IT'S A PODCAST, CHARLIE BROWN episode 62 offers up shocks - Schulz wasn't a one-comic man in the '50s! He also did, with Jim Sasseville, the sport-themed gag panels "It's Only a Game". The scandal! Tearful goodbyes - episode 6 of "The Snoopy Show" is the S1 finale! And the makings of an international incident - Author/publisher/"peanuts nerd" Nat Gertler tells us why we should hate Canada. As if we needed another reason! (Kidding!) Author Nat Gertler is the publisher of the About Comics line and a "professional peanuts nerd". He has written over a hundred comic book stories and has twice been nominated for Comic-Con's Eisner Award. He went on to publish The Negro Motorist Green Book - Jim Crow-era travel guides for African Americans, an important historical document previously out of print. Rachel and Nat discuss how representation in influential forms of popular media can create a positive form of indoctrination that can ultimately lead to progressive societal change. Before You Go: Rachel expands on the idea of representation in media and the positive impact it can have in minority communities of all kinds. She compares it to the affirmation people who've left cultic groups feel when their experiences are shared with the majority through mass media. EPISODE 50! We made it! Because people think numbers ending in "5" and "0" are significant, and, let's say, in honor of the Peanuts secondary player "5" and because, as Peppermint Patty tells Franklin, "In answer to your question, Franklin, I think we know who the ZERO is..." we thought this month we'd talk to a man steeped in the 70 year (another number ending in zero) history of our favorite comic. Author/publisher/blogger of the "Aaugh Blog", aboutcomics.com and so many other things, Nat Gertler returns to the show for the first time since episode 13. He has been exploring "Peanuts" filmstrips from 1979 like the ones many of us watched in school. So turn out the overhead fluorescent lights, roll the projector and give a listen. Nat Gertler is a respected author (The Peanuts Collection: Treasures from the World's Most Beloved Comic Strip; The Snoopy Treasures), publisher and Peanuts historian. Today's Guest: Nat Gertler, author, The Peanuts Collection: Treasures from the World's Most Beloved Comic Strip Order 'The Peanuts Collection' by Nat Gertler, available from Amazon.com by clicking the book cover above! When you’re done reading your favorite comic strip today, wouldn’t it be cool to have some lasting ephemera to put on your desk, in your school locker, in the kitchen or on your nightstand? Something that will remind you of the laughs you shared with a beloved cartoon character? Me? Today I’d like a plush Satchel stuffed dog from Get Fuzzy, or a replacement of my long-lost Opus doll from Bloom County. Or anything from Calvin and Hobbs or Pearls Before Swine. But when I was kid, long into my teen years and even at college, it was anything Snoopy. I had a poster in my room of Snoopy lying prone on his doghouse, staring at his empty food dish, waiting for the round-headed kid to fill ‘er up. I also had stacks of the paperback collections of daily Peanuts strips and a treasured hardbound volume as well, that I couldn’t wait to later pass on to my daughter when she was barely old enough to study the pictures and begin reading. NAT GERTLER audio excerpt: "My wife, when I married her, still had her Snoopy lunchbox, which my daughter now has."  Order 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Graphic Novel' by Nat Gertler, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! There’s a reason, years after cartoonist Charles Schulz’s death, that Peanuts remains a popular feature in hundreds, maybe thousands of newspapers around the world. It’s funny, it’s sweet and, at times, it’s brilliant. This is the third show I’ve done dedicated largely to Schulz. The first was an interview with his controversial biographer, David Michaelis; the second was with Schulz’ son, Monte, a novelist and author of This Side of Jordan. Today, I’m pleased to welcome Nat Gertler, a collector of Peanuts memorabilia who worked with the Schulz family and the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center to write and compile a fabulous Charlie Brown coffee table keepsake, The Peanuts Collection: Treasures from the World’s Most Beloved Comic Strip. It’s a fabulous assemblage of images and actual reprints of all kinds of cool stuff from 60 years of the world’s favorite newspaper strip. (Sorry, Tintin.) Besides being the man behind a website featuring a collectors’ guide to Peanuts books titled, AAUGH.com, Gertler is also the co-author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Creating a Graphic Novel.
