We were thrilled to talk with author Eowyn Ivey about her new book, BLACK WOODS BLUE SKY. During our conversation, Eowyn shared her writing habits, including a description of her writing cottage, and tells us about her reading life. Topics ranged from motherhood on the page and in real life, her family's literary life in Alaska, and Proust vs Joyce. In our own reading lives, we both read and discuss “The North Mail” by Amelia B. Edwards from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: from Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We gave this one four paws up. Or should it be eight paws? Whatever the rating system should be for cougars, we both enjoyed Edwards's story. It has a good creep factor and atmosphere, both indoors and outside. Other books we've enjoyed include novels HAPPY LAND by Dolan Perkins-Valdez and THE GRIFFIN SISTERS GREATEST HITS by Jennifer Weiner; a quartet of novellas, OLD NEW YORK by Edith Wharton; and two works of nonfiction: STORYWORTHY: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling by Matthew Dicks and DEEP WORK: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport. Big thanks to this episode's sponsor, James Crews and Brad Peacock. The new poetry collection they co-edited is available on May 6: LOVE IS FOR ALL OF US: Poems of Tenderness and Belonging from the LGBTQ+ Community and Friends (with illustrations by Lisa Congdon). We also recap a great Biblio Adventure to the Mark Twain House to hear Ethan Rutherford (author of NORTH SUN, OR THE VOYAGE OF THE WHALESHIP ESTHER) in conversation with Amity Gaige about her new novel, HEARTWOOD. Chris also got to attend THE MOUNT'S virtual book club discussion of Edith Wharton's A SON AT THE FRONT and Willa Cather's ONE OF OURS, led by Anne Schuyler and Julie Olin-Ammentorp. As always, there are more books inside this episode than we can fit here! Enjoy, and be sure not to miss our conversation with Eowyn Ivey at the end. Oh, and reminder: our second quarter readalong pick is THE GOOD HOUSE by Tananarive Due (Zoom discussion on 6/8 and also on Goodreads). A random share on Twitter turned viral and catapulted Venessa to the core of fandom love. Much of Venessa's artwork is driven by the desire to get books she loves in front of a larger audience. She has always worked to support BIPOC and LGBTQ authors and help raise awareness for their work. Venessa's art is mostly digital art because it's fast and doesn't take a lot of expensive resources but she begins with pencil and paper sketches. Eventually, it became impossible to have a day job and make art professionally. She chose her own graphic novel and we're all so glad she did. Be the ladder - Venessa loves helping other artists to value themselves and fight for their fair share, especially in the face of AI art. We love Venessa's approach to “failure” She believes in a “Bless your mistakes” approach to life. In the episode, we talk about emotional deficit - what it is and how to deal with it. There is NO wasted time - ever. All of Venessa's past experiences are showing up in her own work and she's wildly grateful for all of her experiences. It wasn't until Venessa was in her 30s that she began to untangle her identity and embrace her Queer identity. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, Masie & Stuart return to the aisles of 2000's feminine cinema with the 2005 film adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's sibling drama novel In Her Shoes. Perusing the film's selection of pairs, our hosts discover a shockingly compelling family melodrama that thoughtfully tackles themes of mental illness and generational trauma in a way uncommon for other films of its era. Listen as our hosts discuss the film's compelling central sibling relationship as well as its weird 2000's beauty standards and portrayal of Toni Collette's character. Welcome to the first podcast from PAW's new Book Club, where Princeton alumni read a book together and send PAW their questions for the author. We received some terrific questions for our very first author, Jennifer Weiner, Class of '91, about her latest novel, “The Breakaway.” Jennifer is a prolific writer and frequent topper of bestseller lists. “The Breakaway” hit shelves this summer, and it impressed us at PAW by pulling readers breezily into a story about a bicycling trip led by protagonist Abby Stern, and then layering in thought-provoking and, frankly, controversial themes. PAW Book Club is proud to be sponsored by the Princeton University Store. Missed this read? Join us for the next one, Michael Lewis '82's latest book, “Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon.” Sign up at bit.ly/paw-book-club.
Please welcome to the podcast the hilariously entertaining and #1 best-selling author of In Her Shoes, Mrs. Everything, and The Summer Place, Jennifer Weiner! This is one juicy episode of literary gossip with so many laugh-out-loud moments. Jen takes us through her two decades in the book business, from her debut Good in Bed to her latest, The Breakaway. We dive into mothers and daughters, biking and "yogging," commercial fiction vs. literary fiction, as well as tall tales from Elin and Jen's old flings, worst book tour stories, and their least and most favorite parts of their job as writers. *Warning, the three get carried away and this episode has some explicit language that could offend listeners.A special thank you to our Episode Sponsors:Nantucket Looms - limited time, 15% off with code BOOKS15Bar YoshiRead With JennaJennifer Weiner Reading List:Good in Bed by Jennifer WeinerIn Her Shoes by Jennifer WeinerMrs. Everything by Jennifer WeinerThe Breakaway by Jennifer WeinerWhat else are we reading in this episode:Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie GarmusWhere the Crawdads Sing by Delia OwensSwan Song by Elin HilderbrandFollow/Subscribe to the 'Books, Beach, & Beyond' podcast now to stay current on new episodes. And find us on Instagram at @booksbeachandbeyondHappy Reading!
Hank Williams Jr. gets married in his mother's hometown of Banks, Alabama. We share the latest on Bocephus' nuptials with Brandi. "Toccopola Storyteller" Jerry Short details his Facebook usage and run-ins with Mr. Zuckerberg's company. The U.S. already has endured 23 severe weather events in 2023, an all-time high. We reminisce on the 1990s "Dirty Bird" Atlanta Falcons teams. And, Louisiana-born novelist Jennifer Weiner's new book, "The Breakaway," is No. 5 on the New York Times' best-sellers list for fiction.
Abby Stern is very much looking forward to leading a biking trip from NYC to Niagara Falls – until her mom, an old one-night-stand, and some uneasy memories are added to the mix. In Jennifer Weiner's new novel, The Breakaway, that two-week trip becomes filled with tension: sexual, political, and familial. Weiner tells NPR's Juana Summers how different women manage their mothers' expectations, and how she learned to see "almond moms" quite differently while writing this novel.
Jennifer Weiner is the no. 1 New York Times bestselling author of more than a dozen ''funny, fanciful, extremely poignant'' (The Boston Globe) novels, including That Summer, Mrs. Everything, Who Do You Love, All Fall Down, In Her Shoes, and Good in Bed. She is also the writer of two young adult books about a tiny Bigfoot and an essay collection titled Hungry Heart, an intimate and honest meditation on yearning, fulfillment, and her many identities. Her other work has been published in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, among other publications. In The Breakaway, Weiner tells the story of Abby Stern, a woman who finds empowerment during a group bike trip from New York City to Niagara Falls. A Book Cougars first: we interview a writing duo! In our Author Spotlight segment, we talk with Alli Frank and Asha Youmans about their new novel THE BETTER HALF, how they started writing together, their path to publication, and their writing process. Spoiler: matching pajamas! Some episode highlights: We both read Ann Petry's powerful 1946 novel, THE STREET, for the Vintage Book Club (hosted by Book Club on the Go at Red Heat Tavern in South Windsor). This story about a struggling single mother in 1940s Harlem seems as relevant as ever and generated great discussion. We recommend the audio version narrated by Danielle Deadwyler. Emily read a novel about two women friends by Edgar Award-winning novelist Erin Flanagan. If you like twisty and dark stories about people who are not what they seem, COME WITH ME (out 8/22) is for you. She also enjoyed Jennifer Weiner's forthcoming beach read, THE BREAKAWAY (out 8/29), about a fat-positive protagonist who leads a bike tour. Emily also crossed off another square on her Scarlet Summer Bingo Card by reading/listening to WE RIDE UPON THE STICKS by Quan Barry, a story set in Danvers, MA with lots of 1980s love. Chris ripped through Laura Sims' new novel, HOW CAN I HELP YOU, a psychological mystery/thriller/suspense novel set in a small town library that revolves around two women who become obsessed with one another for very different reasons. Teaser: there's more than a nod to Shirley Jackson. And while waiting out a thunderstorm at the Acton Public Library in Old Saybrook, Chris read WHAT DID IT TAKE? a short biography by Whitney McKendree Moore about Anna Louise James. James, a fascinating woman in her own right, was Ann Petry's aunt. We recap our Biblio Adventure at the Grolier Club in NYC where we did some archival research (Emily is hooked!) and also had a browse at McNally Jackson Books at Rockefeller Center. On Wednesday, August 2nd, we're heading to Porter Square Books in Cambridge, MA to see Laura Sims and Paul Tremblay in conversation. Come join us!
Indy reviews Summer of Soul, the documentary by Questlove that recounts the influential but largely forgotten 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, Samantha suggests Jennifer Weiner's That Summer as your next summer beach read, and then we preview next week's big watch: The Talented Mr. Ripley! Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a 2021 American independent documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in his directorial debut.[5] It had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories. It had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. by Searchlight Pictures on June 25, 2021, before expanding and being released for streaming on Hulu the next weekend. That Summer by Jennifer Weiner: Daisy Shoemaker can't sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful; her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she's got it good. So why is she up all night? I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

When Jamie Nabozny reached middle school, several of his classmates began bullying him for being gay. They called him names. They spat on him. They tripped him in the halls. Jamie and his parents asked Ashland Middle School Principal Mary Podlesny to discipline Jamie's tormentors, but she didn't do shit. Naturally, the bullies became emboldened. When Jamie went to high school, the bullying and harassment worsened. He endured verbal and physical attacks. Once again, Jamie and his parents went through the proper channels. They met with Ashland High School Principal William Davis and Assistant Principal Thomas Blauert to ask that they hold the bullies accountable. They didn't do shit, either. Nothing moved the administrators to action – not when Jamie was assaulted, not when he was beaten to the point of needing hospitalization, and not even the multiple times he attempted to die by suicide. Years later, after Jamie had time to reflect on what he'd endured, he decided to sue. Then Brandi tells us about a double murder that shocked the community of Napa, California. On the evening of October 31, 2004, three roommates were at home, settling into bed. The young women were all in their 20s, and all active in their careers. Lauren Meanza was a volleyball coach. Adriane Insogna was a civil engineer. Leslie Mazzara worked in public relations. That night, a man broke into the little home the three women shared. He climbed the stairs and attacked Adriane and Leslie. Lauren, whose room was on the first floor, managed to escape. She hid in the backyard and watched the man escape. In the darkness, she couldn't be sure who he was. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. “The Liz Taylor Ring is a gorgeously written multigenerational novel, tracing the path of a diamond ring across decades, through the ups and down in the lives of one family. Brenda Janowitz beautifully weaves stories of love, of motherhood, and of the unbreakable bonds between siblings. I absolutely devoured this dazzling book!” - Jillian Cantor, USA Today bestselling author of Beautiful Little Fools Picked as one of the “must read” picks for 2022 by everyone from Town and Country magazine to Katie Couric Media, Brenda's latest amusing romp is part love story, part family saga. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and today on Binge Reading Brenda talks about building a mystery and a family story across generations, built around a famous memento like the ring Richard Burton bought Elizabeth Taylor, or Grace Kelly's wedding dress. Introducing author Brenda Janowitz Jenny Wheeler: Welcome to the show, Brenda. It's fantastic to have you with us. Author Brenda Janowitz Brenda Janowitz: Thank you so much for having me. I'm thrilled to be here. Jenny Wheeler: Your latest book, The Liz Taylor Ring, has got a wonderful title for starters, but it's your seventh novel and it's received a great series of accolades. It's been welcomed by many publications people would listen to. It was one of Town and Country's best books for February, the Katie Couric people thought it was one of the best books of 2022 and Pop Sugar's most anticipated reads of 2022. Did that give you a bit of a lift to start? Brenda Janowitz: My goodness yes. It was so incredibly exciting. Certainly by book seven, you think you'd be used to it and everything would be old hat, but it feels like with every book you're starting fresh and you're starting over, so it's always a miracle when anyone likes your book. It feels like, okay, it's not terrible. We've got something here. Jenny Wheeler: I know you've had a lot of success in the past, but would you consider that this was almost a breakthrough book for you? Is it that good? Brenda Janowitz: I do think each book is reaching a little higher for me. The Grace Kelly Dress was a breakout for me because I was on one path and The Grace Kelly Dress put me out there a little more. Certainly with the follow up being The Liz Taylor Ring,

“I was thinking about caretaking. And I was thinking about mothers because I lost my mom last year, but just the places that feel familiar and how they almost become characters in our heads. Like when I think about the house where I grew up, and I can remember it so specifically right down to the way like the closet smelled or when I think about all the time I spent in Cape Cod, the way the sand on the beach feels at low tide or the way the wind sounds when it's late at night.” Bestselling author Jennifer Weiner (Mrs. Everything and That Summer, among others) joins us on the show to take us behind the scenes of her newest novel, The Summer Place, and talk about love and loss, family and home, motherhood, money and much more with B&N's Marie Cummings. A big welcome back to JESS MONTGOMERY! We have a lovely chat about the new entry in her Kinship Series, THE ECHOES: A Novel. Emily and Chris are both currently reading DEATH ON THE NILE by Agatha Christie for a buddy read with Our Mystery Man, John Valeri. Stayed tuned for our conversation with John about the novel and the new movie adaptation coming up on episode 155. The big news in our lives is that we FINALLY got to head back to Manhattan for some BIBLIO-ADVENTURING with Aunt Ellen! It was so good to be back in the city that we love after a two-year pandemic-induced separation. We got our library cards renewed at the NYPL, walked to the Morgan Library & Museum to see their GWENDOLYN BROOKS exhibit, walked through Central Park for lunch, and then on to the NY Historical Society Museum & Library to see their exhibit, PICTURE THE DREAM: THE STORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THROUGH CHILDREN'S BOOKS. A bonus surprise was walking through the ROBERT CARO exhibit showcasing his writing process. After that, we walked some more to check out a new-to-us bookstore, WESTSIDER RARE & USED BOOKS. What a day! In our Just Read segment, Emily talks about HUNGRY HEART: ADVENTURES IN LIFE, LOVE, AND WRITING by Jennifer Weiner, PEARL by Tabitha King, and TRUE BIZ by Sara Nović. Chris read THE CHILDREN ON THE HILL by Jennifer McMahon, and three picture books: I AM AN AMERICAN: THE WONG KIM ARK STORY by Martha Brockenbrough, Grace Lin, and Julia Kuo; OSNAT AND HER DOVE: THE TRUE STORY OF THE WORLD'S FIRST FEMALE RABBI by Sigal Samuel and Vali Mintzi; WE ARE STILL HERE: NATIVE AMERICAN TRUTHS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW by Traci Sorell and Frane Lessac. We also buddy read MAUD MARTHA by Gwendolyn Brooks, a novel we both highly recommend if you can find it! It is out of print but there is a new edition coming out in the UK in early May.
Abby Jimenez just may be the most interesting woman in the world! She's competed on the Food Network, is the owner of Nadia Cakes, a bakery that ships all across the country, and is a bestselling author (not to mention mom to pets who are very popular on social media.) She joins the podcast to talk about her new novel “Part of Your World,” which she describes as an “age gap, social gap romance” about Alexis Montgomery and Daniel Grant, a doctor and carpenter who meet-cute when she's driving through town and her car gets stuck in the mud. Abby shares specific advice with Olivia for aspiring novelists, talks about her bakery business, and shares which network offer to adapt this book for screen that she's already turned down. A Moment With Margaret: Beach reads that are top of the TBR for Margaret include Emily Giffin's “Meant To Be,” (May 31) and “A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons” (June 7) by Kate Khavari. Olivia and Margaret discuss enjoying Jennifer Weiner's new book, “The Summer Place” (May 10).
Emily and Chris were honored to have the opportunity to talk with author Amy Bloom about her new memoir, IN LOVE: A Memoir of Love and Loss about Amy and her husband Brian Ameche's love and his decision to end his life after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Both Book Cougars are captivated by this beautifully written memoir about love, the agony of dealing with Alzheimer's, and choosing to end one's life in a society that has no viable options. We are currently doing a buddy read of MAUD MARTHA by Gwendolyn Brooks. We also have an upcoming buddy read in the works with Our Mystery Man, John Valeri. The three of us will discuss DEATH ON THE NILE by Agatha Christie and the new Kenneth Branagh movie adaptation. If you'd like to join us in either of these buddy reads, we have discussion threads on our Goodreads group page. Reminder that our next readalong is TWO OLD WOMEN: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival by Velma Wallis.
