This week, journalist Larry Tye discusses his recent book The Jazzmen: How Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie Transformed America with reporter Gregory Royal Pratt, accompanied by live jazz from the Richard D. Johnson Trio. This conversation originally took place May 19, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Festival.AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOMEMore about The Jazzmen:From the New York Times bestselling author of Satchel and Bobby Kennedy, a sweeping and spellbinding portrait of the longtime kings of jazz—Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie—who, born within a few years of one another, overcame racist exclusion and violence to become the most popular entertainers on the planet. This is the story of three revolutionary American musicians, the maestro jazzmen who orchestrated the chords that throb at the soul of twentieth-century America.Duke Ellington, the grandson of slaves who was christened Edward Kennedy Ellington, was a man whose story is as layered and nuanced as his name suggests and whose music transcended category. Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in a New Orleans slum so tough it was called The Battlefield and, at age seven, got his first musical instrument, a ten-cent tin horn that drew buyers to his rag-peddling wagon and set him on the road to elevating jazz into a pulsating force for spontaneity and freedom. William James Basie, too, grew up in a world unfamiliar to white fans—the son of a coachman and laundress who dreamed of escaping every time the traveling carnival swept into town, and who finally engineered his getaway with help from Fats Waller. What is far less known about these groundbreakers is that they were bound not just by their music or even the discrimination that they, like nearly all Black performers of their day, routinely encountered. Each defied and ultimately overcame racial boundaries by opening America's eyes and souls to the magnificence of their music. In the process they wrote the soundtrack for the civil rights movement.Based on more than 250 interviews, this exhaustively researched book brings alive the history of Black America in the early-to-mid 1900s through the singular lens of the country's most gifted, engaging, and enduring African-American musicians.About the writers:LARRY TYE is a former reporter at the Boston Globe, off now writing books and running a Boston-based fellowship program for health journalists. The Jazzmen is his ninth book, with others including Home Lands, the upbeat tale of a thriving Jewish diaspora; Superman, the biography of America's longest-lasting (Jewish) hero; and Bobby Kennedy, which looks at RFK's transformation from Joe McCarthy's protege to a liberal icon. Tye graduated from Brown University and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. Tye is co-spearheading a drive to revive local journalism on Cape Cod, where he spends 90 percent of his time.GREGORY ROYAL PRATT covered every day of Mayor Lori Lightfoot's term and was deeply sourced in City Hall, as well as in the other offices of local, state, and national politics that shaped the mayor's administration. Pratt has won several national awards for his political and investigative reporting and he is a regular commentator about the city on local and national media, including appearances on CNN and NPR.RICHARD D. JOHNSON was invited to become a member of Wynton Marsalis' Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, which he did from 2000-2005. As a representative of the United States through the U.S. State Department, Richard was named United States Musical Ambassador. Currently Richard is the founding member of “AFAR music” a jazz record label focusing on Jazz and Salsa musicians. Also Richard has been an Assistant Jazz Piano Faculty member at Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD since 2019. Richard also serves as the piano instructor for the Ravinia Jazz Program located in Chicago, IL.

He's worked with so many people and made so much great music that it's almost unbelievable. But he started off admiring rock before playing any. He grew up in Alaska with much older brothers. Long haired, Les Paul playing, Barracuda driving brothers. So Jeff got into music early. In fact, he started gigging before middle school in a 17 piece jazz band led by his future middle school music teacher and at one point, probably took one guitar lesson from the devil. His family moved to Seattle in the heyday of grunge. He played in a few bands that should have gone farther than they did. He started hanging out with Dave Abruzzesse and getting into session work. But after a while he put down music completely and became a craft bartender. But working with one artist brought him back. That's when things started to snowball and they haven't stopped. He's played with Mark Lanegan, Amy Ray, Indigo Girls, Satchel, and Painted Shield. And despite his best efforts to the contrary, has made beautiful music with his wife, Tekla Waterfield. Most recently, he's recorded a wild cover of Megadeth's Peace Sells…But Who's Buying with some amazing musicians, including mutual friend, Mike Squires for Couch Riffs. Episode 9 – First Raid Clear of…Dazar'alor? Show Notes  Welcome to Episode 9! – 3:27 Sound issues lately - I think I have them resolved. Goodpods listed Solo Queue was as a Top 50 video game podcast last month! Upcoming episodes: 10 will be an HDYS interview with Gin of Live, Laugh, Lore podcast.  Ep. 11 will be just the second half of the introduction to playing WoW.  Sorry to leave you hanging, ThatSkyGuy!   News – 8:37 TWW launches Aug. 26 - I was only one day off!  Early access on Aug. 22, Season 1 activities on Sept. 1.  I broke down and went all in on the 20th anniversary collector's edition. TWW beta access was June 5, with codes for collector's edition people arriving June 12.  I am holding out against spoiling the Day 1 experience for myself, so no beta coverage here. Mid-Summer Fire Festival begins today, June 21! You can travel from zone to zone, city to city, and lighting your factions' bonfires and extinguishing those of the rival faction.  Do this to collect Burning Blossoms, the currency for the Fire Festival.  There are buffs you can get and vendors to spend your blossoms on.  In addition, there are festival related quests and achievements to check out. Holiday boss is Frost Lord Ahune This also brings in a big change to how holidays work in general.  Now, you can only get one of these premier rare drops on the first attempt of the day per Bnet account.  To balance out the reduced availability, Blizzard have introduced bad luck protection, with chances rising after every failed attempt.  Once per day per account, Ahune will drop the Satchel of Chilled Goods - chance at the new Cliffside Wylderdrake armor, along with blossoms, Ahune's staff, and other items.  Festival runs until July 5, so 14 attempts. 10.2.7 patch was released May 7 with various small story questlines, content. Dranei HA Troll HA Harbinger questline - setting up the TWW, good stuff. Sins of the sister - difficult to remember or find, is in Bel'Ameth.  Be Yourself Visage Day - issues with not finding the NPCs is due to you not having done the questing related to those NPCs.  Frustrating, but understandable, but frustrating. All DF quests previously locked behind Renown levels are now available to all level 70 characters. WoW Remix - MoP of course is live!  59 days left and counting.  Once 70, I hear it is quicker for any Timerunner alts that you make AFTER achieving 70. BfA Raids now soloable Is the first TWW raid soloable?  Not quite.  Blizzard announced Story Mode as a new Raid difficulty.  Neru'bar Palace, first TWW raid, will feature a new difficulty called "Story”.  It is not Follower Raids.  Party of 1-10 for a pared down battle with only the final boss.   Popping in to a tavern or inn for a local drink – 40:01 Pandaren Plum Wine at The Lazy Turnip.  We are drinking the local this month.   Question of the month – 40:56 After giving the news and drama of Remix, have I been paying too much attention to headlines and nerf news and not enough time just playing and enjoying?  What is your opinion on MoP Remix?  Do you like this different style of content in this period leading up to a new expansion?      Introducing the Raid of the Month! – 42:55 One big part of many solo players game is waiting literal years for Blizzard to open up old end-game content to solo players.  With the news that BfA raids are now soloable, I chose Battle of Dazaralor for my first Raid of the Month on my Night Elf Feral Druid main, ilvl 484, 499 weapon. Dazaralor is a 12-boss raid and was the second raid of BFA.  It launched in January of 2019, so I waited five and a half years to be able to solo it.  That is too long.  I chose it because it has two rare mounts that can drop on Mythic, both are pretty cool.  The GMOD is a massive robot mech suit mount, the Goblin Machine of Death.  It can drop in Normal, Heroic, or Mythic difficult.  The Glacial Tidestorm, a very cool elemental off Jaina, only drops on Mythic. First 9 bosses gave little trouble.  A 3% wipe after 5 minutes on Mekkatorque, but second time was fine.  No GMOD.  Stormwall Blockade was very difficult and took some research and four deaths.  Jaina was easier, but no Glacial Tidestorm.   Final tally 11 new appearances, no mounts, bunch of five-year-old achievements, 2,471 in gold, minus 250 in repair costs.  Profit of 2,221 gold for roughly an hour of time, maybe less.  I did eat dinner in the middle.  Difficulty was a satisfying level, but I want this in less than five year.  #FollowerRaidsWoW   Outro Thanks to Blizzard and OGRE for audio, my lovely wife, and you for listening. If you want to support the show, SoloQueueWoW at Patreon.com Thank you to current patrons, Andrew, Righteous Bandy, and ThatSkyGuy!  Subscribe to the podcast at your podcast feed of choice, Apple, Spotify, and all the rest.  You can contact me at soloqueuewow at gmail.com, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Biographer (Bobby Kennedy and Satchel) and award-winning reporter Larry Tye talked to us about his newest book, The Jazzmen: How Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Count Basie Transformed America. All three of these iconic musicians, Tye noted, though from different backgrounds, had to endure Jim Crow and racial bigotry but "opened the eyes, ears and souls" of White men and the women they wooed and "set the table for the civil rights movement." Tye took on this writing task out of a promise he made to Black Pullman porters. His many books have resulted from what he, as a journalist, was drawn to enough to devote three years to. The Jazzmen emerged from looking for what these three musical geniuses did in music and the world and despite Tye describing himself as tone deaf and knowing nothing about music and discovering the moral feet of clay of all three of these men of faith. We discussed the lives and times of each of the three and then talked about women in jazz – mostly singers except for Armstrong's wife, Lillian Hardin, and we touched on the origin of the nickname Satchmo for Armstrong and the different class backgrounds of the three and some of their famous sidemen as well as the links between the three and Jewish managers, bandmates and mobsters and Armstrong's adoption by a Jewish family and the Jewish origins of Superman. We spoke, too, of jazz language, Wynton Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Sonny Rollins, Dave Brubeck and what Bobby Kennedy Senior might have felt about his son and namesake running for president.

In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal.
