Way back in February, thousands of dental technicians gathered in Chicago for the 40th anniversary of LMT Lab Day Chicago. While stationed in the Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) Ballroom, we got to talk to many wonderful people that make up our industry. We start this episode with a technician that followed his dentist uncle in Mexico and went to dental technician school. Christopher Hernandez soon found himself making sleep apnea devices for years before finding his new home at Clear Choice doing All-on-X cases. Then we welcome back to the podcast, Greg Everett. Last time we talked to Greg, he was with a company that manufactured milling burs. Now he works on the whole mill with his new company Denteon (https://denteon.com/). Specializing in Roland Mills, Greg provides a service to complete rebuild or repair your mill so you can continue to get your monies worth for years longer than expected. We suggest visiting denteon.com if you have any Roland Mills. We wrap up the episode with Ivoclar's own Joe Braxon. Still talking about mills, but this time exclusively with Ivoclar mills. Joe is responsible for the installation, training, and service for all of the PrograMills. Joe talks about his background, finding Ivoclar, and what sets their mills above the rest. Take it from Laura Prosser, the digital marketing manager for Ivoclar North America (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us). She would like to invite you to start following them on Instagram. It's your chance to obtain exclusive updates on product announcements, industry news, upcoming educational events, and heartwarming stories about our local team and industry professionals. Have been listening on and off since the paleo solution days with Greg Everett. (six listeners can't be wrong!) Quick back story (that you can cut if this is too much but maybe helpful context), about a year ago I had a bout of food poisoning and developed a weird aversion/anxiety around eating for a few months after. I got through it with meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy and completed the Nerva hypnotherapy course recently (which was pretty nice). I think a lot of ibs symptoms that I developed came from anxiety, panic, hypervigilance and fixation and have mostly subsided as I worked in it. However, I still have problems with Regularity. I'll have a few days of slow digestion and some heartburn, bloating, and gas then a few days of everything coming out with some moderate to severe "get your ass to the bathroom quick!" mixed in, then back to slow... You get the picture. It's like things get backed up then all move at once, rinse and repeat. Went to a gi doc and he was pretty not helpful - tested for celiac (I don't have it) and IBD (I don't have it) and then told me to, like, ya know, drink Metamucil and maybe, if I wanted, follow a low fodmap diet, or whatever man... Oh, and stop drinking kombucha. Good luck! I also did a Viome test and it told me my overall gut health was good but digestion scores were poor and have some very vague dietary recommendations, though I haven't tried their probiotic yet. Anyway, with the testing behind me I went down the path of looking back at diet and driving myself insane, it's just so hard to pick through the noise Fiber is good! No fiber is not necessary! Eat yogurt! No actually, dairy is bad! Take Probiotics! No, Probiotics don't matter, take prebiotics instead! It's probably Sibo bro! But you can easily check for that so.... And on and on it goes. OK, so my actual question is: Are there any general dietary or lifestyle non-negotiables you would reccomend to help with digestion and regularity? What are the food or diet boxes to tic. Maybe there are even some supplements or other potential things like zone 2 cardio, abdominal massage, cold showers... Anything. I'm pretty healthy otherwise with my exercise being wendler powerlifting and rucking, but don't follow a super strict diet. I do now super enzymes before the first bite of lunch and dinner and take Probiotics on and off along with some fermented foods. I try to drink a lot of water but fiber drinks tend to give me some stomach upset. Appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thanks for any help you can give!   GERD, ammonia breath, and macros Nancy writes: Hi Robb and Nikki: Been one of your 6 listeners since the Paleo Solution Podcast days and first just want to thank you both for the wealth of knowledge you continue to share... your curiosity, smarts, humility and sanity have been a godsend, especially over the last 3 years. Okay, here goes... I'm having two troubling issues and am wondering if they're related: I've had what I'm pretty sure is undiagnosed GERD for about the last 3 years, but a recent overindulgence at a cookout sent it over the top. I don't feel so much heart-BURN as bloating (in the stomach, not abdomen), along with a dry cough (mostly at night), a globus sensation in my throat, the feeling of post-nasal drip, and even fluid on the middle ear when things really flare up. Oh, and the first symptom I ever noticed was after an emergency appendectomy when I discovered my tooth enamel was being corroded... coincidence? To mitigate symptoms since this recent flare-up, I've been sleeping propped up at a 45-degree angle, chewing my food into oblivion, walking after meals, practicing diaphragmatic breathing and hoping like hell to get a handle on this (without meds) before it destroys my esophagus. (Tried pickle juice, ACV and ginger... very modest effects, at best, but tasty!) No one has had the balls to tell me this, but I'm pretty sure my breath smells like urine. I constantly smell it on the rim of my drinking glass, and no, I'm not drinking pee. Also did the lick-the-wrist test and got the same smell. The internet wants to convince me I have chronic kidney failure but my kidneys appear to be working fine... no pee issues at all other than smelling it where I shouldn't. For context: I'm a 56-year-old, post-menopausal female, 5-ft 8, 150-lb mesomorph, active daily (yoga and hiking), in good shape, strong immune system, don't smoke or drink (other than a glass of white wine once a week), have regular, near-perfect poops, and eat fairly clean (whole foods plus olive oil, butter, the occasional white basmati rice and super dark chocolate), with a long, never-fully consummated flirtation with keto... hey, fat is flavor, what're ya gonna do? I also, pretty naturally, tend to stick with a 16:8 fasting-feeding window, skipping breakfast most days. I'm wondering if (despite getting a decent amount of vegetable-, fruit-, and rice-based carbs) my high fat intake and the IF might have generated enough ketones to make my breath smell pee-ish, or if that's almost always a sign of too much protein. Thing is, I don't typically get more than 40-50g of animal protein a day (e.g., 2 or 3 eggs for lunch and a 6-oz. slab of salmon for dinner) and as a post-menopausal woman, feel my protein intake is already low. My hunch is that the pee breath and GERD are related, but I'm not clear as to how. I'm wondering — if I AM getting enough fat to be in ketosis, could the fat in my diet be causing the GERD? Or is it more likely that I'm not actually in ketosis but that the GERD is causing the pee breath? (And do you think the appendix surgery could have caused the GERD, what with things getting shoved around in there willy-nilly?) Apologies for the long-winded question-palooza... totally understand if this is too long for the podcast, but if you ARE able to offer any insights, they would be very much appreciated. The conversations Michael & I have sometimes feel like therapy. There is the sense that we can work out whatever happens to be front & center in our personal & professional lives through talking it out every Thursday morning at his condo. That's pretty much what psychotherapy is designed to do. Holding ourselves accountable for the choices we make is radical responsibility: from waking up & getting out the door on those stormy mornings to battling the inner & outer demons that feel like they want to devour us where we sit. I mention the book Tough by Greg Everett in this episode & I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the mental side of training. In this book, Everett talks about Character, Capacity, Capability. There is a the fourth C I forgot when mentioning it in this discussion, which is Commitment.  Interestingly enough, commitment is action & practice. This sets us off on a deeper exploration of a concept I have been unpacking since the pandemic, when many of us lost our purpose because races were cancelled. What follows here is a conversation that gets pretty personal, especially for Michael. We wondered whether or not to release this episode because of its sensitive nature, its raw bloody revelation of the struggle we have in our day to day lives. What is authenticity? What is true to our core essential nature? & why does running sometimes feel like a slick sales job designed to sell us something. Michaels & I are businessmen. We are entrepreneurs operating in late Western capitalism, attempting to both provide for our families & to change the running culture. This conversation reveals just how hard that work can be. & we know we are not alone. We know you also feel this paradox of wanting the next new thing that will make you better, faster, sexier, cooler at your next race & knowing, with everything you hold dear, with every ounce of your godforsaken soul that running cannot be capitalized upon, that - at its essence - running is pure being. That is all. So if you resonate with this episode, let us know. Drop us a line. Give this podcast a rating or share how it makes you think & feel. Because the only way we steal this culture is when we all show up & practice our bliss.

In this episode , we look back at John Jenrette's fateful decision to run for the South Carolina State House. He was living in North Myrtle Beach and struggling as a Lawyer. In that day lawyers could not advertise and John Jenrette was trying to figure out a way to get his name out to the public. He was, he said, tired of getting paid in collard greens. It was a decision that would change his life forever. He won. That lifted him to position of Chairman of the Horry County State House delegation. He was 28 years old and the system of that day was entirely different than what we have in the state today. There were no County Councils and the state senators ran the county. In that respect, John Jenrette was sitting in a really good position, he was young, energetic, and the cousin of the sitting State Senator in Horry County, James Stevens. It was a relationship that would pay dividends. In this episode, we will hear about how under Jenrette's leadership, along with Senator James Stevens, they went to work to build roads, bridges, and develop a fledgling school, then known as Coastal Carolina Community College. It was quite the ride for a young man in a hurry.  It was this extraordinary run in the State Legislature that would be the foundation for his later runs for Congress against an entrenched , powerful incumbent. Then we learn about the distant family tie between John Jenrette, a man of  French Huguenot descent, and the leader of  another nation on the North American Continent , Pierre Trudeau , the Prime Minister of Canada.  Jenrette enjoys talking about his family and their long history in America and the Carolinas. We will also be introduced to one of John Jenrette's closest friends and a legendary political ally whose career was as large as any in modern South Carolina history, Senator Dick Elliott of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.  We will look back at their friendship, its importance in the rise of John Jenrette, and Dick Elliot's own outsized career both in politics,  in business, and its  impact on our State of South Carolina and through out the Pee Dee region. Dick Elliott was as responsible for the rise of the Grand Strand in the Golf business, the tourism business, the improved road system, and the growth in Real Estate as anyone in the state, for he was a leader in every one of those industries as well as politics for nearly a half century.  In this episode we look back as John Jenrette lays the groundwork for one of the great upsets in the history of South Carolina politics against Representative John McMillan, who had served 16 terms in Congress. That will be the next story we will tell.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Nixon and Watergate

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2023 9:24

This episode is a housekeeping episode to address several circumstances that we felt needed to be addressed as we moved forward with our documentary presentation.  Former Congressman John Jenrette passed away just as we were completing this series of shows. It was such sad news because anyone who knew former Congressman John Jenrette could not help but like him.  It left us with a few dilemmas, mainly that at various times we talked about the congressman in the present tense. I felt like addressing the passing here was the best way to address that issue and then allowing the documentary to speak for itself. We also wanted to say thank you to Ben Burroughs of Coastal Carolina University who allowed us the use of his three hours of oral history interviews with Former Congressman John Jenrette. This may be hard to believe given John Jenrette's rather large place in the collective memory of our area but there was actually not that much material readily available about his time in office nor the scandal that ended his career. It had all occurred prior to the widespread use of VCR's and long before the internet. A lesson I learned in this season was that if you were not a President nor served during the modern age of technology, there would actually be very little available to tell your story.  This was also true of former Congressmen John McMillan and Ed Young. This season of documentary episodes would literally not have been possible without the use of the materials from Ben Burroughs and Coastal Carolina University, so we wanted to say a special thank you to them for the use of the oral histories. We also want to thank some other sources for their materials too, all of which were vitally important to the show, John Bonsignor and Paul Gable for the interview on Talking Politics, Greg Everett and his three interviews from Carolina People, Dianne Devaughn Stokes and her Inside Out interview with HTC, and the campaign video interview from the Dick Elliot retrospective.  It was also very important to be able to use the book "Capitol Steps and Missteps" written by John Clark and Cookie VanSice, two long time Jenrette staff members,  as a guide for much of the Documentary presentations as well. I am personally very proud of this our 10th season. It is the most personal of all the materials we have done because we knew and were friends with former Congressman John Jenrette, and the show focuses so much attention on Horry County, South Carolina. It is a place of many colorful, and interesting people and features. This is my home, and I am proud of it, and have enjoyed this opportunity to introduce it to you on our podcast. I hope you enjoy the shows. Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

I'm often asked about Olympic weightlifting. Specifically, I'm asked about lifts like the clean and jerk, snatch, and power clean, and how to incorporate them into a more general strength training or even bodybuilding program. Should you even include Olympic-style lifts? What are the benefits of Olympic weightlifting? Can it increase your power, speed, explosiveness, and athleticism? Is it dangerous? All that and more in this podcast. I wanted to get an Olympic weightlifting expert on the podcast to help answer these questions. So, I tagged in Greg Everett, owner of Catalyst Athletics, which is a USA Weightlifting National Champion team and a huge educational resource for Olympic weightlifting content. Not only is Greg an accomplished Olympic weightlifter himself, but he's a coach at the world championship level. He's also an author of a dozen books, including Olympic Weightlifting, the world's best-selling book on the subject. So I was happy to have him join me for an interview. In this podcast you'll learn about . . . What Olympic lifting is and how it differs from strength training, bodybuilding, and powerlifting Reason to do Olympic weightlifting (and who shouldn't do it) How to learn the Olympic lifts and how to get started with it How Olympic lifting affects explosiveness and athleticism Olympic lifting's safety and danger compared to basic compounds (and what to do to avoid injuries) Programming considerations (and how to progress) Body fat percentage sweet spots for performance And more . . . So if you've ever wondered about Olympic weightlifting, what you might be missing by not doing any Olympic lifts, and how to get started with Olympic-style weightlifting, listen to this episode. On November 14, 2021,  on a Sunday, Horry County, South Carolina, lost a towering giant in the history of the region. Lois Eargle was a trailblazer, never politically correct, and never afraid to speak her mind. She was an unabashedly proud public servant for the people of Horry County and most of all a servant of her Lord, Jesus Christ. She opened doors for young people,  an especially women in politics, as the first woman elected to the South Carolina State House from Horry County and then the first woman elected Horry County Auditor. By the time her long, nearly 50 year career was through,  she retired this summer in July of 2021, Horry County had not only a female Horry County Auditor replacing her  but women held the Treasurer's Office, the Probate Judge's office, a former Chairman of County Council, another legislator from Horry County from Socastee was a woman and the Mayor's of Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Conway  were all women plus countless members of city councils all across the county, and a former Mayor of Atlantic Beach were women, and even a former Governor and prospect for President from South Carolina was a  women. In countless ways Lois Eargle led the way, she may not have always done it perfectly, but she surely did it in style and one thing everyone will agree on is that Lois Eargle won't be forgotten when they write the history of the Independent Republic of Horry County for the nearly 50 years she stood tall on her times. On a personal note, she was an enormous influence on my life and career from the time I met her when I was 13 years old and she was a candidate for the United States Congress. She would go on to be my employer, a mentor, an advisor, an occasional adversary but always a  friend and someone whom I could always count on for help if I needed it.  I was, as was almost everyone who ever knew Lois Eargle,  always, always  star struck. As the Carly Simon song says "Nobody Does it Better" and in our little corner of the world that song described no one in the political world better than Lois Eargle. So here is our tribute to her. (We would like to thank Greg Everett , Dianne Devaughn and Chuck Stokes for allowing us to use all of their available interviews to put this tribute together as well as WBTW, WPDE and the campaign commercial archives of Congressman Tom Rice. This show would not have been possible with out the use of their material )

High Ferritin Levels and Resistance Training [11:44] Keith says: So I am a 48 YO male. 5-11 200 15-16 bf I follow a higher red meat diet 180-200g of protien and 80-100 g of fat a then 80-100g unprocessed carbs. I had some blood work done and my ferritin came back 803. Which is concerning My iron was 98 TIBC 286 and transferrin saturation is 34. Hemoglobin 12.9 and hematocrit is 38.4. My PA thinks I have anemia. I have no symptoms of fatigue but she is referring me to a hematologist. Would heavy resistance training have any affect on ferritin levels? searching the innerwebs I saw a few mentions of inflammation from heavy resistance training causing elevated levels and one should take 48-72 off from heavy training before blood tests. Any thoughts on resting then retesting my ferritin? 2. Electrolytes Before or After Workout? [14:15] David says: Dear Robb, I'm writing from hot, humid Singapore.  I'm 54 years old and work out in the cooler early mornings before work.  60-75 min workouts of running, sprinting and/or bodyweight workouts. I'm a big fan of LMNT Citrus Salt and find that I perform and recover better using it.  My normal routine is to drink one stick immediately upon waking, then get after it. I always end my workouts drenched in sweat.  Is it better to wait until after my workout to replace my lost electrolytes?  I would consume one before/one after - except that importing LMNT into Singapore is expensive! I appreciate any insight, Robb.  I love your work, dude. Sincerely, David LMNT Homebrew Guide https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0052/6434/3074/files/9_Simple_Electrolyte_Homebrew_Recipes_-_Elemental_Labs.pdf 3. Post Covid Hair Loss & Food Aversions [16:46] Shannon says: Hello Rob & Nikki! I had covid at the beginning of April 2021. I had a very easy time with it, likely thanks to 10 years of being careful about my diet & taking a preventative approach to my health (thanks to info from you guys & many others in the paleo/keto space). I had a slight fever on & off for about 10 days, a migraine (which isn't uncommon for me), & fatigue. My appetite was suppressed for many days & when it came back I wasn't craving the foods I should be eating. In fact, my favorite foods which are steaks & beef, still aren't as appealing as they used to be. Meat in general, I am not craving but I do make myself eat it. I take quality supplements, that contain zinc. Do you have another suggestions for how to repair my taste buds? I also have started to lose some hair. Apparently this is common 3-4 months after covid. I am praying it stops soon. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Your work has definitely helped me get through the “pandemic” & I rock my HRR t shirt on many of my walks! Thanks for all you do! -Shannon 4. How To Get Young Kids To Try New Foods [23:58] Scott says: Robb, I've been following you for years, since about 2009. The amount of knowledge you have is impressive and I never get tired of listening to you, although i do miss the good ole days with Greg Everett. I never adopted the paleo diet because I have never had any health issues but I am now looking for some advice. My 4 year son is showing asthma like symptoms and I think it is due to his diet. We have tried to get him to eat healthier but he always gags when he tries something new. Do you have any book suggestions or advice for me to help my son eat new foods?  I understand you're a busy guy so I don't expect a response. I just had to ask you because I really value your opinion/experience. Thanks for all you do. Scott 5. Methane Mitigation [30:17] Nicholas says: Dear Robb Wolf, I recently read Sacred Cow and found it absolutely brilliant. I am trying to deepen my understanding of regenerative agricultural practises with a view to one day starting my own farm. I have a question regarding cattle feed additives for methane mitigation. On a recent MeatRx podcast, Shawn Baker asked Dr. Frank Mitloehner about his work on feed additives and whether they are required in regenerative systems. Dr. Mitloehner says “grazing animals are currently the greatest challenge with respect to enteric methane because they are not as accessible. […] Some thoughts are to include some active ingredients into the salt lick or into the water that the animals drink. Vaccination is another possibility.” Here is a link to his full answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K31OZHUtvEg&t=2880s Do you agree with Dr. Mitloehner that these kinds of additives are necessary? I was under the impression (from your work and his) that enteric methane was not something to worry about when animals are well managed in concert with the surround ecosystem. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the issue. Thank you so much in advance for your time! Kind regards, Nicholas Harley P.S. Our guest this week is Greg Everett, owner of Catalyst Athletics and author of the new book “Tough”As the subtitle of Greg's book explains, this book is a guide to building true mental, physical & emotional toughness for success & fulfillment. It's about a lot more than how to be the traditional vision of a “tough guy” - and in today's conversation we talk about why clearly defining your values and purpose are foundational to becoming tough, the four C's that define toughness for Greg, and why tough people should have a journaling routine. To connect with Greg, give him a follow on Instagram where he is @catalystathletics and to order the book online you can check out becomingtough.com where you will find a ton of absolutely glowing reviews for this book. This conversation is not what you might expect.  A world renowned olympic weightlifting coach, on the Essential Strength Podcast, talking about toughness - and we're having a conversation about fulfillment, empathy, journaling and discovering your true purpose. But that's the point - being tough doesn't mean falling in line with some pre-historic definition of being the burly man who shoves their feelings down into the deepest recesses of their brain, carries a big stick around and pretends that nothing hurts. Being tough is about having the courage to identify what sets your soul on fire, creates that greatest good in the world and being tough enough to stay authentic to those things.Action PlanYour action plan this week is simple - start a journaling practice. Try it for at least two solid weeks. I know I was super resistant to this for a long time but in the last 4 weeks of podcasts, we've had an Olympic athlete, world record-holding powerlifter and author/weightlifting coach all have one thing in common - they are adamant about the incredible power of journaling. So start - TODAY - by writing down one thing you are grateful for and one affirmation - an “I am”, “I can” or “I will” statement - and do that each day for 2 weeks. I've been doing it for about 4 weeks now, not perfectly, but as many mornings as I remember too, and I can say the mornings I write down my gratitude and my affirmation always set me up for a great day.Alright, that's it for this week. Until next time, we wish you STRENGTH and GOOD HEALTH!
