Here's my interview with Keiichi Matsuda, Designer and Director of Liquid City, that was conducted on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, CA. In the introduction, I read through Matsuda's essay titled "Gods" (also uploaded here) where he explores the idea that AI should be more like pets and polytheistic and animistic familiars rather than the more monotheistic approach where there's one true AI God represented by one of Big Tech's omniscient and all-powerful AI systems. This approach has lead Matsuda to developing a system of what he calls "parabrains" that is an interface for AI agents that goes beyond the narrative scripting capabilities that he was exploring in inworld.ai with his project MeetWol that I covered previously at AWE 2023. A lot of Matsuda's ideas were also explored in the speculative fiction short film called Agents that was produced in collaboration with what was a the time Niantic Labs and is now Niantic Spatial (check out my interview with Niantic Spatial at AWE 2025 for more on how they're using Matsuda's Parabrains system). And you can also see more context in the rough transcript below. This is episode #41 of 41 of my AWE Past and Present series totaling 24.5 hours. Ariel Emerald is a VR filmmaker who has had a short film titled Ulterior Motives and music video screen titled Like Crazy at Raindance Immersive for the past two years. Before getting into social VR, she suffered from social anxiety and isolation, and didn't have the resources to pursue a career in film. But getting into virtual reality via VRChat allowed her to overcome social anxiety, discover the virtual clubbing scene, cultivate a friendship network, develop her cinematography and color grading skills, write and direct a range of different fiction and non-fiction pieces shot within VR, and and bring the community of VR filmmakers together with the Filmmakers of VRChat Discord. I had a chance to catch up Ariel to talk about her journey into VR by overcoming social anxiety, and the latest in her pursuit of a career in filmmaking via VR. We also cover some of the history of filmmaking in VR starting with VRChat user hirabiki's VRCLens that had a VRCLens Sample world that first launched on August 25, 2020 and was initially available on Booth, but now is exclusively available on Gumroad. We cover other turning points like Metacosm Studios, Joe Hunting's on “We Met in Virtual Reality" premiere at Sundance on January 21, 2022, VRCon Film Fest 2022 on December 17, 2022, Phia Bunny's The Virtual Reality Show Film Fest on February 25, 2023, the founding of the Filmmakers of VRChat community and Discord soon afterwards, and then a selection of films shot in VR at both Raindance Immersive 2023 and Raindance Immersive 2024. Filmmaking in VR is still in it's very early phases in exploring non-fiction and documentary forms, replicating existing fiction genres, and then eventually pushing forward new genres of storytelling that will be made possible by the affordances of VR, breaking down geographic access to performers around the world, and having thousands and eventually millions of easily accessible virtual film sets on social VR platforms like VRChat. It's very exciting to see where it'll all go. Ariel Emerald's gives me a glimpse of what's possible when all of these virtual and human resources come together within VR to push at these edges of genre, cultivation of moods and feelings with virtual architecture, and explore new possibilities in storytelling. ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 12 Episode 14 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week's episode is all about using virtual reality to enhance tennis training and recovery. Yannick Yoshizawa and Nick Monroe are tennis veterans. From playing junior and college tennis to coaching, they have seen the sport change and develop over the years. One thing was missing, though - finding a way to use virtual reality (VR) technology effectively to help tennis athletes reach their full potential. So Yannick and his team of developers created Sense Arena, enlisting the expertise and guidance of coaches like Nick and players like Jennifer Brady to ensure a positive and beneficial user experience. Sense Arena's groundbreaking technology provides tennis players of all ages and abilities with enhanced visualization, allowing them to improve the mental aspects of their game such as anticipation and decision-making skills. Using VR goggles and a haptic racquet, players can train their body and brain in a small space (12'x12' or larger), giving them more opportunities to get in their reps even when court costs, weather, or injury hamper traditional on-court play. Juniors can even customize their virtual environment and train in different weather conditions including bright sun and wind. They can choose Hard Court, Grass, or Clay as the training surface to mimic the various bounces and help their eyes track the ball more effectively. The price of this amazing tech is very reasonable. After a 10-day free trial, you can choose a monthly or annual (discounted) plan that won't bust the family tennis budget. For more information, be sure to visit the Sense Arena website at https://tennis.sensearena.com/. If you have questions, you can reach out to the support department at support@sensearena.com. In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Agnieszka Sekula joins to discuss her research into the applications of virtual reality in psychedelic-assisted therapy. Agnieszka is a researcher at Swinburne University and co-founder of Enosis Therapeutics. Her research focuses on investigating therapeutic mechanisms in psychedelic treatment that can be strengthened through experience design and translating findings of this research into real-life applications by developing virtual reality scenarios. Additionally, she has recently conducted the first ever case study of VR and psychedelics. In her research, Agnieszka considers many possible uses of virtual reality in the context of psychedelic therapy, as well as potential dangers. The first application she discusses is using VR to promote relaxation prior to a psychedelic journey. Similar to the synergy between psychedelics and meditation, Agnieszka suggests that the immersive experience of VR could be useful in promoting states of calmness which are ideal for a person about to enter into a psychedelic experience. Additionally, she suggests that the otherworldly imagery and soundscapes possible with VR technology can help prime a client for the shifts and intensifications of perception caused by psychedelics. Having the opportunity to explore these states prior to the experience helps the patient to feel more prepared for the experiences, especially since with VR these explorations occur in a context where one maintains a connection with sober consciousness and can easily opt out if things become overstimulating. Next Agnieszka discusses the potential of augmenting peak psychedelic experiences with VR. Considering both psychedelics and virtual reality have the potential to occasion dramatic shifts in consciousness and affect, pairing these together is likely to be synergistic in promoting mystical experiences in the therapeutic process—something which appears to be closely tied to the efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy. Though little research currently exists in this area, Agnieszka believes that VR may have the potential to more reliably facilitate experiences of ego dissolution and deep awe during the psychedelic journey. Perhaps one of the most novel proposals in Agnieszka's research is using VR to facilitate greater recollection of the psychedelic journey in order to promote more effective integration. She proposes that by building models of the psychedelic experience in the VR space, a patient can more readily return to the experience in sober consciousness by encountering these same stimuli again in virtual reality. The immersive experience of virtual reality may help facilitate access to feelings, memories, and intuitions which arose during the psychedelic session, leading to an easier process of integration. However, Agnieszka's research also considers potential dangers in combining VR and psychedelics. These include the risk of overstimulation and the potential of a trauma being triggered by certain imagery or auditory input. More mundanely, there is also the possibility of “cyber-sickness” and physical discomfort caused by the VR headset. Despite these potential drawbacks, however, Agnieszka is confident there are powerful applications of VR in psychedelic therapy, particularly in allowing for a more holistic and integrated approach to the altered states of consciousness theorized to be at the center of the efficacy of these new treatments. In this episode: Using VR to induce relaxation in preparation for psychedelic journeys Augmenting peak psychedelic experiences with VR VR as a technology which may promote therapeutic alliance Using VR to store memories of psychedelic experiences to facilitate integration Transitioning between normal consciousness and altered states with the help of VR VR as a “digital diazepam” for decreasing the intensity of a psychedelic experience without pharmacological intervention The potential dangers of overstimulation or triggering traumas with VR and psychedelics Quotes: “VR in itself is just a tool—it's a method of delivery—but in itself it's not the active ingredient. So whenever we speak of VR we think about the way of delivering the content, and the content is that active ingredient.” [2:22] “The best way to prepare someone for what an altered state experience feels like is by actually experiencing an altered state, and here again VR can be very helpful in approximating… what that psychedelic experience might feel like.” [18:51] “VR is used as a multi-sensory canvas where the patient is building the model of their psychedelic experience so that they can store it for themselves and return to it later.” [28:17] “Using VR just as beautiful content, or… contextual design for the entire experience might not be beneficial because it might work more as a distraction than as something that supports the journey.” [49:15] “For me the most important thing is to start looking at psychedelic treatment as an experience in its totality and to look a little bit more deeply into design principles that could be used to maximize that experience of the patient, of the client.” [53:46] Links: “Virtual Reality as a Moderator of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy” Enosis Therapeutics website Agnieszka on LinkedIn Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
Bob Tetiva, CEO of SenseArena, Prague, Czech Republic, headquartered Sportstech start-up, and Yannick Yoshizawa, VP for tennis, spoke to Rudolf Falat, founder of the Voice of FinTech podcast, about their VR training tool for tennis and ice-hockey and how it helps professionals and amateurs to get an additional edge. Here is what they talked about: Bob, Yannick – what are your backgrounds? How did you get to be at a juncture of sports and technology? SenseArena started with VR tools for ice hockey and now tennis. What's the problem you are solving? How does it work? Is the focus on physical, technical, or mental improvement? Many sports, including tennis, are increasingly competitive, and players are looking for an additional edge to boost their chances of success. Even though it's an individual sport, tennis players now travel with teams, often including psychologists or mental coaches. How does your tool differ from what human coaches or team members can offer? How do you differ from other analytical tools (racket sensors, video tracking)? While digital transformation and VR or metaverse received a boost during the pandemic, wouldn't you be afraid that enthusiasm for VR can fade as the restrictions are being relaxed and people can practice on the court? Is your solution meant for professionals or amateurs, or both? I understand that a US pro, Jennifer Brady, tried your tool and explained that it's not a game. Conversely, could an amateur use it in a game like virtual tennis on Meta / Oculus? VR headsets are getting better but are still quite heavy. How long can you train with Sense Arena's tool? Tennis coaches sometimes widely disagree about how their players should play – for example, Richard Williams advocated for an open stance with his daughter's coaches. Can you customize your approach using your tool, or do you drive towards a single viewpoint? The prize money has been steadily rising in tennis and endorsements. Still, even as prize money distribution has improved a little to benefit lower-ranked players, it's a costly sport. What is your business model – how do you make money? What is the best way to reach out and learn about SenseArena? Website: SenseArena, and LinkedIn: Bob Tetiva and Yannick Yoshizawa
