You might be right.Lesley Logan 2:15 Happy 10 years with us Bayon. Okay, so on this day, pet parents and their beloved dogs spend some extra quality time together. Every dog owner can vouch for how affectionate and loyal their dogs are, in almost every case, they are right. However, on Bond With Your Dog Day, it's time to show your beloved friend how much you love and care for them. The day is celebrated with a host of activities and find new ways to connect with your dogs. Happy Bond With Your Dog Day to you and your dogs, and if you don't have one go to a shelter and read to one, spend some time with one. Learn, if you're in Vegas, it's too late to get the dog walking privileges at SPCA until the fall. But like, go do it. I am obsessed with walking dogs at the SPCA. It is so hard for me. It's so hard for me to leave them. I like, have a really hard time. I literally can do three and I have to go because then I start to get really, I'm like, I have to walk all of them if I do anymore. But it really, it, it will bring so much joy to your life. They have so much unconditional love. Some of them are so scared, and they just, they just take some warming up too. We are recording this before I go to Europe the day before, and I told Brad, when we come back, if those two girls are still at the shelter, we have to figure out if we can foster them together. So Miss Coco is a Terrier. She's an American Stafford Terrier, Bulldog. She's an American Bully, and she is like, shorty a little bit squat, and she's so cute.Lesley Logan 4:03 She she's more squat than August was. Brad Crowell 4:05 Yeah, she's almost five years old. She's about 65 pounds, and she is female. She. Hi, I'm Miss Coco. I'm known for my friendly and sweet nature. I love spending time with people, and I'm always ready for a cuddle or playtime. I do need some special care for my skin and allergies, but I promise I'm worth it. I'm looking for a forever home where I can share all my love and joy. I have past experience with other dogs and older kids. Adopting me means gaining a loyal friend who will always be there to brighten your day. Let's make wonderful memories together. And you've walked her. Lesley Logan 4:29 I mean this girl, I've walked her twice. Walk is a strong word. We went outside, we smelled the roses, and we sat down, and she just got in my lap at all, all those pounds of her, and just wanted me to pet her like she just wants to lay on your couch. So if you're someone who, like, needs a little bit routine in your life, but doesn't really want to commit to, like, long dog walks, like I do, she doesn't want them. She just wants to be on your couch with you. Just wants to be held. And by the way, her skin stuff, I walked her, she's got, like, dried, like, dandruff. Like, it was not a big deal.Brad Crowell 5:04 So like, and I bet, like, with the right, you know, food types.Lesley Logan 5:08 They have her on a special food thing. So I didn't even notice it the second week, a week later. So, like, I think she's great. I also, like, don't be afraid of those older dog. And even if she's not there. Brad Crowell 5:16 She's not very far yet. Lesley Logan 5:17 Look at between four and six, like, a lot of times. Like, she so she's what's called the potty dog. Means she will not pee in her kennel. Will not she will hold it from the time they walk her at the last night for the next morning, that is like, 12 hours, like, so maybe it's a little less than that, but still, like. Brad Crowell 5:39 Well, they close at six and open at six. Lesley Logan 5:39 Yeah, I get yeah. So anyways, yeah. So definitely take a look at her. But I just mean, like, from dogs four to five, there's, like, something special about them. They are out of the puppy stage. They're still very trainable. They still have a lot of life in them. So now, Sadie, can we read Sadie? Brad Crowell 5:50 Only one at a time. We're doing one at a time.Lesley Logan 5:52 Ah, okay. Are we adding this to every show? Brad Crowell 5:54 We might, maybe we will. You tell us if you want us to feature a dog, but. Lesley Logan 5:58 So here's the thing I wonder, like, but if they're not there, will people go and get a different one? Brad Crowell 6:03 Well, here's the reality. We are obviously in Nevada. We're in Las Vegas specifically, and we're specifically talking about dogs that are at the Nevada SPCA. So if that is not applicable to you, which I imagine that's the majority of you, then just look up an SPCA near you.Lesley Logan 6:17 Yeah, they don't take government like the local ones do not take any government funding. They're always locally funded. They're no kill, and they're pristine. How they take care of these dogs, our SPCA has chinchillas, they have a family of chinchillas, there's bunnies. Brad Crowell 6:31 There's like all the things. Lesley Logan 6:33 But you can't. If you can't, if you tell me, I can't have a pet, then guess what you get to be, a volunteer, where you go, and you can literally just sit with you can pick up a pet and just hold it. They have rooms where you can, just, like, play with these animals. And guess what? You can just do it on Fridays. You could do it on Tuesdays, like, you get all the pet love you need. And like, not.Brad Crowell 6:54 Unless he's been walking the dogs in the morning. Once a week, thrice a week, sometimes.Lesley Logan 6:58 I would love to go more, but to be honest, it is, I mean, I work from home, so it is never on the way to anything, but I it means the world to me. I'm gonna be honest, the money doesn't actually do anything. So we went local, and it's really fun to see how the money makes it go. That's how it works. Brad Crowell 8:54 Yeah, we're intentionally trying to find new cities along the way, so we'll be in like, places like Knoxville. We never been there before, so I'm excited. Brad Crowell 9:02 Anyway, we had a question this week, and anonymous is asking, I know that you do strength training, Pilates and sometimes yoga. I also do these three modalities, and I also run, but it becomes a lot. I'm trying to find the balance between all of those movement modalities throughout the week, I'm curious if you've got a schedule that works personally for you.Lesley Logan 9:23 So here's the actual schedule. So Sunday mornings, I weight train and do a little Pilates. Mondays, I do some personal Pilates in the morning, but we work out at night. We do weight train at night. Tuesdays, is Pilates, some yoga and some zone two, but they're all separate. I do morning Pilates and yoga, and then zone two in the afternoon. Wednesdays, it's just weight training at night. Thursdays is like Tuesdays, except for it's weight train instead of running. And Fridays is weight training and a little Pilates, like what my body still needs after a whole week. Saturday, I do nothing. I have a whole day of rest. I like Saturday. Sometimes I do a little most of the time, I do a little sauna blanket time. It sounds like a lot. I don't have children so.Brad Crowell 10:13 But effectively, you know, you're doing some intentional movement six days a week. Lesley Logan 10:17 But also, and you should. And the other thing is, is like the way I do Pilates and yoga is not these high intensity cortisol, chaotic things.Brad Crowell 10:26 You're not going to a hot yoga room and sweating yourself to death and all the things. Lesley Logan 10:30 No, sometimes my whoop band doesn't even think I did anything when it comes to yoga, unless I did some like handstand hiccups and my Pilates, it catches it, for sure. But like when I do Pilates Tuesdays and Thursdays, it's a full hour. The rest of the time when I do Pilates, I start with, I just tell myself 15 minutes, and if I have time to if I get more curiosity, I'll do 30. But it's rarely more than 30, so it's so I'm not doing like, three hours of workouts every day. We're talking between 90 minutes and two hours between all of the things I just said each day, and they're spaced out so that I can feel myself, so I can have some energy, so that I can sleep at night, because I'm 43 and sleep is hard for me. So all that, but it, I will also say another caveat to all this is, the only thing that I am creating for myself, workout wise, is the Pilates. Like, that's the only and I use an order because I'm a classical teacher, so like my mat and Reformer, they have an order. And then the rest of the stuff is like, oh, what does my body need? What connections do I need? I am not coming up with my weight training schedule. I am not coming up with my yoga thing. I I do invest in those things. I have a trainer who I can talk to and like, thank God for her, because there's days I don't want to do it, and because I paid for it, I go do it. So I will just say it is a lot. I don't think everyone should do what I do.Brad Crowell 11:45 Let's go back to the actual question. You know, have you found a schedule that works for you personally? Lesley Logan 11:50 Well, yeah, I just yeah, I have, but I was just saying, like, I, I think one of the things you have to do is, first of all, at least one or two cannot be designed by you, like somebody else with that expertise should be doing it. I also don't go to a yoga studio for my yoga. I don't go to a Pilates studio for my Pilates like that, I think also affects the ability for it to be easy. As an ADHD person like I have to drive there, park my car and go do it. Sometimes that's too much. So for me, I do have luxury of doing my yoga is in real time. It's just on Zoom. So I love that. I put I make sure it's in gallery view so I can see everyone. I feel like I'm part of the thing, but I don't have to go anywhere like between class. And my next thing is, I fold my mat up and I move on to the next thing. So I think what I would suggest for this person, anyone else, it's like, what are the things you could do, either at home or at your job. How can you make it so you're not losing time going to things all the time? That's where OPC really helps out. Like, maybe you go to a studio once a week for equipment, but you do mat two or three times at home. Like, how can you make it so or you are at the gym doing your weight training, then you do your mat at the end, right? Because that's a 30-minute or less workout. It's really great. At the end, after weight training, it will, like, open everything up. And if you hate just laying there stretching, it's not that Pilates is stretching, but you get what I mean, like, it's a really good counter balance to it. So my suggestion to you is, like, one, it doesn't have the all or nothing. Two, get experts to design things for you that you're not an expert in. And then three, how can you shave the travel time off on some of these things? Because I don't think that everything has to be an hour all the time, but that's how businesses pay people, and they pay them by the hour. So that's why your sessions are 50 minutes. And that doesn't mean it's necessarily but you need all of those minutes.Brad Crowell 13:37 That's true. Great, great question. Thanks. In addition to her clinical and nonprofit roles, she runs a women's coaching and consulting practice supporting women as they build their businesses and creating lasting legacies as entrepreneurs, her coaching focuses on helping high achieving women move beyond questioning their value, so they can stop settling for less than what they actually want.Lesley Logan 14:36 So I mean, Corey is a great listen, you guys, because she she's had non-linear like job changes that have put her where she is right now. And I think what we all need to hear is that that's kind of how life goes. We were talking about her like switching from the this full time job that she went to school for for so long and spent so much money to switching to health coaching, which is that led her into actually the coaching that she does today. And she was talking about how, like, if the clients did not feel worthy of taking care of themselves, it didn't matter what plan she gave them, like it did. Like these are already highest achieving, amazing women who know how to do follow a plan, they know how to check boxes, they know how to do, to follow directions, and they couldn't because they just didn't feel worthy of it. And I think that's really eye-opening thing for us to think about, because if you do have like the trainers, or you do have the coaches, or you have invested in the in the guides, but you're not doing the thing it, it may be worth just reviewing. If you feel like you're worthy of the thing that comes from that, you might not be feeling that way yet. So I thought that was really cool what we talked about, because we, I do think a lot of high-achieving women often wonder, like she said, who am I to do that? And it stops their progress. And so we, true success and whatever you want to do requires a mindset shift, where women embody the thoughts and desires and beliefs of who you want to become, right? Like I thought that was a really powerful thing to think about.Brad Crowell 16:02 Yeah. Well, you were also talking about, how did she effectively leave her job right, and then, like, being a doctor and being focused on, like, her specialty, with working with people in wheelchairs, how does she then coach people right? And that's where she was talking about this, you know, mindset, the the second guessing yourself. Right? So she, she was talking about that worthiness, and how do you know? How do you know that you're like, how do we get to the point where we feel worthy? Well, I'm asking you, How do we get to the point where we feel worthy? Lesley Logan 16:38 To be honest, if you're waiting for someone else to say you're worthy. That's the problem. Like, I think everybody's waiting for outside indicators that they are worthy. You actually are born worthy. The fact that you're here is why you're worthy. Like every single person on this planet was born to make an impact on this planet, so you're already worthy. In fact, the problem is a bunch of fucking assholes out in the world who have shown through example that they are unworthy are the ones going out there with so much confidence in a mic that we go, go, oh my god, well, I'm not them, so I'm, no, you're born worthy.Brad Crowell 17:11 You're or they're judging from the sidelines and making people feel not worthy. You know, I think you're right, and also, too, it's funny because you two are mentioning it, you know, the more we're in the room, like coaching with other people and seeing, you know, big businesses, and realizing, oh, they're struggling with similar things that we're struggling with, just on a different scale, or maybe they're in a different point in the journey. But like, we might have this presentation that we have it all together, but we're all still figuring shit out, too, you know.Lesley Logan 17:40 I'll be honest. The who am I to do that is definitely something I resonate with. And then the few times, this many times we've been in rooms with other businesses who, like, flaunt these amazing numbers. Like, oh, our own launch was this many figures. And then you start to realize that the profit after what they spent to get that money is, like, so ridiculous. You're like, so you're making.Lesley Logan 18:01 They spend $1,000 on ads.Lesley Logan 18:02 So, like, I spent only 500 and I, like, made 30, and I'm but you're like, I made six 100,000 but you spent 90, like, I made more money than you. Why am so I remember always thinking, like, having imposters in those rooms. And then after a few of those times here, and I was like, I fucking a better business person than these people. These people just throw money at problems to feel like, to be able to have numbers, they can say at the end to say that they're worthy. But I'm worthy because I'm actually making the impact on a very small budget. And so I think it but that came from me. I had to observe and then like, integrate and like, and almost get a little angry and do that. I think that too many people are waiting for someone to come and deem them ready to be successful, and now you've you've now made it. You've been knighted worthy. No, I think if more, especially women who listen this podcast and the few good men, if more people actually thought they were worthy, we would not be in the muck we are in because too many people who are not worthy are just walking around with confidence.Brad Crowell 18:49 Well, I really loved when she was talking about time being an excuse. And this is this was tough. This one hit home for me, because we have this intention that we like to, you know, that we are going to do something, and then we don't make time for it. And the two of you were talking about the if you want a shopping spree to your favorite store, you would make time for it. You would totally figure it out and make time for it. So when we put it in that kind of context, do we, are we actually making time for the things that we say that we want, or are we making time for the things that we want? Right? So like there's and there's two different things there.Lesley Logan 19:40 Yeah. Well, here's the thing. I'll just give an example, and I, I've been struggling with way to post this on Instagram because I don't want it to come off arrogant. But you guys know me well, so we're gonna talk about it. So in the last two weeks of recording this podcast, so not now. Everything is fine today, but in the last two weeks, we found out multiple different people were using my image and the team had to do extra work to deal with that. Then we had our websites down for five days. All of them, I had to watch 48 20-minute videos and write notes, and then have 26 20-minute calls, it all took 30, on top of all the work I do, the YouTube videos, all the things, you guys, I missed zero workouts, not one, zero. So that's not a flex. It's because those things, the Pilates session, specifically, those those movement practices, they are the reason I can do all this stuff. And so I will, I will never say, oh, I don't have time to go work out. I don't have time for that? No, the other stuff is what I will have to fit in and find time, or find ways to delegate, or figure out if that's a problem I have to deal with right now. But like, I'm not if I were to go, oh, this is a shitty week. The websites are offline. I can't work out because I got to do this. That is terrible, like that, that's too easy. So I do think that if you keep saying I don't have time, enough time, I would definitely look at your schedule, because you're, you're using your time is being spent on something you don't, that doesn't you don't want it to matter so much. Brad Crowell 21:10 Yeah, yeah, or, you know, I think, I think, though, you know, it's tough if you have a family, or like, kids or responsibilities in that way. I understand, I understand that. But there's also, you know, when it comes to that it's important that they understand how you value your time, too, and you you know that is something that can be a learning opportunity for them. Lesley Logan 21:33 Exactly. Amy Ledin, either episode three, no, she was episode five, episode five, and then we've had her on again, I think at least twice. So here's the deal. Actually said actions are caught, not taught. She said it multiple times. She really believes it.Brad Crowell 21:46 Five and 610. Lesley Logan 21:47 If you want your kids off their screens, they can do Pilates with you. If you can go on a family walk, you can't like if they see you practicing prioritization of the things you say matter, that means a lot to them. And I really do think that there is, I mean, obviously infants are a different story, but there and there is things you can do. There's also hopefully, of a partner, we can say, hey, it would mean a lot to me if I could get 20 minutes. You don't need a full hour, 20 minutes to do this thing that I said I wanted to do. These are the things that are really important to me. I need to find, can we sit down with the family calendar and find these times? Like, how can you get the family involved? I really want to write a book, right? So that's not me, but say maybe that's you. Maybe you want to write a book. Maybe you want to work on a thing. Hey guys, it would mean a lot. We had Stephanie at the Mullet Tour. She's like, I'm so jealous of your morning walks. I want to go on a morning walk. I found how old her kids were, and I said, So can't, are they incapable of making their own lunches? Like, yeah, it's a lot. I'm like, why don't you ask them, hey guys, it would mean a lot to me if before lot to me if, before I take you to school, I get to do a morning walk. Next day, next day. She texted me, I'm on my morning walk. They handled it. So I just think that sometimes we, yes, time with when you have kids and other and also, like some women have aging parents that they're also taking care of, time, there's always an excuse for not having time, but sometimes we're we also we get into a habit of not having time, and so we can't get out of that habit of not having time. And maybe you're in a season where you actually could make time for something important to you.Brad Crowell 23:15 Yeah, she, you know she's talking about when we use the excuse that we're blaming a lack of time. We're actually hiding the true obstacle. Now she are just to get underneath the excuse and ask, what? What is the real issue here? Is it fear, right? Is it like, how can we take radical responsibility for our time? How can we, how can we actually like, because otherwise we are being disingenuous with ourselves. We're lying to ourselves effectively, right? Like I am. I'm gonna do this thing and then we don't do this thing. And she said it might involve burning your calendar down and starting over. So she pointed out that people, they use seemingly positive or productive tasks as excuses. Oh my gosh. I just had so much work to do. You know? I didn't get a chance to go to do the thing, whatever the thing is, right? Or I'm planning to plan, or she, she said that maybe you're planning to plan, you know, like, you know, ultimately, but ultimately, making time for what actually matters requires that you take responsibility and stop stalling. You know, do I want to waffle in this, or do I want to move forward?Lesley Logan 24:19 Yeah, yeah. I think I also, I think getting on it all this is also just like saying, like, getting honest with yourself, if you honestly don't have time because you have young kids, you're taking care of, you are a single parent, you're also have an agent. Like, then we have to ask, okay, how do we get the community support? Because that's too much for any person. That's so much, and I'm not saying you have to find five hours, but like, let's how we get some little snacks to fill your cup so you feel worthy, you know, but I think I love burning down a calendar. I love starting over.Lesley Logan 24:49 Well, stick around. We might talk a little bit more about burning down calendars when we get back. Brad Crowell 24:49 All right, finally, let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Dr Corey Wynn? She said, invest in yourself. Invest in a community of other women who are going places that you are also going, and it's important to to make that investment with people who will hold space for your dreams. You know, you were talking about, how do we how do we push pause on family or friends who aren't supportive and, you know, can't get rid of them, but, like, don't really want to get rid of them, but like, definitely they're clearly not the support system. That's where we came in this investing with ourselves. She said, inevitably, you become the reflection of the five people you spend the most time with.Lesley Logan 25:39 That that, I know we all hear that cliche. It's so fucking true. It is the most true thing. Because if you are around people who are wanting to learn and wanting to grow and wanting to think they're even if you don't, aren't contributing to that conversation you are hearing about the things they're doing, it's very inspirational. You can feel your vibes change when you hang out with different people, like I don't even hang out with like, eyores anymore, because, like, I don't even have an eyore in my life. Because, like, you know, so, yeah. Brad Crowell 26:07 Yeah. She said, you must actively and carefully curate your inner circle, you know, surround yourself with people who fill the roles of cheerleader, bruiser, a mentor, a coach, right? And also a mentee. I'm not opposed to a mentee, someone that you can you know, support.Lesley Logan 26:24 Well, that's a plus minus equals that I talk about all the time, and I attribute to someone who we can't figure out when he said it, but. Brad Crowell 26:26 And it doesn't necessarily have to be in person, you know, like virtual communities are something you can be a part of. It isn't, doesn't go into detail, but it's, it's a part of her journey. And I do think it is worthy to hear the whole journey of how she got to where she is, how she becomes the inner glow coach that she is, and also like how you can have inner glow in your life, and how that changes things. And she's just so authentic and so cool. And I'm really jazzed for you to hear this. So here's Angie Hawkins. Lesley Logan 1:57 Hey, Be It babe. I'm really excited and ready for this conversation. Our guest today is Angie Hawkins, and I think you're gonna hear a lot of similarities in her story and her journey and what she's working on. If you have ever felt like you've done all the things and it's still not working, today's episode is for you. So Angie Hawkins, can you tell everyone who you are and what you rock at?Angie Hawkins 2:19 Yes. Hi everyone. Thank you for having me, Lesley. I am an inner glow coach, and what that means is I help high achieving women stop chasing love and approval and everything outside of themselves, and actually radiate it from within, so they can finally feel happy, free and loved for who they are. And I am also the author of Running in Slippers, which is a raw and vulnerable memoir, that the whole point of the book, because it's very vulnerable, is to encourage connection through vulnerability, because that's how we truly connect as human beings. Well, okay, so Running in Slippers, like, most like, I feel like there's a book like, Running in Heels, which already sounds terrible, Running in Slippers isn't easy to do either. Can we go into like, can we get vulnerable a little bit and talk about, like, how did that title come about? Like, what? What is the journey that you had to go on? Because I do think, by the way, if you're listening, we all get to go on a journey like that is the beautiful thing about this life. And sometimes I think we feel like, why is this happening to me? But there's something we get to learn from that. So can you, can we hear yours?Angie Hawkins 3:36 Yes, I love that. And first of all, I before I get into my whole story, which, honestly, the book Running in Slippers gets into all the details, because what I'm going to give you is just the high level cliff notes version. But I live in Hawaii, and we call flip flops, slippers, so it really means running in flip flops.Lesley Logan 3:52 Even harder, even more dangerous.Angie Hawkins 3:55 So, but the reason I titled the book that way is because it's a metaphor for life, because life, it can be fun, playful and adventurous, but it can also be difficult, painful and scary, just like running in flip flops. Lesley Logan 4:07 Yeah, oh, that's so funny. Can you tell I'm totally not an island girl and I do call them slippers. And they can be, like, very childlike, like, you're running on the beach, like, it's really cool, and then you all of a sudden are running on a slippery sidewalk. And, yeah. Angie Hawkins 4:21 Exactly. So, yeah. I think once people understand what it means, it's relatable. And if you do read the book, or anyone listening, if you do read the book, I explained that immediately in the introduction, so that people don't think I'm actually running in house slippers or like that just ruins the whole meeting. I think.Lesley Logan 4:39 I mean, well, you know what? Actually like I was picturing, like you going through something, just like being a girl in her house shoes like running, chasing a dream down.Angie Hawkins 4:48 I think there's so many metaphors, yeah.Lesley Logan 4:51 Awesome. Well, let's get into the Cliff Notes. I love it. Angie Hawkins 4:55 Yes. So basically, like most people, my origin story starts in childhood. And I was raised in a household where the most succinct way to say it is that my both of my parents were extremely emotionally unavailable. And as an adult, I understand what that means, and I have the tools to process that and understand it. But as a little girl, I didn't have those tools, and the way I interpreted the situation is that I thought that I didn't deserve to be loved. So very early, early on in life, I developed this belief. And as most of us are aware, your beliefs dictate your behaviors, and then that dictates what you attract into your life. So needless to say I struggled for many years because I was a people pleaser. I was the one who was chasing love and approval outside of myself. I was the overachiever, because I thought to earn the love and respect and approval, I had to have a high position at work, or I ran marathons for a while, and that became my identity, like I had to get a good time. I was reaching for everything outside of myself, yet I still felt extremely unhappy and unfulfilled, and I was at a point in life where I honestly didn't even think that was available to me. I thought this is just how life was. I didn't think I was worthy of it. I thought it was just something that other people had. So if I was viewing someone else who was happy and fulfilled in their life, it just didn't even seem attainable for me. So even though I was very unhappy, I just kind of went along life, not really knowing what to do about it, like I would read self help books or, you know, do something like go to yoga, or have, like a spiritual practice or something, and that would provide short term a short term fix, but I didn't really have anything implemented for a long term change. And the first real turning point came in 2017, my boyfriend broke up with me, and then my dad passed away, and I was 37 years old, and I had spent 37 years avoiding my feelings, doing everything I could not to feel them, but I was in such profound grief that it was impossible not to feel my feelings, yet I didn't have the tools for emotional regulation. So the best way to say it was I felt like shit for most of that year because I was just sitting in these feelings that I didn't know what to do with. And 2018 came around, and I was probably like, in this New Year's resolution energy, and I decided that I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. And I decided, like, I wanted to make some changes, and I wanted to be happy. I was living in Chicago at the time, and that's when I decided I wanted to move from Chicago to Hawaii.Lesley Logan 7:49 Major differences. Huge differences. Angie Hawkins 7:52 Yes and I will say it was well intentioned, because I was actually taking agency over my life. I was doing something to make a change and be happier. It was not well intentioned, and that I was still reaching for something outside of myself to be the thing that made me feel better, because I wanted the change in location to be the thing that made me happy. And this will probably not come as a surprise, you cannot move away from your problems, so I moved 4000 miles away, and I still had the exact same issues. Not only that, I developed a whole new roster of problems. So, for example, in 2018 remote work was not the trendy thing to do, but I was very fortunate, because my job allowed me to move and keep my job. But at the exact same time that I moved there was this huge management shake up at work that threatened my role, and because I was in this victim mentality of like this is all that's available to me and like this happening to me. I for the first year that I lived here, I lived in constant fear of losing my job. I had a really hard time making friends when I first moved here, which was something I had never dealt with before. So struggling with making friends, being thousands of miles away from anyone I knew, felt extremely isolating. Lesley Logan 9:10 Yeah, and you're in an island, so it's already isolated.Angie Hawkins 9:13 Exactly, exactly. So it's like I didn't have, you know, I just felt really lonely, basically. And the last major thing that happened when I moved here is like to prove how all in and committed I was to my decision. I bought a condo, but then a month after my condo closed, a shared pipe backflowed into my bathroom and I wasn't home, so my entire condo flooded. Yes. So this is all this is all right off the bat. So again, I'm expecting the change to be the thing that makes me feel better, and everything was falling apart. Lesley Logan 9:46 And you're literally doing everything it says I got to go all in, got to burn the boat. You got to buy that condo without the pike being checked. Oh my god, and you haven't even hit Covid yet, shit. Angie Hawkins 9:58 Well, that brings me to Covid because, so that was 2018 right? So, and I'm trying to be like I was totally emotionally bypassing my feelings. I'm like, It's fine, I got this, but I'm not even exaggerating when I say the next two years it was like thing after thing, like my grandma died, like there was always something, and because I didn't have that emotional foundation within myself, because everything outside of me was unraveling. I was unraveling, and then Covid happened. So I don't even have to explain how that exacerbated the situation, just, but the straw, the straw that broke the camel's back was the end of a relationship during Covid. And I just had this moment where, and I think we all have this. I still have these moments where it's like I can't take this anymore, but unfortunately, layered on top of that feeling was the sheer feeling of hopelessness, because nothing had been going well, and I truly could not see any hope for the future, and that is such a dangerous place to be, so I intentionally overdosed on my anxiety medication, and I spent a day and a half unconscious in my bathroom. I spent another day and a half in the hospital.Lesley Logan 11:09 Wait, no one knew you were in your bathroom?Angie Hawkins 11:12 No, I miraculously, I was blacked out. I miraculously texted a friend and she took me to the hospital. That's the only way I was transported. Lesley Logan 11:22 Oh my god. What a story. Oh my god. Oh my god. You're like, this is crazy.Angie Hawkins 11:28 And then where I'll end is I was released from the hospital, and I called a friend, I told her everything that happened, and I ended with, I can't believe I didn't die. And her response was, it's not your time. And it was so profound that it sent a cold chill through my body. Lesley Logan 11:48 I have chills right in this moment. Angie Hawkins 11:49 Yeah and I in that moment, I was like, okay, I think I have a purpose. And I was determined to figure out what it was.Lesley Logan 12:00 Oh my gosh. I just want to say thank you for sharing your story. I'm so glad there was something in you that texted a friend, and I'm also glad that that friend wasn't on, like, Do Not Disturb like, I oh my god. But like, I It's so clear, not only is it not your time, but there was a part of you that was always trying to figure this out. I think in hearing your story like, there was this part of you that's like, I am, there is more for me out there, but like you so there's and I think we all have this. I think so many of my listeners who are here like they know there is more, and yet, when they try to do the more something happens. There's always a thing that happens, like, they make more money, and then a huge bill happens. They break up with the toxic relationship, and then this thing happens, and now they're alone. Like, I you know, there's a whole thing. It's like everything is in balance. Like, you get a good thing and you need a bad thing. But like, also sometimes we're just not ready. If you don't have the muscle for that, then it just feels like you're getting beat while you're down. Angie Hawkins 13:07 Exactly. And I think we're saying the same thing, but I look at it as, for example, in my situation, my brain and my heart felt like they didn't want to be here, but my soul, or higher self, or whatever you want to call it, really did. So I think there's always this part of us, and we're all connected to our intuition or higher self, whether we're like, in tune to it or not, but there's always that part of us that's calling us to this higher purpose or something else, but then we have to deal with the realities of the real world. Lesley Logan 13:38 Yeah. So you wake up in this hospital and you now, like, it's not your time, but like, you have to then get out of the hospital and and figure so how do you, how do you do that? Like, where do you start? Because, like, there's a million books, there's a million courses, there's 17 million charlatans, you could end up in a cult real easily, you know. So how did you, how did you figure it out?Angie Hawkins 14:01 Well, I don't know if this is lucky or unlucky, but because at the time this happened, I was 40 years old, and I had spent out of my 30s reading all the books, doing all the workshops, doing all of that stuff. But again, it had only provided like something short term. It really didn't give any meaningful long term change in my life. So fast forward to when, you know, my friend told me that, and I decided, like, okay, I need to get help, and I need to get help the right way. I decided to invest in myself and actually hire a coach, because it had been something I was thinking about. But when you're not fully committed to a decision, you're just kind of in this wishy-washy energy. And in addition to that, again, I was in the state of not really feeling worthy of investing in myself or putting in the time, energy or money. But when you're desperate like I was, because keep in mind, I felt worse than I did before I took the pills and yeah like, I can't explain what almost dying does to you, but there were several weeks where I had one foot on the other side of the veil, which was kind of a scary experience in its own so for several weeks, my only goal was to make it through the day. So I was so desperate for help, and I knew I had to get help the right way that like, the first thing I did was reach out to a coach. And again, this just happened to be luck, because in my I call it like from the time I got out of the hospital out I call that my healing in earnest journey, but my healing not in earnest. I had gone to this healing intensive, and I had met this coach, and he was actually a men's dating coach, but he doesn't teach, like pick up artists type stuff. He teaches men how to be the best versions of themselves so that they can attract the right partner. So we followed each other on Instagram. So all of his messaging, even though it was, like, geared toward men, it was about being the best version of yourself. So I had thought about reaching out to him before, but now that I was desperate, I'm like, I don't care if he's a men's dating coach, I'm reaching out to him. So I reached out to him. Lesley Logan 16:17 You had trust in him, yeah. Angie Hawkins 16:17 We talked, yeah, yeah. So I was very lucky that I had already made that connection with someone I trusted. Otherwise I would have been searching.Lesley Logan 16:25 Yeah, and like, at a time that, like, I again, there's, there was a party that was already seeking these things out, just those other, the other part of you that was like, like you said, not feeling worthy. And I, I hear this, you know, I just came back from an amazing retreat. And one of the women who came on it, she's like, yeah, I'm one of those people who kept going, oh, I'll do it next time, oh, you know when I have this, then I then I can sign up for it, or when I've done this, then I can sign up for it. And then she's like, fuck it. I'm, I'm worthy to go right now. I'm like, that. Angie Hawkins 16:54 I love that. Lesley Logan 16:55 That right there that makes me so happy. And also, you know, so many people, smart women, listening to this show right now will do that, that little negotiation, oh, when I do this, then I'll be and it's like, you're fucking worthy already. And this is no offense to the parents who are listening. Everyone is doing the best they can, but most of us, somewhere in life along the way, feel like we have to earn the worthiness that we were already born with. Yeah, yeah.Angie Hawkins 17:21 Yes, yeah. And that's where, like, the chasing something outside of yourself come from. Lesley Logan 17:24 Yeah and then that's why you only get those quick little fixes, but it doesn't last. So you found this guy and he helped you, and then what, like, was it like, well, I've made it.Angie Hawkins 17:36 No, it was absolutely a process. I won't sugarcoat that part, because any lasting change is a process, right? But the value and the work that I did with him was, you know, I still have these limiting beliefs, like I'm not worthy, I don't deserve to be loved, blah, blah, blah, but he helped me change my behaviors so that eventually, because if when I started setting healthy boundaries, when I started trusting myself, when I started implementing all the things that we talked about, like over time, that actually changed my beliefs. And so now I do believe I deserve to be loved. I do respect myself, I do trust myself, but that all came like through this process of working with a coach, and that's what ultimately led me, because I was in corporate America for over 20 years, but in stepping into my authentic self and realizing what I want in life, what makes me happy and fulfilled, I realized corporate America was not it, and I also realized that there are so many other women who are now struggling in the same way that I used to struggle. So I was like, I want to help them. So I quit corporate America and became an inner glow coach.Lesley Logan 18:44 I love this. I also love that it's inner glow, like, it's just like, because it's, you know, we we are, most of us are seeking outside of ourselves to change the inside of ourselves. And you just said something about, like, your limiting beliefs, and once you change your beliefs, it's true. Like, we think, okay, well, first of all, this environment, it's not clean. So because this room isn't clean, I can't do the things that I said I was going to do. And then when you don't do the things you said you're gonna do, you don't have confidence. Because that's just, by the way, how confidence works, right? Like, confidence works by doing the thing you said you're gonna do. And so, but then we're like, but we think it's this outside stuff, oh, I gotta make sure that, like, this is just right, or that's just the lighting is just right, but really it's the belief system that we have that affects everything. So can we, do you mind if we go there? Like, can we talk about that? Because, like, if you're someone who typically, you see a people pleaser, and who you know was also, as you mentioned, like, nervous, like, nervous about, like, losing your job. Like, I imagine that the belief systems you had were then causing you to, like, run around and be everything to everybody, and then you have to change the belief systems to be like, nope, not doing that. Like, what's the process? How do you do that?Angie Hawkins 19:52 I mean, it's a whole process, but the whole, and this is what my coaching program is based on, but the overall concept is, we're all born with this light inside of us, but then as we go about life, there's family systems, there's society systems, there's corporate America systems, there's all these systems that if you really think about it, they're just arbitrary rules that someone made up along the way, and we're just blindly following them so we become disconnected from ourselves, and it dims our light. And for example, because I used to be a people pleaser, I would not even question, like, if someone invited me to do something or asked me to do something, I wouldn't even question, like, what do I want to do? What makes me happy and fulfilled? So it's not about and I and this is why I think I struggled with self help when I was healing in my 30s and reaching for things outside of myself, because a lot of it is geared toward fixing yourself or changing something about yourself, but really it's about coming back home to who you are and basing your life off of that. Because when you stop giving your power away to all these external things, you've really stopped caring. Because when you're concerned about, am I living in integrity? Am I happy with who I am as a person? Am I happy with my decisions? You stop caring about what other people think about it.Lesley Logan 21:13 That is so true. That is so true, and so many I was just doing a call with some of the people that I, that I teach today, and, you know, I could tell the question was a very valid question, but I was like, so people, some people like you, if you do it the authentic, the way that's authentic to you, that's also okay, like, they're allowed to go, I don't like that. And it doesn't mean that you're not a great person, you're not a great teacher, but we are so conditioned to be liked, if you're liked, then you did something right?Angie Hawkins 21:45 Yes. And I actually have the opposite viewpoint now, because I totally used to be like that. I wanted everyone to like me, and if someone didn't, then I would like chase after their approval. But now, now I really don't care. And that doesn't mean I don't care about the other person. It's just, it just means that I respect their free will, like, I'm not for everybody, and that's okay, like they have other people that they choose to surround themselves with, and that's okay. I respect who they are as a person, but you have to be like, so grounded in who you are as a person to even get to that point. Lesley Logan 22:17 Yeah, and that's the hard part, because also, if you're so used to trying to anchor in the outside world of who you are, then coming home to yourself, it's gonna feel unfamiliar. And people don't like change, right, like. Angie Hawkins 22:34 Yeah and I think that's why a lot of people resist change, because a huge part in my healing and earnest journey was finding who I was, which was a huge identity shift, because I didn't even know who I was, because I had spent most of my life conforming to all these things outside of myself, and it is very scary. So I was able to see why I had resisted it for so long.Lesley Logan 22:57 Yeah. I mean, it makes me think of like that Runaway Bride, where she like, doesn't, she takes her eggs, you know, and then at the end, she just, you're like, ordering eggs all the different ways so she can figure it out. Because it's like, it is kind of like, well, how do you know you're home? Like, how do you know that you're not, like, conforming again, just another way, you know, that's, can you see, like, where my anxiety will go?Angie Hawkins 23:18 Well, no. Like, one of the first things that my coach worked with me on, and this is one of the first things I work with my clients on, is creating your own rules for life. So you create these value statements, and it's like any decision you make, you just kind of go down the list. Am I doing this? This, this? Then, yep, then I'm good to go. So once you have your own rules for life, it doesn't matter. I mean, as long as you're not breaking the law or anything, which. Lesley Logan 23:43 Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, like, and that's true, like, you're not hurting people, there are rules for your life that affect only you. And I actually love this because, you know, people like, we coach Pilates instructors on their business. And someone's like, why should I do this? And I'm like, what are your values for your business? Does it go through those? And so it makes sense to have rules for life that's just very much a value system of how you want and it's like, does this, you know, does this? Like, I will do things that light me up. I will do things after 9am because I no longer get up early for people like, oh, this person wants to meet at 9am well, then that is a no, yeah.Angie Hawkins 24:20 Well, it's hard to do, but once you have that system in place, life is so much easier, because that's another thing. I used to feel like life was such a struggle, but it was because I was making that way for myself.Lesley Logan 24:32 Yeah, yeah. I think we all, I think a lot of us are doing that. So I guess like, so since you were, can we go back to it like, when you're a people pleaser like that look like, just like being a yes person for whatever people are saying. How do you now respond to people asking things of you, or the like, if you know what I mean, like, what is some what is a way that you're now responding in life to not being a people pleaser and owning things for yourself and owning like the way you want to live?Angie Hawkins 24:58 Yeah? Yeah, I guess it's different for different situations, but because I think I swayed too far, because I first started implementing boundaries when I worked in corporate America, and at first I would just be like, nope, not doing that, nope, but which no it well.Lesley Logan 25:16 Angie used to do everything, now she does nothing.Angie Hawkins 25:19 And no, is a complete sentence, but you do have to take into consideration the circumstance, especially if it's like work for family and friends. But usually I'll just simply explain, like, for example, something that comes up frequently is that people will ask me to have a call on the weekend, and that's just the boundary that I have. I don't do calls on the weekends. I will rearrange any time during my week, like, to some extent, but I just like, that's my personal time where I recharge is the weekend. So if someone is like, I just had someone this week, well, can you do a call on a Saturday? And I was like, no, I'm sorry I don't do calls on the weekends. It was no problem. She's like, oh, sure. I'll find another time during the week. So it's, it seems scary to do, but in most cases, it's not a problem. Now, if she would have said, like, there's absolutely no other time during the week for the foreseeable future, I might have considered it. So it's still not a strict no, but I do protect my energy as much as possible.Lesley Logan 26:18 Yeah, well, and I, but I love the way you phrased it, because you're also educating the person that it's like, instead of saying, like, some people would go, like, like, you do it this one Saturday, but like, that isn't setting a boundary. It's actually like letting them think that that's a thing. And instead, you're like, oh, I don't do calls on the weekends. That is actually like letting people, letting the person know, like, it's not a, no, I don't like you. It's just a you're asking for a time that's not available and isn't available. You know? So, and I think that you know a lot of people who struggle with being liked, feeling worthy, the people pleasing there's, it's, it's such a simple sentence, once you are have arrived, and like knowing that you're worthy, and it's so difficult, because it's like, you just say that. You just say no, I don't do calls on the weekends. It's like, give it a try, you know. But it's hard. It's hard for people. Angie Hawkins 27:06 It is hard. But the funny thing is, it really is that easy, because, like, the first few times I had to say no, because I used to be I used to have zero boundaries, like I couldn't even if someone invited me to do something. I couldn't even say no to that. But when I first started using the word no, like, no, I'm sorry, I need to rest this weekend or whatever, and then they were like, okay, that's fine, because it's very rare that you have people push back. And honestly, the people that do push back on your boundaries are the kind of people you don't want in your life anyway. Lesley Logan 27:36 Yeah, so that becomes a (inaudible) sign.Angie Hawkins 27:39 And it becomes very apparent, very fast, and that's actually helpful information for you. So boundaries are so powerful in so many ways.Lesley Logan 27:48 I do it's really interesting, because some people are like, oh, you're so rigid. I'm like, I'm I'm not rigid. Actually, I just don't, just don't do things on your timeline. I do things on my timeline, and that's okay, because I also don't have expectations that you do things on my timeline, you know, like, but there is a Venn diagram where our timelines will align if it's meant to be together, you know.Angie Hawkins 28:11 But you probably also have a lot of people who respect how self-respecting you are of yourself, because I got to the point where this happened a lot at work, people would compliment me on my boundaries. And I was like, me, like someone who used to not have boundaries? So a lot of people will actually respect you for having boundaries.Lesley Logan 28:29 They totally do, and also like and if they don't, or they're upset about like, I'm like, oh, why is this person getting so upset about the fact that I just I cannot do a call before 9am because you want to know what I'm going to forget it's there, because I don't have to work before 9am so if on a day I have to work before 9am there are three people reminding me that I've got a call at eight because I'll just go, yeah, yeah, you told me. You told me, and it's like good to do. So, like, it's more out of like, my habit is I don't so then I don't have to remember anything extra. But I do, I do, I do think that these things reveal things about people. And it reveals, like, are we gonna work together? Well, you know, like, and I, I do. I do hope people respect my respect that I have so much, such good, grounded boundaries and and also, like, it's because I used to, like you, always have none. And I used to chase, like, if anyone would invite me, I would just go, okay, I'm coming over. Yeah, I'm spending the night. How many nights I'll stay? I'll stay all the nights you want. Like, I wouldn't go home for like, a week. My parents were just like, okay, you know, because, like, I was having so much fun, but also, like, I wasn't actually doing anything for me. I was doing whatever we wanted to do it there, you know. So I all the way until when I got a job. Oh my gosh, Angie, I would get every job I had that was not for myself, I would just keep getting promoted, and I would just say, yes, that's like, the lack of boundaries. Like, okay, yeah, I'll take on that job that I have no idea how to do. No problem. I got it. I'll do it. And like, and you had to quit my job so they wouldn't promote me again, because I couldn't trust myself to turn it down because I needed the money. So it was like, I needed the money. The promotion came with a raise. And also, also, they're like, well, Lesley will always do 150% so she'll just do more than this is being paid for anyways, and, like, so I just, it took me a lot. It took me, like, literally having to quit my job. So I wouldn't say that.Angie Hawkins 30:16 Yeah, and that's why I got really disgruntled with corporate America, because it's, it's like a dysfunctional family, like they will promote the people who have zero boundaries, because they can take advantage of them, amongst other things. Lesley Logan 30:29 Yes, and I also don't even think it's a conscious decision. They're just like, oh, this person does so much. Why wouldn't we want them to do more? So okay, but we do have a lot of people who don't get to quit their job and become an inner glow coach. So like, if, if people want to work on their inner glow, but then have to, like, work within corporate America. Like, is there hope for them? Can they do it?Angie Hawkins 30:50 I think it depends on the situation. Like, I wish I could say that I just, like, had so much courage and just, you know, wildly, went out on my own. But even after I had the idea that I wanted to quit and start my own business, I still had to have the universe kick me in the butt, because I was transferred to this team, and I basically had a bully as a manager, and it got so bad that I couldn't stand it. And I was like, okay, this is my sign to leave. I think if something is that toxic, your choices are limited, however, like I've been in other situations that were not that toxic, and I do think you can navigate them again, like by having strong boundaries is huge, but having a strong sense of yourself so that they're not taking advantage of you and walking all over you.Lesley Logan 31:37 Yeah, I think, like when you do have strong boundaries, you can recognize that in a company. So if you're like interviewing, you can start to recognize, like, the signs that their boundaries are, you know, that they're like, I had someone, I took a breath work course, and they said there are space makers and there are space takers, and nothing that neither is wrong. But can we all agree, space makers, that you can raise your hand first and space takers, if they ask more of you, it doesn't mean that they're assholes. You just have to say, no. Angie Hawkins 32:07 Yeah and because sometimes it is unintentional. Lesley Logan 32:10 Yeah, I do think so. I think they're just asking. Like, there are people who, like, are good questioners, like, I'm not that person, and they'll just ask. I'm like, oh my god, they just asked that person to write their bio, you know. But like, they're just asking, and, like, it requires other person to go, oh, I actually, I review bios, but I don't write them, you know. So, you know, like, yeah, we have to. I think where people struggle is that they they figure out their boundaries, and maybe you can help with this, they figure what their boundaries are, and then they have to reinforce them, because, unfortunately, there isn't like, like, a rules sheet when you enter this, like, when you enter a call with me, there's not like, here are all the rules I have, right? Like, the rules of engagement. That's not how life works. You're going to be out and about, you're going to run into people, you're gonna be at a grocery store, you're gonna be at a job interview. So, like, how do people like is, how did you navigate having to enforce your boundaries after you got, like, after the pendulum swung all the way and you're like, no, like, how did you like one in the middle to like, enforce boundaries without feeling like you're constantly enforcing your boundaries?Angie Hawkins 33:11 That's a really good question, because the hardest part of boundaries is not setting them, it's enforcing them, because there are people who will intentionally try to walk all over you and try to encroach your boundaries, but to your point earlier, people will unintentionally, like, you know, just try to inch up on them, and you have to be stern on enforcing them. And it could be, and again, it depends on the situation, but it could escalate to the point where it's like, I can no longer talk to you if you'll continue to disrespect my no, I mean that but with enforcing boundaries, not only do you have to state the consequence, you have to be willing to enforce the consequence if they do encroach your boundary again. So it can be difficult, and there have been people in my life that I've had to cut off communication with for that reason, but like in the long run, it makes my mental health so much better, because you don't have that person sucking up your energy anymore.Lesley Logan 34:14 Yeah, yeah, I agree. And also, thank God for technology, because it's so easy to block and bless you can block phone numbers, you can block emails. You can block socials. Like, you can also add them at the time, that's right. But like, you can protect your energy. Angie Hawkins 34:27 Yeah, that's true. Lesley Logan 34:28 I probably should ask you this earlier. But like, can we talk about what inner glow looks like? What it means, like, what is it like? You know, obviously, as we heard your journey, like, you know, obviously, pre the earnest time, maybe no inner glow, but like, what is, what does it mean when we have inner glow? Like, how do we know if we have it?Angie Hawkins 34:47 Well, so the reason I came up with the name Inner Glow is because when I truly started believing like that I loved myself, that I deserved to be loved, and I respected myself, and I believed that I deserve that from other people, it was truly a sensation of in my chest, like it felt like the sun was glowing, like it was like, maybe I can explain it as, like an energetic feeling from the inside out, yeah. But on top of that, I would have other people tell me, like, oh, you're glowing or some people would even just compliment my looks in that like, oh, you look so beautiful. Blah, blah, blah. But I think they were really talking about the reflection of my energy. So the inner glow is radiating in your own love and respect, so much that it's actually radiating to people outside of you. So not only do they see it, but they can be inspired by it, and it's this ripple effect, because I'm of the mindset that you're either contributing to the negative vibration of the universe, because there's plenty of that going on right now, or you're contributing to raising the vibration of the universe. So like this ripple effect even extends out to raising the vibration of the entire universe, because you're sending out, because there's so many things going on in this world right now that it's hard for us to impact on an individual level. But, even just sending that energy of love to certain areas of the world actually does make a difference.Lesley Logan 36:11 It really, you're, you're so I'm glad we're touching on this, because I think it is. It can even feel like, especially in the time that we're talking, it can feel like, well, what's the point? Like, everything is falling apart. So many people have less than me. I'm barely keeping alive. Most of my listeners at the time we're recording this guys, it's October 23rd 2025, and the you know if you're listening to the States, government shutdown. People are hearing that their health insurance can go up to 30,000 or 40,000 a year from nine and and like, you could be like, why should I have an inner glow? How do I even think about glowing when like, this is happening outside of my control, and people have less than and it's in you can almost feel like, what's the point? But you're, what you said it, the point is like the world needs more of us to raise the vibrations and affect, even if you affect the three people that are your neighbors and you show them so much love, it does. It does have a domino effect. It does have this like magnetism effect. I do believe that.Angie Hawkins 37:11 Yeah, and even if you don't think just being in your own positive light is changing the universe, you can actually just pick someone and send positive energy to that person. And trust me, it makes a difference in that person's life.Lesley Logan 37:26 It does. I love that, gosh, Angie, you're so cool. Like, what you're doing is so needed. And I think, like, especially because, you know, I've had, I've heard so many listeners going, I've done this, I've done this. I'm still stuck. I'm still struggling. And I, what I like, I'm gathering from this is like, it's all that outward stuff. It's not, it's not actually going to make the change. It has to be the inner glow. It has to be this inner vibration that you're changing. And that does take time, and it does take a lot of knowing of who you are. And that's a process.Angie Hawkins 38:01 yes, but it is 100% worth it, and I am proof of that. Okay, you have given us a lot already, but we do at the show like to have a little, not a too long didn't listen, but just like a little summary and like an actionable step we can take, because we are high performers who are listening to this podcast. So bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted steps people can take to be it till they see it, what do you have for us? Angie Hawkins 39:55 Number one is to decide, because any meaningful change. Your life comes from a decision, and the reason that is is because if you're not committed, you're going to be in the squishy, washy energy. And that's where you hear people say stuff like, well, I tried and it's not working, or I'm trying, and if you're not committed to something, you're going to quit the second it gets hard, but when you're committed to your decision, then the only choice is to stay on that path and figure out if something isn't working, and then you'll figure out what does. So I know it sounds simplistic, but when you make a decision to do something, you're committed and all in and that's when the real change happens. That's when lasting change happens. Number two is to take action. And I know you talk about this a lot, so I won't dwell on that. But number three, which is in conjunction with taking action, is about your nervous system, because a lot of people think that confidence and courage is about not being afraid, and taking action is about feeling the fear and doing it anyway. So before you take action, you need to prime your nervous system. So an easy way to do that is to just like, sit up straight, breathe. Some people do the Superman pose. What I do if I'm doing something in public, I call it the goddess walk, or the celebrity walk. I will walk into a place like I own it, even if I'm like, a nervous wreck and falling apart on the inside, but it's priming your nervous system to feel the fear and do it anyway, and just overall, your nervous system regulation. Because I used to be the kind of person I would let anxiety and fear just absolutely take over me, but now I have the tools to actually feel safe in my own body while I'm feeling those feelings and knowing that they're not going to consume me and overwhelm me so nervous system regulation and feeling safe in your own body while you're feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Lesley Logan 41:50 Oh my god, I'm obsessed. Okay, I have a fun story for you, and this will be a great way for people to have an example of that goddess walk. So in Cambodia, in our town, in our village, there's, there's a couple street lights now in the city, which is really annoying because I think it's causing more traffic. And people have now decided to have cars instead of motos. I don't know why you'd want to be in a car going 20 miles an hour when you could be in a moto going 25 but that's fine. At any rate, you just have to cross the street. Okay, so I don't know if you ever been to Southeast Asia, but you just have to cross the street. And these went. Lesley Logan 42:21 I have been to Indonesia. Lesley Logan 42:22 Correct. Okay, there, yes. So you have to cross the street and they and you can't, you cannot stop. If you stop, that's when you you fuck it all up, because now the bike was like expecting you to continue going, and they were gonna be right behind you, and now you stopped, and now they have to swerve, but then there's somebody behind so it becomes a domino effect. And when I first went to Cambodia, we were in Phnom Penh, and I saw this, she could have been seven years old, and she had a little kid who I don't know, barely walking in her hand. You guys, this was a five-lane wide on any American street, but probably, like 10-lane wide in Europe, because, like, you know how the streets are really wide in the States. Anyways, she put her hand up and just crossed the street with this little kid, and she just had her hand up, seven years old, and she just crossed. I saw the first time I was in Phnom Penh, I saw this, and I was like, look at that girl. Look at that confidence, right? But when we moved, it to Siem Reap, we do our time there. I channel that girl every time. So when I cross the street, I just throw my arms up and I just walk like it's my fucking street, and you can go around me. And so these women are like, okay, can we go, and I'm like, what we're gonna do is we're gonna open our arms and we're gonna walk and we're gonna own this place. Lesley Logan 1:48 So you guys, we saw the F1 movie, and mostly I went for the Brad Pitt part, but my friend said it was just on edge of her seat, and so I looked at my WHOOP and, like, heart rate monitor and you can see from the horror film preview to the end of the movie of the of the F1 you can actually see every time they had a race, because my heart would spike for every race, and I just like, can someone just tell me if he wins this race? So I can just enjoy the race, because I can't enjoy the race right now because I'm so stressed for him. So that's why I like to listen to these kinds of episodes, podcasts, and then I listen to the one.Brad Crowell 1:48 Yeah, yeah, okay.Lesley Logan 1:52 Today is October 2nd, 2025, in case you didin't know, it is the day before our 10th year wedding anniversary. Today, we celebrate the birthday of a man who helped bring forward the notion of non violence and the tremendous impact this form of social response has all over the world in the last century. On the International Day of Non-Violence created by the United Nations in 2007, we look back on the influence of an Indian activist born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, but known the world over as Mahatma Gandhi. The International Day of Non-Violence honors how Gandhi's work and legacy has impacted global non-violent protests. The UN has good reason to use Gandhi's birthday to celebrate International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi's commitment to India's independence and his methods have been the cornerstone of civil and human right initiatives all over the world. Put simply, Gandhi saw it as completely irrational to use violence to achieve peace. But rather just means.Brad Crowell 3:29 But rather, just means lead to just ends.Lesley Logan 3:32 Oh, but rather comma just means lead to just ends. Period. Got it, okay. This is a lesson we can all take to heart. I mean, I completely agree, you know.Brad Crowell 3:43 Yeah, it's, it's amazing that, especially in, you know, when he died in 1940s like late 40s, and his message spread all around the world, which is amazing, because, no, no computers, no email, no social media. Lesley Logan 4:01 Did you ever wonder? But do you wonder, like, would Mahatma Gandhi actually be famous today? Do you know what I mean? Because, like, some of the people we looked to were like, wow, like, would they actually keep the attention of the people who are like, hold on, let me see this kid, like, try lemon for the first time. Lesley Logan 4:20 Here's my, my faith in humanity's ability to, like, take, take seriously things that are serious is, like, dwindling every day. Lesley Logan 4:34 Yeah. I mean. Lesley Logan 4:35 We don't even know what's happened today when this comes out. I'm telling you, we're recording this in August, so, like, who knows what has happened to people's rights between August and August 2nd because it feels like every day they're trying to take someone's rights, or some city's rights away. We're talking about the U.S.Brad Crowell 4:50 Over the weekend, in the U.S., the federal government deployed troops to 17 cities, or something like that.Lesley Logan 4:57 I think they threatened 17. Brad Crowell 4:57 Or they, like, they we're gonna take, yeah. Lesley Logan 4:58 But by the time this has happened, maybe it's happened, but by the time we're recording this, no. So right now, they're in D.C. and they're threatening to go to Chicago and something else, but, like.Brad Crowell 5:08 They're in L.A. and D.C., yeah. Lesley Logan 5:10 And, you know, like, I just, I mean, it's all control, right? The more they have you scared, the more they have you changing your life, you know, then it's one day you wake up, it's too late, you can't even vote. So keep protesting. Go find a protest. There's a woman who's 104 I think she turned 104 two months ago. She protests every Thursday. Every Thursday. She is 104 she has very few days left on this planet, and she's like, I'm gonna spend one of every seven protesting for people's rights. We are not going to be here. Brad Crowell 5:44 She's not going to be here for them. Lesley Logan 5:45 She's not going to be here, right? Someday she will go. So I'm just saying, you, too.Brad Crowell 5:50 Yeah, but I think also, the thing, you know, like, we've been.Lesley Logan 5:54 By the way, we all boycott Target and look what happened. CEO is gone. So these things work.Brad Crowell 5:58 Well, the point of it is, is not necessarily the, the action of boycotting is important and and like, you know, making your voice heard. But I think that the key here is the non violent part, right? And I'll tell you, it's really challenging when you know the police are out in force or the military is out in force. It's very scary feeling to be in a crowd and, you know, see a clash, and you know that's, that is, we haven't been around like extreme violence, but we've been around like high pressure, like, environments where you're like, oh, if somebody does one thing stupid, this could all blow up. Right? Lesley Logan 6:42 I got really nervous at that one protest because this guy kept taunting the police and I was like, let's just go over here, because, like, it just, he's acting a little crazy. They're going to take it crazier, and then, who knows, but.Brad Crowell 6:55 But that's where I feel like that's why we need to focus on the non-violence, because it's important to make our voices heard. We have to make our voices heard. If we don't do that, then there are people who will make decisions that will that will hurt us, right, as a society and, literally, individually. But how do we do that in a way that doesn't make us exactly like them? Right?Lesley Logan 7:20 Yeah, well, you're going to call your congress person and senator every day. You are going to not pick every single company to boycott. I get it, lifestyle, we gotta do something. You know, we still shop in these places I'm not happy about, but you gotta, like, pick, like, I'm not doing these places or I'm gonna do, we did an FYFwhere I explained how you could, like, boycott in a way that was, like, successful for you and where your life is. How can you make sure that everyone you know goes out? Like, how can you do that? And, you know, there's just, there's just, there's always a way, no matter what your situation is. But I get that you're busy and I get that you're tired. I get that you're scared. We don't have time for that. And if you don't listen live in this country, and you're having to listen to us every Thursday talking about this, tell your American friends to get the fuck up and do some action, non-violent action. You know, we gotta do it. You know, it's just so important. And I promise you, you feel better after you do it. Non-violence, to me, does not mean telling people, like yelling what you want to yell out. That's what you could do at a protest. It's quite nice. I find it cathartic. Yeah, oh, I have a fit. We're gonna dig into this convo that Lesley had with Meghan Pherrill. Just a minute. Brad Crowell 19:08 All right, welcome back. Let's talk about Meghan Pherrill. Meghan Pherrill is one of the is the creator of Balanced by Meghan, a wellness brand and top Canadian podcast, Balance Your Life. Shaped by her journey through personal challenges and past trauma, Meghan discovered yoga, meditation and healthy eating habits as tools to rebuild her life and really battle OCD and debilitating trauma, right? Today, she inspires others to embrace small, sustainable changes that lead to a well -balanced life. Through retreats, workshops and her podcast, she empowers people to tune into their intuition, find patience in their healing journey, and create a life rooted in health, resilience and authenticity. So it was, it was, it was definitely interesting. It was an intriguing conversation. There's definitely a lot more to that conversation that you y'all didn't go into. But what? But, but what? Tell me what? What is one of the things that jumped out at you?Lesley Logan 20:00 Well, I think, like, what I what I really was interested in talking with her about, because being it till you see it is like she used to, she was, she is diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder, right? She had depression and anxiety, and, like, she now is in a whole different place in her life, right? And she worked through all those things. And I'm just like, I think that's really amazing. Because I think a lot of people have this badge of, oh, I have anxiety, or I'm depressed, or I have OCD, and they use it as like, and that's why I can't X, Y and Z. And she had this breakup that was a total wake up call for her, and she was able to realize that she'd become someone she didn't want to be. She didn't like who she was. And, I mean, it's kind of like last week's episode with Wendy Valentine, like out of a relationship, but different points in their life. Meghan is very young. Brad Crowell 20:45 Yeah, sure. Lesley Logan 20:46 And so it's a whole it's not like a midlife crisis, it's like a no, you're an adult now, and you're you don't like who, what's going on with your life and who you become. And so she put all this energy into into this relationship, and she changed herself, and she just didn't like who she so it didn't, didn't work, but she found herself in another way, which is, like, led her discovering yoga, and she got off her medications and started eating really clean, and that really allowed her to, like, start to become this person who you know isn't being controlled by OCD and depression anxiety.Brad Crowell 21:25 Yeah, I think the thing that I loved about that, that kind of buckles right into it, is that change from something like that, you know, it was, it was fast and slow at the same time. And she, she kind of emphasized that it it was quick in the grand scheme of things, but it wasn't quick in the moment, you know. And she said she felt so lost, and was, was like she talked about, you know, having the will to live, you know. And she realized that, she realized the necessity of trying to be happy. She said it was a long journey, but it was her truth, and that her advice for others starting their wellness journey is to just start with one thing, one thing at a time, and give yourself time to do the one thing like this isn't like one thing today and a new thing tomorrow, and a new thing the next day and a new thing the next day. Just like, just focus on one thing. I mean, we're talking obsessive compulsive in in a way that I've only seen portrayed in movies. You know, flip the lights on and off multiple times, open and shut the door multiple times, stand up, sit down. She mentioned something about checking her books, something like 46 times. I don't understand that, you know. I don't even understand what that why she's doing when she's when someone would be doing that.Lesley Logan 22:51 I know I think like, it's like, now I want to know more about OCD, because I do think people flip it and go, oh, I have OCD. Oh, you know. And I like, and maybe you do, but if.Brad Crowell 23:03 I think there are different, like, extremes of OCD.Brad Crowell 23:05 But like, this is completely time-consuming. I mean, she had a traumatic.Brad Crowell 23:14 You mentioned that you were like, man, that must have been so much time. And she said, you don't even know. She's like, yeah, it was a lot of time. Lesley Logan 23:14 Yeah, like, and, of course, that's what I focused on. Like, how much time is that? Like? Just seems like a lot of time. Is one reason why I could, I don't think I could become OCD because, like, I just can't. I hate wasting time that would really.Brad Crowell 23:27 Yeah, really what she what she said was quick was the breaking of the habits. And she said that was, and that was also from a interestingly, it was like a traumatic moment snapped her out of the some of the habits that she had formed. And it was her grandfather. She got news that her grandfather was, I don't remember if he was diagnosed or if he had actually passed away yet, but she, like he, he was incredibly important to her and and there was, like this, this moment of clarity that really changed things for her. And it's she stopped the habits, and then she's, you know, so now she's not, you know, checking her books 46 times, standing up and sitting down, 15 times, you know. And she said, all of a sudden, I had so much time on my hands. And then she asked, like she said, you know, what are you going to do with it? You might as well do something that makes you feel happier with that time.Lesley Logan 24:22 Yeah. And I think, like, I think how cool that she got to do it at such such a young age. Because I and now she's, like, her whole life is so different. She has an amazing podcast. She's got a kid and, like, and. Brad Crowell 24:34 Yeah it sounds like she connected with a really supportive boyfriend, and now husband, who happens to have a great name. Lesley Logan 24:40 Yeah, is it Brad? Brad Crowell 24:43 It is and, but he, he, you know, was helping her through the steps that that, like, like, kind of, I guess helping her through is the wrong way out. He was there alongside her, through the change. Lesley Logan 24:54 And I think, you know, I think that can go both ways. I think it could be like, oh, my. God, like I if you're alone and like, I just wish I had someone to go through this with. If you are currently alone, you, there are, there might be someone you can hire or like a person to go through with, that like you could bring on versus a partner. Because not every partner, like, don't like, not every partner is as great as this person, right? So she had a perfect person to be on her side who would like, could see the person she wanted to become, and could envision that dream and like, be there for all the journey. But you might end up finding out you're with someone who doesn't want to be part of that journey, and then it makes it so. I would just say, like, don't be jealous, or think it, the grass is green on that side. If you're wanting to make a change like this, there are people out there who want to help you. You know, there are, there are services out there. And I that's one of the things I find so fast, and the more I learn about services in the world, there are literally services. There is a charity who will do anything. So, like, there's going to be someone out there, you it's not the easiest thing to, like, look for help. But like, we had that one guy on who talked about all the different ways you can get money or food or diapers. We just found out from the charity we donate to that they will help people who can't afford dog food get dog food so they can keep the dog so the dogs are not going to the shelter. So like, there is some so if you are needing help with something right now, and her journey has, like, sparked something new, like, please advocate for yourself to get help.Brad Crowell 26:23 Yeah, there's a community called the International OCD Foundation, or the IOCDF, and it provides education, resources, community support, professional training, you know, so you can there definitely are tools, you know, if you are feeling isolated, yeah.Lesley Logan 26:40 I love it. I think it's really, I think it's really cool. I don't, I don't know anyone who's had this, but I've always wondered, like, what it's like, and it was really nice of her to share that with us and then share how she's changed her life.Brad Crowell 26:52 Yeah, yeah. Lesley Logan 26:53 It's a true be it till you see it story. Lesley Logan 26:56 I'm it was, you know, and I'm excited for her that she, you know, has been moving forward and building these things, and, you know, starting a family and doing all this stuff. So that's great. It's, you know, I think she's clearly doing things that are making her happier. So, good for her. Brad Crowell 27:12 Yeah, we can all learn from that. Yeah. Brad Crowell 27:13 Yeah. Brad Crowell 27:22 All right, so finally, let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Meghan Pherrill? She said, hey, start with meditating five minutes a day. It will absolutely change your life, just five minutes. And she said, if you're brand new to this, maybe set aside 10 minutes so that you can get five minutes in, because it is hard. You know, I can tell you from personal experience, what do you think about when you're meditating? Are you supposed to think about things? Are you like? You know, I don't really know. I've all these preconceived notions of what it is, she said, but ultimately, recognize that you can five minutes is just five minutes. You got this, right, but she said, choose a style that resonates with you. She said if you struggle with to quiet your mind, but you can listen, maybe you do an opted maybe you do a guided meditation where you're listening to a YouTube video. I've done this, you know, and that's I find that really helpful, because it allows me to focus on something instead of just letting my mind wander. If you prefer physical a physical element, you can try breath work style meditation, which obviously we've also done, especially with your, you know, being breathwork certified, and then that will really help you focus on your breath and, you know, counting and just focusing on that thing. You know, for you know, we often talk about in yoga and in Pilates, that it is a movement meditation, because when you're when you're when you are so focused on the movement, you cannot think about anything else like there's no room for it in your head. And that is a form of meditation, right? That's where that mind body connection starts to happen, kind of a thing. And she said there's plenty of relatable teachers and resources out there. Find someone online. You can find someone on YouTube or podcast apps who you like their voice.Lesley Logan 29:13 There is this one person who I heard on a podcast when she said that she has an 11-second meditation, she turns it on, and the person goes, inhale, exhale. That's 11 seconds. Brad Crowell 29:32 Amazing. Lesley Logan 29:33 Yeah. Brad Crowell 29:34 Well, you too can meditate. And then she said get comfortable. And she said, some people like to meditate first thing in the morning. So if you're getting comfortable in your bed, make sure you sit up, otherwise you're just gonna fall back asleep. But meditation doesn't require a rigid posture, per se, right? You don't need to be like stiff as a statue, or like a monk or whatever. You can lie down, or you can be in a comfortable position, you know, just be aware that it's you know. If you're doing it right after you've woken up, you might just fall back asleep on your seat. Brad Crowell 29:59 I get in the cold plunge before I meditate. That's just like, it's not gonna happen.Brad Crowell 30:04 Hey, that's a great idea. It's a great idea. And then you know when, when the two you're talking you were talking about permission to be imperfect, right? It's not about being perfectly still or having the clearest mind. It's about being kind to ourselves and setting aside time to let our brain think and process things, and you know, in a subconscious way that we're not like actively, you know, we're creating space for that's what the meditation will do.Lesley Logan 30:34 Yeah, we talked a little bit about one more thing that I think, is it's, it's really beautiful, and it kind of springs true with last week. So if you're avoiding last week's Be It Action Item, this is gonna keep knocking on your door until you do it. But first she said, follow that intuition of yours. Just run with it and go with it. I'm studying tarot right now, and you'll know why, because we have a tarot guest coming up. I'm studying it. And the High Priestess card is all about the intuition. And like, like, going into your intuition and having some making sure that you're, like, understanding, because it's mystery. Like, intuition is also like, a mystery, right? Like, what is it? What am I saying? What am I feeling? Is that my is that my words? But anyways, so you can think of it as a High Priestess card and learning about that. Or you can figure out, like, how, how do you best understand what your intuition is saying, What does it sound like to you? So she said, just whatever's calling you or resonate with you. Follow that intuition of yours. Just run with it and go with it like just leap, right? And then she also said, don't make it complicated. Just start and see how you feel. And she also reminded us to give it some time too. It's not a one time thing. So we said it before, we're saying it again, not a one-time thing, you have to keep doing it. And she also said, as you're doing it, how did I feel? How did I feel? And that's so important, because we know from how habits are truly created, it has to actually bring joy. And dopamine, get your dopamine high. If you don't, you're not going to get that habit. If it feels like it's shameful, or like you're judging yourself, it's possible that's not your intuition, and you're following someone else's thing, so.Brad Crowell 32:06 I think, I think that's one of the things I constantly remind myself, but also when people ask me, why do you do a cold plunge every morning? You know it's a decision. But how do I feel afterwards? I've been describing it as the best cup of coffee I didn't have. Yeah, you know, you feel alert, awake immediately, and the cold is only cold for a second. Right? And now, like, because I've done it so many times that, like, shock of cold water isn't really even there anymore, even when, when the when the temperatures in the 40s, you know? Because, yeah, it's cold, but, like, I already know what to expect. But afterwards, even with just three minutes, it feels, you feel your brain is going it is actually functioning. You're up and at 'em. It's awesome, so.Lesley Logan 33:03 I hate it and love it, and I actually, I was on Meghan's podcast, and she asked me about cold plunging, and she was like, yeah, because everyone's saying, like, you shouldn't cold like, women shouldn't cold plunge. Oh yeah, oh yeah. Because being a woman means being told to cold plunge and not cold plunge. Being told, being told to do this and not do this. It's like, it's like, just, we talked about in Amy Ledin's pod episode that's coming out in December, and we're talking about habits. We're gonna have a whole habit series. So this really is building up for that. But like being a woman today, with everyone going wear a weight vest, it's not gonna do anything. Do a cold plunge. It's the worst thing you can do during a little cycle. Blah, blah, blah, I told Meghan, I said, I don't actually care. I and you have to listen to the whole conversation, but I'm summarizing. Jennifer [00:00:00]: Hi, welcome back to the podcast. I'm Jennifer. Ashlee [00:00:03]: And I'm Ashlee. Jennifer [00:00:04]: And I get to introduce our guest today. And as always, we have a special guest. And I was reflecting. I'm like, I actually think I've known this guest since I've been born and I'm not related to them. So it's the first time for that. But we have Dr. Charles Baker with us today and I'm just going to give it to you, Dr. Baker, to tell us a little bit about yourself. Dr. Charles Baker [00:00:23]: First of all, thanks for having me and hope I can add something to your podcast here from my background and experiences. Well, I'm originally from Louisville, Kentucky. Grew up here, went to high school here and began college here. I went to Western Kentucky University for a year right out of high school. And that's a little bit relevant to My first real job was on the Louisville Police Department. Today it's the Louisville Metro Police Department. Back in the day, it was the city of Louisville. It's I began my work there in January 8th of 1973. Jennifer [00:00:57]: Okay. Dr. Charles Baker [00:00:58]: After having one year of college at Western Kentucky, I went to Western out of high school with the goal of being a high school teacher and a coach. But a good friend of my father's was a Louisville police officer and they were in a hiring spree at that time and he encouraged me. So I went down, took the test, and before I knew it, I was in recruit school in January at 70. And that was not my plan. But once I got there, I really super enjoyed it and began my career there. We can get into that later and a lot of it's relevant to what I do today, but I had a lot of assignments during my time there, enjoyed every bit of it. So anyway, I got sidetracked for several years with the Louisville Police Department. And like I said, I had one year of college there while I was on the department. Dr. Charles Baker [00:01:47]: The training officers that I had at that time encouraged me to continue to go to college. And we had a federal grant, the leap money that came out of the late 60s, federal grant to pay for college. So I enrolled at the University of Louisville part time while I was working. And it was those original trainers that I had that encouraged me to do that. And I'm always grateful for the department for allowing me to do that and actually paying for it. It was a challenge to go full time to work full time and go to get your degree. But I ended up with my master's degree because of the police. But I did 20 years there, worked in a variety of assignments But I retired when I had my 20 years in and it was, I didn't leave because I disliked the job. Dr. Charles Baker [00:02:32]: I really enjoyed it. But I was young enough to do something else in life and allowed me to go back and do what I originally wanted to do, be a high school. During that career time, I also went back to school to get my high school teaching certification. So when I retired from the police department, I could teach social studies in high school, Kentucky certification. And I got a job teaching at, actually the high school that I attended, Iroquois High School. I taught for a couple of two years there, and then I went to a law enforcement magnet at another school and I was in my third year teaching and my wife worked for an airline and she got transferred to Phoenix, Arizona. So, so at that time I was very emotional about this, but I had to quit my job and go out there. And so I only did three years of what I really wanted to do originally right out of high school. Dr. Charles Baker [00:03:24]: But I had a good time doing that, went to Arizona, and my first job out there was director of security for the Mesa, Arizona Public. So I became chief of security for them. That was my job when I, when we left to move out there and did that for seven years, my boss, an assistant superintendent, and he hooked me up with a professor at Arizona State University who talked me into earning my doctorate at Arizona State. So moved to Arizona. Instead of watching TV at night, I'd go to college and finished my doctorate and my dissertation tied in law enforcement as well as education. And back then, this was Columbine High school day. So my dissertation was about the attitudes of school principal in reporting crime from school. Ashlee [00:04:13]: Oh, wow. Dr. Charles Baker [00:04:13]: Is that relevant at that time? 20 some years later, it might be worthy of a follow up with that to see if it's changed. But anyway, finished my doctorate, I had the opportunity to become a professor at Scottsdale Community College. And so I finished my time. I did about seven years at Mesa Schools and 12 years teaching college, got to retire and we moved back home. And since then I've been here teaching as an adjunct at the university. So that's the Cliff Notes version. Ashlee [00:04:45]: That is incredible. And now I want to go read your dissertation. Dr. Charles Baker [00:04:50]: Well, it might be boring, so. Ashlee [00:04:52]: No, no, not at all. I feel all of that. So I'm excited to have you on here to talk about that. I'm like, oh my gosh, this is amazing. Jennifer [00:05:01]: Well, and I don't know that I knew that your story was so full circle in terms of going to a teacher's college at Western University. And that always being a bit of your calling. And so it makes sense that you kind of merge these two worlds together. And do you find that your experience on the police department influences how you profess or your teaching of the criminal justice? Dr. Charles Baker [00:05:28]: You know, when I started teaching criminal justice at the community college level, a lot of entry level courses, survey courses of the criminal justice system, not just policing and those, but looking at policing, the courts and corrections, you know, the three stool, three legs on the stool generally of policing. So I try to incorporate all those in, but basically with the police being the catalyst for all of those without police investigating crimes, making arrests, we don't go to the court system, we don't go to the correctional system. And so I try to incorporate all of those in there. And. But it's been helpful, especially again, these survey courses that introduce you to constitutional law and those kind of things, I try to gear it toward how that impacts the people that work in the freedom of speech to protest and those kind of things. And what police officers need to know about balancing a community's right to express their views publicly, but yet not cross the line and interrupt with civil order, civil disobedience, how to balance those kind of things out. You know, the search and seizure, the right to remain silent, all those things, how the police officer on the street has to understand those and know the limits of their authority and those kind of things. So I've been trying to incorporate the, the practicality of that with sort of the words, textbook words, the academic words. Dr. Charles Baker [00:06:55]: And I think students have generally appreciated that. Ashlee [00:06:59]: So, yeah, and that was kind of our next question or one that I had was how, how your students kind of respond. Do you give your own real world examples of what it was like for you when you were an officer? And how do they respond to that? Dr. Charles Baker [00:07:13]: Well, upfront, I tell them a lot of times and this gets a little bit, I don't know how to say it, maybe touchy right now because I've always tried to play devil's advent and come up with scenarios during the classroom of practical situations that may occur on the street. And I would tell them up front, these are not always my views. I'm just playing devil's advocate to encourage discussion, to encourage you to come forward and share your thoughts. And so I might say something that's not what I truly believe, but just to foster some discussion in the classroom. And I would bring up scenarios and I would tell them they're not all mine. They might be some of my colleagues that have been involved again in this day and time, I think we have to be cautious about that because I could come up with a devil's advocate sort of scenario and someone think that's the way I truly feel, especially when it comes to race relations. When we talk about George Floyd, we talk about Breonna Taylor and all those kind of cases, it can become emotional and you just have to be cautious about how you phrase things so that they don't think that that's the way you truly mean. But we have to, I really believe this in academia, we gotta. Dr. Charles Baker [00:08:25]: We gotta discuss the truthful things that go on in our society, even if they're unpleasant or maybe hurtful. Jennifer [00:08:32]: Yeah, I think that that's a really good point in trying to walk that line of giving real life experiences and not having it. How to be viewed as your own perspective, from your perspective, what do you feel like are some, maybe misconceptions or things that get brought up in, you know, in the classroom that are misconceptions around criminal justice? Dr. Charles Baker [00:08:57]: Well, I think one of that strikes me and it's, it's interesting. Having done this for a long time, I do things. I do some online classes too, so I have a lot of what I call critical thinking questions. There's no right or wrong answers, but their responses are, you know, if we were in the classroom, it would be class participation. Raise your hand and speak up. Online. It's writing, writing your responses. I found out that they will post online more, I don't know, truthfulness or their feelings more than they will verbally in a classroom with other people where someone could look at them. Dr. Charles Baker [00:09:35]: I'm finding that out. I can see how attitudes have changed among students in a lot of areas over the course of the years. One example of that is I would ask them that if someone died of a drug overdose and the person that sold them those drugs illegally that killed them, do they have some level of responsibility? The person that sold them years ago, it would be, no, no, no, no, no. The person that bought the drugs and took the drugs, it's their responsibility. I've seen that evolve over the years where now they're willing to hold the person that sold them the illegal drugs more culpable. And I'm not saying them all. I'm just saying statistically, I'm seeing more that agree with that than did several years ago. But I think misconceptions, obviously one it's been for a long time, is police drive fast and they shoot guns and they do this, you know, the TV type stuff. Dr. Charles Baker [00:10:30]: And I would tell Many, many of your hours a day are boring, driving around, patrolling and writing reports. And I, this is one thing that I have emphasized particularly when I worked at community college out in Arizona because we worked closely with the local police departments around there and they would tell us that the shortcomings they're seeing their recruits are the ability to write, the ability to document what they did. What they did may have been correct, what they did investigation, but it becomes lacking because they don't know how to articulate it in writing. So when you emphasize writing, that's not the fun stuff. Okay. But I tell them how, how critical and important that is. So that's, you know, the fallacies of that and the perception because of media, I believe with high profile cases of George Floyd and horrible, horrible cases of things, they see bad things that police do sometimes and then they, they sort of lump it all into one pile. They, they stereotype a lot for that. Dr. Charles Baker [00:11:35]: And I have to emphasize to them that the vast majority of police officers just want to go out and do a good job and want to go home to their families at the end of the day and they're not out to racially profile or are there exceptions to that like any other? So those, some of them that I've Misconception. Ashlee [00:11:52]: Yeah. And I love to hear this. I also think like, we actually have a lot of listeners who aren't even in the first responder world, which is really cool. And I think for those listeners too, this is such a great opportunity to learn that, that these things are being talked about because I think it's easy for a lot of people who are not in the first responder world to feel like it isn't considered. These things aren't talked about. We turn our heads to it. Right. Like that's what I hear a lot. Ashlee [00:12:18]: And I know that that's not true from working in it so much, but to hear it from you and to hear how well first off you articulate it, amazing. And, and so to hear that and to learn from you, I think is going to be really helpful to our listeners because you're right, we have to talk about. Dr. Charles Baker [00:12:32]: You can't just bury your head in the sand and they won't go and they'll all go away. So I think that's important for at the college level or other levels too, even at the high school level sometimes. I did a couple of law enforcement or, excuse me, criminal justice type classes in high school and I thought they were valuable, particularly young people at that time to be aware of what the Reality of policing was that they face, you know, when they see a police officer on the street, they see it hopefully totally different. Disgusted. Ashlee [00:13:02]: Absolutely. Absolutely. And, and how do you, I know you kind of hit on this a little bit, but maybe you can dive in a little bit more of like, how do you balance your own knowledge with the academic part? Like, especially if it kind of goes against what you have thought, you know, within your career and how things have evolved so much like, I guess, your, your personal self. How do you manage that when we're. Dr. Charles Baker [00:13:24]: That'S a good, that's a really good question. A couple of years ago here at the university, they have the Southern Police Institute, Jennifer, probably, and they had a, an opportunity for me to go teach that class. And I went through that program in 1982. So that shows you how old and so I welcome the opportunity to go teach. And that had law enforcement comman

The 16:9 PODCAST IS SPONSORED BY SCREENFEED – DIGITAL SIGNAGE CONTENT If you go to big outdoor sports events, concerts in parks or even political rallies, there's a reasonable chance that what's happening is going to be relayed on a portable LED display that was wheeled into place by trailer. My local footy team uses one and it is old and looks terrible. But that's not the norm, and certainly not for a Des Moines, Iowa company that is very specifically in the business of making and selling great-looking and bulletproof on-the-go LED trailers. Insane Impact has been at it for eight years and now has almost 500 units operating, mostly but not only in the United States. The flagship product is 17 feet wide by 10 feet tall, using 4mm LED and pushing as much as 7,500 nits. It's been designed to roll into place and be up and running in 10 minutes or less - even if a doofus like me was told to get it lit up. I had a really good chat with Tod Puetz, who started the company after first being a user, when he was in the golf equipment business. In this podcast, we get into a lot of things - including how he had the foresight to get ahead of the tariffs turmoil and pre-ordered enough electronics and hardware to hopefully ride out these uncertain months. We also talk about use-cases and probably the most curious application to date - drive-in funerals when COVID was raging. Subscribe from wherever you pick up new podcasts. TRANSCRIPT Tod, thank you for joining me. Can you tell me what Insane Impact does, where you're based, those kinds of nuts and bolts questions? Tod Puetz: Yeah, appreciate it Dave. Insane Impact, primarily focused on LED as a business, but we are an audio video integration company based out of Des Moines, Iowa. Des Moines. So you're in flyover country? Tod Puetz: Absolutely. It's actually very handy there because you're like two hours away from the East Coast and two hours away from the West coast, right? Tod Puetz: It really is. Just in proximity here in the central part of the US, where our corporate office and warehouse location is about 65 seconds from the airport Des Moines International, so very easy to get in. All the major interstate throwaways between I-29 North and South and I-35 North and South, and then I-80 West. We're pretty much within minutes of getting anywhere we need to go east, west, north, or south. Nice. How long has the company been around? Tod Puetz: We started up in 2015, flipped the switch basically late December, 2015 and have been going rock and roll. So we're coming up on our 10 year anniversary here in December. You are a founder? Tod Puetz: I am, yeah. Founder and CEO. So what compelled you to do this? What did you see in the marketplace that said, okay, this is what I should do? Tod Puetz: Yeah, really the CliffNotes version, my former life was in the golf business. I was a manufacturer sales rep for TaylorMade Golf, and I was introduced to a gentleman here locally in Des Moines that had an older video truck and basically saw an opportunity to utilize that as a sales tool to help me sell more golf clubs. So we took this video truck out on the driving range here locally in Des Moines, hooked it up to the launch monitor and, gosh, that was almost 18 years ago. Back then it was a big deal. Not a lot of people in your run of the mill average daily golfer really ever had an op opportunity to do that. They'd seen it on tour. But we brought the bigs out to the little team here in some of these country clubs, and again, larger than life. They were able to see their stats up on the screen and really fell in love with the technology back then, and were able to utilize that for a number of years after that initial introduction. What was it back then? What was the technology back then, early LED? Tod Puetz: It was an SMD, It was an early 8x8 millimeter SMD back then. I refer to it as antiquated, but back then, it was pretty fresh and new. But yeah, just the idea of being able to drive this thing up to the driving range, the wings folded open on this thing and, within minutes we're plug and play and just really, fell in love with that concept. , Yeah. So did you buy the business from him or just get something going on your own? Tod Puetz: Did not. We utilized them. It was a kind of a one man show there. It was more of a hobby for individuals, and they used it for four or five years. But they weren't interested in scaling this thing. As my career with TaylorMade progressed more and more, I ended up working with other companies, just trying to understand the LED business. So I branched out and helped a few other smaller LED niche companies to try to generate some business in the sports space. We just had a lot of relationships with the golf business and yeah, really just took the concept and I knew there was a different mouse trap here with that type of opportunity to scale it, that's where we started things in late 2015. So the idea is just at its bare essentials, and I think most people understand this anyways, but just in case, is you've got a foldable all in one LED display that's on a trailer and your customers are rolling it out to different locations, whether they're entertainment events, sports events or something else, and finding power, plugging it in, open it, and driving a signal to it, and you've got a big display where it needs to be for three days or three weeks or whatever it is, right? Tod Puetz: Yeah, absolutely. By no means, does Insane Impact claim to be the inventor of mobile LED. Obviously, that has been one man for a very long time. Our business, Insane Impact, started up on the rental side. We designed, fabricated and engineered a handful of units, just to service what we thought was gonna be a Midwest boutique rental business and very quickly became a national presence. And what we found was that the same people were renting products two, three and four times a year, and really, our thought process was, why don't we just own one of these things, and we can use it 365 days a year, if we want? And again, there were already customers out there, there were common trucks that were selling trailers, but it wasn't popular and we really started working back in 2016 to develop a plan where if you own the product, we can certainly start to feed your business as well, you can be part of our rental network and that's really what kind of, put the fuel on the fire. Each year, more and more units in the field, more and more customers from parks and municipalities, armed forces, college, university, all of the usual suspects out there that use these things on a regular basis, really became the traction for rapid growth in this endeavor. So your company, it's an interesting kind of mashup of different competencies, so to speak, in that if you are manufacturing rolling stock with lots of heavy-duty metals and wheels and everything else, that's one thing. And then at the polar opposite, you've got fairly sensitive electronics. So you're doing both sides of that, right? Tod Puetz: Yeah, absolutely. We take a fully engineered and manufactured trailer. These trailers weigh anywhere from 3,500 pounds on our smallest unit up to 18,000 pounds on a triple axle gooseneck. And they've got real high end LEDs permanently. We've approached it a little bit differently. We're putting a fixed product on it. So something that's used to and withstands the elements pretty much anywhere, including the road, and then obviously everything else on the unit is fully protected from shock, from absorption of weather. Everything's IP67 through the components side of things, and IP65 on the trailer, fully powder coated system. So we've really built, tried, and tested a product that's gonna last and withstand the elements going up and down the road at 75 miles an hour in any extreme environment. I'm guessing that you, in your early years, had some lessons, whether they were hard ones or whatever. Tod Puetz: Yeah, absolutely. It wouldn't be any fun if we didn't. Our first major lesson that we learned, Dave and I think this is really what sets us apart is that we did the hang and bang modular cabinets on our product for the first, probably two and a half years and we learned the lesson real quick that those just aren't designed to withstand the long-lasting road and weather, wear and tear. At the time, that's what everybody was using it and that's kind of where we were at. It took a lot of headaches, blood and sweat, for those first two years to figure out what product really made sense. For the last four and a half years, we've really been rock and rolling on a specific product, chassis, and stuff that just really outperformed, in a big way. So that was a very painful lesson because you're a year into this thing, and you've got issues, and those are hard to come by as a startup, but we were able to weather the storm and find what really worked for us and I think that really separate us from most right now is we just, we're putting some of the best products out there on the market on these trailers. And you not only have to make it bulletproof, but I suspect you have to do it down like crazy, because this can not be something that takes 45 minutes and has a checklist, like launching a rocket or something. It's gotta roll into place and find power and open the hinges, lock them down, and get a signal in, right? Tod Puetz: Yeah, you nailed it. I think one of the things as we built this thing out, Dave, is that the single most important part was customer focus and customer friendly, and I will tell you that you yourself, or even my 18-year-old daughter, can get this thing up and running in less than 10 minutes. We pride ourselves on delivering a turnkey functional unit to our flagship product, which is our Max 1710. You can pull in, and it'll take you longer to unhook it than it will to turn it on and set it up in some respects. We offer a generator-powered option or a battery-powered option. We've got a fully self-sustained, lithium-ion pack that is performing at an incredible level right now, which we're really excited about. So we worked with a major organization probably about 18 months ago, in the Armed Forces space, and we worked with them to design a fully self-sustainable battery pack solution and were really excited about that. We can talk about that a little bit more here, but at the end of the day, our electronics cabinet is an IP67 rated rack that basically opens it up, and as you know, with everything, we run Nova Star. So everything is just a straight playback video. So just hit the breakers, hit the power switch, and you're off and running. So we really did wanna make this thing turnkey. They come fully self-sustained with audio as well. We wanted to make sure that anybody and everybody could operate this thing very quickly. Is there a media playout box in there, or do you use an external feed and then just plug it into an HDMI or whatever it may be? Tod Puetz: Plenty of different options. Most often our customers, like your Park and Rec municipality, the people that are using this thing to play movies and stuff, they're just streaming it off the laptop. But we got an IO box that they can drop in, SDI, fiber, anything else if you're running or whatever it might be. But yeah, anybody can bring us any signal within, within a minute, and we're up and running. So really trying to get in that turnkey facet of this thing to make sure that we're in a good spot. Okay, so you're sourcing the trailer from a third-party manufacturer as opposed to bending metal and doing all that yourself and you're sourcing the electronics, and you're basically doing final assembly, right? Tod Puetz: Correct. Yep. Doing it the other way would be very complicated. Tod Petz: We did that when we first started this little venture, we hired engineers, we bought the welders, we were buying cut parts and building them ourselves, and we realized very quickly that in a 4,000 square foot facility that when this thing takes up, it'd be impossible to keep up. So we were very fortunate to find a local vendor that was in the trailer business already but they took a liking to what we were doing, and it really has just been a wonderful partnership and relationship with them. They build a fantastic product, best-in-class warranty around it, and it's really the fit and the finish from premium laser cut, premium powder coat finishes, all the details that are there, and certainly, we work with some of the best engineers out there in the marketplace to create the best product so really exciting to have that partnership. On the LED side and the electronics side, we're taking the trailer and we're taking the electronics and we're putting the fit and finish on it and making it function and delivering a finished product. I assume you have some sort of a contract manufacturer or a finished goods supplier in, whether it's China, Taiwan, or somewhere else you're sourcing from. Tod Puetz: On the electronic side, yeah, we do. So we actually just made an announcement here yesterday. We are partnered with DVS (Dynamic Visual Solutions). We've been working with them for almost six years now. Obviously, Chinese based, but we got in touch with the owner and the CEO of the US business almost six years ago and kind of started to understand what it meant for us and what it meant for them to be a partner and really have our hands on the technology, help them with some of the design elements that we needed within the product to make sure that it was gonna pass the buck and make sure that it lasted and, almost six years later. But, yeah, we just had a nice press release announcing the partnership. We got a huge opportunity with them with the craziness that's going on out there in the space. But great company, wonderful products, best-in-class warranties, and we've had the ability to shape what that product needs to be on our trailers. I suspect that was a bit of a journey too, finding the right supplier because we've all heard the stories about different companies who make a lot of promises, but what shows up isn't what you thought you were getting. Tod Puetz: Yeah, it was. So we had gone through probably three to five different manufacturers, three to four at least prior to getting with DVS and it's very painful on that side of it because you are dealing with somebody over in China, and sleepless nights and figuring stuff out and a startup and all of the fun things that happen around that. When we were able to locate, DVS was based out of Florida. They really just took a liking to what we were doing and threw all the chips on the table and said, we've got a great modular rental business going, but we're really intrigued about this mobile solution. How can we help? And we really started to dig cautiously optimistic out of the gate because there are thousands of people out there trying to get the business in some respects. Could we go to one of the major five or six? Yeah, we certainly could have, but we felt like there was a little bit more of an intimate approach to this. We were a newer company. We took our time getting into what we really wanted, and we felt like we had a little more leverage working with a decent-sized company. And with somebody who's got an office in Florida as opposed to Shenzhen or Beijing. Tod Puetz: Correct. I don't want to get too deep into what's going on right now, but how are you navigating the tariff situation right now? Tod Puetz: Yeah, that's the million dollar question and in some cases, multi millions. When I started this company, Dave, I had two stances that I wanted to live by. One, I was gonna over-index on our employees and make sure that we had the right people in the right seats, and take very good care of them. The other one that came later on, probably after we had established and it was I'm never gonna run out of products. I just know that if we have products, we'll sell them. So after those first three, four years, we put ourselves in a position where we've rubber stamped our products, we know who we're selling to, we know what our core markets are, and we've got the right people in the right seats and I just knew that if I would run out of product, then I just make sure that we are collectively chasing the business. That's a really hard thing to do. But fortunately, we've got the right vendors to do this with. So back in November, after the current administration was elected or they won the nomination, knowing that this discussion of tariffs was on the horizon, we took a very calculated and risky approach, but we went out and bought a slew of equipment. So we bought basically upwards of almost a year of supply in LEDs out front. We went to our trailer manufacturer. They bought a year's worth of supply of our top three SKUs and hedged the bet with us. So we're in a little different position than most, again, there are a lot of people out there who probably did the same thing. I'm not the only one out there who took that risk, but we did take the risk, and it's certainly paying off. That kind of gets you an idea of where we're at and how we've run our business. We just don't wanna run out of products. So fast forward to today in reality, I think there's a blinking that's happening, there's a stance, and this isn't a political statement by any means. This is just our gut feeling on this is, I feel like it's gotta loosen up a little bit here. It can only go so hard and so fast. But we've been able to weather the tariff storm, internally at Insane, impacted by some of the stuff we did on the front end. We have not been significantly impacted by LEDs. If we're to place orders today on LEDs. Honestly, it's been fairly minimal in the impact. We're seeing some of the expensive shipping surcharges that are happening. But I think there's just buying power that's come with some of the things that we've done with our manufacturer to keep them rocking and rolling, that have helped us mitigate a little bit of this. But you're not like some of these companies where they're wringing their hands, okay, in order to get something out of a container in Long Beach, California, I need to write a check for an extra million dollars that I had not anticipated. Tod Puetz: Yeah, we're not dealing with that. I think where this thing's really impacted, the hundreds of, I'm just gonna call them mom and pop manufacturers over there, whether they're manufacturers or just the days of them just shipping, 12x7s into the States by air is probably coming to an end or they're pricing themselves out of the market a little bit. Either that or they just don't care. But I think a lot of this is the consolidation in the short-term impact that we've seen in real life. The long-term impact, in my opinion, is gonna weed some of them out, and then obviously you've got all the Chinese entity companies, the larger players in the game that are having to come to market with distribution here in the US, where it impacts us the most. So they're adding additional layers of cost and it's really gonna open the door from what we're seeing, it's gonna open the door for us to other markets by virtue of that since we're already and established US distributor. When you first got in touch, I didn't know that much about you and thought, you're a rental company, but I was intrigued that, sure, you do rentals, but really, you're a manufacturer and you're selling to companies who are more regional rental companies. That's accurate, correct? Tod Puetz: Yeah, it's interesting. So we've really got three business units, Dave. But we started off as a rental company with a primary focus on the mobile solution. We did have modular hanging bangs as well that we took care of some specific customers, but when we kinda uncovered the opportunity, evolved is a great word into the more offside of the business selling video trailers, that opened up a whole other segment of opportunity for us to then really start to take a look at the fixed install stuff. Our three business units are really, primarily led by the mobile video solution on the trailers, and other new innovative products coming. Now, by the way, we do the marquees and the scoreboards and the highway signs, the airport conference room takeover stuff. We do all of that as well, and oh, by the way, customers that have video trailers, they become part of our cross-rental network. So this nucleus business unit feeds that we have, one feeds the other and that feeds another. It's really that we create a really cool situation here that allows us to have return business from our customers in all of those different facets. Because if you can't afford it, you can rent it. If you rent it too many times, then you can afford to buy it, and oh, by the way, we can replace your scoreboard or we can replace your, your, your classroom or your theater, modular wall, whatever it might be. We do all three of them, and we do, we feel like we do them pretty well, and again, we're very lucky to have those three business units that fill the pipeline on a regular basis. Is there a rule of thumb as to that point where, okay, we can rent this five times a year and that makes financial sense, but there's a certain break point where it makes more sense just to buy it? Tod Puetz: Yeah, that's a wonderful question because it really comes down to there's such a tremendous education process. Again, up until maybe, really when we started, at least here in the US, there was nobody else that was mass producing or really proactively selling to the end customer, and when we started doing that, we were very fortunate just to have some relationships where they actually saw the light. “Oh, this makes sense.” Yeah, it's a high school or a college, and they're using it for their game day stuff. But what's been more fun for me in this company is to see just the evolution of the education that's had that's happened. Going to a city administrator and telling them, hey, it's not just the three movie nights a year, it's all of your chamber events. It's the community support events, it's the fundraiser stuff. So when they start to understand the use case of these items, these trailers, and that they can turn and burn and have these things up and running, whether it's just mass notification, you've got storms coming, or just any and all of those things. Once they understand the full use case of applications that these products can offer, then the light comes on, and then it becomes a much easier conversation for them to take to the stakeholders and say, alright, we really need this. Here are all the reasons why. So our sales team is incredibly focused on the educational side of the business on how this can impact the community, campus, etc. I realize you have a number of different sizes and everything else, but, for your primary selling unit, what would that cost? And if I wanted to rent it for a weekend, if I'm in Ames, Iowa, what would that cost to rent it for a weekend? Tod Puetz: Yeah, great question. So our flagship product is our Max 1710. So 17 wide, 10 foot tall, 3.9 millimeters on their turnkey generator operation, delivery, and tech. To rent that thing for a day, in this market, it does vary a little bit based on coast to coast. You get a three-day festival and you're spending $7,500 to 8,000 bucks for a screen that's operated that comes turnkey, that has power if needed. That's gonna turn the lights on and be reliable. So that's a pretty good snapshot of what we offer from a rate card on that specific product. If somebody wants to buy it, I'm gonna say turnkey trailer screen electronics, generator, audio. If you want the Mac Daddy package delivered to your doorstep, you're in that $150-160k range, which is gonna get you, 10-year parts, five-year labor on LED screen warranty, five-year parts, five-year labor on the trailer warranty, and then obviously an electronics warranty. So you're really protecting the investment there, Dave. We're not the most expensive in the marketplace. We're definitely not the least. We feel like we're in a really good slot, and I think our adoption within the marketplace probably supports that. But that gives you a quick snapshot of where we're at from the pricing structure. So if you're a company that's on the rental side of it, you could see an ROI in a year if you're in a busy market. Tod Puetz: Absolutely. Yeah. I think, 1710, and this doesn't factor in your cogs, your travel, your truck, your tech, etc. Sure. But if you get 20 to 25 really strong rental events within your market on a single day's use, you're right there certainly, being able to pay it back. And it goes back to that education process. When we sell a customer a unit, we don't guarantee them any business, in terms of what we can bring to them from the cross-rental network. We're very forthright about that. But what does happen is if you're a proven, vetted, rental partner out there in the marketplace, you can bet, you're gonna get some help with monetizing this thing. That's the unique part about this business relationship with our customers on the trailer side is: we're gonna help you guys monetize the unit over time. I have season tickets to the local Canadian Premier League soccer team that does very well here. They pull 6,500 people to games, but it's at a somewhat temporary stadium, and they have an LED display, it looks like maybe a 17x10 on a truck. I severely doubt it's yours because it's a piece of crap. It's not very bright, it's not very crisp or anything, but it's something, so I gather that this can be all over the map in terms of what you rent. If you're an end user, you have to pay attention to the specs. Tod Puetz: Absolutely. We prided ourselves on being the leader when it comes to what products are out there on mobile products, in and of itself. But it really comes down to the screen at the end of the day. I guess we will probably take it a step further. We do take a lot of pride in the physical trailer itself, the metal that this thing rides on, because that's as important to me as it's the LED. But at the end of the day, having something that you can put up in direct sunlight and have the most quality, crisp image, is what we've over-indexed on that in a good way. So what we come to market with is a 7500 nit, 3.9 product, competitively in the marketplace. 3.9 from our core competitors are in that 4500-5500 nit and it just overpowers everything. So again, if you're rolling up to the game for a little pre-game watch party, you're gonna get the best viewing experience possible, with some of the product. But we do pay a lot of attention to the spec, the physical components, the quality, and that's very close to our chest, so we don't take that for granted. So you're doing lots of sports and entertainment events, probably some corporate events. I'm curious, what's the most unusual one that you're aware of? Tod Puetz: It was interesting. You look at Covid and the impact that it had on the industry, and all of these companies out there that have stages and rigging and modular and everything else, they took a little bit of a bath at the onset of Covid, and really, what allowed us to squeeze in and continue to, I would say, entertain, but take care of customers that had to continue to engage, whether it was employees or crowds or whatever. So we did everything. But this leads up to your question, doing drive-in funerals was probably one of the most unique things that we've done. They couldn't get into the churches, so we were pulling up to large parking lots and they were streaming the funeral from inside the church out to the streets. It was really wild, but I bet we did anywhere from 50 to 60 funerals in late 2020 and in early 2021 until the restrictions relaxed a little bit. So we had funeral homes. We probably have three or four customers that actually own these, as a result of Covid, and they continue to use them for different settings in the church and funeral space. That would be the one that comes to mind, honestly, is that kind of the most bizarre one that you never really think about? Yeah. How many units do you have out there, roughly? Tod Puetz: Yeah, so we shipped the first unit in January of 2017 to a gasoline company in Texas. By the end of this month, the end of April, we delivered right around 495 units into the marketplace all around the US. We've got some army bases and navy bases over in Japan. We've got a handful of units over in Europe, a good chunk over in Hawaii, obviously I know that's US, but largely, 95 to 97% of what we've got is here in the lower 48. We do have a few up in your neck of the woods as well, but, yeah, we've been very to lead the charge there as it relates to the go to product in the marketplace. Super interesting. Daily Dose of Hope March 10, 2025 Day 2 of Week 50 Scripture: Malachi 1-4; Psalm 2 ; Revelation 9 Welcome back, everyone, to the Daily Dose of Hope. This is the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church Bible reading plan. For our Old Testament reading, we are reading the book of Malachi, all four chapters. Malachi is the very last book of the Old Testament, a really short book, yet it gets its point across. Malachi is the Cliff Notes of the Old Testament. In these four short chapters, the author gives a brief summary of the whole Old Testament. One of it's most famous verses, Malachi 3:7, in one verse, gives us a picture of the dynamics of the Old Testament. God is basically saying, “Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” Your ancestors turned away from me, you have turned away from me. It's time to come back and let me bless you, let me love you, says the Lord. That's basically the whole Old Testament in a nutshell---keep in mind over and over again throughout the Old Testament (over hundreds of years), God's people would commit to following God and then fall away. Eventually, they were so rebellious that God lifts his hand of protection and allows the people of Israel and Judah to be conquered by other nations. We've read through all of that. Malachi prophesied about 100 years after the Jews returned from exile in Babylon (400-450BC) As we learned in Nehemiah, only a small portion of people returned to Jerusalem. They rebuilt the city, the temple, and the wall around the city. Yet, after living in exile for 70 years, the people were still corrupted by the pagan culture in which they lived. They were far from God. So, as we read over the past few weeks, Ezra and Nehemiah both had instituted reforms, the people had sincerely agreed to follow God. But within a generation, all the reforms, the promises the people had made were forgotten. What's interesting is that the people were still going through the motions. They were externally religious–they went through the religious tasks that they were supposed to do but it was ALL about outward behavior. This is the period of time in which the Pharisees & Saducees came into being---there was this emphasis on outward religiosity, doing things which make it seem like you are a good religious person. But their hearts were far from God. And we know, what matters to God is not what's on the outside, it's not our religious busyness, but it's our heart. Basically, the people are in no better place than before the exile. No matter how religious the people appear to be, their hearts are not right with God. They have allowed the things of the world, their own selfishness, their own distrust, to lead them a drift, seeking fulfillment in anything BUT God. Thus, God will do a new thing. As we read through chapters 3 and 4, we begin to see Malachi point to something that is to come. No rules or reforms will change the hearts of the people. Rules and reforms don't change our hearts. We don't need external changes. Rather, we need someone who will come into our own hearts and transform us from the inside out. We need a Savior, someone to draw us back to God and back to one another. We need Jesus. Malachi 3:1-2,“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty. But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap. After the book of Malachi ends, 400 years pass before the people get another word from God. 400 years! These were called the silent years. But then, in God's perfect timing, God arrives on the scene in a new way, through the person of Jesus Christ AND Jesus picks up right where Malachi left off. In fact, Jesus' very first message to the people in Mark 1 was to “Repent.” Repent, the kingdom of God is here. Yes, your hearts aren't right with God. Yes, I know you are selfish, self-absorbed, distracted by the ways of the world, I know your heart through and through. Turn away from your ways and come back to me. Allow me to cleanse you, be the refining fire, to purge out all the impurities, all that's harmful, all that's led you astray. Let's take a look at Revelation 9. Things are beginning to get kind of hard. Let's do our best to unpack it. The fifth trumpet blows and a star falls from the sky. The star unlocks the key to the abyss. When the abyss is opened, all kinds of evil things come out of it. The people without the seal of God are forced to go through five months of torture at the hands of the scorpion-like locusts who have come from the abyss (five months is the life cycle of a locus). It's all very graphic and hard to take in. A wider look at the battlefield reveals that the one who rules over these terrible demonic creatures is the king of the abyss, Apollyon. There is a lot of symbolism here that John's original listeners would have understood. The Greek name Apollyon means destroyer. It's very similar to the name Apollos, the Greek god who was the favorite of the emperor of the time, Domitian (who reigned from A.D. 81 to 96).In fact, the emperor so identified with Apollos that he often called himself the reincarnation of the deity. Domitian was known for his reign of terror against both Jews and Christians. Just imagine, the original hearers of this text would have drawn immediate connections between the king of this abyss and their emperor, who was persecuting them relentlessly for their belief in Jesus. They would understand that while Domitian may be the source of persecution, the true source of suffering was Satan, the evil one, the one who reigns over the abyss. Just when we think it might be over, the author says that it isn't. The first woe has passed but there are more to come. Then ensues a wave of plagues. A third of humanity is killed and then another third. You would think this would be enough to scare the survivors into believing in Jesus. And yet, the Scripture says that they continue to be hardened. They don't stop their evil behavior but persist in resisting God. Fear and terror have never been effective methods for leading people to a saving relationship with Jesus. That begs the question–how do we effectively point people to Jesus? People are not frightened into the Kingdom (we are stubborn people!), people are not shamed into the Kingdom, lectured into the Kingdom, or forced into the Kingdom in any way. People are loved into the Kingdom. And even then, they have the choice to say yes or no to God's free gift of grace. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

The two men orchestrated the Outfit's expansion into Las Vegas, using Teamsters pension loans and alliances with Meyer Lansky to finance casinos like The Stardust, Desert Inn, and Riviera — creating a multimillion-dollar pipeline of skimmed cash that flowed directly into Chicago's coffers for decades.Despite his low profile, Ricca remained a prime target for law enforcement. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he fought off tax evasion charges, perjury indictments, and a relentless deportation campaign that sought to return him to Italy — where he had been convicted of two murders in his youth. His decade-long legal battle to avoid deportation became one of the longest-running immigration cases in American history, with Ricca outmaneuvering authorities at every turn.As law enforcement pressure mounted, Ricca and Accardo made the strategic decision to promote Sam "Momo" Giancana as front boss of the Chicago Outfit in the mid-1950s — allowing the brash and flashy Giancana to become the lightning rod for law enforcement while Ricca and Accardo continued pulling the strings from the shadows. But Giancana's high-profile lifestyle, affairs with celebrities, and erratic leadership style caused turmoil within the Outfit. By the mid-1960s, Ricca and Accardo had seen enough, orchestrating Giancana's ouster and restoring order to the organization.During this era, Ricca rubbed shoulders with and mentored some of the Outfit's most notorious figures, including Murray Humphreys, Gus Alex, Ralph Pierce, Sam Battaglia, Willie Daddano, and Felix "Milwaukee Phil" Alderisio. Call it our Cliff Notes edition. Moses summarizes the Law. And then Jesus summarizes the Gospels. They give us the One Thing that grounds us and around which we are to revolve. I'm here with Mr. Phoenix Shooting Bags himself, Anthony Stallone. He's prepping for an upcoming hunt that I'm unfortunately not attending, but he runs through his plans and what he's got on deck. Anthony drew a strip tag for archery hunting deer in AZ, which is pretty much the golden goose. Then, we dive into the Cliff Notes version of my latest bear hunt. Some pretty scary stuff happened on the hunt, including a frantic call my wife made to Anthony, and I recap it all here. I drew a tag in San Carlos and talked about the process and the tribal guide service I used for hunting on the reservation. There was something really eerie about the area, and we were super far from civilization. Although it was stressful and challenging at times, the hunt was also full of a lot of cool experiences. We wrap up our conversation with a little chat about my gripes with social media and keyboard warriors. It's always a few people who ruin it for everyone. I almost didn't post this episode because of the criticism I received but I realized that a lot gets lost in translation of a caption so maybe after a few people hear the story they will have a little more compassion for the situation. I felt terrible for my mistakes and is the main reason I put myself on blast when I posted about it. Either way I made the decision to share the episode.
