GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!Welcome to episode 19 of Buddy’s Buddies! This is part 2 of the ‘Margate Voices’ series, which is a collabo between myself and the Margate Mercury - and also, a new episode of Buddy’s Buddies which in itself, in current times, is a monumental occasion for all kinds of reasons, so there are many reasons to rejoice!Lucy, the editor of Margate Mercury had an idea of a way to combine forces, whereby the format of the podcast would be the same as always but the guests would be in a somewhat different vein to usual. In this case, as a follow up to the previous edition with Cyril, she connected me with Carla. Through Carla it was also possible to meet and chat to her mum Gloria, which was also a true treat. What follows is a really sweet chat between me, Carla and Gloria, which took place at Olby’s (massive thanks to Eli & the gang there who, as always, managed to make a perfectly safe and secure scenario in which to get things done) late in August. Gloria is from Trinidad and came to the UK in the 60s, and I feel like there’s a podcast series in itself waiting to happen with that whole story - we barely even scratched the surface there but I hope we get to meet up again and go further into it all. Carla was also excellent, and it was really fascinating to hear how she’s been getting on over the past half a year through the chaos as someone in the education system. We also touched on the Black Lives Matter movement and events through 2020 to hear their unique perspectives on it all, and covered a good amount of ground between us all! No spoilers as I just want you to hear the whole thing and just take an hour or two away from where you are now to get lost in a lovely chat with two engaging, sweet and truly fascinating guests. I really do wanna get the back for round 2 - we’ve only just begun! Please enjoy Carla and Gloria, Thanet’s finest!EPISODE REFERENCES:MARGATE SEA BATHING HOSPITAL • ROCK CHOIR • GEORGE CLINTON • DREAMLAND • TRINIDAD • MARGATE PRINTWORKS • RAMSGATE OPERATIC SOCIETY • STEPPING OUTBUDDY'S LINKS:BUDDY PEACE PATREON!BUDDY PEACE on INSTAGRAM!BUDDY PEACE on THE INTERNET!BUDDY PEACE on BANDCAMP!MARGATE MERCURY!Recording • Production • Mix • Edit • Music • Artwork • Writings – Buddy... GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!Welcome to episode 9 of Buddy’s Buddies!I trust you are great! I also assume that you are great. Don't let me down now...A proper salute to you all from here in the BP labs, what a treat to have you back! Thanks so much for joining... I'm so happy to unveil this chat this week, it was a great one - I've known Bri and Gaz for something around a year, maybe more but not a ton of time, and in that time I've been so happy to find out more and more about the creative world in which they live and - well - create! Their most recent work is the gorgeous stage show 'Parakeet', heavy on the music and very full of positive vibes and inspiring messages but with a proper punk aesthetic and really ace message running through it. But they are responsible for a huge amount more, and oh good heavens above you are about to hear all about it...So we get into all things Parakeet, which involves the initial stages of it right up to the Edinburgh run, all things My Beautiful Black Dog (their previous show) and the physical fuel which made it burn so brightly, as well as some really nice forward thinking business about education, art and the arts, culture, music influences and lifestyles, looking after one another on a small and larger scale, process, mental wellbeing, origins, young folk, politics (not too much, you're safe!) and so much more. I refuse to spoil it! Just get in there and enjoy yourself eh? YOU SHALL! In episode 59 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering buying a new camera, the definition of art photography, photographic degree shows and the power of community. Plus this week photographer Fleur Olby takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Fleur Olby grew up in rural Yorkshire where she developed her love of nature. She studied for a MA in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martin's, London and began working as a commissioned still-life photographer in London in 1993 for editorial, design and advertising clients, which she continued for the following fifteen years. She was commissioned over a seven year period to make a series of plant portraits by The Observer Life Magazine, illustrating the gardener and television presenter Monty Don's gardening articles that resulted in the book Gardening Mad, published by Bloomsbury. During this time she also worked for The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, Elle, The Independent, House and Garden, Arena, E.S. magazine, Wallpaper, Marie Claire, Gardens Illustrated, and Food Illustrated. Her monograph, Fleur: Plant Portraits, a combination of commissioned and personal work, was published by Fuel Publishing in 2005. Fleur describes herself as a photographic artist; and her images and extended narratives as visual poems. Green on White, a selection from Fleur: Plant Portraits was exhibited as an installation at, The Gallery on The Green, in Settle, North Yorkshire and a large-scale installation titled Horsetail Equisetum was shown at the City and Islington College, London. Her self-published book series, Velvet Black was launched at the Impressions Gallery Photobook Fair, Bradford in 2018. She continues to develop her long-term project, Colour from Black, that looks at the sense of place through her connection with nature in rural areas of Northern England. Her personal work has been featured in Fotofilmic, Der Grief, Visuelle, and New Dawn. Noorderlicht, the Charles Dodgson Award and the 5th Biennial in Barcelona have all selected her work to be shown in group exhibitions in 2018. https://fleurolby.com Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015). His next book New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography will be published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2019. One of the main goals of current palaeomagnetic research is the attempt to acquire high-resolution data on palaeodirections and -intensities in order to obtain detailed information about the Earth's magnetic field in the geological past. The material best suited for such studies are basaltic rocks. For these high-quality directional investigations and especially for palaeointensity determinations, a profound knowledge about the stability, magnetomineralogical character and the domain state of the carriers of remanence is imperative. The emphasis of the present work was placed on the investigation of basalts exhibiting partial or complete self-reversal of natural remanent magnetisation (NRM). This phenomenon is not an exotic rarity but a widespread characteristic of many basaltic rocks. However it remains usually unnoticed by routine palaeomagnetic measurements as it requires special techniques for its detection. In this work samples from Olby and Laschamp (France) and Vogelsberg (Germany) showing the phenomenon were studied with rock magnetic, microscopic and microanalytical techniques in order to identify the carriers of self-reversed remanent magnetisation. Further aims were to determine the exact mechanism of self-reversal acting in basalts and to evaluate the consequences for the reliability of palaeomagnetic data. On the basis of the experimental work a numerical model was developed which shows that, from the physical point of view, the observed magnetomineralogy is capable of causing self-reversal. The present work provides the following new insights: The phenomenon is caused by two magnetic phases with different blocking temperatures which are magnetically coupled. The lower blocking temperature corresponds to the primary titanomagnetite (mother phase) crystallising from the basaltic magma. The remanence with higher blocking temperature is carried by titanomaghemite (daughter phase) evolving from the primary titanomagnetite by partial low-temperature oxidation. The daughter phase forms narrow bands along cracks in the otherwise unaffected mother phase particles. This yields a close side-by-side assemblage of titanomagnetite and titanomaghemite with markedly different magnetic properties in one and the same grain. By applying the various microscopic techniques on identical grains, it was possible to directly correlate magnetomineralogy with magnetic domain structure. Numerical calculations of remanence acquisition demonstrate that two-phase particles with the experimentally observed geometry and magnetic properties are able to acquire a partially or completely self-reversed remanent magnetisation. The calculations also prove that the two magnetic phases present in the studied samples are coupled by magnetostatic interaction. The experimental results indicate that the low-temperature oxidation process responsible for the formation of the second magnetic phase takes place at temperatures at or above the blocking temperature of this daughter phase during primary cooling. This titanomaghemite phase is thus carrying a stable remanence in direction of the ambient magnetic field. Although the original titanomagnetite as the mother phase is in a strict sense the primary magnetic mineral, it does not carry the primary magnetic remanence but is at least in part magnetostatically coupled to the titanomaghemite. Therefore, its remanence is - at least in part - antiparallel to the external field. MFM domain observations present evidence that the mother phase is in the magnetic multidomain range. Hence, its magnetic remanence is not stable and is replaced by a viscous overprint acquired at ambient temperatures. In contrast, the daughter phase has a higher coercivity due to oxidation induced stresses and an increased domain width. Regarding the samples from Olby, these magnetomineralogical investigations directly lead to new arguments in favour of the existence of the Laschamp geomagnetic event: As the high blocking temperature daughter phase carries a stable remanence in direction of the external magnetic field, the local geomagnetic field direction was indeed reversed at the time of emplacement. Due to their complex magnetomineralogy and remanence acquisition, samples exhibiting partial or complete self-reversal are not suitable for palaeointensity determinations. In order to identify and exclude such samples in the course of such experiments, a modification of the existing Thellier-Thellier method is proposed. Additionally, this new procedure is also able to detect remanence carried by multidomain (MD) particles. The method substantially improves the reliability and quality of palaeointensity estimates as multidomain behaviour is among the most common reasons for erroneous results in Thellier-type palaeointensity determinations.
