in British Vogue, Bloomberg, The Guardian, Wired, VentureBeat, and many other media outlets. In this episode, I am happy to share a few minutes of my recent interview Morgan Mercer. Morgan is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Vantage Point (https://www.tryvantagepoint.com), an organization that strives to leverage virtual reality (VR) immersive technology to tackle complex training such as sexual harassment training and diversity, equity, and inclusion. In this shorter episode, we'll look at how training has changed since the pandemic, what lessons we have learned, and how what we'll need to remember going forward. The rest of the podcast, which will focus on VR sexual harassment and DEI training will be aired next Tuesday, April 13th. Remember you can always follow us on Twitter at @HRWorksPodcast (https://bit.ly/3l0dzP3), and we are also now available on Spotify (http://spoti.fi/3t8of13) and Audible (http://adbl.co/30uhdaq).
Fact: 54% of women report workplace harassment. A staggering 64% of women are exposed to gender-based micro aggressions, with non-white women experiencing it more than anyone else. But here’s the kicker, nearly all sexual harassment or discrimination at work goes unreported and those who do, often see zero benefit. If you’ve ever had diversity or anti-harassment training at work, you’ll know that they are long overdue for a shakeup. And these statistics prove their outdated powerpoint and video presentations just aren’t working. Despite mandatory sexual harassment trainings in many states across the U.S., cases of harassment are still on the rise. Morgan Mercer recognized the critical need for education that bridged the empathy gap and she’s doing just that with her immersive enterprise training company, Vantage Point. Morgan’s technology is teaching “soft” skills like kindness and empathy through a live 360-degree virtual reality experience where users watch harassment unfold before them and have to make decisions on how to respond. In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn sits down with Morgan to discuss how she’s using technology to transform workplace training, how to drive empathy and fundamentally make the world more human, and what’s in store for the future. You can't always control what happens to you, but you can always control how you react to it. This is the power of mental reframing. If you want to change something, be it how you feel, how you do things, or what you believe, begin by intentionally changing your thoughts and choosing to reframe how you see your reality. Your thoughts about any situation that happens to you are always more powerful than the situation itself. Morgan Mercer has been able to reframe her reality in order to stay grounded in the face of sexism, ageism, and racism as a young minority female CEO. After spending years caring too much about external validation and other people's opinions, Morgan discusses how she built up the confidence within herself by acknowledging her own power, and surrounding herself with other powerful female allies and mentors. Today, she is using her power to help others understand diverse perspectives. She is the Founder and CEO of Vantage Point, an innovative Virtual Reality training platform designed to build empathy and help companies prevent harassment and bullying. We also discuss: How to have productive and open conversations around hard topics like #BlackLivesMatter How to own your mistakes without giving up your power The importance of building powerful female communities Join a tribe of powerful female leaders. Get a free demo at Namely.com/podcast Have you ever been in a situation at work where you witnessed something uncomfortable but you didn’t say anything? Or have you seen leaders exhibit behaviors that are rude or offensive but you were unsure what to do about it? I’ve been there and it was highly uncomfortable. In fact, the situation still bothers me to this day. Here’s the CliffNotes version: Very early in my career, I watched a VP come on strong to a coworker, he befriended her and gave her some additional opportunities at work. Then he loaned her money and they started dating “in secret.” Eventually he had a meltdown and abandoned her. Her career stalled and she ultimately quit. Guess what, everyone? Nobody ever got mad at that VP. Not a single person! Well, that’s not true. I started asking questions of her, but I didn't know what to say. On today's show I'm talking to Morgan Mercer, founder and CEO of Vantage Point. She is an expert in this field and I am hopeful we can all learn a thing or two from her. Vantage Point uses virtual reality (yes, you read that correctly) to immerse employees, leaders, and managers into scenarios just like the one I described. They then train and test the same individuals on how to respond to difficult situations at work, appropriately. If you want to hear some of the best ways to handle sexual harassment at work and how virtual reality is paving the way to help us learn how to deal with these scenarios with compassion and empathy, then sit back and listen to this episode of Let’s Fix Work. In this episode, you’ll hear: What standalone virtual reality is and how it can help with anti-sexual harassment training How virtual reality scenarios help people allocate all of their resources to solving an issue and how it helps people to translate feelings into information Why and how Vantage Point started with anti-sexual harassment training The idea that technology can teach you to be compassionate and can teach you empathy, but can it actually change behaviors and change attitudes through this type of training? Why sexual harassment training through virtual reality is important for employers, what they learn, and how they can set future training scenarios Morgan shares some stories of how Vantage Point’s technology has been shown to change behaviors, outcomes, or moved organizations forward Morgan shares her personal why, including why she is interested in fixing work from this perspective Why Morgan does the work she does: “Women don't speak out unless they speak up in unison. When you realize the level of inequality that so many people live with and face across the board, from economic background to various genders, their ethnicity to whatever it may be, it's really impossible for me not to care. When I leave the world one day I want to look back and I want to feel like I made an impact.” Morgan Mercer, Founder and CEO, Vantage Point Resources from this episode: Thanks to our sponsor: Namely.com/podcast Tryvantagepoint.com Can VR teach us how to deal with sexual harassment? Can VR make us more empathetic? How Virtual Reality Is Helping To Empower Women Can Sexual Harassment Training Come of Age?

Organizations are working hard to meet the challenge of sexual harassment in the workplace head-on. However, the efficacy of sexual harassment training leaves a lot to be desired. How do employers make this training stick? Part of it boils down to creating an emotional investment in trainees, a subject that our guest excels in. Morgan Mercer is the Chief Executive Officer of Vantage Point, an organization that strives to leverage virtual reality immersive technology to tackle complex training challenges, such as sexual harassment training. Prior to founding Vantage Point, she concurrently served as the Head of Digital for an e-commerce startup and an Analyst for a digital agency where she has worked on high-profile contracts focused on attitude change and behavior change within the domain of complex social issues. She has been featured on the BBC, in British Vogue, Bloomberg, The Guardian, Wired, VentureBeat, and many other media outlets.
In the post-#MeToo era, men who would never consider saying a harassing word or venture a grope are now asking themselves “can I hug a co-worker anymore?” **** “Can I put my arm around someone in a photo?” “Can I have dinner with a female co-worker...alone?” For the most part, workplace sexual harassment training includes the same rote video, awkward role-playing scenarios or yawn-inducing speaker, and is not remotely equipped to end a culture of enabling harassers or dismissing claims. What kinds of training tools will create a true change in workplace culture? The kind that helps workers and supervisors comprehend the nuances of what sexual harassment looks like and how the power dynamics of workplace sexual harassment can damage the careers and well beings of those harassed? Morgan Mercer, CEO of enterprise training platform Vantage Point, believes the answers to these questions, as well as more nuanced insights about the nature of workplace sexual harassment, lies in virtual reality. Listen to my convo with Mercer as we discuss why corporate sexual harassment training has for the most part failed women, and how immersive experiences like virtual reality may be the key to unlocking empathy, action and change. How can you take your employee training to the next level? Morgan Mercer is the founder and CEO of Vantage Point, the next frontier in immersive enterprise training. They use virtual reality to bring situations to life and create truly meaningful and impactful training around topics that matter. How it works The biggest downfall of existing training is that it’s impossible to truly convey feelings through a 2D video or a coaching session. The biggest thing about virtual reality is that it’s experiential. When you put on the headset, you’re immersed in another environment. You can form relationships with the characters and truly feel what it’s like to have that elephant in the room where somebody says something uncomfortable and tie those feelings directly to your actions. What did you do? What will you do? The program is also able to leverage things commonly seen in the gaming community, like positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement, as well as user agency where the environment and story unfold based on the actions you take. It’s a more true-to-life way to learn. You can step into somebody else's shoes, see what they see, and experience in real-time how your actions affect your environment. The program’s origins Morgan shares how she made a joke that inadvertently hurt someone close to her. It was the first time she had been called out and it caused her to think: Why would I say this and hurt somebody that I care about, knowingly or unknowingly? How do I form my opinions, and how does that play out and manifest itself in the way I treat other people? And she realized that it’s not that problems like sexual harassment and gender-based violence and racism don’t exist — it’s that we need to have personal experience with the problem to want to learn about it. And creating that relationship with the problem is what virtual reality can do. Find out more Vantage Point is deployed right now across the United States and in Europe.
