Happy Spooky Wednesday! Thank you for celebrating our 4-year pod-iversary with us! This is our first episode with our new format, and Kala is talking all about haunted roads in Wisconsin. One of the most famous legends is that of The Phantom Hitchhiker of Hwy 12 in Baraboo. He's been seen many times by drivers late at night. No one knows who he is or why he's there. And if you see him once, you'll likely see him again just a few miles down the road. Other spooky stretches of pavement include: The Jogger and the Ghosts Cats of Jay Road The strange phenomena on Callan Road (AKA Witch Road) near Fond du Lac in Rosendale Spirits of roadkill on Paradise Road in Jefferson Old Man Weary, Spectral Cars, and other unexplained occurrences on Weary Road near Evansville This episode is sure to make you question your next Midwest road trip. This leaves us wondering why Wisconsin has so many spooky roads. Is it the only state like this, or is there more to worry about when traveling across the country?

Throwback from 2018. Mary Sweeney needs some air. “There has to be a flow of fast and slow, and a pause to allow the listener or the spectator to digest and to project their own thoughts.” She thinks I should leave more space in my podcasts, to let it breathe. She tells me this as we sit in the screened in porch behind her summer house in Madison, Wisconsin. As she tells me this, cicadas chirp loudly, as if to underscore her point: “Today's episode will not be edited! You will not remove us from this moment!” Mary Sweeney should know. She spent much of her career as a film editor, producer and writer collaborating with David Lynch. Beginning in 1985 with Blue Velvet, and continuing through the 2006 film Inland Empire, her editing credits include Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990), Twin Peaks (1991), Industrial Symphony (1991), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), On the Air (1992), Hotel Room(1993), Lost Highway (1996), The Straight Story (2000), Mulholland Drive (2001) and Baraboo (2009). The relationship with Lynch was productive, fruitful, and nuanced (the two were partners in work and in life for much of that time) and they have a son together. At the time of this interview, Mary was working as a consulting producer and writer on Matthew Weiner's series for Amazon, The Romanoffs. She is the Dino and Martha De Laurentiis Endowed Professor of film at USC, where she teaches Graduate Screenwriting Thesis and “Dreams, The Brain and Storytelling.” Before we had this conversation, Mary cheekily emailed me a list of topics that she would be happy to discuss. They included editing, producing, screenwriting, parenting, Paris, Cairo, pie baking, and the Catholic Church. Guess what we talked about? All of it. And we also talked at length about living and working in an intensely creative partnership with David Lynch for all those years (both personally and professionally), collaborating with one of the most innovative voices in film, and what's so great about coming from a big family. Visit the Patreon Page for an extra 20 minutes of juicy conversation that didn't make it into this edit. Thanks for listening. Though trespassing is prohibited, the asylum's sinister reputation lingers, attracting those brave enough to sneak a peek. Bloody Bride Bridge, Stevens Point Highway 66, Stevens Point, WI 54481 Legend has it that a bride who died tragically on this bridge still haunts it, appearing to drivers as a figure in a blood-stained wedding dress. Some drivers see her in their rearview mirror, sitting in the backseat. The bridge is notorious for paranormal sightings, making it a chilling drive for those daring enough to cross. Brumder Mansion, Milwaukee 3046 W Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53208 Built in 1910, Brumder Mansion is now a bed and breakfast filled with ghostly tales. Stay overnight for a unique experience and perhaps leave with a ghost story of your own. Maribel Caves Hotel, Maribel County Rd R, Maribel, WI 54227 Locally called “Hotel Hell,” Maribel Caves Hotel has burned down multiple times and is rumored to contain a portal to the underworld. Ghostly figures, strange mists, and a faint smell of smoke greet visitors to the ruins, making it a notorious site for paranormal investigators. The Grand Opera House, Oshkosh 100 High Ave, Oshkosh, WI 54901 The Grand Opera House in Oshkosh, dating back to 1883, has seen numerous ghostly sightings, including a former stage manager who watches over performances. Omar Waheed reports from Baraboo (2:26), where the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association is holding its second annual conference. He talked with a half dozen leaders in the industry about the conference, the possibilities – especially for Indigenous entrepreneurs — and the legislative challenges. Plus, Green Bay school superintendent Dr. Claude Tiller resigned after appearing on a radio show in Atlanta, and a school board member resigned a week later. Stephanie, Rob and Dave talk through what led to that (34:57), now that we have the audio from the radio show and some sense as to what prompted the school board to launch an investigation. And speaking of school superintendents, a Madison native will be the next leader of MMSD (52:40). Dave shares some memories of interviewing him when he was a principal here and we talk through what the school board can expect from him. When the body of fourteen-year-old Chris Steiner was discovered floating in the Wisconsin River on July 10, 1994, it brought a heartbreaking end to the search for the boy who had mysteriously disappeared from his Baraboo, Wisconsin home a week earlier. Officially, the cause of death was drowning. His death was a tragic accident, and nothing more. But was it? A year later, a harrowing 911 call from 14 year old Thad Phillips would bring to light a monster in the boys' own neighborhood, one that would change the ruling in Chris Steiner's death and horrify the community forever.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1997.
