Croon•er (n) ['kru:nər]: a singer, particularly a male one, who sings sentimental songs in a soft, low voice. Decades before Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, or Uncle Gregg captured the hearts, imaginations, and undergarments of a swooning audience, crooners ruled the earth. The term typically conjures up golden throated singers like Bing Crosby, Nat "King" Cole, Tony Bennett, and Mel Torme interpreting the timeless songs of Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin. But one crooner reigned supreme: Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. He was "The Voice," possessing an instrument of rare, pure, crystalline perfection, with a phrasing, tone, and ability to charge every word with such emotion that you can palpably sense his audience getting weak in the knees. Never has Sinatra's legendary 1940s performing career sounded as immaculately and pristinely alive as it does on the SING label's recent archival projects: At the Hollywood Bowl 1943-48; Christmas on the Air; and the 5-LP box set Long Ago, Far Away, all lovingly restored and mastered by an award winning team and featuring exquisitely detailed liner notes by no greater authority than record producer, historian, archivist, author of the acclaimed Sessions with Sinatra, and host of the weekly radio show Sinatra Standard Time, Chuck Granata. We are fortunate to have Chuck join us this week to chat about all things Sinatra: the innovative new sets, his important role in pop music's breakthrough, his classic and most underrated albums, and the use of AI for good. And, of course, because O3L is focused on classic alternative music, our lists cover some of our favorite singers who carried on crooning into the '70s, '80s & '90s. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, I talk about why new affair details can feel like a whole new betrayal, why the trust-building clock often resets, and how to separate forgiveness from evidence-based trust. If you're trying to reconcile after betrayal but keep finding out more information, this will help you understand why your nervous system is reacting so strongly and what actually needs to happen for safety to be rebuilt. My friends Daniel Carter and Devan Jensen join us to share the story behind the beautiful new hymn “Long Ago, Within a Garden,” with text by Devan and music by Daniel, written in 1999 and added in February 2026 to Hymns—For Home and Church (no. 1210). Daniel, who worked in the Church Curriculum Department for 27 years before retiring in 2016, opens up about his personal journey. After coming out as gay, he made the decision to resign his membership—not out of anger, but as a step toward healing and “returning to love.” He shares moving insights about his path to self-acceptance, grace, peace, and his deep respect for others. Daniel is now married to his husband, Gale, and continues to express love for his Latter-day Saint roots and community. Devan, an active Latter-day Saint who worked alongside Daniel, reflects on their friendship and creative collaboration. They share their perspectives on the meaningful process of bringing this hymn to life. Elder Gérald Caussé Plays the Piano and Speaks About New Hymn, in Versailles, February 2026 (see show notes). The podcast then shifts as Daniel shares about his decision to resign his membership from the Church—and how that was not out of anger but his path to “heal and return to love.” Daniel shares his love for his Latter-day Saint roots and his community. Daniel talks about his journey to find love, self-acceptance, grace, peace, and respect for others—incredible moving insights. Devan talks about his support for his friend and their work together to create this song. This episode is really twofold: The inspiring story of the creation of a new hymn that will bless many lives Daniel's deeply personal journey toward hope, acceptance, and peace—and their lasting friendship Thank you, Daniel and Devan, for your music, your honesty, and your example of being peacemakers. Hello to you listening in Hannover, Germany!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Once upon a time long ago and far away there lived a farmer. His most treasured possession was a fine stallion. Oh my, said the neighbors: what good fortune to own such a fine horse! Perhaps, said the farmer. One night the stallion ran off in a storm. Oh no, said the neighbors, what a disaster to lose your horse! Perhaps, said the farmer. But after some time the stallion came back and following him a mare and a pony. Oh my, said the neighbors: what good fortune! You had no horses and now you have 3! Perhaps, said the farmer. One day the farmer's son galloped off on the mare, hit the branch of a tree, fell to the ground, and badly broke his leg. Neighbors found him, carried him home and said, Oh no, what a disaster for your poor son. Perhaps, said the farmer. The son was in bed with his broken leg when a tribe from the north descended on the village. Every able-bodied man and boy went out to defend their homes and farms. Many died that day. But the farmer's son who could not fight —through no fault of his own— was spared. Oh my, said the neighbors, what good fortune your son was spared! Perhaps, said the farmer. And so the old ones say that just beneath good fortune crouches disaster but always perched above disaster one finds good fortune and it is impossible to know which is really which.Story Prompt: Life shows up in such integrated complexity, how can we know whether what happens is good or bad? The best short stories leave out important information but evoke it in such a way as to cause a kind of explosion of associative connections.*These are my secret rules for making that happen:Lead your listener toward a conclusion and then let them arrive at it on their own. If you state a conclusion and then try to support it with evidence, you are robbing your listener of the joy of discovery.Give your listener the new, the surprising, and the different. If you must give them old information, reframe it; give it to them from a new perspective, so that they will see it again for the first time.Leave out the parts that people skip.My Christmas gift to you is The Story of the Universe According to Roy.I call it “Way Back in the Long Ago.” You will find it at TribalGospel.comIt is an auditory opera, a campfire story of God and the Universe told under a starfilled sky by an old man who is accompanied by musicians who sit at the furthest edges of that circle of light. But your seat is closer. You feel the warmth of the fire as it dances the dance of the story, and the stars twinkle their agreement with glittering laughter. This is chapter one.Way back in the long ago, the maker spoke, and light exploded across the darkness. Energy radiated across the nothing.Time and space and order appeared from the nothing of the long ago.Bits of energy shot like shrapnel from a bomb into the grid that was created by the ordering of the nothing. Bits of energy bonded with other bits to become great lumps that went spinning across the grid.Their spinning caused these lumps to become spherical. Some of the spheres were made of gasses; ice giants and dwarfs, gas giants and dwarfs, and suns of every size and temperature were created by the energy within them.Others of those spheres became great rocks.Oxygen bonded to hydrogen so that water splashed in the hollows of those rocks. The maker smiled.Algae and moss and grass and trees emerged, and the maker smiled again.Winged creatures darted through the air and swimming creatures darted through the sea, and the maker smiled again. And then creatures appeared on the rock itself. Creatures appeared on the land. The maker looked at us and decided to make us into little makers with the power to choose whatever we would choose. We have the authority to say “yes,” and the authority to say “no,” as we stare into the eyes of the maker. The maker gave us this watery rock we live upon, and complete authority over it.We have the freedom to be guided by our choices. We are no longer the captives of our instincts. The maker is not held captive by time and space. The maker created time and space from the nothing. It is only we – you and me – who measure time and space. Our history of deciding for ourselves and living with the consequences has not been a good history.Seven billion of us are crammed onto a rock that circles an 11,000-degree fireball as it shoots through the nothing… at 52 times the speed of a rifle bullet. We are passengers on a world spinning out of control.Having wrongly been told that the maker is in control, we blame the maker for every sadness. You can't have it both ways. You can't have both free will and a benevolent higher power who protects you from yourself.I hope you will take an hour to enjoy
Hello to you listening in Jakarta, Indonesia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. As the old ones say, “If we are not grateful for what we have in this present moment, what makes us think we will be happy with more?” Maybe it's true and maybe it isn't but long ago and far away there lived a man in a small country village. He had everything he had ever asked for: friends, livelihood, wife, family - and yet and yet something was stirring in him: Looking around he asked himself, Is this all there is? Perhaps I am meant for something more, something better. Perhaps I should go and seek my happiness outside the village. One summer morning he left his home, carefully closed the garden gate behind him and walked away. He walked for miles and miles until he could no longer see where he had been. Night fell and he found himself deep in a dark forest. Having no other shelter he took off his shoes, spread his coat on the ground, and fell asleep against the trunk of a tree for he was very tired.Watching him sleep his angel shook her head at the folly of his adventure. But what could she do? She could turn his shoes around facing them back in the direction from which he came. And so she did. When the man awoke he pulled on his coat, put his feet into his shoes and began to walk. After many miles of walking the man began to see familiar fields, a few farmhouses, a village - all looking very much like what he had left; but how could that be? People in the village market greeted him as if he was familiar to them; but how could that be? Arriving at a cottage with a garden gate he was startled to be greeted by children and a woman as if he were their long lost father and husband; but how could that be? They welcomed him inside, took off his shoes, sat him at a table very much like one he knew, fed him food that tasted like home; but how could that be?To this very day the man lives with that family in that home in that village and wonders, “If this isn't happiness, what is?” As the old ones say, “If we are not grateful for what we have in this present moment, what makes us think we will be happy with more?” You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Crisis happens in our lives, but what is important is how we respond to them. A king was in a crisis and he may have not responded correctly, yet God responded with a sign.
I've been studying AI audio so that I can complete a couple of personal projects. The first project is an audiobook containing 18 chapters that span 75 fascinating minutes. Your MondayMorningMemo on December 22nd will contain the following invitation:The tribe encircling the campfire is about to listen to a group of old men tell “The Story of the Long Ago.” You can listen, too, if you like. That invitation will be coming your way on December 22nd.The other project that I will be launching in January or February is an ongoing weekly series called “The Great Writer Series.”My goal is simple: I want to reawaken the world to the power of well-told stories. That's it. I have no other agenda. I just want people to remember what great writing sounds like.Today I've got 3 different samples for you. Each is about 2 minutes long. Click the hyperlinks if you want to hear my people read to you. This first one is an obscure poem by Robert Frost called, “The Bearer of Evil Tidings.”I have asked Amir Amani to read it.The bearer of evil tidings,When he was halfway there,Remembered that evil tidingsWere a dangerous thing to bear.So when he came to the partingWhere one road led to the throneAnd one went off to the mountainsAnd into the wild unknown,He took the one to the mountains. He ran through the Vale of Cashmere,He ran through the rhododendronsTill he came to the land of Pamir. And there in a precipice valleyA girl of his age he metTook him home to her bower,Or he might be running yet.She taught him her tribe's religion:How ages and ages sinceA princess en route to ChinaTo marry a Persian princeHad been found with child; and her armyHad come to a troubled halt. And though a god was the fatherAnd nobody else at fault,It had seemed discreet to remain thereAnd neither go on nor back.So they stayed and declared a villageThere in the land of the Yak.And the child that came of the princessEstablished a royal line,And his mandates were given heed toBecause he was born divine. And that was why there were peopleOn one Himalayan shelf; And the bearer of evil tidingsDecided to stay there himself. At least he had this in commonWith the race he chose to adopt:They had both of them had their reasonsFor stopping where they had stopped. As for evil tidings,Belshazzar's overthrow,Why hurry to tell BelshazzarWhat soon enough he would know?Amor Towles will be our second example. He has given us literary wonders like “A Gentleman in Moscow” and “The Lincoln Highway.” This excerpt is from page 302 of his novel, “Table for Two.”Big Bob Bigelow will read it to us.Eve could not pinpoint when her dislike for lists began, but it must have been around the time she was twelve. It was in the basement of St. Mary's, where she and the rest of the sixth graders were charged with memorizing the Ten Commandments.“Thou shalt not this.” “Thou shalt not that.” “And thou shalt not the other thing.”Then there was the list painted on the sign at the country club pool to remind the children there would be…“No Running.” “No Diving.” “No Splashing.”But most important was her mother's ever-expanding list of what a young lady should not do. Like put her elbows on the table, or speak with her mouth full, or slug her...
