This guest harkens back to the original concept of this podcast. And she has possibly the most unusual band setup I have ever heard of. Welcome Maura Pond of Luna Honey. And this band has really captured my attention. They've got this new take on the no wave sound that spawned bands like Swans, Rhys Chatham, Theoretical Girls, and others. It's experimental music that's really accessible. Maura and I discover some similarities like being from the VA/DC area and procrastination.  She talks about getting a bit of a late start in the whole “being in a band” thing. She spent most of her twenties going to shows in the DC area instead of performing in shows. But that's not to say she wasn't creating. She was recording on her own, figuring, maybe even counting on, no one ever hearing those songs. And no one will because that hard drive is long dead. She had (and still has) some pretty serious performance anxiety. But playing drums while hanging with future bandmate and future ex-husband Levi Flack, really helped her learn how to handle it. They formed Luna Honey and things have been complicated ever since. There's being in a band with her ex-huband Levi AND current partner Ben Schurr. There's delaying their sophomore album to write and record a completely new album with a completely different sound as a favor for an aunt who was dying. There's the collaborative album they did with Norman Westberg of Swans. And then there's the new album, Bound. It's their best and most diverse album to date. It's simultaneously experimental, haunting, spooky, and catchy. And Maura has some great stories to go with the music. So check them out wherever you get music and follow them @lunahoneymusic. Follow us @performanceanx, subscribe to the podcast, grab merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Send coffee money at ko-fi.com/performance anxiety. Interview with Maura Pond of Luna Honey Luna Honey was originally formed in 2017 in Washington, DC by Maura Pond and Levi Flack who had informally begun playing together in Flack's basement and set a goal to write an album's worth of music. The pair met Benjamin Schurr (Ruah, Br'er, Nyxy Nyx), founder of BLIGHT.records, when his band Br'er opened a show for Arto Lindsay at the Black Cat and he soon after agreed to record and produce them. When they'd finished recording their debut album, Peace Will Grind You Down, Ben insisted that the pair begin performing live, agreed to fill in temporarily, then became a permanent member along with baritone sax player Madeline Billhimer. The four-piece line-up recorded Peace Lives, a live recording of songs mostly from their first album. Billhimer left the band during the recording of their next full-length album, Ballast. Schurr, who was born in Philadelphia, moved back to his home city in 2019 with Flack following shortly after. Christmas Eve of 2019, Pond's aunt shared she had months to live and asked her to write her some music to help accept her transition, asking that it could be released after her death. Still living in DC, Pond recruited Ben to come down to her house in Anacostia and record an intense week of highly improvised sessions. The two worked around the clock on what would become the fourth album Luna Honey, Branches. After the pandemic hit in 2020, Pond moved back to her hometown of Richmond, VA to be closer to her parents and Schurr followed. All three band members commuted back and forth between Richmond and Philadelphia continuing to write songs. Parables was written during the period of geographic separation across DC, Philadelphia, and Richmond. Three months after moving to Richmond, Pond's mother passed after an over a decade long fight with cancer. In the wake of her mother's passing, Pond had found comfort in the solo work of longtime Swans guitarist Norman Westberg and ended up striking up a long-distance collaboration. Aftermath resulted, a meditation on grief and what is left behind. In 2022, Pond and Schurr moved to Philadelphia, finally reuniting the band within the same city. Re-energized after living through the difficulties during COVID and the past several years, the three began recording a new crop of songs that would make up the majority of Bound, with the goal of capturing the raw, powerful energy of their live shows. Luna Honey's art emerges from the creative tension between the death of the ego and the exploration of the subconscious with the pragmatism and discipline of punching the clock and getting the work done. http://www.lunahoney.com http://facebook.com/lunahoneymusic http://www.instagram.com/lunahoneymusic linktr.ee/lunahoneymusic https://open.spotify.com/artist/3kz45E0sd0kFgZIfQNwm2F https://lunahoney.bandcamp.com/album/bound

This week we're discussing every album by Swans from 1982-1986. Led by the unpredictable and immensely talented Michael Gira (and accompanied by long-time collaborators Norman Westberg and Jarboe), Swans is a band that can't possibly be described in a paragraph. Their musical range is unprecedented and continues to evolve today. However, this era of the band made some of the most punishing, brutal, and disturbing music ever made. Unlike anything and truly barbaric. The next mixtape comes from musician and composer Remo Seeland, who is behind the Swiss experimental label Hallow Ground. He's presenting a selection of the label's music, partly in response to the label's recent publication, their first ever "concept-compilation" Epiphanies (Hallow Ground, 2022) released earlier in March this year. Founded by Remo Seeland, Hallow Ground was created in 2013 and has been instrumental in launching the careers of artists such as Kali Malone and FUJI||||||||||TA as well as recently releasing albums by Lawrence English, Norman Westberg, Maria W Horn and Siavash Amini, as many of Seeland's composition as well. More than a record label, Hallow ground is a platform for Music and Art that leads to ‘Visions', also acting as We act as publishers, hosts and performers. For the label's first ever compilation, the artists were commissioned to pursue a non-rational creative process in approaching the phenomenon of epiphany through sound. The results, whether long-form, short vignettes, profane and concrete sounds or spiritual and abstract pieces, perfectly encapsulate what Hallow Ground as a label has stood for since its inception in the year 2013: challenging not only conventional notions of what music is supposed to sound like but also the listeners' perception through the power of sound. The mix Seeland has prepared for us reflects on the sound of some of the main artists behind the label, and a joyous and sinuous journey into experimental introspection. Norman Westberg participated in one of the most mind altering, soul crushing, yet gorgeous and serene, groups to emerge in the last 40 years. We know of so many bands that were influenced by Swans, so it was very humbling to hear what influenced Westberg and his approach to the music that he wanted to make during his multi decade participation in the group. A groundbreaking and unique guitarist, Westberg joined Swans after the release of their EP and the rest is well... History! It was an honor and privilege to speak to this legend as I've personally been a huge fan and admirer of his prolific body of work for some time now. It doesn't get any heavier than this. Norman Westberg is my guest today. This episode went to a few places I wasn't expecting. At first we discuss his entry into music and how he really wanted to play drums. But a photo of Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad made him rethink that idea. But he started off playing bass in his bands. Until The Stooges made him realize that he really could play guitar in a band. This is where we take a left turn. Norman joined Swans when original member Sue Hanel left. Her story is a mystery and Norman and I talk about how she slowly disappeared. But once we get back on track, Norman tells me that his favorite gig was an early one and why it's his favorite. We also touch on a lot of his other projects like Hidden Rifles, SugarTime, Five Dollar Priest, & more. And how Thor Harris made him a guitar out of mahogany. Much of Norman's solo work is ambient and he tells me how he started in that genre and about his process of writing, recording, and performing the music live. Find him on Facebook or bandcamp.
