Today's guest makes me feel inspired. I welcome Lex Borrero to the program. He's the very definition of rags-to-riches. Born in Bogota, Colombia, he emigrated with his mother to the US to start a new life from scratch. His first taste of success came after selling candy and burned CD's to buy a pair of Jordans when he was a kid. But Lex wasn't (and he'll admit, still isn't) a musician. Instead, he has an innate ability to know a good story and a talent for communication. He talks about his professional arc; how he started as a young producer trying to update the sound of Christian artists. That led to one of two times he was kicked out of church! But Lex always believed in himself, even when he moved to New York City for a music internship and wound up homeless for about a year. But his persistence and altruism has paid off tenfold. He has worked with artists like Tainy, Maroon 5, and Bad Bunny. His architectural approach to building up artists and companies coupled with his drive to create has led to the success of NEON16, AM16, and NTERTAIN. That's why he has branched into TV and movies. He is the force behiind hit shows like La Firma on Netflix and The Montaners on Disney Plus. His drive is relentless! If you want to know what's up & coming in music and TV, follow Lex and his companies @lexborrero, @neon16, @am16agency, & @ntertainstudios (w/o the N) on all the socials. You can follow us @PerformanceAnx on those same socials. You can check out merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. You can slide us some coffee money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. I believe the invitation of life is to become ourselves, live fully and freely, and then, if you are a student of yoga, to extend that full, free, safe living out to all beings everywhere. But how often do we get to see someone really do that? Today I have a treat for you: a person who is doing just that. Becoming. My friend Miles Borrero (he/him) has survived fronting a Latin rock band, riding horses competitively, acting on various stages across the US, and nannying a six-year-old. He has been Catholic, Jewish, and a frequent guest at Krishna's house, and has lived life as a boy, a girl, a woman, a man, and something in between. Now a senior yoga teacher who leads retreats and trainings all over the world, Miles is passionate about dismantling the systems within ourselves that keep us small. And he has written a beautiful book called Beautiful Monster: A Becoming. The book reads like one long dharma talk, full of creative writing and yogic wisdom. In this episode you'll hear: how Miles was Rodney Yee's best student even though they never met why was it yoga teaching that really stuck for Miles, despite having so many jobs and creative endeavors what it was like for Miles to teach in his native language after learning to teach yoga in English first all about Miles' teacher Raghunath and what Miles learned from him what changed in Miles' asana practice after his top surgery and taking testosterone Learn More From Miles: Website Chant Your Way to Freedom (Course) 100 YTT with Miles Miles Book, “Beautiful Monster: A Becoming”

In June, the Florida Department of Health issued a statewide mosquito-borne illness advisory after four confirmed cases of malaria in Sarasota County. They were the first cases in the state in 20 years. Then, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 159 new cases of leprosy in the U.S. in 2020, with Florida among the top reporting states. “Some Biblical diseases started making a comeback in the state of Florida,” Florida's Fourth Estate host Matt Austin said. “Leprosy and malaria, these are two things I never thought we would be talking about again on the news.” Austin and his co-host Ginger Gadsden invited Dr. Elizabeth Borrero with Health First to discuss the diseases that still have a lot of people talking. When it comes to leprosy, Borrero said it is an old disease that has never been able to be eradicated and that most of the new cases are likely spread by people who are traveling out of the country to areas where leprosy is endemic. Borrero said that list includes Nepal, India, Brazil and Malaysia. The disease can be contracted via the nine-banded armadillo or through soil. Borrero said you likely won't catch it from someone else. “As long as the person doesn't have prolonged contact with another individual, you're OK. You're not going to acquire it immediately from somebody who has leprosy,” she said. “It's not that contagious really.” More is known about Malaria. Borrero said it is spread via infected mosquitoes and symptoms include night sweats, nausea, vomiting and headaches. “The majority of patients that come into the hospital system have a high fever — fevers of over 103 lead them to seek medical attention, which is a good thing.” Borrero also suggested travel as a way that malaria is spread. She said if you are traveling to a country where it is endemic to see a travel medicine specialist. She said the World Health Organization has done a lot to help stop the disease from spreading including a vaccine, though it is not available in the U.S. yet. A main premise of our podcast is that peace efforts are invisible in the mainstream media, or certainly not visible enough. But one place that has grabbed at least some of the world's attention, is the peace process in Colombia. In 2016, after repeated failed negotiations, the FARC guerilla organization finally signed a peace deal with the government. After fifty years of war, militants turned in their weapons and they began a process of reintegration into society. Our guest, filmmaker and Bogotá native Juan Carlos Borrero, used to run from the guerillas when filming in the Colombian countryside. Everyone he knew had a family member who had been kidnapped or killed. He never thought he'd see peace between the government and the FARC. Borrero's documentary film “A Call for Peace” tells the story of the peace process in Colombia, through interviews with peace builders who played key roles behind the scenes. Skilled negotiators from places like Northern Ireland, Israel, and El Salvador shared their experience and counsel with then-President Juan Manuel Santos. The implementation of the agreement has been rocky, with continuing violence surrounding the drug trade, and victims still waiting for reparations. In August 2022, newly elected President Gustavo Petro announced a campaign called “Total Peace.” He said he would work to follow through on the promises of the 2016 agreement, and to forge peace agreements with other militant groups. Just last week, leaders of the guerilla group ELN arrived in Bogotá, amidst negotiations – a historic show of cooperation with the government. But on the same day, President Petro's son Nicolás confessed to receiving illicit donations to his fathers' campaign. Despite setbacks, there's no doubt that the 2016 peace agreement was a significant achievement that offers hope and a new way forward for Colombians. This is the first episode in our Spotlight Colombia series, where we look at Colombia as a laboratory of peace, from the 2016 agreement to Petro's election, to today. We first recorded this interview with Juan Carlos Borrero in May 2022.
