Description: Today's guest, Shannon Watts, has come to be known as a formidable force in the world. As the founder of Moms Demand Action, the largest grassroots movement against gun violence formed after the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy in 2012, her activism has mobilized millions of moms to successfully pass over 500 gun safety laws. As Amy poignantly stated, Shannon's work “has legitimately made a tangible impact on the safety of my kids in their classrooms”, demonstrating the profound significance of Shannon's contributions. Watts has since shifted her time and attention to empowering women, whom she credits as the real changemakers in any movement. She has founded the Firestarter School, a platform designed to help women reclaim their power and has a forthcoming book, Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age, releasing in the summer of 2025, which explores the necessary elements needed to ignite a fire in your life and pursue your passion and purpose. Thought-provoking Quotes: When you get involved in something like activism, it helps you realize that you have all of this untapped power. And it does give you the audacity to become a firestarter, to prioritize your desires over your obligations. – Shannon Watts Right out of college, I married my college sweetheart at 23-years-old. By the time I was 29, I had three children. I have a job I don't love. By my mid-thirties, I realized, this is not the person I would have chosen to be. I was having a difficult time acknowledging that I was living a life that was not true to me. – Shannon Watts So many women keep collecting new fuel, acquiring new skills, waiting for the other pieces to come together. And we're prepared when the opportunity presents itself. – Amy Hardin Society shoulders women with so many burdens so she doesn't have room to explore her desires. If you're going to claim space, raise your voice, you are going to get blowback. The direct proportion of how much you can grow your fire corresponds to how much blowback you're willing to withstand. – Shannon Watts Remind yourself of your wins everyday, whether they're your wins or wins for what you want to see in the world. Give yourself hope and affirmation. – Shannon Watts Fighting for your safety and your rights is a form of self-care and a form of protection for other people. – Shannon Watts Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Camino Made (B.T. This week, we're re-airing our fantastic conversation with Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, where we discuss her inspiring new book Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age. Tune in for a powerful discussion on activism, passion, and the power of stepping into your purpose!Shannon Watts is the founder of Moms Demand Action, a six-million-member organization she describes as “maybe the world's largest real-life field experiment for what happens when you show women how their abilities and their burning desires and their values align, and how they come alive and can achieve things they never imagined possible.” We are thrilled to have her on the show today to talk about her upcoming book, Fired Up.We talk about how both misogyny and motherhood shape women's journey to, and through, advocacy. We discuss how to withstand blowback and the discomfort that comes with growth, including celebrating small wins and “finding your people.” We also touch on how social media has allowed women to bypass traditional media gatekeepers. Our conversation with Shannon about the intersection of motherhood, feminism, and activism is one that will keep us fueled for a long time. We hope you enjoy it.Resources:Pre-order a copy of Fired Up and sign up for Shannon's free Firestarter University courseCheck out Shannon's book and other books we've recommended on the podcast in the Brave Writer Bookshop. And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]This evening, I sat down with my dear friend, the brilliant Shannon Watts, author of the Playing with Fire Substack (among many other hats), for a live discussion on why we both strongly believe the time has come for Sen. Chuck Schumer to step down as leader, why we're supporting a boycott of contributions to Senate Democrats until they force him to do so, and what all Democrats can do to make this happen.Shannon and I walked through the understandable concerns some of our fellow Democrats have felt over this effort and why, after all our discussion and introspection, we still believe Mr. Schumer needs to step down.If you're unsure of why so many of us want Mr. Schumer to step down, I've outlined my reasons in this essay. And if you, too, are angry over our current situation with Democratic leadership and believe Mr. Schumer needs to step down, please sign our petition and join the 42,000 (and growing) Democrats (including a number of elected officals) who are calling on Mr. Schumer step aside for the good of our democracy.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. In this episode of Senior Bitches, MJ interviews Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, and one of the most kick ass women on the planet. Taking on the NRA and gun reform legislation she has grown her organization from seventy five people to over ten million strong. They discuss her journey as an activist, the importance of reflection and growth in the face of adversity, and the current state of America, especially for women. They explore themes of apathy, the need for community support, and the significance of standing up for marginalized groups, all while emphasizing the necessity of taking action despite imperfections. Shannon shares how her possey of activist ‘soccer moms' took on a giant like Starbucks and changed their policy over open permitless carry by saying no to Mocha Frappachinos and muffins by the thousands. She also addresses the challenges of facing intimidation and threats while advocating for change, and reflects on America's complex relationship with gun culture. Finally, she advocates for empowering women in politics as a crucial step towards a more compassionate and effective democracy. More About Shannon Watts: Shannon Watts is the founder of Moms Demand Action, the largest grassroots group fighting gun violence in the U.S. Known as the ‘summoner of women's audacity,' she has been named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People, a Forbes 50 over 50 Changemaker, and a GlamourWoman of the Year. During the 2024 election, she organized the largest Zoom gathering in history, mobilizing over 200K voters and raising over $11 million in support of the Kamala Harris campaign and co-hosted the weekly Women Wednesdays for Harris calls with Indivisible. Helping to redefine what's possible when audacious women unite to drive change, she writes regularly about culture, politics and women's issues for her Substack, Playing with Fire, and outlets like The Washington Post, Elle, Time, The 19th. This episode is being published the day after the U.S. presidential election. Tension, stress, and fears are running high. No matter which candidate wins, nearly half the voting population will be very upset. How do we navigate our relationships during this time? How do we move through the world in a thoughtful way? That's the basis of our conversation today. We focus on the role of consensus in maintaining rights. While aggressive action might be needed to achieve rights–like the Civil War and Suffragettes protests– we argue that consensus is what's needed to maintain them. We discuss how consensus is slowly developed over time through countless conversations and interactions. We give you specific questions you can use to start difficult conversations, including conversations with yourself about your own beliefs. We also discuss how you can get involved in issues you care about and make a difference that way.We hope this episode provides empowerment, hope, and community to our listeners during this stressful, often overwhelming, time.Resources:Start a free trial of CTCmath.com to try the math program that's sure to grab and keep your child's attention.Check out Julie's Instagram post about thinking around the election Listen to our episode with Shannon Watts: #235 Why Moms Make the Best Advocates Check out the Brave Writer Practice Pages Explore the Brave Writer Book ShopSign up for our Text Message Pod Ring to get podcast updates and more!Send us podcast topic ideas by texting us: +1 (833) 947-3684Connect with Julie:Instagram: @juliebravewriterThreads: @juliebravewriterTwitter: @bravewriterFacebook: facebook.com/bravewriterConnect with Melissa:Website: melissawiley.comSubstack: melissawiley.substack.comInstagram: @melissawileybooksTwitter: @melissawileyProduced by NOVA Media

How science can be transformed into policy? One of the seemingly intractable issues when it comes to legislative change in the US is gun control. One reason policy change is so difficult, is the US specific evidence vacuum, but that's beginning to change. We're joined by Louis Klarevas, an academic at the University of Colombia and author of the book “Rampage Nation, securing america from gun violence" and Shannon Watts, from Moms Demand Action which is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. Even when there is evidence, the trade-offs needed for legislative change can still paralyse policy makers. Citizen assemblies, a form of democratic participation that asks the public for their views, has helped clarify some key healthcare issues, from assisted dying in Jersey, to abortion access in Ireland. Rebecca McKee from the Institute of Government argues they could be used to fix the NHS, and joins us to explain how. What prevents you from speaking up?When you were younger, what was your experience when you spoke up? Were you heard, or were you silenced, ignored, or punished? The echoes of earlier wounds often shape our ability to speak up. Our ability to speak up is often influenced by the burden of past experiences, whether it's in meetings, public forums, or one-on-one conversations, speaking up can feel like a significant risk when past relational traumas resurface.Even the most confident leaders may carry fears of rejection, judgment, or failure, stemming from previous experiences of not being heard or valued. We may worry about being misunderstood or feel that our words lack significance.Embracing your voice, even in the face of uncertainty, is a transformative act. It's a journey towards building more courage and leading in alignment with your values.Speaking with grounded confidence isn't just about exerting authority; it's about fostering trust, connection, and respect within yourself and with those you lead.Today's guest lives the principles she teaches on speaking up and showing up with more power, especially for those who hold identities outside of dominant cultural norms. Years of exit polls tell us that the outcome of this election may come down to white women who, at 40%, make up the majority of the entire electorate. But what can be done about the fact that white women have a track record of voting more conservatively in the majority of presidential elections since 1950, even when a fellow white woman was an option? This week, host Sarah Jones talks to activist and organizer Shannon Watts about the often overlooked power white women hold in politics and why it's so consistently leveraged against their own interests. You can follow Sarah Jones, see pod updates, and respond to AWHY prompts @yesimsarahjones on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. This podcast was produced in collaboration with The Meteor.

And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]Last night, I was honored and delighted to join a phenomenal group of brilliant leaders and hundreds of thousands of women across the country in support of the Vice President on the first Women for Harris National Organizing Call. You can watch the organizing call in its entirety right here, and I strongly recommend doing so. Speakers included Women for Harris Director Rhonda Foxx, Sen. Laphonza Butler, Chelsea Clinton, Min Jin Lee, Yvette Nicole Brown, Shannon Watts, Ai-Jen Poo, Glynda Carr, and so many more.I honestly did not expect to cry so much, but when Ms. Lee began telling her story and teared up, I completely lost it. By the time Ms. Clinton reminded us all of the history of women seeking the White House, I was a mess.It was a bad night for mascara and a great night for democracy.Below are my remarks:Good evening! My name is Charlotte Clymer, my pronouns are she/her, I'm a writer and activist, and I am so excited to be part of this historic gathering of women across the country. Now, look, I'm not gonna repeat to y'all what the brilliant and eloquent women who spoke before me stated, nor do I have the eloquence and brilliance of the women who will speak over the remainder of this evening.I'm just gonna tell y'all a quick story about why I proudly support Vice President Harris.I am a proud American, a proud Texan, a proud military veteran, a proud trans woman, and a proud Democrat. And I have found that there a lot of folks, including Donald Trump and J.D. Vance, who want to place me in a specific box. They say I'm too queer to be a proud military veteran. They say a trans woman like me can't be a Christian and a strong person of faith as I am.They say women like me don't belong in America.Well, here's what I have to say to that: thank goodness our leader, Vice President Harris, has common sense and believes no American, no human being, belongs in a box.A little over four years ago, a number of rightwing extremists took a picture of me from a public event and attempted to harass me online. They wanted me to be ashamed of how I look as a trans woman. Now, just like the women I admire—women like my grandmother, women like Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett from my home state of Texas, women like Vice President Harris—am I going to give these sad and insecure people that kinda power over me?No. I don't have time for that. I love how I look. I know I'm beautiful. So, I wrote a thread explaining that, and I offered an open hope that these sad and insecure people will someday have the kind of peace and comfort in their own skin as I have in mine. One of the first public figures to respond to that thread was then-Senator Kamala Harris. She gave me support. She gave me encouragement. She made me feel seen. And in that moment, she sent a clear message that supporting her means supporting the basic concept that all of us are worthy to be who we are authentically.I want to be clear: there were no incentives for her here. I hadn't endorsed her. I hadn't talked with her campaign. It wasn't like she was gonna fundraise off this moment. She did it because Vice President Harris is the kind of leader who fights for every American. She fights for the military veteran who comes back from war with horrific wounds. She fights for the woman turned away from life-saving abortion access. She fights for the public school teacher who's overworked and underpaid. She fights for every child, every senior, every single American. She fights for all of us.Donald Trump and J.D. Vance are gonna throw everything they got at her—every cruel remark, every disgusting sexist and racist trope, every bit of vile—and they're gonna find out the hard way that it just isn't enough. And why is that? Because we have a clear strategy here. All we have to do is follow the example of Vice President Harris. She is a leader who builds bridges, who invites tough conversations, who always embraces discomfort as a gift for growth. If we follow her example, if we make every phone call, if we knock on every door, if we invite tough conversations with our friends and family and neighbors who are on the fence in this election, I guarantee you, on everything I hold dear, that Kamala Harris will be the 47th President of the United States.Thank god this is our leader. Let's follow her example. Let's go win this thing. To find out how to volunteer and elect our first woman president and save democracy from Trump and Vance and Project 2025, text WOMEN to 30330.And donate to the historic and exciting campaign of Vice President Harris right here: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/charlotteforharrisCharlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. In 2018, Mandana Dayani watched as the family-separation policy played out at the southern border. It was deeply unsettling. Her family fled as refugees from Iran to the US as an authoritarian regime took over. She asked herself: how could a country that saved my life do this? Mandana quickly learned that civic engagement was the only way things could meaningfully change. Enter: I am a voter., Mandana's org that's on a mission to rebrand voter identity to get young people to the polls. In this episode of 9 to 5ish, Mandana shares: The culture shock of being a refugee in the US How she went from being a lawyer to a brand strategist to the co-founder of a political org The advice she got from Mom's Demand Action founder, Shannon Watts (spoiler alert: women get sh*t done) How trust in existing brands and celebrities jumpstarted I am a voter.
In this episode, Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, joins 19th reporter, Jennifer Gerson, to discuss the powerful role of White suburban women in the fight against gun violence. Having played a key role in shifting the culture of gun violence, Shannon knows how White women can best serve movements that disproportionately impact communities of color. Shannon Watts: The founder of Moms Demand Action, Shannon Watts was named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People, Glamour's Woman of the Year and Forbes 50 Over 50. Watts served as a full-time volunteer leader for Moms Demand Action for 11 years. Under her watch, the organization accumulated over 10 million supporters and established a chapter in every state. Volunteers have stopped the NRA's priority legislation in statehouses 90 percent of the time every year for the past decade; passed over 500 gun safety laws across the country; changed corporate policies; educated millions of Americans about secure gun storage; and elected thousands of gun sense candidates to office, including hundreds of its own volunteers. She is also a self-proclaimed "Type A Buddhist."
Shannon Watts had been a stay-at-home mom for five years when she turned on the TV to see horror unfolding at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. After witnessing the aftermath of the murder of 20 children and 6 adults on that cold day in December, Shannon knew she had to channel her rage into action. What started as a Facebook page called One Million Moms for Gun Control eventually became Moms Demand Action, one of the leading advocacy groups in the country fighting our country's gun violence epidemic. In this episode of She Pivots, Shannon recounts growing up with ADHD and finding her passion for journalism; leaving behind her successful PR career to prioritize her kids; the lessons learned from losing the vote on universal background checks; the importance of diversity in leadership; and what's next for her after stepping down as CEO of Moms Demand Action. In this final part of my interview with Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts, we get a look at what's coming up for her--and how that might not involve being in the public eye at all after 11 years of being 'the tip of the spear' as a common sense gun law advocate. I also ask her what's she's reading, watching, listening to, drinking in her morning cup, and what she'd have for dinner tonight if she could have anything in the world. We talked about: - Her voracious love of podcasts (including a shortlist of her faves) - Knowing that it's time to shift into a different way of being, but not yet knowing exactly what that looks like - The reality show she watches until the wee hours whenever her husband is out of town Visit Shannon at shannonwatts.substack.com. In the second part of my interview with Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, author of "Fight Like a Mother, and host of the Substack newsletter "Playing with Fire" (where she addresses overlooked topics head on, such as ADHD in women and girls and the benefits of hormone therapy for relief of menopause symptoms), we get into the mindset side of writing. We covered: - Reckoning with the enormity of needing to produce 60,000+ words for a book - The "small miracle" or crystallizing a thought in a way you hadn't been able to articulate before - How getting reiki helps her write - Shifting out of perfectionism and into flow - The huge difference in the lived experience between Gen X women and their mothers - Taking aim at mom guilt - The woo woo retreat that almost made her run for the door, but turned out to be a much-needed entryway to being playful Visit Shannon at shannonwatts.substack.com. This week I am talking with badass advocate, author, Substacker, and "summoner of women's audacity," Shannon Watts. Shannon is the founder of Moms Demand Action, the grassroots movement for common sense gun reform that grew to include more than 10 million members who have helped pass over 500 gun safety laws across the country. She's also the author of "Fight Like a Mother", and her opinion pieces have been published in the Washington Post, Elle, Time, and more. Shannon has also been named Glamour's Woman of the Year and one of Time's 100 Most Influential People. And she's working on a new book about women in leadership that'll be out in the summer of 2025. It was an honor to talk with her and we really broke it down, covering: - Knowing when it's time to transition out of what you've been doing - ADHD and how its effects have changed as she's gotten older - Switching gears from being a very public person who had to keep her private life private (to not feed the trolls) to a private person who talks about private things (menopause, ADHD) publicly - Honoring the desire to have more information (and to share that information once you find it) - The incredible origin story of Moms Demand Action (or what I call, "the Facebook post heard 'round the world) - Her standing desk fail Visit Shannon at shannonwatts.substack.com. Unlike his critics, NFL kicker Harrison Butker is fearless. The Chiefs star used an invitation to deliver the commencement address at Benedictine College to spread a pro-God, pro-family message. Apparently, that's not allowed in today's society, not even at a Catholic institution. Now, Butker is facing backlash from feminists, the NFL, and even the municipality of Kansas City. Jason dives into the controversy and calls out those protesting the loudest, like Shannon Watts, a gun violence prevention activist and the founder of Moms Demand Action, who used the debate to blame guns and the Second Amendment. Butker espoused common sense. The fact that his statements have been deemed controversial is proof of lethal delusion. Delano Squires joins “Fearless” to share his perspective on Butker's love letter to common sense and a biblical worldview. Go to https://BlazeTV.com and subscribe today! Shannon Watts is the founder of Moms Demand Action, a six-million member organization she describes as “maybe the world's largest real life field experiment for what happens when you show women how their abilities and their burning desires and their values align, and how they come alive and can achieve things they never imagined possible.” We are thrilled to have her on the show today to talk about her upcoming book, “Fight Like a Mother.”We talk about how both misogyny and motherhood shape women's journey to, and through, advocacy.
