This week, Khadija is keeping it real with Linda Plant, one of Lord Sugar’s most trusted and respected colleagues, and a regular fixture on BBC’s The Apprentice as part of the now infamous “Interview Week” Linda has joined the show to discuss the new business landscape and how business leaders can do their part to restore confidence. KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s crucial in today’s climate for business leaders to provide reassurance and creativity, in order to help, inspire, and provide valuable resources for those in need of direction. Formal education has its place, but the real entrepreneurs are the ones who have taught themselves. Business acumen does not come from the page, but real experience. The smartest way of being in business is to keep the costs low and focus on the tangible benefits, instead of trying to look as though you’re part of the wealthy set. No one should be counted out because of their age. On the contrary, the older generation have lived through recessions, hardships, success and invention, and should be embraced in the business world. BEST MOMENTS ’No jargon - just true grit business knowhow’ ’Sometimes us ice-queens really do have to let our guards down!’ ’The smartest way to do business is to be as tight as’ ’Success doesn’t have a barrier' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Linda Plant Twitter - https://twitter.com/LindaBPlant Linda Plant Academy - https://lindaplant.com To learn more about Linda’s Business Blueprint course visit - https://lindaplant.com/products/business-blueprint-course ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Stephen Kelly’s incredible journey through business has seen him head up some of the world’s most successful companies. As the ex-CEO of Sage, and Micro Focus International, Stephen has led some of the most powerful and influential businesses in history, and by doing so has changed the way we work and think. Stephen joins Khadija today to discuss his fascinating business career, his philosophies on leadership, and the new governmental roles that have seen him contribute to the many ways in which UK businesses are now able to compete on an international level. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you feel that you are the natural fit for a role in any company, then nothing is stopping you from doing your research, and writing directly to the CEO of that business in order to let them know. Obey the voice in your head and don’t be afraid to ask. Honesty and straightforwardness are often misconstrued as outspokenness and aggression. Never be afraid of a reputation, as they’re often wrong. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the work/life balance. It is a question of organising priorities and deciding whether the sacrifices required are conducive to your life at that time. One of the greatest things a leader can achieve is to ensure that our teams are encouraged to exceed their potential, and to be happy and comfortable with who they are. Building a bond of trust with our customers is as simple as going that extra mile in order to make them feel valued. We must never underestimate the importance of the personal touch. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’ve achieved more than I could ever have imagined’ ‘What we need to do is be bolder and back ourselves, and be true to ourselves’ ‘As a leader, you need to try and do the right thing every day, and support your people' ‘What strikes me about the great leaders is their humility and authenticity’ ‘We want to make every single one of these amazing customers able to sleep well at night and know that they can trust us’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Stephen Kelly LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephenkellyceo/?originalSubdomain=uk Stephen Kelly Twitter - https://twitter.com/SKellyCEO ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Despite placing as runner-up on the 2019 series of The Apprentice, Scarlett Allen-Horton’s business acumen landed her a business deal with Lord Sugar, who acquired a huge stake in Scarlett’s company, Harper Fox Global, a specialist recruitment firm dealing with executive-level talent. In this week’s show, Scarlett joins Khadija to discuss her experiences on the show, the motivations and inspirations that keep her going, and what life has been like since leaving the show! KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s far more important to be true to yourself than pretend to be someone else. Even qualities we think of as negative can be seen as strengths and assets. It’s important to consider our professional reputation, especially having taken part in something so high profile as The Apprentice. The image we project can play a part in people’s opinions for years to come. The most successful of entrepreneurs, haven’t necessarily achieved anything extraordinary to attain financial freedom. They’ve simply adopted the correct perspective on work and perseverance. Priorities in life and business are essential. Without them we can easily lose sight of the “why” in favour of chasing down more. Work out your “why”, and see that it always remains your driving force. Freedom comes from realising the importance of creating a sustainable business that can live and breathe without you. If you’re the key to why your business works, then you’ll never be free. BEST MOMENTS ‘I knew that if I was going to do this, I was going to give it my all’ ’The last thing I wanted to do was to come out of that and lose credibility’ ‘I worked so hard, because I really had no other choice’ ‘As long as you have your “why” at the forefront, then everything else will come' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Scarlett Allen-Horton Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/scarlettallenhorton/?hl=en Scarlett Allen-Horton Twitter - https://twitter.com/scarlettah_?lang=en Harper Fox Global - https://harperfoxglobal.com ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. It’s a very high energy show today as Khadija is joined by Alan Barratt, the founder of Grenade, the high-performance product line that has taken the world by storm! Alan discusses his incredible rise to the top, the determination that turned Grenade bars into the number one-selling chocolate bar in the UK, and how Alan balances his success with his personal life. It’s an incredible conversation about a story we’ve all played a part in! KEY TAKEAWAYS At the outset of the journey, times were tough. By fixing their view on the future they wanted, Alan and his wife worked relentlessly, their labours ultimately paying off when they turned £500 into a multi-million pound brand. Grenade products were never meant to replace a complete diet. They act as a supplement, as a form of diet suppressant, and can impel us to drink more fluids. As a business grows, it becomes less about the hustle and more about balancing. The lockdown has forced Grenade back into start-up phase, and the thrill of the hustle is very exciting. Too many businesses focus on selling a product once. Grenade has become the best in its class by offering a quality product that people adore. Business can be addictive, but we need to learn when to let go and trust others to do the job for us. Always remember why we began the journey, and never let your personal life suffer. BEST MOMENTS ’This was a hobby that turned into an obsession’ ‘You cannot out-train a bad diet’ ‘Most people don’t need a diet, they need a lifestyle change’ ’Surely it’s got to be better to keep existing customers happy?’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Alan Barratt LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/alan-barratt-101b1731/?originalSubdomain=uk Grenade - https://www.grenade.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, anxiety can unexpectedly strike down even the strongest of us. The risk of this is even greater due to the current crisis in the world. In this week’s show, Khadija candidly discusses her approach to tackling anxiety, the mental health challenges she faces each day, and the invaluable effects of kindness in today’s world. KEY TAKEAWAYS The first step in dealing with any mental health issues is always to share. Sometimes even the act of vocalising the issue causes it to dilute. You are the best judge of your mental capacity. If the world of social media is causing your anxiety to grow, make sure you streamline it to suit your own happiness. Never feel as though you are the only one with negative feelings. Anxiety and depression are far more common than people realise. Be kind. Be supportive. By increasing the positivity in the world we can turn the tide of negativity together. BEST MOMENTS ’The worst thing we can do in the world is pretend we’re all okay’ ’We all have our Achilles Heel’ ’These feelings are more normal than anyone could know’ ‘People who look like they’ve got their shit together are often the ones who are suffering the most' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. This week, Khadija goes from “Keeping It Real” to Keeping It Real Housewives Of Cheshire, as she chats to TV star and serial mumpreneur, Leanne Brown. Khadija and Leanne talk about the challenges of quarantine and how she’s keeping her family safe, the spark of interest that’s caused Leanne to want to know more about the world, troubling labels such as “WAG", and the positive ways in which Leanne is using her profile to aid constructive projects and causes. KEY TAKEAWAYS COVID-19 has demonstrated to everyone that there are blessings to be found all around in life. From the luxury of a garden to food on the table, we need to keep happiness alive by appreciating the gifts we have. The onset of the Coronavirus has sparked a newfound awareness for many people, in the many endeavours being made to help, and sometimes hinder, the fight against infectious diseases around the world. We are capable of controlling our physiology using mind-set. It takes strength and will, but we can affect the way we feel by controlling the way we think. Looking back on life with regret is dangerous. We cannot change the past. We can only influence the current moment, and do our best. It’s important not to punish ourselves later on. Self-improvement can come in many different forms. Physical exercise is only one of the ways we can develop. We should also concentrate on nurturing our happiness and attitude towards others. BEST MOMENTS ’These are the questions that have made me want to dig a little further’ ’Stay grounded, stay positive, but also educate yourself’ ’Nothing we do can ever be completely right, so we need to what’s good for us at that moment’ ‘Dream big!’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Leanne Brown Twitter - https://twitter.com/leanne_e_brown One Woman At A Time - https://www.onewomanatatime.co.uk Girl Got Grit - https://girlgotgrit.co.uk ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. This week, Khadija keeps it real with the winner of BBC’s The Apprentice 2019, Carina Lepore! Carina discusses how it feels to be Lord Sugar’s new business partner, how she’s teaching her family about the value of hard work, and the burning desire for success that drives her onwards and upwards. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes experiences such as The Apprentice, or other business opportunities, can allow us to see our plans from a different perspective, and cause us to completely realign our goals. Children should be instilled with the knowledge that hard work is the only way to success. The window of opportunity is small, so we need to make sure we catch it before it’s too late. Every entrepreneur needs a why, but it needs to be a much deeper-rooted reason than simply money. The greatest lesson learned is to be yourself. It’s impossible to comprehend the disappointment you would feel if you went through life trying to be something you’re not. BEST MOMENTS ‘I went in there with the intention of winning. 100%!’ ‘If you want to be successful just for the money, then you won’t be successful’ ’This is me now. I’m providing a service to the local community, for as long as this is with us’ ‘Unless you’ve been in it, you can never really understand' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Carina Lepore Twitter - https://twitter.com/carinalepore?lang=en Carina Lepore LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/carina-lepore-313b90193/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. For the past 25 years, Andrew Bloch has managed the public relations of not just VIPs and celebrities such as Lord Alan Sugar, but also on behalf of brands such as Coca-Cola and Volkswagen. Andrew talks about the proven public relation formula that has led him to worldwide success, the continuous role of marketing and PR in the face of a worldwide disruption, and the delicate balance between celebrity and ingenuity that, if handled correctly, can lead to lasting success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Times like these serve to remind us of our strengths, and of the incredible efforts of teams we have built and developed. Those among our teams who adapt and rise to the challenge are an inspiration to us all. Those seeking to ignite any newfound fame are wise to use the platform they’ve been given in order to fulfil their true potential. If they wish to become a businessperson, then act that way. Focus on the business and use the fame to elevate it. Sometimes it’s not about having the largest following. It’s about having the right following. A smaller, more engaged, and more dedicated audience will be infinitely more valuable than a larger, passive one. The rules of engagement between marketers and their audiences haven’t changed. The channels are the only things that have changed. People are still drawn to authenticity and a creative use of a celebrity profile. The best in the business realise that just because they have the means to share, doesn’t mean they should. A wise, insightful approach is always preferable to overload. Less is most definitely more in the long run. Andrew’s approach to marketing is always to begin with the idea, to perfect it and nurture it until formed, and to then decide on the best way of disseminating that idea. It is never channel-led but idea-led. BEST MOMENTS ‘In a twisted way, forward-thinking entrepreneurs like this kind of challenge’ ‘Use that fame to elevate your business’ ‘It’s about being smart with your message’ ‘What worked then works now: a clever use of celebrity, creativity, believability and authenticity’ ‘Be true to what you want to be' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Frank PR - https://welcometofrank.com/?page=home Andrew Bloch LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewbloch/?originalSubdomain=uk Andrew Bloch Twitter - https://twitter.com/AndrewBloch ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. KEY TAKEAWAYS This is not the end for business it’s a great time self-reflection. When you start a business, you don’t know if your business will work. You always need someone to look at your business with fresh eyes so having a mentor and being part of groups and educating yourself is a vital part of being successful and moving yourself and your business forward. Use this to positively look at your business and strategies and review them in detail. This is a great wakeup call – when before have you had the chance to sort out your life and business? This is a time to focus and get things sorted it’s a huge learning curve. In todays episode, Khadija is interviewed by Alex Sapala of The Business, Wealth & Mindset Podcast! They discuss Khadija’s entrepreneurial journey and how she got started with a cleaning business that she grew to a 6 figure business before taking part in The Apprentice. KEY TAKEAWAYS I googled the cheapest business to start, got some supplies and went out and got started I grew it into a successful 6 figure business Every entrepreneur needs a really good reason ‘why’ you have to want to do it. Everyone has something within them that they can use to drive them forwards. There are some many different things you can do. You have to make things happen and other companies doing the same thing is not a reason to not do it. If they can do it you can do it. It’s about having the right mindset and making use of opportunities. You have to accept that things will go wrong and being resilient is key for any entrepreneur. The apprentice was the best thing I’ve ever done When I went on the show my business was at its busiest but I came away from the show and looked at the business in the way Lord Sugar would with ‘fresh eyes’ and took the bold decision to close it to pursue my passions I find confidence in the fact I really want to help. I’m passionate about helping others to succeed. BEST MOMENTS ‘I just gave my mum a car’ ‘As an entrepreneur you have little light bulb moments all the time’ ‘I’ve been knocked down so many times’ ‘I learnt so much about myself on the show and would love to do it all over again’ ‘Being part of a community is so important’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real With Khadija Podcast The Business, Wealth & Mindset Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Alex is a prize-winning chartered accountant with experience in financial markets from trading finance, capital hedging, structural foreign exchange and interest rates to operational risk from the world’s top financial and advisory institutions including Deloitte, RBS and JPMorgan Chase Alex has been involved in property development programmes across different types since 2008, building and managing a portfolio that includes standard buy-to-lets, student accommodation and other houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs). Khadija is joined by the winner of The Apprentice 2018, Sian Gabbidon, and Camilla Ainsworth, the runner-up from the same year, for an informal chat about life in the house, life after the house, the friendships they forged during their time on the show, and the all-important question of who they would save if the house was on fire… KEY TAKEAWAYS Wherever Sian travels, it always seems to be work. That’s an upside and downside of working in the industry she has chosen. The taxi rides during The Apprentice were always a chance for Khadija, Sian and Camilla to exercise their very impressive vocal talents. The Apprentice 2018 contestants seem to have bonded more than any other year. Even today, they regularly get together, and have remained great friends. In today's episode, your host Khadija features on Fire in The Belly (with Pete Lonton!) Pete and Khadija talk about the importance of self-development, the axiom that causes her to seize each day, the importance of optimism, and her empowering definition of what it means to have “fire in the belly”. KEY TAKEAWAYS For Khadija, the want and need for more to life, is the fuel that keeps her growing and moving on. All good entrepreneurs have an unquenchable desire to keep succeeding. You only have one life. If you are presented with opportunities, then you need to try to make the best of them. Count your blessings and realise that you’re not here forever. Seize the day. Success in her youth had a converse effect on Khadija. Even though she worked hard and achieved much, she was often looked down upon because of her age. it’s a common, and somewhat unfortunate occurrence. People often mistake optimism with naivety. But the ability to see past the negative, to look for the positive in all things, is a rare and valuable asset. Having fire in your belly and doing nothing with it is futile. You need to get up, get out there, and let that fire burn bright. Khadija used her energy to hustle, and to make her mark on the world. Children made Khadija realise that there are definitely things to feel blessed about. It has given her a different perspective on materialism, frustration, and life in general. Money means stability for Khadija and her family. Money is equal to the security and happiness of those closest to her. This is the reason that drives her forward. Following The Apprentice, Khadija was given the opportunity to evaluate her life and her business. The opportunities that came her way in the wake of her appearance allowed her to see that her cleaning business was not her destiny. Personal relationships are an incredibly important part of business, as they are a vital component in your happiness, and subsequent desire to achieve. Khadija has had to face monstrous egos and an incredible level of chauvinism during her journey. The key is to stay humble, and to use that negative force as a means to drive yourself harder. Procrastination prevents things from getting done. It’s far more expedient to get things done as soon as possible. Ask questions. Take action. Stop making excuses. Enjoy the journey. We must make sure that we stop to enjoy the life we’re living. It’s good for not just ourselves, but the ones we love. Sometimes life can come at you so fast, that you don’t realise that you’ve suddenly become an adult. With two children (and one on the way), properties, and several businesses to take care of, life has suddenly crept up on Khadija. But what to do when this sense of overwhelm suddenly hits you? In her unique, humorous and relatable way, Khadija talks about going from carefree to responsible; from happy-go-lucky to high-level-accountable, and all the small things about the process that drive her mad. You’ve never heard Khadija keep it as real as this before! Buckle up, adults... KEY TAKEAWAYS The transition from carefree-life to responsible-adult arrives without you knowing it. One minute you’re planning where to meet your friends for brunch on a Saturday, the next you find yourself acting as referee to your children and trying to keep the dog exercised! You have to be a “grown up”, even if you’re feeling sick and unhappy. It’s even worse when you’re pregnant, and you have so much to deal with. Kids grow up so fast, but they want to be held, carried and nurtured. Where do you draw the line? At what point do you stop carrying them? Once you do stop, you’re almost declaring their infancy to be over. It’s hard for parents to make that decision. There’s so much pressure on parents to keep their kids healthy, and to make sure they eat nutritiously. But sometimes it’s so much easier to go for convenience! Being an adult is made so much worse by the expectations piled on by society. As if we don’t have enough to deal with, we are also made to feel like bad parents by outsiders who want us to be doing better. BEST MOMENTS ‘When the f**k did I grow up?’ ’There is nothing more depressing than coming home from work and finding a duvet cover hanging over your door’ ’There was one day in all of our lives when our parents stopped picking us up’ ‘Being grown up sucks!’ ‘Yeah, but do you know what’s quicker? KFC!’ ‘I’d rather keep my wash pile down if you don’t mind’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Diary Of A Mumpreneur - https://www.facebook.com/diaryofamumpreneur/ ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. After her sister’s podcast debut some months ago, Khadija’s five year-old daughter, Sorayah, has decided that now’s the time to step up to the mic herself! Ladies and gentlemen, meet Sorayah, who’s here to tell you all about her favourite subjects at school, grills Khadija on ice-cream flavours, her career plans, tells you why the banana went to the doctor’s, and reveals her favourite candidates on The Apprentice... There’s even time for a special musical guest... KEY TAKEAWAYS Maths is Sorayah’s favourite subject, and from the tests given to her by Khadija, it’s clear to see why. After much consideration, Sorayah chose to ask her mother about her favourite flavour of ice-cream… (clue: it’s a very vanilla answer…) When she grows up, Sorayah wants to be a doctor. If that falls through, she’ll be a vet. Sorayah’s favourite singer is Ed Sheeran. Her favourite movie is The Greatest Showman. Why did the banana go to the doctor’s? And why did the horse cross the road?l If Sorayah could be any animal, she’d be a seagull, because she would like to fly. Khadija and her father both attended school with Peppa Pig and Mickey Mouse. BEST MOMENTS ’"Shall I test your maths?" “No”' ‘He says brown noses’ ‘My voice is a little croaky’ ’Sometimes when they need to poo’ ‘Is your dad a lazy-butt?’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. One of the best ways to consume content nowadays is through podcasts. Not only does it save time, but it also helps you grasp ideas easier since you hear the emotions in the conversations. In this collaborative episode, Catherine is joined by the Keep It Real with Khadija Podcast host, who is none other than Khadija, to talk about the world of podcasting – from pre-planning to producing to publishing. They talk about how to scout guests, how to select the best VA, why people choose podcasts over radio, how to make a business thrive, and many more. There is also some unwritten podcasting etiquettes between podcasters which you might need to know. Then after the insightful discussion, Catherine plays Khadija’s Yes or No game at the end so listen in! KEY TAKEAWAYS As podcasters, where do Khadija and Catherine get their awesome guests? Khadija, for one, used the VIVA Club (link below) to find the most reliable virtual assistant she will work with. Guests are then selected by them, the hosts, for the VA’s to contact them. For Catherine, it also helps that she connects to most of the guests through social media platforms to get a chance to engage with them and tell them how your podcast can help them show how relevant they are. Stay in touch with your guests (and other podcasters who also invited the guest). Plan out when the content (i.e. audio/video) will be published and make sure it won’t cross with the launch of his other podcast guesting’s. You don’t want to anger other podcasters while getting the maximum engagement for your episode as much as possible. In addition, your guests might also know someone who can also offer a fresh perspective related to your podcast. Why do people prefer podcasts over radio nowadays? People love authenticity, the smooth informal flow of conversations. It’s easier to trust people who can be themselves easily. You can’t too much pressure on yourself in growing your business. For most, the first business they’ve manage was more of a big business course—learning what to do and not to do, correcting mistakes, and so on. Since May of 2019, Khadija has been acting as mentor to Sarah Downs, the co-founder of Doqaru, a business consultancy based in Aberdeen, which focusses on the energy sector. The relationship between them both has flourished through their connection, as both are busy parents, as well as busy in business. In this special episode, Khadija and Sarah talk about how they met, why it works so well between them, the pressures of parenting in business, and the lessons they’ve both learned from each other along the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS Khadija and Sarah have hit it off completely, partly because they’re both mums, but also because they both know what life can be like from a parent’s point of view in business, and so have been flexible with each other. Both Khadija and Sarah have found that they have added and gained more value from their online connections when they’ve connected offline, also. There are only so many things you can sell to an online-only connection. When it comes to The Apprentice, Sarah has no plans to appear. She feels that she would be painted somewhat as an aggressor, as she is very direct. But she very much enjoyed Khadija on the show! A mentor is incredibly useful in that they can cast a fresh pair of eyes on decisions and environment. They sometimes disagree, but mainly, mentoring has added huge value, and saved a huge amount of money. Mentoring works both ways, though. Khadija has learned a great deal from Sarah and Doqaru’s business practices and dealings; lessons that have transferred to her own business methods. An exciting element of business is watching values being created, expanded and developed over time by the team and talent you acquire and trust. Running a business is tough, and if you’ve been there from the inception, it can be difficult to let go of certain aspects. Disagreements occur all the time, but as long as respect still exists, then disagreement can still work. Accountability matters. Own your mistakes. There’s no such thing as failure. There are only lessons. If you can learn from something when it goes wrong, you’ll grow. Mentoring isn’t just about business advice. It can be equally as important to just show support, reassurance and companionship through the choppy waters of the business journey. BEST MOMENTS ‘You learn all the time’ ‘I always want to make sure that people are getting good value for money’ ‘I don’t like the word “mum-preneur' ‘It means “dirty” in Japanese’ ’There’s no point in reinventing the wheel, right?’ ‘It’s like an onion’ ’Sometimes you do have to take those risks. So long as you can hold your hands up afterwards’ ‘I was delirious at this point' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Doqaru - https://doqaru.com Sarah Downs LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahdowns-doqaru?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Greggs promised their staff 7 million in bonuses thanks to the success of their vegan sausage rolls and in this episode Khadija reflects on the importance of employee bonuses and incentives, sharing some great examples from her own experience as both an employee and successful business owner. There are lots of things that employees consider important when working, in any sized company, and being recognised for the work they do and being part of the team are key aspects that are important to them and there are ways for employers to recognise the part employees play in the journey to success. Employee benefits are a great way to celebrate the role employees play and provide benefits that make sure they feel valued. Listen in and hear how Khadija successfully achieved this in her business. KEY TAKEAWAYS I first knew about employee benefit schemes when working at a large corporate – they had staff bonuses in the form of Christmas meals and incentive bonuses linked to sales. I also worked for Financial Ombudsman, a civil service organisation with employee benefits such as free health and dental care. I took the core values from the Ombudsman organisation into my new business because they were so closely aligned with my personal core values. They had great values that everyone in the company knew and understood I wanted my staff to be able to do the same in my company. One of the platforms I used as a start-up company was perk box - when my employees signed up they got access to free break-down cover for their vehicle and mobile phone insurance, in addition, there were opportunities for discounts on trips to places like Alton Towers. As the employer, I paid a monthly subscription to perk box so that my employees could access these additional benefits. If you don’t already have an employee benefits scheme set up I recommend you start one as it can be a valuable tool for both staff retention and satisfaction. As an employer, it’s vital to recognise the role your team play in the success of the company and employee benefits are a great way to do this. BEST MOMENTS ‘I was, through a monthly subscription, able to offer my employees employer benefits’ ‘I Googled cheap business opportunities and cleaning company came up as an option so I went and purchased the cleaning products required and got started’ ‘It’s an important topic to talk about’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast www.perk.box.com ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. ‘#do one person at a time!’ In this highly entertaining episode, Khadija is with fellow entrepreneur Kamila Wszolek who is a Serviced Accommodation and cashflow creation expert, who is nominated for the ‘Young Entrepreneur in a Growing Business’ award in London. Kamila and Khadija are feisty and outspoken female entrepreneurs who are doing it their way and in this wide-ranging conversation discuss creating more wealth, getting the right team in place, jealousy, being strong, the traits of entrepreneurs, speaking your truth and dating someone like-minded. This is a great listen and has something for everyone who wants to keep it real and hear what Kamila and Khadija really think about being strong women in the world of social media and business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Often in business people copycat without giving any credit to the person who gave them the idea Keep it real, keep it honest, keep it authentic. If people think you are really strong they think they can say what they like about you. Lots of entrepreneurs have the same traits – they have a lack of patience; they lack empathy and they have tunnel vision about what they want to achieve -success. Emotional control is vital. It’s saying your truth but learning to recognise when it might turn into something else such as an argument. It’s important to say what you think but in a controlled way. You can be judgemental about the action but should never be personal. The most important thing is to learn to say ‘thanks for the feedback’ Launching The Kamila Show podcast SA is my speciality but there is a big world out there and I want to know more about it all My podcast will be all about business and ‘The Kamila Show’ will be all about everything I do in business including the highs and lows. The interviews will be across all areas of business as I love being out there having interesting conversations. For me, success is the network of people you surround yourself with. I have built my own family from the people who I have met through business. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’m a huge supporter of women but there is a lot of bitterness and jealousy from other women’ ‘I don’t accept excuses if you don’t want to f#cking do it then don’t’ ‘People hear you and it makes you an expert in your field which brings more financially as you can extend your reach as a mentor’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Kamila Wszolek LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. ‘There is no point in being an entrepreneur and staying under a rock’ Today’s episode all about entrepreneurship and what makes a successful entrepreneur. Khadija has loads going on with mentoring, events and running her businesses but having located a new business opportunity she wants to do it. Is this what makes her an entrepreneur? She explores the traits that are identified as being those of an entrepreneur and reflects on how for a long time she thought she was the weird one. If you are an entrepreneur and want to hear about Khadija’s’ journey to hugely successful entrepreneur and why she has now surrounded herself with other entrepreneurs so that she can help more people then listen in now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lots of people are content with what they have but I’m an entrepreneur and I have to keep striving for something more. I’ve made mistakes but I’ve also got it right and have achieved success. Now I have an ‘eye’ for it and can help other people in their businesses. I have made the mistakes other entrepreneurs make and taken on too much across different businesses. Now I know it’s about knowing how to systemise and create effective processes. We are programmed to have a job 9 – 5 or run a traditional business My one piece of advice for any entrepreneur is to not spend unless you need to, keep costs low using a virtual assistant and leverage everything you can. Money is not the prime driver for an entrepreneur and it’s not about the risk, entrepreneurs accept the risk because they have to they don’t seek it, they just accept it as part of the journey to creating a successful business. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’m earning good money but I’m an entrepreneur and this is the thing’ ‘There is always the person who p#sses on your bonfire or sh#ts on your parade’ ‘Why would I want to take on a new challenge when I’m already helping others and my current businesses are doing well’. Khadija recently spent a very pleasant evening hosting the Apprentice 2018 candidates, and now’s your chance to listen in on this amazing conversation. Hear from the likes of eventual winner Sian, Jasmine, Kayode, Kurran, Sabrina, and all your other favourites as they talk about how life has changed since then, and what they’re up to now! KEY TAKEAWAYS Camilla’s nut milk product has gone on to be stocked in 645 Holland & Barrett stores nationwide. Kayode has gone on to become a speaker, speaking at many engagements, plus launching a line of personal merchandise. Sian has been developing a line of summer-wear, which she has recently also adapted so as to fit in with the winter months. Kurran is simply enjoying life, and has turned his hand to acting. He is currently in rehearsals for a play called ‘Enron’ at the Putney Arts Theatre. Sarah Ann is multitasking more than ever, running a baby furniture business, and being a solicitor. Sabrina is organising tennis events, and also has begun to work as a children’s presenter and sports presenter. Her new podcast is called Blonde In Business. Jasmine was headhunted after the show and has landed her dream role in the corporate world. Reality TV personalities suffer a tremendous amount of abuse, as well as love. Most people don’t realise how detrimental this abuse can be to mental health. As part of Nick Bradleys 'entrepreneurial series', Nick is in conversation with our host, Khadija Kalifa! They discuss the journey Khadija has been on, what it is really like to be an entrepreneur and finding what you love then making it your vision. This fascinating podcast is a must for anyone who wants to really know what it’s like if you are ‘keeping it real’ listen in to find out more. KEY TAKEAWAYS My cleaning business was circumstantial, a necessity due to factors in my life at the time. From an early age, I knew that if I wanted something I had to work hard for it. I have a belief system, a mindset that drives me to be successful. It is important to me and I see it as my responsibility to make sure everybody in my family is looked after. Some people like to have a life of certainty, everything is more or less what you expect it to be until it’s not. Those are the people who try to keep it as level as possible but that’s not realistic. As an entrepreneur, there are always ups and downs but you have to take control of your future. We all have the same needs but require the balance between those needs to be different according to our individual characters. The psychology is important, you need to understand who you are and who you need around you to move your business forward successfully. You cannot do it on your own you need others around you to take on the other necessary roles within the business. Since being on ‘The Apprentice I have utilised opportunities for public speaking, networking and podcasts. It was like a business boot camp. I came out having learnt a huge amount about business and gained confidence in my own abilities. If I can help others learn from my mistakes then I am able to offer them something positive. People need to decide on a set of standards. When you start with that you can then retrofit those standards back to your business. If you don’t do that you won’t have the vision in place to move forward. Your mission to build an empire requires you to have a vision where others are working within it. If you are doing what you love, doing it becomes your passion. The empire then becomes part of the clarity, not the destination. Most people want to help people in the way that they can help. If you find what you are really special at then everything changes and there is no work anymore. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’ve always been a hustler’ ‘You’ve got to have a balance’ ‘If someone’s being stupid, I tell them they are being stupid’ ‘The entrepreneurial journey is within everyone but it’s a trigger that is switched in some of us’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. In this episode, Khadija is with Traci Cornelius, successful entrepreneur and host of the ‘Women Rockin’ Business’ podcast. They are both successful entrepreneurs and mums and in this entertaining and lively episode, they discuss their business journeys and the realities of managing children and running multiple businesses. They are both ambitious and share how this is received and perceived by others - is it right that if you are ambitious you are branded ‘bossy’? Find out what Traci and Khadija think is this enjoyable podcast collaboration episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being in business is not just learning about the business it’s about learning about yourself. When I was first in business it was all about working on your weaknesses but what you need to do is outsource the things you are not good at and focus on the things you are good at. Work on your strengths and get better. You can run more than one business successfully but not if you have the mindset of having to be able to do everything yourself. For a long time, I thought I needed to know everything but as a business, it’s not realistic and for the individual, it’s not achievable. Understanding that its ok to ask for advice is vital if you want to be successful in business. Entrepreneurs can become stuck because they believe they have to follow certain pathways We are conditioned to think about putting things into particular boxes but this can stop progression and development. As entrepreneurs failing is part of the learning process and finding the right thing. You have to develop the right skillset and be able to implement it effectively. You cannot be successful in business if you have a self-sabotaging mindset, you must look to change internally instead of looking for the answer externally. Business is a learning process and it’s ok to make mistakes and mess it up, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed it means you are learning. BEST MOMENTS ‘I began to look into being self-employed because I needed the flexibility’ ‘You can’t run a successful business if your mindset is that you have to be able to do everything’ ‘For a long period of time, I was able to earn money but my lack of self-worth massively impacted on my ability to be ultimately successful’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Women Rockin Business Podcast Next Step Aim High Community Facebook ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. ‘Cleaners are one of the most important parts in our business, they are our eyes and ears as the people who are first into a property when guests leave’ In this hybrid episode, Khadija is interviewing Kevin Poneskis successful Serviced Accommodation Investor and host of the ‘Serviced Accommodation Podcast’ whilst he simultaneously interviews Khadija about her cleaning business. They discuss what’s important when you are starting out in Serviced Accommodation and the important role cleaning staff play in the operation of any Serviced Accommodation Business. This is a great podcast which offers an opportunity to see things from more than one perspective, listen in and enjoy. KEY TAKEAWAYS What if you are thinking of getting into SA? A lot of people do SA in the wrong way taking on extensive risk through the acquisition of a SA property, which is a challenge when further down the line they decide SA is not for them. People should get trained in SA before they get into SA because there are a lot of moving parts to consider. The DEALS model is an effective pathway for serviced accommodation D – due diligence E - explore A – acquisition a SA L – logistics S – Scrutinise People invest huge amounts of their money without understanding what they are doing You need to get some training and a mentor. Learn from a mentor’s mistakes rather than making those mistakes yourself. Rent to SA is a great way of getting into serviced accommodation it is a model that requires much less investment. Working with cleaning companies as a SA provider Whatever you think you will need the cleaning company to do should be discussed in detail I have a fixed rate I don’t want to pay differing amounts based on the level of untidiness I prefer not to negotiate so working with a cleaning company who have experience of SA is helpful because they are able to establish an average time for a clean and know what working in the SA sector entails. Our cleaners are one of the most important parts in our business, they are our eyes and ears as the people who are first into a property when guests leave. If you are constantly giving your cleaning company a problem you are not going to keep them. You need to pick a good cleaning company and then work well with that company BEST MOMENTS ‘The worst thing that can happen with rent to SA is that you give it back’ ‘Build up your passive income when you are still in a job then you can live the life you want to live as an entrepreneur’ ‘I spent 24 years in the army as an entrepreneur, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit you have to find a way to be an entrepreneur’ ‘I’m fully aware that sometimes guests leave a property looking nice and sometimes it’s like a war zone’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast The Serviced Accommodation Property Podcast https://propertysoldier.co.uk/ ABOUT THE GUEST Your host Kevin Poneskis enjoys public speaking, travelling, exercising and keeping fit. Out of the mouth of babes… This week, Khadija keeps it real with her most special guest yet, her three year-old daughter, Taaliah Ellis, whose insights may surprise you. For instance, did mummy deserve to win The Apprentice? Is she a good singer? If she could be any animal, which would she be? And has Khadija finally met her match in the Yes/No game…? KEY TAKEAWAYS When she is older, Taaliah would like to be a ghost. Either that or Rapunzel. Pigs hold a lot of appeal because of the noises they make. Lions make interesting sounds, too. Taaliah’s favourite activites are gling to bed and putting things in the bin. Oh, and going swimming. Darcy, Lola , Florence and Mummy are among her closest friends. And Sicily is her favourite holiday destination. Taaliah Ellis is not a fan of appearing on podcasts, but she likes Keeping It Real With Khadija. Despite what you may have heard, Mummy is not good at cleaning. But she is good at singing and cooking. Taaliah is good at everything. This week, Khadija’s keeping it real with hairdresser to the stars, the fabulous Mr James Johnson, who joined this impromptu conversation backstage at the podcast launch, and who took some time between blow-drys to talk about his meteoric rise to the top, the importance of keeping it real, the mystery of green hair (!), and his biggest accomplishments to date... KEY TAKEAWAYS James has been in business for around two years, and has been instantly successful among celebrity circles. Success has come off the back of working hard. James has put in the time, and has worked hard to establish his name. The result is that he’s being sought out constantly by stars. Beginning as an apprentice, James had to endure long commutes, and menial tasks for minimum wage. When the time came, he took the risk and went it alone. The gamble paid off handsomely! To build yourself up in business, you need to take what you can and never say no. Each job leads to another. Humility is a wonderful quality, but never forget that you reach places in life and business because of who you are. It’s vital that we value ourselves and recognise our talents and qualities. Salons are dying out. People much prefer hairdressers to visit them at home. It’s more convenient and far more comfortable. BEST MOMENTS ’The swans wash your hands for you!’ ‘It’s not about how many agents you’ve got’ ’Never say no’ ’Treat the CEO the same as a janitor’ ‘You are actually kick-ass great’ ‘If the hair goes green, you shouldn’t be a hairdresser' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast James Johnson Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/iamjamesjohnson/?hl=en James Johnson’s Website - https://www.iamjamesjohnson.com ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. This week, Khadija keeps it very real with Mark Wright, who won The Apprentice in 2014, and who since then has gone on to found Climb Online with Lord Sugar, a digital marketing agency which has quickly become one of the most successful in the country. Mark has a fascinating story of rags-to-riches; an Australian backpacker who never had any ambitions in business, but by a series of serendipitous events, Mark found himself rocketing to the top of the business world, where he’s remained for the past eight years. In this special episode, Khadija talks to Mark about his rise to the top, his views on money itself, and his proven recipe for success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Running a business is very tough, and the more successful you get, the more the pressure mounts. But each obstacle is a lesson, and the further along you get, the better you become at dealing with them. The key to success is sacrifice - No matter what it is you want, whether it’s physical health, or financial freedom, you need to be prepared to work hard and sacrifice time and energy. Money and success follows attention. We should always be promoting ourselves. Start small. That attention will breed more, which breeds more. This knock-on effect will proliferate, and your success will develop in its wake. You are a reflection of the five people you spend the most time with. You inevitably pick up habits and qualities from those closest to you. If you’re in a job that doesn’t feel comfortable and enjoyable, then it’s not the right thing for you. Keep searching until you find your vocation, because you only get one shot at life. When you start a business, it’s worth focussing completely on that endeavour before you start trying to spread yourself too thin. Put all your eggs in one single basket. BEST MOMENTS ’That programme has been life-changing’ ’Money is pretty easy to make, and it’s not that important’ ‘Money follows attention’ ’There is such a thing as the right thing for you’ ‘When you get started in business, you put all your eggs in one basket - and you watch the basket' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Climb Online - https://climb-online.co.uk/team/mark-wright/ Mark Wright Twitter - https://twitter.com/Mark_E_Wright Mark Wright LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-wright-1658925a?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE GUEST Mark Wright won The Apprentice in 2014, and since then, has gone on to found and operate Climb Online, a hugely successful digital marketing agency specialising in SEO, Social Media, PPC and Creative Services. Kevin and Khadija dive into their humble beginnings and share learnings from how they got started in business and in property. Learn key lessons on how to start, grow and scale your property business and why starting out with nothing and getting creative and lead to huge opportunity. KEY TAKEAWAYS You need to just get out there and immerse yourself in the property world. Make sure you attend events, read books and listen to podcasts in order to educate yourself. Starting out in property is just like starting out a new job, you need to listen, learn and watch what’s going on and follow those that have done it before you. Most importantly, you need to get out there and meet people, find joint venture partners and opportunities for property investing. Don’t listen to BREXIT no one knows what’s going to happen there is a lot of uncertainty, but one thing is certain, people are always going to need properties and houses to live in. The population of the UK is growing every year and each year we do not have enough housing accommodation. In order to be successful, you need to surround yourself with mentors, coaches, peers and like-minded people. Fill your room with a power team of people that can help push you forward. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. You can’t learn everything so leverage others knowledge and expertise. Lots of investors are selling properties due section 24 and new taxations on mortgages why? Because investors own properties in their own names. This provides you with an opportunity to purchase properties at a lower value as part of a limited company. This week, Khadija is in conversation with celebrity Amy Childs, former star of The Only Way Is Essex, who since leaving the show has gone on to become a hugely successful entrepreneur. Amy discusses her journey from superstar to super-businesswoman, the origins of the “vajazzle”, her thoughts on motherhood, and the drive and ambition that has taken her to the top in business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Amy was very determined to succeed in business, even as far back as TOWIE. She was the first cast member to leave the show, because she wanted to devote herself full-time to business opportunities, instead of a celebrity lifestyle. Amy is involved with every part of her new pram collection, including design and marketing. Roma Prams have been a huge success. Juggling business and motherhood is incredibly difficult, but incredibly rewarding. Amy is driven to do better by the desire to give her children the best. Amy credits meditation as helping her to unwind. Life revolves around her children, but it is important to make time for yourself. After a decade of solid work, Amy plans to enjoy life now. This week, Khadija is keeping it real with Zameer Nazarali, the managing director of Simplify ER, a Human Resources consultancy company that simplifies HR requirements for business owners by supplying them with world-class expertise, compliance and guidance that allows both employees and their parent businesses to fee. secure, safe, and enjoy a rich and cooperative culture. Zameer joins Khadija today to discuss the ever-evolving world of HR, the issues that many companies and employees face, and practical advice on walking the fine line between being an employer and a friend. KEY TAKEAWAYS HR isn’t as much of a nightmare as people believe. There just seems to be so much bad advice and guidance out there, which Zameer and his team are gradually dispelling and correcting. Employers find it difficult to find a balance between treating their employees well and protecting themselves. Also, there are many areas of employment law that are unnecessarily complicated. In many cases, companies can unknowingly violate HR regulations by doing things they believe are right, but which actually contravene certain rules. It’s a very grey area, and must be examined on a case-by-case basis. Often it can be easier and cheaper to settle instead of involving solicitors. One of the most difficult elements to face as an employer is that we long to be friendlier to our staff in order to get the best out of them. But it can be hazardous if employees take these friendly gestures as a sign that you are a friend and not a boss. BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s bringing HR to life for them’ ‘We bring the objective thinking’ ‘We are holding someone’s life in our hands’ ‘We’ve got to tick the human box first’ ‘Let your employees know that you’re human too’ ‘Be friendly, but don’t be their friend' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Zameer Nazarali LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/zameernazarali?originalSubdomain=uk Simplify ER - http://www.simplifyer.co.uk/ourstory.html ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Life can move fast; too fast, sometimes! That’s why it’s always good to take some time to regard the day behind you and count your wins. Khadija is doing just that in today’s episode - keeping it real by showing gratitude and sharing her latest victories, no matter how large or how small. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes when people see you in glamorous surroundings, they get the impression that there’s little work going on. But that’s definitely not the case! Wins come in all shapes and sizes - from finally posting a parcel you’ve had hanging around the house, to making sure the dog smells like lavender - but a win is a win! There are moments, as a parent, when you cross that divide and connect with your child on their level. Not as a carer. Not as an authority figure. But as a friend. Those moments are invaluable to children. Small wins sometimes don’t seem relevant while they’re happening. But they are, and you should celebrate them all. BEST MOMENTS ’The small wins are what’s important’ ’Sorry if this is too much information. I hope you’re not eating your dinner!’ ‘You don’t realise how much those moments mean to your children’ ‘You should pat yourself on the back' VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Khadija is in conversation with Lauren Steadman, gold medallist para-athlete, para swimmer and strictly star and her sister, Ellen a successful up and coming hairdresser. They chat about dancing, being sisters, competing, veganism, vegetarianism and the flexitarian diet in this highly entertaining episode that has something for everyone, listen in and enjoy! KEY TAKEAWAYS Strictly Strictly was a life-changing journey I learned new skills and gained new friends, I miss it and wish I could do it all again. The glitz and glam along with the professionals who are so welcoming make it a very special experience. I like to do the whole dance routine at the start of the week and then break it down into sets, mapping out around the dance floor. There is a fine line between training to be an athlete and committing to public media work. Sport I have continued to live in Portsmouth, where I went to university because I have a great set up with good support such as physio which is hugely positive for my training. Over the next few weeks, I will be competing in both the World and European Championships and following a short break I will then be aiming for the 2020 Paralympics and will train without any break until the Games. I’ve always been competitive but there is more to life than winning. In life its generally dog eat dog and a race against everyone else but you need to succeed for yourself. What you achieve and what you want to achieve has to be for you. ‘If you want a great beard we are here to show you the road’ In this highly entertaining and informative episode, Khadija is talking to the Mo Bros, Keval Kunal and Savan three brothers who undertook the challenge of Movember in 2014 and on finding there were no great beard products were inspired to create their own. Mo Bro’s was born and is now in 78 countries across the world helping men to achieve the image they want with an amazing beard. There is something for everyone in this episode listen in and enjoy KEY TAKEAWAYS As brits, we are really good at having ideas but rarely take them through to execution Through our rivalry as brothers, borne from the challenge of Movember in 2014 we created a business which is now in 78 countries around the world. As a brand, we want to promote wellbeing for men overall and this involves eating well and exercising regularly. Over the last five years, we have continually worked to improve our offering and we believe we’ve now hit 5 stars. Being patchy, scratchy or unruly are the common challenges for men when growing beards We love being able to change the image of men and restore their confidence. Our why is being able to help change the image of guys who want to have a better lifestyle. We fix images rather than beards. Every business has a core purpose and ours is about empowering men and making them feel better about themselves. Being able to inspire and share some of the wisdom we have learnt from starting at the bottom and working through every tier of business is very important to us. If we can help other businesses we do it’s a way of us giving back to our community. Mo Bros has become a community-led brand. We no longer have to spend money on finding out what our customers want, our community drives the appetite and we just have to listen to what they want. Everyone has their own journey and if you start chasing what someone else is doing you’ll end up achieving their goals. In business, the first thing you should do is work out what your end goal is and then work backwards. We do what we do to make a difference we want to have a positive footprint to leave behind. In the big picture, we want to make a difference in the world we live in, we like to think we are a company born with a soul. If everyone aspired to make a small difference in every company around the world we would live in a much better place, we all have a responsibility to do that. We were never driven by money and there are things that are more important such as integrity, honour and the relationships we have with others. BEST MOMENTS ‘Beards are something that men can truly own’ ‘There is a reason men can grow a beard so let’s keep it and embrace it’ ‘We understand the grind and hustle that goes on behind the scenes’ ‘Charities are really good at making a difference but they are not always business-minded or entrepreneurial we are able to bolt on to an array of charities and make a difference’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Keeping it Real with Khadija Podcast Sales Genius book Fit for Purpose Leadership book MO Bros website ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Khadija is travelling, utilising her time so that she can talk to us about how to effectively utilise and manage time to be as productive as possible in your business and as an entrepreneur. In this engaging and honest episode, Khadija talks about the importance of having a team who have passion, being present with your kids and the reality of intensively building up a business from nothing to 30 employees. This is a very honest podcast Khadija is ‘keeping it real’ about what it is really like to be a successful entrepreneur and a mum. KEY TAKEAWAYS You must identify how you can effectively utilise your time to be as productive as possible. I’m a very last-minute person so having a great team around me is vital. My PA has helped to create great questions for guests on the podcast and is brilliant at producing interesting questions for the ‘yes, no’ game My other PA has been busy organising the podcast launch party. Together as a team, we raised in excess of £5,000 in sponsorship towards the party in only 5 weeks. My Virtual Assistant is based in the Philippines and helps me with the tasks I don’t have time to do, such as messaging on my social media platforms LinkedIn and Facebook. Without having a team, I wouldn’t be able to be so productive and have time to spend with my family. Sitting everybody round the table and eating is what is important to me and makes me happy. I love walking my dog, going to the gym and swimming every week, if it wasn’t for my support network I wouldn’t be able to do the things that are important to me. When I was building my business, it was massively time-consuming and it's now nice to have a passionate team who I can work with. when I was building my business, I had 30 members of staff, was always anxious, hardly slept and barely paid myself. I now know there are smarter ways to work When I started my business, I didn’t know my knowledge was worth something that I could lift people and inspire them with my motivational talks, I didn’t know how easy it is to sell things online In reality, you can have a business and use social media to be successful without vast numbers of employees and premises. Build a community and a support system and know you are not alone but there are smarter ways to work. Khadija is joined by the youngest ever apprentice finalist and founder of M+LKplus, Camilla Ainsworth. Khadija and Camilla Keep It Real by discussing her journey from Apprentice finalist to successful business owner and what she’s learnt along the way. They discuss the difficulties small business face and the mindset needed to succeed in taking your small business venture to the next level. Two flavours in the range that solidified M+Lkplus as a brand KEY TAKEAWAYS After the apprentice, Camilla was approached by Holland & Barrett who expressed an interest in launching her M+LKplus brand in stores nationwide. However, it took a lot of work and persistence to get this done. Now Camilla had launched a new flavour of M+LKplus into 645 Holland & Barrett stores successfully. As a small business dealing with large corporate brands can be difficult as you don't always know who you’re dealing with and who to contact. Camilla had some difficulty sourcing the vegan packaging she wanted and in-fact it did not make business sense, she has since sourced recyclable plastic bottle making her product event more environmentally friendly. Camilla has dealt with lots of challenges when launching her M+LKplus especially as it’s a product with a shelf life, packaging requirements and needs to be stored at a certain temperature. Camilla is now expanding her business acumen into sponsorship, public speaking, working with charities and going into local schools to conduct workshops. M+LKplus will soon be launching another product that will disrupt the market and is different from M+LKplus existing products. BEST MOMENTS “It’s still a novelty going into a shopping centre and seeing your product” Camilla regularly buys her own product and loves every second of it. “Don’t get caught up in the limelight and ensure you’re only doing the things that will benefit your business.” “I want to disrupt the market even further and I know what’s popular with the public” “People in the apprentice are a lot more clever than they’re given credit for” “My brand is all about women empowerment” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://mylkplus.com https://www.instagram.com/camillaainsworth/ ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Camilla is a huge advocator for women in business and has conducted workshops to facilitate start-ups. In addition to running her nut m+lk empire, Camilla was on last years ‘The Apprentice’ on BBC One and at just 22 she became the youngest ever finalist in the shows 14-year history! M+LKPLUS is here to disrupt the dairy-free alternative nut m+lk market! The product concept developed whilst our founder was in Australia working on a cow farm as part of the three-month regional work needed to obtain a second-year visa. Two weeks in a rash all over her arms and back emerged and Camilla discovered it was due to dairy intolerance. As she set out on a mission looking for an exciting dairy alternative, all she could find was plain almond milk full of sugars and additives with lacklustre branding. Thus, the idea to create a super-sassy ‘grab and go’ nut m+lk in a variety of different nut choices and flavours was created! There is nothing like it around, dairy alternatives are on a huge growth trajectory and that is why we exist!

Jump in and listen to an innovative, creative and gripping interview with Entrepreneur, CEO and Co-Founder of Expert Apps, Darren Galvin. Khadija and Darren discuss his journey from credit card debt and losing it all to growing an 8-figure business and changing the way mentors and influencers interact with their audiences and all in just over a year. Tune in to hear some valuable lesson in business and in life and discover the mindset changes you need to make in order to achieve your goals. KEY TAKEAWAYS Darren is business-driven, loves ideas and creation and is a father of five. His business journey for 10 years was a struggle and failed because of undercharging and the incorrect mindset. After leaving school at 15 Darren has always had a minimum wage job and therefore took that mindset into business and as a result, grossly undercharged. In May 2018 Darren along with his business partner Danny risked it all to create Expert Apps a software-as-a-service (SaaS) for businesses, coaches and niche entrepreneurs aiming to increase revenue, retention, referrals, reach and results (The 5 R’s). We created the prototype and at £4,200 we did an event to showcase the idea and as a result, people invested with us. The interest in the product increased and so did the price, we starting selling at £25,000 and ended with a first-year turnover of £500,000 gross profit. It’s a product for mentors, coaches, authors, influences so that they can have their own personal branded social networking app. It’s powerful because it’s helping them serve their clients at a level that’s never happened before. What we're creating here is evolving all of the time. We’re constantly evolving and learning. We started off in the property space and after viewing a property the pin dropped, why aren’t we using this app and this technology in other spaces and other industries. We started building and evolving and therefore created an app for industry experts, tailored to them. A Martial Arts apps, a Football app, each one bespoke to their industry and used by the expert themselves. Expert Apps are now crowdfunding and taking the business globally. We’ve had over 40 people, coaches, mentors, industry experts adopt our technology in the first year and that’s just the UK. So we’re crowdfunding and we want to take this global. There are 2.5million people in the US with ‘Coach’ in their title on LinkedIn alone, so we’re a very attractive investment opportunity for seed and venture capitalists so there’s growth to be had. When crowdfunding, make sure you get your timing right. In two weeks we’ve raised £425,000. But remember when crowdfunding you’re asking everyone to take a risk in your business, investors are liable and you need to make sure they’re investing for the right reasons and investing in the business owners themselves and not just the business concept or previous growth. You need to have a good team around you, between six of us at Expert Apps we’ve signed up 44 licenses, created this social media platform and it’s just the beginning. I would say we’re only 3% in our journey as a business and there’s no stopping us. You need to set yourself a goal and see where you will be one year from now. Ask yourself where you want to be one year from now. Tell yourself where you want to be and don’t listen to anyone else. There’s a lot to be said for the law of attraction. Money is much easier to obtain when you believe this. If you want something you need to believe it will happen. Not just say it because it’s what you’ve heard others say but believe it deep down and drive to get it. BEST MOMENTS “I had this burn in my stomach that I knew was right and I just went for it” “High-interest credit cards are not the way to start a business” “In the past, I didn’t understand mentorship and coaching, I used to think they were just failed, business owners” “The mentorship space itself is still lacking massively” “How many times in your life have you said ‘If only I could be cloned’? all you need is the Expert App to create a virtual version of you.” “In business, you don’t always have to stay on the same path, as long as you’re happy and focused” “I’m big on KPI’s and results. Assigning a set of measurements to track performance and generally, these are always too low. But with technology, we can serve our audience better” “We have just had an eight-figure valuation on our company” “I set myself a goal of standing on the stage as the owner of my own company and I achieved it. It was the most beautiful moment of my life” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://expertapps.online https://expertapps.online/crowdfunding/ https://expertapps.seedrs.com/ Rob Moore: I’m Worth More ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Tune in to hear Khadija interview former Apprentice rival, 2018 winner and owner of luxury swimwear brand sianmarie.com, Sian Gabbidon. Khadija and Sian discuss what it takes to be successful in business and how the advantages and disadvantages of scaling a business. Sian shares with you her experience from winning The Apprentice 2018 and securing Lord Sugars £250,000 investment, what it’s meant for her business and her personal life. Join in and learn business lessons from two successful female entrepreneurs and business owners. KEY TAKEAWAYS After winning The Apprentice 2018 Sian’s business grew massively. The change in scale meant that her workload both customer-facing and behind the scenes increased. It is easy for people on social media to look at Sian’s life and see it as a success, however, they do not see how much time and effort is going into making her a success. Upscaling the business as a result of winning the apprentice and securing investment has drastically changed Sian’s workflow. Prior to The Apprentice, Sian was working on her own time scale, now she is having to become more organised. A structure which she is learning to adapt too. Although Sian is fully involved in the business side of things, she is still designing. That is what she loves to do and she enjoys to create new designs for her brand. Although, sometimes these designs do not always turn out as she envisions them. A career-high was seeing Michelle Keegan wearing one of her swimwear pieces. Despite gifting different celebrities and influences, Sian was unaware that Michelle would be wearing one of her pieces. This solidified that she was doing a good job in the industry. Although things for Sian's business are on the up, she is often pressured by others to expand her business even further. Whilst this is something Sian envisions for her company's future, she also stresses the importance of building her brand and cementing themselves within the fashion industry. As a young girl, Sian was keen to have her own retail shop, however, since the expansion of social media and the ease of running a store online, her opinion on this has now changed. Although, she is now planning to have her swimwear stocked in already established retailers also. Despite saying that Beyonce has always been her idol, Sian is now thinking from a business perspective. In terms of brand awareness, Sian would love to see a member of the Kardashians wearing one of her pieces, from a business perspective, something like this would sell out her range. Sian is using her newfound success and fame to give back to her local community. As a young girl finding relevant work experience in the fashion industry was difficult. She has now given the opportunity to two young girls and they are able to get a real insight into how a business is run. Sian’s business is run from Leeds and finds it has not been necessary to relocate to London like once thought since she has her own contacts in the local area which she has formed solid business relationships with. A double-edged sword that comes with her fame and success, is the negativity she faces online with internet Trolls. Although at times she wishes to retaliate and defend herself. Her partner is quick to calm her down and it is soon forgotten about, she is focusing on being successful. BEST MOMENTS “Hustle until your haters ask if you’re hiring”. [when describing how Lord Sugar has helped her along her business journey] “Great to have a mentor and a board of people to give advice” “I am a businesswoman and designer. I need a team of people to help to get it out there” “It is a long process. It’s the first step of this crazy journey that was never going to happen. The retailer side. A new challenge that could lead to great things” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://sianmarie.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa. Join Khadija as she provides her most useful top tips and as always, keeps it real. KEY TAKEAWAYS Khadija's Entrepreneurial Do’/Don'ts. Do - Use Quickbooks or Xero as soon as you start trading, and manage your finances from the beginning. Do Not - Do payroll yourself. For as little as £50 per ten employees, you can outsource this from others. Do - Promote yourself on social media and use a reputable company if you require some assistance. Do Not - Spend all of your money on social media and marketing until you are earning enough organically. Do - Employ staff for your company's growth. Do Not - Employ staff unnecessarily. You should be aware of each staff member return on investment and the revenue they will each individually bring to your business. Do Not - Pay a £28k salary for an email manager or an administrator if your turnover cannot justify this. KEEP COSTS LOW. Do - Be ambitious. Do Not - Be deluded. If you are not earning a livable wage after 12 months, you need to find out the reason why. Do - Be friendly to your staff. Do Not - Be their friend. If you allow friendships to form, lines become blurred and boundaries are crossed. Keep those boundaries clear. Do - Be a company owner. Do Not - Be a managing director, if people management is not your strong suit. Outsource the inhouse people management if required. Do - Know everything that is going on in your business. Do Not - Do everything in your business. Do not become a one-person army. Leverage, outsource and know where your strengths lie. BEST MOMENTS “I am known for keeping it real and cutting the crap, my strong mind and no filter when establishing right from wrong has really helped me stand out in the entrepreneurial space” “ I am honest about how hard business and life can be as a mother in a relationship and more so I am about to share a few home truths and snippets of what I think will help you.” “Do not pay a 28k salary for email management/admin if your turnover cannot justify this. This can be outsourced and done well. Keep costs low. Kylie Jenner scenario a one-billion-dollar company 7 staff only 3 of them full time and a store on shopify” [In reference to her post on social media] “ DO post things like this on social media. DO NOT worry about accompanying it with a picture, it helps capture people's attention. In this introductory episode of Keeping It Real With Khadija, the star of the Apprentice 2018, business owner and mumpreneur, interviews best-selling author, world-renowned public speaker, multi-millionaire educator and co-founder of the Progressive group, Mr Rob Moore. Khadija and Rob ‘keep it real’ by discussing his highs and lows from over 17 years in business, as well as diving into the personal questions we all want to know! What type of animal would you be? What type of cake? And, who would you invite to your dinner party! Rob reflects on his time as a young entrepreneur and discusses the advice he would give to his younger self, all topped off with some quick-fire questions, this episode is not to be missed. Tune in today and Keep It Real With Khadija. KEY TAKEAWAYS As a businessman, if Rob were to be an animal he would be a bird of prey. Stating that he would not like to be an animal that could get preyed on, he would also like to have the freedom to fly. Rob discusses his creative outlets and how creativity in his life is a need for him and likens being creative as a therapy for him. Rob was recently paid by Progressive to do some painting, and although he is no longer doing this he is achieving his need for creativity through various different outlets such as his podcasts, and by creating crazy social media content. His love for being creative enables him to do something that nobody has ever done before. His introductions at The Property Super Conference were in a limerick format, something the world has never seen before. Rob Moore discusses the tips he would give his 20-year-old business thinking self. Focus: stop getting distracted by the party lifestyle and focus on your future. Drink and distractions are not good for business. It is okay to seek help and assistance from others. When he was younger he worked so hard, that sometimes mistakes happened. It is fine to seek assistance in the forms of PA’s or advisors in order to take the heat off. Never lose the desire and ability to think big. Do not let critics who do not think as big as you get into your head and shadow your vision. The importance of those who you surround yourself with. Rob discusses how sometimes, people may be trying to hold you back, but it is important to have the self-awareness to think, are they holding you back or are they just trying to protect you? Rob also tells of the importance of his business partner and his wife, and how they are often trying to protect him. They think of the downsides and keep him sane, and whilst this can be frustrating it is appreciated. It’s vital in business to not surround yourself with YES people, and those who will go along with anything you say as they do not want to challenge your ideas. Rob sees a challenge as a necessity, that in business you need to be challenged. He links being challenged as a business strength as it shows that people have the courage to challenge his ideas. Robs way of thinking and talking is very ‘Get to the point’. He admits that listening to others is the best gift you can give, however, he often takes a direct approach to those customers who are having one to one course with him. He often asks his clients to summarise their ideas into one sentence to get to the point of what they truly want to achieve. He would rather have his clients say that Rob challenged them in some ways, but that enabled their personal success in whichever way they desired than describe him as just a ‘nice guy’. They are paying him, to help them further their success and sometimes you have to challenge people in order to do so. Rob describes his impatience as one of his strengths. BEST MOMENTS “That was the dam opening to everything good that happened in my life from a business perspective” “My son was born on the day of our biggest Property Conference in 2011, to have my son born that night, that was very special” “A highlight for the business was breaking the public speaking world record” “When I’m a fan of something, a musician, a watch, a brand I am their biggest evangelist” “Still, to this day I am a case study for the local council” “I was arrested” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Keep it real with Khadija is an interview-based podcast hosted by Khadija Kalifa.
