This is such a cool episode of Side Projects. It's the art of improv! And I have to say, I felt a little bit guilty prepping for this one. Ev & Paul from Cinema Cinema have both been on the podcast before, but never together. And we are all joined by the enigmatic Thor Harris. THere's a lot of juice in this one. To say all three guests are well versed in improvisational music is possibly the biggest understatement I've ever made. It's almost like saying McDonald's is well versed at making fast food. We begin with a brief history of Thor and how he started playing music and eventually improvisational music. I also get reacquainted with Ev, Paul, and Cinema Cinema. They have just released an album of music that is entirely improvisational and they tell me the whole story behind the session. Yes session. The album, Mjolnir, was recorded in one day in three 30 minute sessions. Thor arrived at BC Studio, arms swinging, with no instruments. No music or lyrics were prepared. And this was the first time Ev and Paul have ever met Thor. So out came Ev's guitar, Paul's drums (including a tin whistle he keeps for just such an emergency) and a whole bunch of neglected instruments from the studio's closets. This was an exercise of being forced to stay in the moment. Nothing was prepared and time was limited. What came out of the sessions was magical. It was so magical that Thor and Cinema Cinema are working on plans to play live together. Pick up Mjolnir on Cinema Cinema's Bandcamp page. Follow them @cinemacinemaband on Instagram. Follow Thor @thorharris for more info. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Buying stuff at performanceanx.threadless.com or sending us coffee money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety helps us out tremendously. Welcome to another episode of Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. This week on the show, Daryl Black Eagle Jamieson and guitarist Yonatan Gat join us to discuss their collaborative work as Medicine Singers, which pairs the powwow drum and the voices of the Eastern Medicine Singers with Yonatan's electrified guitar and contributions from experimental composer Joe Rainey, Ikue Mori of DNA, Thor Harris of Swans, previous Transmissions guest Laraaji, and the late jamie branch. Tapped into a kind of frenzied energy, the album is an overpowering force, and it features a transcendent cover of Link Wray's immortal “Rumble.” Ahead of a performance September 24 at Pioneer Works with guests Lee Ranaldo, Laraaji, and Thor Harris, Jamieson and Gat join us to discuss their collaboration. A quick word: sorry about some of the audio in this one; there was an issue with a connection, but the conversation is more than worth it. Thanks for checking out Transmissions. If you dig the show, please consider leaving a five star rating or a review—or just forwarding your favorite episodes to a friend. We're a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Next week on the show: Medicine Singers.

The SMO podcast team was at SXSW 2022 with the University of Arizona Wonder House. In this episode, Diana sets out to disentangle the culture of the city of Austin and the hyperconnected projection that is SXSW. Are they in a codependent relationship? What has SXSW done to Austin's music scene? Why do even tech-savvy people prefer f2f to online? And what does all this mean for the next frontier of tech experiences, Virtuality 3.0? Interviews with Austin residents and visitors include Thor Harris of Swans, Luke Savisky of the 1990 film Slacker, and the crew of the food truck Cocina de Carnival aka Big Bertha. This episode has considerable profanity! A censored version will be available at ivoices.org or https://ivoices.ischool.arizona.edu/social-media-and-ourselves. Big thanks to Thor Harris, Eric Redpath, Carlos, Paige Swift, Luke Savisky, and Pri. Also to Ravi, Ratziv, David, Jose Rodriguez and The Cocina de Carnaval Crew and their families. It was awesome being at the Wonder House, so special thanks to Misha, Joe, and the rest of the Wonder House team. Drums by Thor Harris were recorded in the spectacular installation "Volumes" by Ezra Masch. This episode of Social Media & Ourselves was produced by Diana Daly and scored by Gabe Stultz of the iVoices Media Lab, which is sponsored in part by the Center for University Education Scholarship at the University of Arizona. Norman Westberg is my guest today. This episode went to a few places I wasn't expecting. At first we discuss his entry into music and how he really wanted to play drums. But a photo of Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad made him rethink that idea. But he started off playing bass in his bands. Until The Stooges made him realize that he really could play guitar in a band. This is where we take a left turn. Norman joined Swans when original member Sue Hanel left. Her story is a mystery and Norman and I talk about how she slowly disappeared. But once we get back on track, Norman tells me that his favorite gig was an early one and why it's his favorite. We also touch on a lot of his other projects like Hidden Rifles, SugarTime, Five Dollar Priest, & more. And how Thor Harris made him a guitar out of mahogany. Much of Norman's solo work is ambient and he tells me how he started in that genre and about his process of writing, recording, and performing the music live. Find him on Facebook or bandcamp. Check out his albums on Etsy, as well; especially if you like bespoke packaging. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Will Johnson over Zoom video! Will Johnson’s 7th solo album “El Capitan” is out now. Recorded over three days in June 2020 at Ramble Creek Recording in Austin, Texas with contributions from Britton Beisenherz, Thor Harris (of Shearwater, Xiu Xiu), and Lindsey Verrill (Little Mazarn). It’s a more subdued album than last year’s Wire Mountain, with Johnson using only his Stella acoustic guitar to record. Here’s his description of these songs: There’s a simple “mornin”” that is exchanged amongst many early bird runners as they pass. I’ve noticed this since I was nine or so, and have taken different interpretations from it: Have a good run. Good luck. Have a good day. Stay safe. We’re a part of something, moving in harmony. Look at us fucking go. It’s pleasing in its way; a show of support. The location might be a utility road in Wyoming or a city park in St. Petersburg. I don’t know the root of it, or how this transfer of pleasantry started amongst this cut of humanity. It’s never been: “morning..” or “good morning” or even “g’mornin”. It’s just: “mornin'”. There’s a musicality to it, and I think it means more to me these days, as do the moments outside. It’s where the lines, the choruses, and some full songs are coming from, now more than ever. This new record started years ago at a friend’s dining room table in Portland, building up on long desert drives, in hotel bathrooms, at casino bars, and on these regular runs. Over years, the songs mortared themselves together into something I thought fit together. Some are now quite old, and a couple are pandemic-new. It feels like we’re at the mercy of nature now more than ever, and the quietude of this patch of time made sense to document them and finally get them out. I took a hundred-dollar Stella guitar to my friend, Britton’s, and we spent three days, distanced, building something. We let go of old habits, peeled things back, and tracked it all to a Tascam 388. We ate tacos, drank Tecate and found happiness in the act of moving again in the early summer heat. There’s tape hiss, and there are imperfections. Thor Harris and Lindsey Verrill contributed beautifully from afar. The other night I took to another run to feel the night’s breeze, and maybe see if another melody might be out there. It was late, and now I sometimes take to running right down the middle of once-busy streets. Another night runner approached and moved over, giving wide berth. He put his mask up, and I pulled my bandana up from my neck. There was compassion in the movement of the dance. He flashed a peace sign, and I flashed one back. It was a needed reminder that most of us are still moving together, just from different places now. I headed back to the middle of the road, and we headed our opposite directions, giving chase to whatever kind of solace and satisfaction we could find in that quiet night. Chasing clarity in the stillness of the world’s new, oft-strange chapter. We want to hear from you! In this episode, I get to meet kindhearted drummer extraordinaire, Thor Harris. Thor is best known for drumming with bands like Shearwater and Swans, but he has had a long, esteemed career, playing with many of our favorite musicians. We have a nice chat about music, art, family, kindness, politics, the current pandemic sweeping the globe, and more. I hope you enjoy.
Thor Harris is a percussionist known for his work with Swans, Bill Callahan, Rob Halverson, Devendra Banhart, and his own ensemble--Thor & Friends. Thor is also a sculptor, instrument builder, carpenter, and former TX gubernatorial candidate. Thor tells Joe about: being raised by an engineer and schoolteacher near Galveston, TX; studying drums in at Musicians Institute in Hollywood; learning to manage depression and thriving creatively; his love of nature; his infamous video "How to Punch a Nazi"; and the impetus to start his own band. During the age of social distancing, we're recording remotely and releasing new episodes every day.
Last winter, a bunch of us musicians who release albums on Joyful Noise met up for their holiday party in Indianapolis, and this also included us all recording a bunch of music for a holiday compilation, which ended up being more fun and more interesting musically than I had ever thought it could be. Adam Harding had a song with Thor Harris, which I ended up playing on, and there was a general love of cross-pollination all around. I clicked with Adam right away, and appreciated him taking a bit of time to tell some stories about awful shows. We were talking in the kitchen of the recording studio while Kid Millions recorded a song in the next room, which accounts for both its brevity and the sound in the background.

Thor Harris was one of the inspirations for starting this podcast. Thor has been the drummer for Shearwater, the Swans, Thor and Friends, Amanda Palmer, Hospital Ships, Xiu Xiu, Angels of Light, Bill Callahan, Lisa Germano, and a dozen other bands. He's a carpenter, a plumber, a painter, a sculptor, a writer, and a has been an outspoken advocate for getting the help you need if you're suffering from depression. He's written and illustrated a book called Ocean of Despair, a firsthand account of surviving a nervous breakdown. He's basically the man I had sort of hoped to grow up to be. I love his music. I love his fearlessness. I love his commitment to living with integrity. I love his house. I love his dogs. He is a hero. You can watch a short film about Thor's struggle with depression here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGewlMBtDeQ&t= You can find information about Ocean of Despair here: http://monofonuspress.com/store/if-07-out-soon You can hear Thor and Friends here: https://lmduplication.bandcamp.com/album/thor-friends-s-t You can read Thor's essay "How to Tour in a Band or Whatever" here: https://www.constellation-chicago.com/2014/08/08/how-to-tour-in-a-band-or-whatever-by-thor-harris/ And finally, this week's Crash and Ride Spotify Playlist is here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6s3qIAfu0mknUQK8YRSjHQ
Thor Harris has played drums in bands like Swans, Shearwater, and Stick People, and now fronts his own band, Thor & Friends. I first became aware of Thor due to a list he wrote that was widely circulated on the internet entitled, "How to Tour in a Band or Whatever."

Turkuaz, a colorful 9-piece power funk band from Brooklyn, shares how the band originally formed, chose their name and grew their fan base. Singers Sammi and Shira read through a list of the band's rules of the road - which they break all the time, and we also get a chance to hear from Thor Harris, the original author of the viral list: "How to Tour in a Band or Whatever." Stephen gets to practice a fascinating vocal tip. Thank you to our sponsor Izotope for making our show possible. Special thanks to Stephanie Deluca Photo credit: Dani Brandwein
