Re-published from March 28, 2024   Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney  ...    If you are born again, hopefully you have learned to focus on something other than your physical body as the world does.   I go to physician assistant once a year in order to get a prescription for Ambien sleep aid.  Other than that, I will go in if I really need help with something and can't take care of it with standard over the counter medicine in a reasonable time.   I'm 86, and most of the time, I don't have to go to medical office except once a year.   But I have learned to pay very little attention to my human body.  Usually it gets well by itself after 2 or three days.  I think God created it that way.  I don't do "preventive medicine", because I don't want to do it.  I don't believe in it.  I have the right to choose.  So I choose.   But being a real Christian, I'm really not afraid to die.   Recently I was so depressed by something a church woman did, I asked God to let me die.  But God didn't and HE caused things to help me recover.   Remember how Elijah asked to die when Jezebel was after him?  But God had an angel cook him a meal out in the wilderness and after Elijah ate, things looked better to him, and he kept doing the work of a prophet of God.   The outward man usually perishes.  I really don't consider this to be a big deal as some church people do.  So what?  Life doesn't end just because we die!   There is an appointed time of 70 years life in Bible, but some live longer.  Many are already well past that 70 year time and they try to hang on as if they were 20.  I consider this foolish and I choose not to do this nor do I choose to put myself into the medical system thinking to extend life.   I only want to live as long as I can exhort the church.  I've asked God to let me die the day I can no longer exhort the church.  (I'm 86.)   My PA thought I might be having heart attacks and she offered to administer an EKG to find out.  I thought about her offer, and then said, "I don't think so."  (I don't want to be caught up in this.)  If I die, I die.  I learned to take aspirin when the pain struck and in a few days it stopped.)   I've met people who can't do anything much but think about their bodies.  That is a trap I really do not plan to participate in.     (Of course if the pain got bad enough, I might ask for some pills until I could die.  So far, that hasn't happened.  But I'm not trying to live on this earth.  You have to know what your goal is.)

As I explained in my pervious post, I fractured my C6 and C7 vertebrae when I landed head first after going over the handle bars on my mountain bike. The fractures, combined with significant disc degeneration in my C5 and C6 caused compression and flattening of my spinal cord, which then caused Central Cord Syndrome. The surgeon performed emergency surgery where he and his team removed bone spurs on C5 and C6, removed the remains of my two degenerated discs, replaced them with spacer cages and an artificial bone matrix, and fused my C5 to C6 and C6 to C7 with a two-level anterior cervical fusion and discectomy (ACFD). I also had some bleeding on my brain, but it seems to have been minimal. Initially, the doctors said it would be a few days before I'd walk and would be in the hospital for a week to a week and a half, and activity for the foreseeable future would be kept to a minimum. Against their recommendations, I demanded to stand up on my own 12 hours after surgery, and later that day said I wanted to walk. The next day, I asked to use the stairs between floors at the hospital and was discharged three days after my surgery. From the beginning, I also told the medical staff that my hands felt like I'd punched a cement wall. Each staff member told me it was just nerve pain, even though my hands looked like they belonged on the Pillsbury Dough Boy they were so swollen. At a follow-up appointment last week, I told the PA the same thing and she said the same thing: "It's just nerve pain." I asked her to order an X-ray on my right hand, which she begrudgingly did. It turns out I was right. My right hand was broken. My left seems to have faired slightly better. With that as a brief summary, I'll share what we're doing to speed up the recovery process, and how that contrasts with the advice I got from the medical team. I'm sharing this information as a way to detail an "unofficial" case study, not to suggest this for others. If anything, I hope that by sharing the details of what we're doing in this and future posts, it'll cause others in similar situations to ask better questions of their medical team. I also hope it causes healthcare practitioners to invest some time into exploring ways their patients can safely recover from similar injuries in less time. Side Effects of Conventional Guidance Following Spinal Cord Injuries Following a spinal cord injury and surgery like mine, conventional advice during the first 6-12 weeks includes: Wearing a collar (i.e. Aspen collar) at all times. An exception may be to take it off to shower after 2-4 weeks. My PA said I should only do that if I have a shower chair to sit on. I thought that was funny. No lifting items over 10 poundsLimit exercise to walking or riding on a recumbent bike Once patients are "allowed" to become more active, the guidance is often akin to lifting soup cans or pink dumbbells. While I'm all for protecting the area of injury and helping to ensure the fusion heals appropriately, I'm also 100% against allowing the rest of my body to fall apart while that happens. Especially if it isn't absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, most patients aren't led to see things this way. As a result, the average spinal cord injury patient experiences the following: 18-46% decrease in muscle cross sectional area in first six weeks, and 45-80% after six monthssignificant decrease in ratio of slow twitch to fast twitch muscle fiber type, which reduces fat metabolism, stamina, and enduranceUp to 126% increase in intramuscular fat within first six weeks and more than a 300% increase after six months3X increased risk of developing diabetes compared to uninjured, comparable adultsSignificant loss in bone mineral density, leading more than 40% of SCI patients to developing osteoporosis or osteopenia, according to one study These stats are disturbing! As of 3 1/2 weeks post-op, not a single healthcare professional from my care team has recommended an...

Functional Medicine & Where's the Beef? [17:57] Lisa says: I have a double question for the healthy rebellion!  My teenage daughter really doesn't like much meat (I think it's a texture thing she will eat sloppy joes for some reason like a champ as well as fish we catch in the lake) and I'm having a hard time upping her intake.   Is there a decent protein powder I can have her add to her smoothly bowls she's obsessed with while I keep trying the soups and broths you mentioned to another emailer?  The health of our kids is of great concern to me looking at their food choices at school and now that she's mobile and can go buy her own junk. I'd also like to find a functional medicine provider in MN for us but it's daunting whos for real or who's a fake?  My extreme distrust of the main stream medical community as a result of the Vid and my father dying of a massive heart attach after being told he was Soooo Healthy has made it difficult to trust anyone. Thanks Lisa 2. Weight Loss While On Hyperthyroid Medication [26:26] Douglas says: Hi Robb, I am a 56 yr old male recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My doctor has placed me on methimazole 2.5 mg and my numbers look great. The problem is that since being on the medication my weight has gone from 215 to 240 and I am 6'2" tall. I have read many articles stating that it is hard if not impossible to lose weight while on Methimazole. My PA states it is not the medication, but my thyroid that is piling on the pounds. Do you have any recommendations on what I can do start losing weight? I loved your cleared hot podcast and I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day. 3. Trouble sleeping with delaying breakfast or eating low carb [29:55] Flannery says: Hi, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on why I have trouble sleeping if I don't eat first thing in the morning or if I decrease the carbs in my diet. I'm often not hungry in the morning, but if I skip breakfast or move my first meal to more than about an hour from when I wake up (usually between 6:30 -7:30) I will have significant trouble falling/staying asleep that night. The same thing happens when I shift my diet to include more fat and less carbohydrate as my primary fuel source. I'm a fairly competent food tracker, so I believe I am keeping my calories and protein the same as I make these changes. I've also tried (per your inspiration) increasing my salt intake by about 2g sodium/day (above just salting food to taste) when I delay my first meal or decrease carbs, but it has not improved my sleep. I don't have a huge need to delay breakfast or shift my diet, but some days higher fat/lower carb just sounds better and I'd like to be able to be more flexible with my diet without losing sleep. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks, Flannery Background: -I'm a 33 y.o. active woman (I have a pretty physical job as a farmer and work out 3-4x weekly either rock climbing or barbell strength training). -I'm fairly lean with a body comp I'm happy with (5 '8'' and 125lbs). -I don't think I'm under-eating calories or protein. When I track I seem to maintain on about 2000-2500 kcal and I love protein, typically averaging about 110-140g/daily mostly from meat and greek yogurt. Usually my diet breaks down to about 25% protein, 45% carbs, 30% fat. -I've been eating my own version of paleo/W.A.Price-ish for about 10 years (I include rice and dairy, I don't eat nuts and seeds.) High Ferritin Levels and Resistance Training [11:44] Keith says: So I am a 48 YO male. 5-11 200 15-16 bf I follow a higher red meat diet 180-200g of protien and 80-100 g of fat a then 80-100g unprocessed carbs. I had some blood work done and my ferritin came back 803. Which is concerning My iron was 98 TIBC 286 and transferrin saturation is 34. Hemoglobin 12.9 and hematocrit is 38.4. My PA thinks I have anemia. I have no symptoms of fatigue but she is referring me to a hematologist. Would heavy resistance training have any affect on ferritin levels? searching the innerwebs I saw a few mentions of inflammation from heavy resistance training causing elevated levels and one should take 48-72 off from heavy training before blood tests. Any thoughts on resting then retesting my ferritin? 2. Electrolytes Before or After Workout? [14:15] David says: Dear Robb, I'm writing from hot, humid Singapore.  I'm 54 years old and work out in the cooler early mornings before work.  60-75 min workouts of running, sprinting and/or bodyweight workouts. I'm a big fan of LMNT Citrus Salt and find that I perform and recover better using it.  My normal routine is to drink one stick immediately upon waking, then get after it. I always end my workouts drenched in sweat.  Is it better to wait until after my workout to replace my lost electrolytes?  I would consume one before/one after - except that importing LMNT into Singapore is expensive! I appreciate any insight, Robb.  I love your work, dude. Post Covid Hair Loss & Food Aversions [16:46] Shannon says: Hello Rob & Nikki! I had covid at the beginning of April 2021. I had a very easy time with it, likely thanks to 10 years of being careful about my diet & taking a preventative approach to my health (thanks to info from you guys & many others in the paleo/keto space). I had a slight fever on & off for about 10 days, a migraine (which isn't uncommon for me), & fatigue. My appetite was suppressed for many days & when it came back I wasn't craving the foods I should be eating. In fact, my favorite foods which are steaks & beef, still aren't as appealing as they used to be. Meat in general, I am not craving but I do make myself eat it. I take quality supplements, that contain zinc. Do you have another suggestions for how to repair my taste buds? I also have started to lose some hair. Apparently this is common 3-4 months after covid. I am praying it stops soon. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Your work has definitely helped me get through the “pandemic” & I rock my HRR t shirt on many of my walks! Thanks for all you do! -Shannon 4. How To Get Young Kids To Try New Foods [23:58] Scott says: Robb, I've been following you for years, since about 2009. The amount of knowledge you have is impressive and I never get tired of listening to you, although i do miss the good ole days with Greg Everett. I never adopted the paleo diet because I have never had any health issues but I am now looking for some advice. My 4 year son is showing asthma like symptoms and I think it is due to his diet. We have tried to get him to eat healthier but he always gags when he tries something new. Do you have any book suggestions or advice for me to help my son eat new foods?  I understand you're a busy guy so I don't expect a response. I just had to ask you because I really value your opinion/experience. Thanks for all you do. Scott 5. Methane Mitigation [30:17] Nicholas says: Dear Robb Wolf, I recently read Sacred Cow and found it absolutely brilliant. I am trying to deepen my understanding of regenerative agricultural practises with a view to one day starting my own farm. I have a question regarding cattle feed additives for methane mitigation. On a recent MeatRx podcast, Shawn Baker asked Dr. Frank Mitloehner about his work on feed additives and whether they are required in regenerative systems. Dr. Mitloehner says “grazing animals are currently the greatest challenge with respect to enteric methane because they are not as accessible. […] Some thoughts are to include some active ingredients into the salt lick or into the water that the animals drink. Vaccination is another possibility.” Here is a link to his full answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K31OZHUtvEg&t=2880s Do you agree with Dr. Mitloehner that these kinds of additives are necessary? I was under the impression (from your work and his) that enteric methane was not something to worry about when animals are well managed in concert with the surround ecosystem. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the issue. Thank you so much in advance for your time! Kind regards, Nicholas Harley P.S. Khadija is travelling, utilising her time so that she can talk to us about how to effectively utilise and manage time to be as productive as possible in your business and as an entrepreneur. In this engaging and honest episode, Khadija talks about the importance of having a team who have passion, being present with your kids and the reality of intensively building up a business from nothing to 30 employees. This is a very honest podcast  Khadija is ‘keeping it real’ about what it is really like to be a successful entrepreneur and a mum.   KEY TAKEAWAYS You must identify how you can effectively utilise your time to be as productive as possible. I’m a very last-minute person so having a great team around me is vital. My PA has helped to create great questions for guests on the podcast and is brilliant at producing interesting questions for the ‘yes, no’ game My other PA has been busy organising the podcast launch party. Together as a team, we raised in excess of £5,000 in sponsorship towards the party in only 5 weeks. My Virtual Assistant is based in the Philippines and helps me with the tasks I don’t have time to do, such as messaging on my social media platforms LinkedIn and Facebook. Without having a team, I wouldn’t be able to be so productive and have time to spend with my family. Sitting everybody round the table and eating is what is important to me and makes me happy. I love walking my dog, going to the gym and swimming every week, if it wasn’t for my support network I wouldn’t be able to do the things that are important to me. When I was building my business, it was massively time-consuming and it's now nice to have a passionate team who I can work with. when I was building my business, I had 30 members of staff, was always anxious, hardly slept and barely paid myself. I now know there are smarter ways to work When I started my business, I didn’t know my knowledge was worth something that I could lift people and inspire them with my motivational talks, I didn’t know how easy it is to sell things online In reality, you can have a business and use social media to be successful without vast numbers of employees and premises. Build a community and a support system and know you are not alone but there are smarter ways to work.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I have been working hard on the podcast and have lined up some great guests’ ‘I’m focusing on making money, being the most productive and being present with my kids’ ‘I can go a little ‘fangirl’ ‘There is a lot that goes into the day to day and I couldn’t do it without my team’ ‘Sometimes the old school business mentality can hold us back ‘ ‘She’s been really hands-on and supportive, I’m really grateful’   ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. As a BBC Apprentice finalist and busy Mumpreneur, Khadija is on a mission to build an empire whilst raising two children, inspiring others to make their passion their profession. Khadija speaks openly about how she grew up in an underprivileged area, turned her daughter’s birth trauma into a motivational story, and became a BBC Apprentice finalist, successful business mentor, motivational speaker, property investor and podcast host.
