New Netherland gets off to a rocky start, with uncommonly poor leadership. Fortunately, a very capable leader, Peter Minuit, steps forward after a catastrophic attack on the Dutch at Fort Orange by the Mowhawk. Minuit would consolidate most of the settlers at New Amsterdam, and buy Manhattan from the Leni Lenape Indians on the island. Notwithstanding its representation in American lore, we fearlessly consider whether that deal was, in fact, a great bargain for the Dutch, or actually at fair market value! Mowhawk author and performer E. Pauline Johnson made The Legend of the Qu'Appelle Valley one of Saskatchewan's most popular folktales, but it's not the only story about "The River That Calls." Learn about the history of the legend, the theories on what made Johnson's version so popular, and the legacy that has made it somewhat controversial today. Then listen to a more modern tale inspired by the various elements of this iconic legend. Note: This episode discusses and quotes some antiquated and racist ideas and language in order to provide some context and aid in understanding its history. Discretion is advised.

This episode ended up taking me on an unexpected journey. When I started out, the plan was simply to tell the story of the Six Nations First Nation near Brantford, Ontario applying for membership in the League of Nations in 1923, and the underhanded ways in which the government of Canada, and especially Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs Duncan Campbell Scott, opposed and punished them for their application. But when I finished that part of the recording, the episode seemed incomplete, and as I sat at my desk, staring at my bookcase and wondering what I might do to turn the tale into more than a mere historical lecture, the name Beth Brant and the title of her first collection, Mohawk Trail, kept tugging at me, as did the fact that Scott was not merely a bureaucrat but also a highly regarded poet in his time. Would a comparison of texts be a useful way to bring the story more fully to life? Maybe, but how much better would it be if there were a family connection between Beth Brant and the Mowhawk war chief who, with his sister, established the Six Nations First Nation and after whom the city of Brantford is named? Well, it turns out there is. So it turns out that I was able to explore the questions at the heart of this episode not merely from a bureaucratic and historical perspective but also from the deeply human perspective of literature, and to do so through the work of the arch villain of the story, himself, on the one hand, and a bearer of the protagonists' heritage on the other. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you find it as enlightening to listen to as I found it to make.
This week's episode starts off a bit different! I was off camping, and we didn't film a full podcast before I left, so Camille filled in for us! You can find her all over social media at Meeler Husky, and that includes YouTube, and Instagram, so be sure to check her out! So the first part of this podcast is us learning a bit more about Camille!Dan and Camille talk about the anniversary of the birth of his Mowhawk! And then we flashback to 2009 to talk about all the things that were popular back then. Then the talk about Fall Fests start! Does California have Fall Fests? I guess we will find out soon enough!Did you hear about the near miss asteroid that flew by the Earth? And then I call into the show! I called in from the campground we were staying at! I was able to call in and do a little update on where we were in our trip!Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ccmousepodcast/Instagram: https://instagram.com/ccmousepodcastYouTube: http://www.youtube.com/ccmousepodcast Send us a Voice Message!https://www.speakpipe.com/CCMousePodcast Show Hosts Info: Meeler HuskyInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/MeelerHuskyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/MeelerLiteRFSDanInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/RFSDanYouTube: http://www.youtube.com/RFSDan Jess from Snow Dogs VlogsInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/SnowDogsVlogsYouTube: http://www.youtube.com/SnowDogsVlogs

Jimmy Tebeau is a professional musician performing in the nationally touring, festival promoting Grateful Dead Experience: The Schwag. Jimmy also had a four year stint as the bassist for the JGB (Jerry Garcia Band). Recently, he started hosting a two hour talk show on KKID 92.9 in Rolla, Missouri. In this free flowing and unedited episode of the live talk show we discuss: Joseph Campbell and his relationship with the Grateful Dead tribal culture, Jimmy's own experiences with group consciousness and/or non-local consciousness at Grateful Dead and his own performances, Schwagstock (the upcoming Missouri Music Festival), Rainbow Gatherings, Jimmy's interesting tour with the Jerry Garcia Band in Hawaii, poly-rhythms and altered consciousness in drum circles, Timothy Leary, FDA trials for Psilocybin and MDMA and much more. Jimmy also performs live his version of Dylan's "Desolation Row" and we hear a recorded live performance of the Schwag's Help on the Way/Slipknot at the St. Louis Ball Park Village. Jimmy then tells bad lawyer jokes and I counter with worse ones, being more familiar with the subject. We are also joined by Andrew Sheeley of the Phelps County Focus to discuss his recent story of the geologic core sample archive in Rolla, Missouri. Jimmy and Andrew also discuss the trials and tribulations of the late local personality Chief Wanna Doobie. Later, Electronica/Dubstep artist "The Mowhawk" joins the fray to describe his upcoming time/spatial manifestations. Guiseppe also thrills the gathering with his live banjo performance. And of course, driving force behind KKID, Steve Wheeler, holds space for the entire show. The video of the entire performance will be posted here later this week: Video link of show Much much more info about the history and upcoming time/spatial manifestations of the Schwag can be found here: Schwag Portal More information about Andrew Sheeley can be found here: Sheeley Portal
