Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Struggling to turn dense textbook prep into real coaching skill? We open the door to a smarter path—one that helps you pass your CPT and step onto the floor with confidence. Ashley leads a clear, practical tour through the Overhead Squat Assessment, the must‑know overactive and underactive muscle pairs, and the exact high‑yield topics NASM loves to test. You'll hear how to replace fear‑based posture rules with strong, simple cues that make clients feel capable and safe, and how the OPT model fits into real training without turning every session into rehab. We share the muscle map you need at test time and in the gym: mid to lower traps, glutes, VMO, TVA, and deep cervical flexors on the underactive side; lats, adductors, hip flexors, upper traps, and the gastroc‑soleus complex on the overactive side. Then we apply it to common compensations like knee valgus and arms falling forward so you can instantly connect what you see to what you program. You'll get the exact OHS setup, the five checkpoints, and why shoes‑off, multiple views, and consistent reps matter for clean reads.Ashley also lays out a streamlined study system: flashcards that pair each muscle with its tendency, process‑of‑elimination test tactics, and acronym mastery like LPHC to dodge trick questions. We talk realistic use of SMR and the 4‑2‑1 tempo, when stabilization is useful, and where progressive overload leads the way. Beyond the exam, we cover building a referral team with a registered dietitian and physical therapist so you can stay within scope, deliver faster results, and create new income streams while serving clients better.Ready to pass with less stress and coach with more clarity? Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Want a steady stream of five-star reviews, real referrals, and a calendar that fills itself without paid ads? We unpack a simple, ethical system that trades meaningful value for timely action, guiding clients to leave reviews while they're already engaged and excited. You'll hear how to personalize outreach, make the incentive irresistible, and remove friction so testimonials flow consistently—organically boosting your Google and Yelp rankings for “personal trainer near me.”We walk through the full lifecycle: crafting offers that clients actually want, scheduling comp sessions tied to reviews, and turning that moment into a clear referral ask that doesn't feel pushy. Then we layer in a light-touch nurture engine—weekly emails with nutrition tips, fiber and protein guidance, and real-world meal ideas—because most buyers convert after multiple touchpoints. The theme is simple: action beats perfection. Test now, get feedback, improve your scripts, and hit January with systems that already work.Programming gets equal time. If your gym runs 45-minute blocks, we show how to adapt the CCA framework without crushing your main lift. Learn to pair core patterns with complementary moves, protect rest for performance, and finish with a short, client-driven “fun” block that scratches the itch for sweat and novelty without sabotaging progress. We explain the psychology behind finishers, how to educate clients on rest and RPE, and how to stay creative inside real-world constraints so results stay front and center.Along the way, we invite you to tap into our community and hands-on seminars where we sharpen assessments, soft tissue work, programming, sales, and confidence. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!A 63-year-old pivoted careers and passed the NASM CPT by changing how he studied, not who he is. We open the playbook we used together: a clean path through the OPT model, phase-by-phase variables, and the corrective decisions that make both the test and client sessions click. If you've felt buried by jargon, this conversation pulls concepts into the light and connects them to simple choices you can make tomorrow. We start with stabilization and build to strength and power, linking tempos, rests, and intensities so you can see why each phase exists. Foam rolling shows up across the board, but stretching changes with the goal—static early, active-isolated through strength, dynamic in power. From there, we map common overactive muscles in the lower body to practical fixes: roll, stretch, then strengthen the underactive counterpart at a controlled tempo. You'll hear quick wins like how to handle heels lifting in a squat, what to do when shoulders elevate on a row, and why scaption and TRX rows keep showing up on smart Phase One programs.Clarity around planes of motion, muscle roles, and scapular force couples pays off fast. We break down how to spot the sagittal, frontal, or transverse answer in seconds, and how agonists, antagonists, synergists, and stabilizers guide exercise selection. We also hit vital signs that matter—hypertension thresholds, tachycardia as a referral trigger, and the wrist's radial pulse—as well as nutrition basics: carbohydrate ranges, saturated fat limits, protein's thermic advantage, and the role of insulin, growth hormone, IGF-1, and cortisol. Most valuable might be the test strategy itself: read the stem slowly, find the keyword like underactive or best strengthen, choose the option that advances the model, and move on. Paul's story proves it's not about age or memorizing a manual—it's about organizing knowledge that actually helps people. Ready to pass and start coaching with purpose? That's the heart of our conversation with Ayanna, a determined trainer who went from CrossFit and PT settings to a full-time role at Lifetime Fitness—after a botched remote interview and a bold, make-good workout that changed everything. We dig into the difference between reading a cert and becoming a coach. Live, interactive learning built her confidence: anatomy that matters, programming that works on the floor, and real-time feedback from a community of trainers at clubs like Lifetime and Equinox. You'll hear how case studies, avatars, and practical assignments created a loop of learn, apply, and refine that paid off when she faced a high-stakes practical. Instead of overcomplicating things, she stuck to assessments, clean progressions, and clear cues—proof that fundamentals beat flash.Once hired, the work shifted to member engagement. Ayanna shares how she walked the floor with purpose, offered quick wins without pressure, and used simple progressions to move people beyond stale routines. We compare the career math at different gyms, why Lifetime's early support helps new trainers thrive, and how pricing confidence grows when clients invest in 12 to 36 sessions. We also outline a repeatable plan: mirror top performers' activity, double your availability, script your first five minutes, and track client wins that turn into stories and referrals. If you're trying to break into a top club or rebuild momentum after a setback, this episode gives you a blueprint: apologize fast, add value immediately, ask for specific feedback, and keep going until you get a firm no. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why! From Rugby at Cal to Online SUF-CPT: Coach Caleb: caleb_tomasin You don't need a massive following to build a real coaching business. You need fundamentals, live feedback, and the courage to ship imperfect work. We sit down with Caleb to unpack how hands-on experience at a performance gym evolved into a focused online strength and conditioning model, especially for rugby athletes, and why simple systems beat flashy tactics when the goal is results. We walk through what credible programming actually looks like: a warm-up that matters, strength blocks that pair main lifts with explosive work, accessories that build resilience, and conditioning that respects the sport using zone two and interval days off-feet. Caleb breaks down his onboarding process—from fit and expectations to payment, setup, and rapid delivery—then shows how he tracks sets, reps, RPE, rest, and progress in-app. On nutrition, we start with real life: photo food journals to spot patterns and easy swaps, then macros for those ready to weigh and measure, all designed for adherence over perfection. The business side echoes the training side: reps build confidence. Free value content grows trust and reach. A single communication channel, midweek check-ins, and Sunday reviews keep clients engaged without chaos. We talk mindset, too—avoiding comparison traps, embracing long timelines, and serving people just a couple steps behind you. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!The fastest way to raise your rates isn't a new logo or a shiny app. It's raising your standard. We sit down with Dr. David Skolnik, a physical therapist who teaches trainers, to unpack why the floor of fitness education is so low—and the exact skills that move you from “gig job” to trusted professional with a full roster. We start with movement assessment that actually maps to training. Instead of relying on narrow screens, we break down how to evaluate squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, and locomotion in real time, under load, and with constraints that reveal what matters. Then we tackle pain without panic. Using a simple green–yellow–red framework, we show how to keep training productive during flare-ups, preserve capacity after surgery, and build client confidence by finding what can be trained today. The game-changer is collaboration with physical therapists. You'll hear how to speak the same language, what quality PT care looks like on the floor, and how to lead with reciprocity to spark a steady referral loop. We share examples of co-treating that maintain aerobic fitness, train the non-injured side, and support faster returns to full strength. Along the way, we draw a clear line between coaches who coach and influencers who post, and why hands-on practice still beats shortcuts when you want consistent results. If you're in Arizona, Dr. Skolnik outlines a new eight-week, in-person program in Mesa designed for working coaches who want to master assessment, pain navigation, and advanced programming. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Nicholas: Tik Tok Crag Monkey FitnessReady for a blunt look at what actually makes a great trainer? We sit down with Nicholas, a new coach who passed a major certification, stepped onto the gym floor, and realized the test didn't prepare him to handle real clients with pain, limitations, and shifting goals. His turnaround came from mentorship, relentless anatomy study, and the discipline to plan, pivot, and communicate clearly—all before chasing trends or complicated gear.We walk through his path from music major to fitness coach, the early shock of seeing clients arrive injured from unstable programming, and the mindset shift from “gain experience” to “earn competence.” Nicholas breaks down how he studied the knee—ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, supporting musculature—and used simple tools like a cable machine and a plyo box to design safe, effective sessions for a client who couldn't stand comfortably. Along the way, we cover the sales psychology that keeps training human: framing questions that respect autonomy, building trust through clear plans, and measuring progress clients can feel in daily life. You'll leave with a blueprint for faster growth: find a mentor, study one joint at a time, master regressions and progressions, choose a gym environment that lets you coach well, and skip the gimmicks. We dig into a practical system you can use today: start by hiring a top local pickleball coach, learn the game from the inside, and open a direct line to the exact clients who need you most. From there, we map out how to host simple prehab clinics at clubs, set up a referral structure that actually moves people, and demonstrate value fast with hands-on solutions for nagging pain.We go deep on what the sport demands and how to train for it. You'll hear how to prioritize rotation, frontal plane stability, and single-leg control without wasting time on irrelevant screens. We break down energy systems for short, explosive points and show where conditioning fits. For common issues like lateral elbow pain, we explain effective soft tissue strategies, smart isometrics, and progressive loading so clients feel relief and keep progressing. You'll learn how to package this knowledge into crisp, 60-minute sessions that build power, resilience, and confidence on the court. To make it concrete, we outline a full three-day framework for an intermediate player: lateral plyos with controlled landings, split-stance pressing and rowing, landmine anti-rotation, med ball throws and catches, goblet squats, carries, and mobility work like hip CARs and 90-90s. Every element ties back to the sport's demands and the client's goals. This week, a nostalgic Cancer Last Quarter Moon is a time to reflect on what we've accomplished in our recent New Moon goals. Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, glides into her elegant home sign of Libra, and promptly meets up with idealistic Neptune, unpredictable Uranus, and probing Pluto. Power issues rise to the surface as Pluto stations direct. The Sun and Jupiter bring a fresh start, but might bring up conflicts in all types of relationships. Words can get a little hurtful as Mercury and Mars come together in Scorpio. And a listener question about houses in the horoscope that are ruled by the same planet - how are they connected? With Venus and Uranus in the mix, expect surprising revelations and renewal. Pluto has been retrograde since May 4. [14:33] Venus trines Uranus (Tue., Oct. 14, 7:09 am PDT, 0º52' Libra-Gemini). [18:31] Sun Square Jupiter (Thu., Oct. 16, 10:43 pm PDT, 24º06' Libra-Cancer) Confidence meets challenge — a time to stretch beyond your comfort zone while keeping your balance. Excellent for self-promotion, creative pursuits, and reconnecting with loved ones. Sun's Sabian symbol: 25 Libra, All information in the symbol of one leaf. [21:12] Mercury conjunct Mars (Sun., Oct. 19, 11:51 pm PDT, 19º11' Scorpio). Sharp minds and sharper tongues. Productive for research and problem-solving, but watch out for heated words. Speak with care and precision. Sabian symbol: 20 Scorpio, A woman drawing two dark curtains aside. [23:02] Listener Question: Houses with the same ruler. Listener Michelle asks how life areas ruled by the same planet connect in the birth chart. April explains how a shared planetary ruler weaves together different houses — with an example from John Coltrane's chart (b. Sep. 23, 1926, 5 pm EST, Hamlet, NC, Placidus houses) that ties together creativity, study, and financial opportunity. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why! Most trainers don't fail for lack of passion; they fail because no one showed them how to turn knowledge into coached reps and coached reps into confident sales. We walk straight through the credential maze—C-tier certs like NASM/ACE/ISSA, nonprofit mainstays NSCA/ACSM, the CSCS and kinesiology degrees, and why applied internships and mentorships sit at the top when it comes to getting hired and keeping clients safe.We share the hard numbers managers see on the floor, the real reasons accreditation doesn't equal readiness, and the practical skills that move the needle: assessments that drive programming, modifications for common injuries, communication that calms nerves, and simple, ethical closing frameworks that make pricing feel natural. You'll hear how case-based learning (think: “Pickleball Pete” with lateral elbow pain) builds pattern recognition fast, why unsupervised “experience” can cement bad habits, and how structured supervision turns you into the coach clients trust with complex goals and limitations. If you're sitting on a C-tier cert right now, we outline an honest path: pass quickly, get floor time, stack hands-on seminars, and document real outcomes. If you're targeting elite clubs like Equinox or Lifetime, we show exactly what hiring managers look for—competence, composure, and a clear system for assessment and progression. Along the way, we unpack who actually owns the big cert brands, how marketing shapes perception, and why the best question isn't “Is it accredited?” but “Will this help me coach a real human on Monday?”Ready to build a career, not just collect acronyms? We take a sharper route: pass your NASM, ACE, ISSA, NSCA, or ACSM quickly, then turn that momentum into hands‑on skill, confident coaching, and a book of business that lasts. Our goal is simple—make the exam make sense, and make your training career real.We walk through the essentials you're most likely to see on the test—clinical red flags like hypertension and tachycardia, ACSM risk stratification, and the behavior change stages—then connect those terms to real assessments and training decisions. You'll decode planes of motion, open vs closed chain, and the roles of agonists, synergists, and stabilizers on big lifts like squats, pull-ups, presses, and rows. We map NASM's OPT phases and ACE's IFT model to actual programming: stabilization setups, strength endurance supersets, hypertrophy ranges, maximal strength rest periods, and power pairings that develop force and speed without guesswork. We also dive into performance testing and bioenergetics so your intervals match the sport—ATP‑PC efforts with long recovery, glycolytic repeats with targeted rest, and steady oxidative work when it counts. On the nutrition side, we keep you in scope and exam‑ready: macros, calories per gram, fiber targets, and practical protein ranges from sedentary to strength and mass phases. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Down 21–7 in the fourth? That's how most trainers feel when goals are vague, leads are random, and revenue wobbles. We flip that script with a practical playbook: define KPIs, run 90-day sprints, test weekly like an athlete, and hold public accountability so momentum has nowhere to hide. Think sports strategy meets small-business execution—clear metrics, tactical pivots, and simple scripts you can use today. We walk through a SWIFT-style review cadence that turns reflection into action: strengths to double down on, weaknesses you block time to fix, and the improvements, implementations, and innovations that compound results. You'll hear how to build a full book without waiting on algorithms—client appreciation invites that spark referrals, storefront intros that plant local roots, and discovery calls that convert because the questions are better. We even dig into pricing with confidence: tie rate increases to skill upgrades, invite clients to sponsor your growth, and communicate the plan with candor and care. There's a reason great coaches obsess over numbers. We break down the KPIs that matter for trainers—leads per week, show-up and close rates, ARPC, content-to-call conversion—and show how to read them like a dugout watches pitch counts. You'll leave with a 90-day roadmap: daily story prompts with polls, a DM follow-up system, a weekly beta test, and a review cycle that makes iteration inevitable. Coach Mads shares her extraordinary journey from battling anorexia as a teenager to becoming a successful gym owner with a thriving boutique fitness business. The path wasn't straightforward. After getting her ISSA certification during COVID when gyms were shuttered, Mads discovered the stark gap between textbook knowledge and real-world application. "You get into the real-life gym and you're like, what the heck am I doing? I don't know how to apply this at all," she reveals with refreshing honesty. This experience shaped her determination to create something better.Moving 2,000 miles from Canada to Washington, Mads worked briefly at the YMCA before taking a leap that most trainers wait years to attempt – opening her own facility. Her 2,000-square-foot private boutique gym now serves a clientele that's 90% women, providing a safe haven from the judgment often felt in traditional gym environments. "We're trying to break that stigma with our gym," she explains, describing how every potential member must meet her personally before joining. What makes Mads' approach particularly savvy is her focus on multiple revenue streams – independent trainers paying rent, personal training services, memberships, and potential future additions like supplements and merchandise. This diversification strategy provides crucial stability in an industry where 81% of gyms fail within five years. The challenges of solopreneurship weigh heavily at times. "Being a solopreneur is one of the hardest parts because I do everything myself," Mads admits. Yet she's tackling this by building a reliable team and creating systems that don't require her constant presence, with plans to expand into a collaborative wellness space including other health professionals.Perhaps most inspiring is her mindset towardWant to ask us a question? Sean's journey will inspire anyone feeling trapped in their career. After years in construction, Sean found himself drained by his blue-collar job despite doing everything he was "supposed to" do – putting on boots each morning and providing for his family. A chance encounter with John Ratey's book "Spark" ignited something inside him, beginning a transformation that would completely reshape his life. The path wasn't straightforward. Sean candidly shares his frustrations with traditional fitness certification, describing moments of heart-pounding anxiety when confronted with textbooks filled with jargon he couldn't understand. But everything changed when he discovered a practical approach to training that focused on real-world skills rather than abstract concepts. This breakthrough gave him the confidence to approach gym owners and stand out in an industry where 90% of new trainers fail within their first year. Now earning more than his construction salary while experiencing unprecedented freedom and fulfillment, Sean finds his greatest rewards in his clients' victories – from the former hockey player who can finally fit into his college jacket again to the budget-conscious client proudly purchasing her first dumbbell. More importantly, his career change has given him precious mornings with his five-year-old son, moments he previously sacrificed to his demanding job.For anyone contemplating a career change, especially those in their 40s or 50s who think it might be too late, Sean offers powerful advice: "We're here one time on this beautiful earth. Mars enters Scorpio, one of the signs of his rulership, and is strengthened for his hard interaction with Pluto in Aquarius. The Sun enters the Libra, and its equinox initiates autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. The Sun opposes sensitive Neptune and combines forces with Uranus and Pluto. And a listener question about self-care and your birth chart. Scorpio is one of the strongest signs for Mars, fierce on behalf of those in need, and good for work, especially research projects and resolving conflicts. [3:26] The Sun enters Libra (Sep. 22, 11:19 am PDT, until Oct. 22). This marks the autumn equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, vernal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. Focus on cooperating with others, avoid excess, and get your life in balance. [5:53] The Sun opposes Neptune (Sep. 23, 5:53 am PDT, 0°45' Libra-Aries). When the Sun is in aspect to Neptune, sensitivity is high, clarity low. Safeguard your health. Good for artistic expression and spirituality exploration. [7:21] Moon Report! There is no major lunation this week, but let's look at the Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On Tues. Sep. 23 (9:02 am PDT), the Moon squares Jupiter in Libra-Cancer. It's VOC for 16 hours, 58 minutes, then enters Scorpio on Wed. Sep. 24 (2 am PDT). There could be a conflict concerning your family and how they get along with your significant other. [12:00] The Sun trines Pluto on Tues, Sep. 23 (11:05 pm PDT) at 1°27' Libra-Aquarius. Everything is intensified, and we don't feel neutral about anything. This can be an interesting day for powerful opportunities. [13:56] Mars squares Pluto (Sep. 24, 4:51 am PDT) at 1°27' Scorpio-Aquarius. Mars is on the Sabian symbol 2 Scorpio, A broken bottle and spilled perfume. Pluto is on 2 Aquarius, An unexpected thunderstorm. In this eye-opening conversation with Dr. Chris Hughen of E3 Rehab, we dismantle these misconceptions and explore what the research actually tells us about human movement.Dr. Hughen shares compelling evidence that challenges common practices like text neck warnings and overhead squat assessments. Despite what many textbooks teach, research consistently shows that static posture doesn't predict pain or injury risk. Your forward head position while texting or "less than perfect" squat form isn't setting you up for inevitable pain—your body is far more resilient than that.We explore how elite athletes like Usain Bolt and Olympic weightlifter Dmitry Klokov excel despite having movement patterns that would fail standard assessments. This natural variation demonstrates that human bodies find unique, individual solutions to movement challenges rather than conforming to arbitrary standards. Most importantly, we discuss the psychological impact of movement correction on clients. When trainers constantly point out "flaws" and focus on "fixing" clients, they often create feelings of fragility and fear. Instead, Dr. Hughen advocates for an approach that builds confidence through exploration, guided discovery, and positive reinforcement. For trainers and fitness enthusiasts alike, this conversation offers a refreshing perspective that celebrates human resilience and adaptability. What happens when a cricket career ends due to injury? For Jaisurya, it became the beginning of a transformative journey into the world of personal training. In this captivating conversation, Jai reveals how his path shifted from representing Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in cricket to becoming a certified personal trainer helping others transform their lives. The turning point came after completing his MBA in data analytics when Jai ventured into sports event management, working with prestigious tournaments like IPL. During this time, he experienced a moment he describes as "speechless" – witnessing MS Dhoni enter Chennai's stadium to thunderous applause that literally shook the building. Despite these exciting experiences, something was missing until a friend introduced him to Show Up Fitness CPT.Jai offers a candid look at the fitness industry in Chennai, where many trainers lack proper education and focus solely on workouts without understanding fundamental anatomy or movement patterns. He contrasts this with his experience at Show Up Fitness, which created a supportive community where continuous learning is valued. "This industry is all about patience, constant learning, and consistency," Jai emphasizes, noting how these qualities transfer perfectly from his sports background.Perhaps most touching is Jai's story about his parents' journey from skepticism about his career choice to pride when they witnessed firsthand the impact he was making on clients' lives. For anyone considering a fitness career or looking to understand what separates successful trainers from those who quit within the first year, Jai's insights provide invaluable guidance.Whether you're a cricket fan, fitness enthusiast, or someone considering a career transition, this episode delivers powerful reminders about the importance of communitWant to ask us a question? Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Ever wondered how to properly design a fitness program for someone with metabolic syndrome? Meet "Metabolic Mary," our 44-year-old avatar client who presents with multiple risk factors including hypertension, elevated resting heart rate, and poor overall fitness. This episode dives deep into the thoughtful approach required to help clients like Mary succeed when standard training methods might do more harm than good. The journey begins with understanding what metabolic syndrome actually is—having at least three of five specific health markers that significantly increase risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. We explore each marker in detail, from waist circumference thresholds to blood pressure parameters, giving you the knowledge to recognize these conditions in your own clients. What makes this episode particularly valuable is the stark contrast drawn between typical trainer approaches and the more sophisticated method taught at Show Up Fitness. Rather than annihilating a deconditioned client with high-intensity circuits on day one (virtually guaranteeing they won't return), we demonstrate the "Goldilocks approach"—programming that's not too hard, not too easy, but just right for the client's current abilities. The conversation extends beyond exercise selection to cover crucial professional skills: how to approach physicians for medical clearance, positioning yourself as distinct from "CrossFit weirdos," and addressing client fears (like Mary's concern about "bulking up") with empathy rather than dismissal. You'll learn specific progression models using CA (compound-accessory), CC (compound-compound), and CCA (compound-compound-accessory) formats that can be modified based on client response.Whether you're a new trainer struggling with program design or an experienced professional looking to refine your approach to special populations, this episode provides both the science and art of effective training for metabolic syndrWant to ask us a question? The Sun's face-off with Saturn dominates the Virgo New Moon Solar Eclipse at the intense 29th degree. And there is so much to cover in the sky this week that there was no time for a listener question - but look for an answer to a listener question about a Mercury Retrograde-ish eclipse, on Big Sky Astrology's YouTube channel! Plus: Devil's advocacy, beautiful necessities, and things we'd prefer to forget. Read a full transcript of this episode. It's eclipse season! Sep. 15, 8:04 pm PDT, 25º51' Leo-Libra), unlocking inspiration, stirring attraction, and providing financial motivation. The Sabian symbol for Venus is 26 Leo, A rainbow, and Mars is on 26 Libra, An eagle and a large white dove turning one into the other. [4:03] Mercury opposes Saturn (Wed. Sep. 17, 10:47 am PDT, 28º46' Virgo-Pisces), on the Sabian symbols 29 Virgo, A man gaining secret knowledge from a paper he is reading and 29 Pisces, A prism. Reviewing our goals and the stories we tell about them. Delays in travel possible, along with discouraging news. [6:10] Mercury enters Libra on Thu. Sep. 18 (3:06 am PDT, through Oct. 6), and communication is characterized by grace, balance, and tact. An excellent time for negotiations, handling difficult interpersonal situations, persuading others to see things your way. Avoid argumentativeness. [7:35] Mercury opposes Neptune on Thu. Sep. 18 (3:01 pm PDT, 0°53' Libra-Aries). Strong intuition, ideal for artwork, love, spiritual pursuits, but less suited for logic or analysis. [8:29] Mercury trines Uranus on Thu. Sep. 18 (9:52 pm PDT, 1°23' Libra- Gemini). The desire to feel free to say exactly what's on our mind can lead to ill-advised blurting, but it's also a transit of awakening and clarification. [9:50] Mercury trines Pluto on Thu. Sep. 18 (11:27 pm PDT, 1°30' Libra-Aquarius). Mercury with Pluto brings up stark truths we need face. This is a transit of profound insight if we're willing to confront those realities. [11:20] Venus enters Virgo on Fri. Sep. 19 (5:39 am PDT, through Oct. 13). Venus is traditionally in her fall in Virgo because she is exalted in the opposite sign, Pisces. Venus in Virgo favors healthy food, tools, and organizational supplies. Socially, Venus here favors casual, low-key get-togethers, ideally outdoors. [12:55] Venus squares Uranus on Sat. Sep. 20 (8:41 am PDT, 1º22' Virgo-Gemini. The Sabian symbol for Venus is 2 Virgo, A large white cross upraised; Uranus is on 2 Gemini, Santa Claus filling stockings furtively. Sep. 21 (12:54 pm PDT, at 29º05' Virgo, and it's a Solar Eclipse. The Sabian symbol for this eclipse point is 30 Virgo, A false call unheard in attention to immediate service. Communication, thoughts, and even movement have extra power around this time. [18:20] The New Moon point is trine Uranus, so the changes associated with eclipses could arrive suddenly or unexpectedly. An eclipse that's close to the South Node in Virgo emphasizes endings, release, letting go, being a little bit too perfectionistic or judgmental. Move toward the Pisces North Node's acceptance and willingness to go with the flow. [19:35] Solar Eclipses repeat on about the same day of the year and close to the same degree of the zodiac every 19 years. Previously, there were Solar Eclipses near this point on Sep. 22, 2006, and on Sep. 23, 1987. [20:34] This is the New Moon in a lunar phase family cycle (LPFC) that will unfold over the coming three years. And the Last Quarter Moon (final action point) is on December 20, 2027, at 28º14' Virgo. [22:39] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On Tue. Sep. 16, the Moon in Cancer trines Saturn (8:14 pm PDT), goes VOC for 2 hours, 6 minutes, and then enters Leeeeeooooo (10:20 pm PDT). Fortify your living space via a cleansing ritual. [23:48] On Fri. Sep. 21 (12:54 pm PDT), the Moon in Virgo conjoins the Sun. It's VOC for 1 hour 47 minutes and enters Libra (2:41 pm PDT). This is the New Moon Solar Eclipse. “Devotion” is the word for this VOC Moon period. [25:32] This week's listener question is available as a YouTube video! Keep those questions flowing! This week, Venus enters the glamorous sign of Leeeeeeoooo and makes inspiring aspects to Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, plus a highly charged opposition to Pluto. Uranus and Neptune connect in their first major aspect since 1993, and the Sagittarius First Quarter Moon focuses on teaching and moving forward into the future. And coming up next week, the 6th Annual Podathon! Plus: Futuristic drawings, things you can't undo, and a little pizazz! Read a full transcript of this episode. Have a question you'd like answered on the show? Email April or leave it here! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Love the show? Make a donation! Timestamps [2:20] Venus enters Leo on Mon. Aug. 25 (9:27 AM PDT), and will be there through Sep. 19, 2025. It is a sunny, life-affirming position for Venus, but it makes a lot of important aspects this week to heavy planets, bringing some shadows to Leo's sunshine. [3:55] On Mon. Aug. 25 (5:56 PM PDT), Venus trines Saturn at 0º25' Leo-Aries. Saturn tempers Venus in Leo's extravagant tendencies. Acknowledge your responsibility in choosing partners and cultivating relationships. Don't be afraid to ask for help! [6:09] Venus sextiles Uranus (Tue. Aug. 26, 1:58 pm PDT) at 1°25' Leo-Gemini. New ideas appear, especially related to money, values, or relationships. New people may enter the picture and shake you out of your routines. [7:36] Venus trines Neptune (Tue. Aug. 26, 3:18 pm PDT) at 1°29' Leo-Aries. This aspect invites us to see the beauty in others, regard the world with a little more tenderness. Neptune also elevates Venus' creativity with inspiration, even a touch of spirituality. Together, Venus' sextile to Uranus and trine to Neptune remind us that love, beauty, and creativity are best when they open doors to inspiration and into connection with others. [8:49] Venus opposes Pluto (Tue. Aug. 26, 10:54 pm PDT) at 01°51' Leo-Aquarius. Challenges in relationship and finances. Find value in what cannot be taken away. This transit can feel intense but fortunately, it passes quickly. Don't do things that you can't undo. It's only one day, and by tomorrow, things could look quite different. [11:20] Uranus sextiles Neptune (Thu. Aug. 28, 5:14 PM PDT) at 01º26' Gemini- Aries. This is the first of five exact sextiles that they will form to each other between now and June 2027. Uranus' last major aspect to Neptune was a conjunction in 1993, between 18-19° Capricorn (Feb. 2, Aug. 20, Oct. 24, 1993). [13:28] Uranus in Gemini sextile Neptune in Aries, blends inventive thinking with visionary drive. Think outside the box, not just for the sake of novelty, but to serve an inspired vision of the future. This energy is great for breakthroughs in language, technology, art, or activism. If you stay grounded, this transit is powerful for creativity, spirituality, social change and for taking those first steps toward a new world. [15:45] Moon Report! The Sagittarius First Quarter Moon is on Sat. Aug. 30 (11:25 PM PDT) at 08º07' Sagittarius and Virgo. This is our first action point following the Aug. 22 Virgo New Moon (the first of two; the second is on Sep. 21, and is a Solar Eclipse). You don't have to have everything figured out before you begin, just start the journey and trust that the road will open as you go. The Sabian symbol for this First Quarter Moon is 9 Sagittarius, A mother with her children on the stairs. The Sabian symbol for the Sun is 9 Virgo, A man makes a futuristic drawing. [18:16] This is the First Quarter (first action point) in a lunar phase family cycle (LPFC) that began with the New Moon in Sagittarius on Nov. 30, 2024, at 9º32' Sagittarius. The Full Moon (awareness point) of this LPFC will occur on May 31, 2026, at 9º55' Sagittarius, and the Last Quarter phase (last action point) is on Feb. 27, 2027, at 9º22' Sagittarius. [19:46] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On Mon. Aug. 25 (6:53 AM PDT), the Moon in Virgo sextiles Venus. It's VOC for only 15 minutes, and then the Moon enters Libra (7:08 AM PDT). Cancer likes comfort food, and Virgo likes efficient and healthy nutrition. This Void-of-Course Moon period begins around breakfast time on the west coast of the United States, so this is a great day to start a new ritual of eating a really delicious and nutritious breakfast. [20:55] On Tue. Aug. 26 (7:06 PM PDT), the Moon in Libra sextiles Mercury. It's VOC for 23 hours and 21 minutes, then enters Scorpio on Wed. Aug. 27 (6:27 PM PDT). Leo gives voice to the desire for balance and equality that the Moon in Libra craves. Create a habit of making decisions by using equal parts mind and heart. [22:06] On Fri. Aug. 29 (5:47 PM PDT), the Moon in Scorpio squares Mercury. It's VOC for 13 hours, 17 minutes, and enters Sagittarius on Sat. Aug. 30 (7:04 AM PDT). If someone gets under your skin during this VOC Moon period, try very hard to keep hurtful feelings to yourself. Funnel your anger into some other enterprise, such as vigorous exercise habits, which can help keep the drama at bay and your body strong. [23:22] There will be a pause on listener questions this week and most likely next week due to the 6th Annual Podathon! They will return the week after the Podathon, though, so by all means, keep those questions flowing! Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why! What does it take to build a thriving personal training business that generates over $13,000 in just 20 days? Cody Maynard returns to the Show Up Fitness Podcast to reveal exactly how he's projecting a $150,000 annual income after only eight months as an independent trainer. The secret isn't complicated marketing schemes or sales tactics. Instead, Cody shares how continuous education has transformed his career, describing how he immediately implemented knowledge from recent seminars into his training sessions. "You get that 'whoa' from the client and you're like, yeah, all right, paid off there," he explains, highlighting how investing thousands in education creates immediate returns through improved client retention and referrals.Unlike many trainers who spend hours creating complex workout programs, Cody focuses on fundamentals. His assessment process combines careful listening with movement analysis and a mini-session that showcases his expertise. This comprehensive approach eliminates sales pressure because clients immediately recognize his value. His programming philosophy emphasizes progressive overload rather than constant novelty: "If it's not broke, don't fix it," he says, noting how clients appreciate consistency when they're seeing results.Perhaps most revealing is Cody's ability to adapt his communication style to each client's preferences, from the early morning client who barely wants conversation to the high-energy afternoon sessions. This authentic, personalized approach explains why he rarely encounters price objections despite charging premium rates.Whether you're an established trainer looking to increase your income or just starting your fitness career, this episode provides a masterclass in building a sustainable training business through education, competence, and genuine client connection. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Ever wondered why so many personal trainers struggle despite having "gold standard" certifications? This eye-opening exploration pulls back the curtain on the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) - the fitness industry's equivalent of McDonald's.Founded in 1987 by Dr. Robert Goldman and developed by respected professionals like Dr. Michael Clark, NASM once represented cutting-edge fitness education. Today, after multiple corporate acquisitions (Ascend Learning in 2009, then Blackstone in 2017), it's become a marketing powerhouse with 1.5 million certified trainers worldwide. But quantity doesn't always equal quality. We dive deep into NASM's transformation from respected education provider to corporate giant, examining both its strengths (global recognition, gym employment opportunities) and critical limitations. The certification offers minimal business training, relies on outdated biomechanical concepts like upper cross syndrome (largely debunked by physical therapists), and features questionable programming recommendations. Most troublingly, newly certified trainers face a harsh reality: $9-12 per half-hour pay at big box gyms while clients are charged $50+, demanding split shifts, and pressure to sell supplements they may not believe in. It's no wonder 90% of trainers quit within their first year.True success in fitness requires more than passing a multiple-choice test. Elite trainers need mentorship, hands-on experience, business acumen, and professional networks – elements textbook certifications rarely provide. Whether you're considering becoming a trainer or looking to level up your career, understanding the limitations of standard certifications is crucial to avoiding the common pitfalls of the fitness industry.Ready to move beyond basic certifications? Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!The hidden truth behind successful personal training isn't just exercise knowledge—it's mastering the art of sales. After surveying countless fitness professionals about why trainers quit the industry, one answer stood out: the inability to sell their services effectively. Most trainers make critical mistakes during the sales process. They talk excessively when they should be listening, make conversations self-centered rather than client-focused, and struggle to convey their true value. The result? Potential clients walking away with "I'll think about it" instead of signing up for transformative training packages. The core issue is a confidence problem rooted in competence gaps. Trainers who struggle with sales often lack depth in their professional knowledge and network. They can't fluently discuss anatomy, haven't attended hands-on continuing education, and don't have relationships with allied health professionals like physical therapists and registered dietitians. These deficiencies create subtle insecurity that clients can sense during consultations.Through real-world examples—including the story of an executive client who paid $8,400 for a month of training and brought a $400 whiskey bottle as a thank-you gift—this episode reveals the psychology behind successful fitness sales. You'll learn practical techniques for assessment processes that convert, setting clear expectations, handling objections confidently, and building genuine relationships with clients. The most transformative action you can take today? Record yourself delivering a sales presentation, analyze your performance objectively, and challenge yourself to approach potential clients with confidence-building exercises. Sales isn't something you can avoid as a trainer—it's a fundamental skill that, when mastered, allows you to help more people transform their lives while building the career you deserve.Want to ask us a question? This week, Mercury turns direct and enjoys not one, but two sextile opportunities with Mars. Saturn makes the second of three liberating sextiles to Uranus, and Venus and Jupiter make a delicious conjunction in Cancer. The Taurus Last Quarter Moon is a time to make some final decisions on those Leo New Moon wishes, and April answers a listener's question about the Midheaven in the Whole Sign House system. Aug. 11 (12:30 AM PDT) at 4º14' Leo. Mercury began its retrograde period on July 17, 2025, at 15°34' Leo. While communication and travel may start to smooth out now, it's probably a good idea not to let your guard completely down just yet. Mercury also rules merchants and trade, so this can be a day when something shifts in your business or financial matters. Mercury turns direct on the Sabian symbol 5 Leo, Rock formations at the edge of a precipice. [3:51] Saturn sextiles Uranus on Mon. Aug. 11 (8:33 PM PDT) at 1º12' Aries-Gemini. This is the second of three sextiles that Saturn will make to Uranus. The first was back on April 4, 2025, and the final one in the series comes on Jan. 19, 2026. Saturn is a rule maker, Uranus a rule breaker. Uranus presents an opportunity for liberation. [5:52] Venus conjuncts Jupiter on Mon. Aug. 11 (10:30 PM PDT) at 14º03' Cancer. Jupiter is exalted (especially strong) in Cancer, and the Sabian symbol for this degree couldn't be more perfect: 15 Cancer, A group of people who have over eaten and enjoyed it. [7:55] This week, Mercury will make two separate sextile aspects to Mars. The first is on Thu. Aug. 14 (7:05 PM PDT) at 5º05' Leo-Libra. Energetic Mars has your mind working overtime. Watch out for arguments. [10:53] The second Mercury-Mars sextile Mars is on Sunday, Aug. 17 (10:33 PM PDT) at 7º04' Leo-Libra. Mind your words, channel any anger or frustration constructively. These Mercury-Mars sextiles bring sharp, energized, focused communication. [11:58] Moon Report! The Taurus Last Quarter Moon is on Fri. Aug. 15 (10:12 PM PDT) at 23º36' Taurus-Leo. It's the last action point following the Leo New Moon on July 24, 2025. This is a terrific Last Quarter Moon to take concrete steps toward your goals. Take stock, focus on what matters, and use this time to bring something meaningful into reality. [14:10] Lunar Phase Family Cycle (LPFC). This is the Last Quarter (final action point) in an LPFC that began on May 19, 2023, at 28º25' Taurus. The First Quarter (first action point) in this LPFC came on February 16, 2024, at 27º25' Taurus. The Full Moon (awareness point) in this LPFC was on Nov. 15, 2024, at 24º00' Taurus. This is the time to bring this LPFC to completion and place it into context. [16:22] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. The first VOC Moon period began last week on Sun. Aug. 10 (11:55 PM PDT), when the Moon made a trine to Jupiter and was VOC for 1 day, 3 hours and 38 minutes. It enters Aries this week on Tue. Aug. 12 (3:33 AM PDT). This is an emotionally healing time. Initiate a habit of expressing kindness and nourishment to all, and that includes yourself. [17:33] On Wed. Aug. 13 (3:54 PM PDT), the Moon in Aries trines the Sun. It's VOC for 14 hours, 28 minutes, and enters Taurus on Aug. 14 (6:22 AM PDT). Initiate a habit of practicing gratitude just for being alive on the planet. [18:37] On Fri. Aug. 15 (10:12 PM PDT), the Moon in Taurus squares the Sun. It's VOC for 10 hours and 49 minutes, then enters Gemini on Aug. 16 (9:01 AM PDT). The Moon in Taurus and the Sun in Leo share an appreciation for the finer things in life, but not everyone has millions of dollars to spend on fancy trinkets. Embrace the concept of “quiet luxury”, meaningful but inexpensive indulgences. [20:40] Listener Catherine asks about the Midheaven in the Whole Sign House system. Yet the fitness industry continues pushing ineffective "gentle" approaches that fail to provide adequate stimulus for meaningful adaptation. This episode dismantles outdated training myths for older adults and presents a comprehensive framework for designing strength programs that truly address the physiological changes of aging: sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) and dynopenia (loss of power). Using a 70-year-old retired professor as our case study, we walk through exactly how to assess, design, and progressively overload a training program that builds functional strength where it matters most. You'll discover why motor unit recruitment through appropriate loading strategies is essential for bone remodeling—specifically, resistance training with weights that challenge clients in the 8-10 repetition range. We explain why popular balance training methods using unstable surfaces fail to produce optimal results compared to properly designed unilateral strength exercises that challenge stability in the frontal plane. The episode provides a detailed three-day-per-week program with specific exercises, sets, reps, and progressions that can be immediately implemented with older clients. You'll learn assessment strategies that evaluate relevant movements like sit-to-stand rather than irrelevant ones like overhead squat, and understand how to incorporate cognitive challenges that stimulate brain-derived neurotrophic factor for improved neuroplasticity.Beyond program design, we address crucial considerations like increased protein needs for seniors and practical coaching strategies that build confidence while challenging clients appropriately. Jake Schum's remarkable journey from NFL punter to elite fitness coach offers a masterclass in resilience and reinvention.Jake takes us through his winding path to professional football—starting with soccer, transitioning to football, walking on at University at Buffalo, and eventually earning spots with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers. The rarity of NFL punting positions (just 32 in the world) meant constant competition and uncertainty, but Jake's unwavering determination kept him pushing forward: "I'm going to make it one way or another. I'm just going to keep knocking at the door."What truly sets Jake's story apart is how he transformed his athletic experience into coaching expertise. Unlike many trainers who start with certifications, Jake built his foundation through practical experience and mentorship, including training at the legendary Westside Barbell with Louie Simmons. Those experiences shaped his coaching philosophy: "I've seen plenty of people book smart that don't know what the heck they're doing in the gym." Now operating from a fully-equipped garage gym in Buffalo, Jake applies the conjugate training system to clients ranging from competitive athletes to everyday fitness enthusiasts. His approach combines functional strength with mobility and flexibility—skills he needed as a punter who "was literally pretty much doing a split in the air." Even Buffalo's notorious winters don't stop his dedicated clients from showing up.As a father, Jake has redefined the "dad bod" standard, maintaining his impressive physique while balancing family responsibilities.
