Breaking With Brett Jensen
12-1-25: Details Of Another Secret Payout

Breaking With Brett Jensen

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2025 31:34 Transcription Available

Tune in here to this Monday edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen opens the show by discussing a story he broke on social media: The City of Charlotte has settled a seven-year lawsuit brought by Lance Patterson, the husband of newly appointed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Estella Patterson. Jensen notes that the $99,999 payout is significant because City Manager Marcus Jones does not need City Council approval for settlements under $100,000. Another notable detail is that the payout will be divided between two parties: Patterson will receive $40,000, and his legal team at James McIlroy & Diehl will receive the remaining amount of $59,000. Later, Jensen speaks with North Carolina Rep. David Willis, who represents Union County. Willis discusses “Iryna’s Law,” which took effect in North Carolina today. He was a key advocate for the measure, which honors slain Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Zarutska. Zarutska's death on Charlotte's light rail made national and international headlines back in August. Among the several components of the law, Willis says the main provisions address cashless bail and pretrial release for violent offenders. He adds that the law also revises the definition of violent offenses in an effort to reduce the burden on inexperienced magistrates. Willis concludes the interview by noting that the law aims to better address the mental health needs of violent offenders. Listen here for all of this and more on Breaking With Brett Jensen.

We honor the life and ministry of Dr. Jim Diehl (1937-2025), a beloved pastor, district superintendent, and General Superintendent Emeritus of the Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Diehl passed away on November 2, 2025. Just days before his passing, on October 30, he traveled to Nampa, Idaho, to preach at Bethel Church of the Nazarene for the Holiness Partnership event. This episode features that powerful message. Dr. Diehl preaches on the Christian life as a journey that goes far beyond a single moment of decision. He outlines three key prayers that define this lifelong walk: "Lord, forgive me" (repentance), "Lord, take me" (consecration), and "Lord, make me" (the ongoing work of sanctification). Using his trademark warmth and personal stories, Dr. Diehl explains how God continually works to "pull the stumps" of things like prejudice, impatience, and fear from our lives, shaping us into more Christ-like individuals.

Jeffrey Diehl, Managing Partner and Head of Investments at Adams Street Partners, joins the InsuranceAUM.com podcast to explore whether the rapid growth of private credit platforms, particularly BDCs and insurer-owned portfolios, is creating systemic risk or sustainable opportunity.   In this candid conversation with host Stewart Foley, Diehl explains how deployment pressure, the rise of PIK loans, and reduced underwriting discipline could challenge returns in an overheated segment of the market. He also unpacks the scale of capital flowing through these platforms, the structural differences between perpetual BDCs and traditional private credit funds, and what red flags insurance investors should be monitoring.   For anyone allocating to private credit, or evaluating manager selection, this episode offers timely, practical insight into how scaling may impact risk, performance, and long-term portfolio outcomes.

Philip Diehl reacts to Friday's CPI report and what it means for the Fed. He anticipates at least two 25 basis point rate cuts this year, with another 1-2 next year as the “base case.” However, until we get more clarification around private credit risks, “we don't know what that course will be” beyond October. He warns though that those cuts won't drive the market higher. Philip expects the dollar to continue to weaken and talks about momentum in the gold trade; he thinks people are “underestimating the vulnerability of the market.”======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Overholt & Co., currently a subsidiary of Beam Suntory, which is a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings of Osaka, Japan. It is currently distilled at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, KYHenry Oberholzer (Anglicized to “Overholt”), a German Mennonite farmer, moved to West Overton, Pennsylvania, on the banks of Jacobs Creek in Western Pennsylvania in 1800.  His family came from the area of Germany which specialized in distilling “korn”, or rye whiskey, and Henry took up the tradition. In 1810, Henry's son took over the management of the distillery and made it into a business. By the 1820s, the distillery was putting out 12 to 15 gallons of rye whiskey per day. By 1859, Overholt incorporated his business as “A. Overholt & Co.” He operated out of a new distillery building that was six stories high, 100 feet long, and which could produce 860 gallons per day.Old Overholt was one of six distilleries allowed to continue issuing bottled-in-bond, government stamped, pints with a dosage cup atop the cap and doctor's prescription attached to the back.Maybe because Andrew Mellon was a partner in the business and he was the secretary of the treasury under HardingMellon Sold his shares in 1925 due to concerns from prohabisionists Beam bought out the old overholt in 1986, when they made the purchase of Dekuyper Peachtree Schnapps. This was during a time when brown liquor was frowned upon and clear liquors were in. Our Bottle:Pipe Pairings: 80 proof- Cornell and Diehl gentleman caller. BIB- eight state burley Cornell and Diel 10 year- Irish Flake by petersonMonogahala rye- Cornell and Diehl riverboat gamblerCocktails:Research Sourceshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Overholt https://whiskyadvocate.com/old-monongahela-rye Support the showWebsite:www.whiskeychaserspod.comFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/whiskeychaserspodcastInsta:https://www.instagram.com/whiskeychaserspodcast/TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@whiskeychaserspodcastThanks For Listening! The challenges they face extend beyond scaling a business or managing operations; they wrestle with the pressure of delivering meaningful social change while also keeping a wary eye on their bottom line. That's why Caroline Diehl MBE, Founder and CEO of Social Founders, has dedicated herself to supporting the well-being of the people behind these organizations. She's not focused on the nuts and bolts of business planning or marketing. Instead, Caroline is building a global network that supports founders themselves, giving them a space to connect, decompress and recharge. As Caroline explained on today's episode, “It's amazing how some of the most experienced and brilliant social founders in our network still say that they feel lonely. They feel that they can't talk really openly to their board or to their management team. They can't constantly dump on their partner back at home. And they love the idea of connecting with other founders.”She's quick to note that the ecosystem for social impact founders doesn't match what's available to tech founders. “If you're a tech founder, you're on to a good thing. But if you're a charity founder or a social entrepreneur, it's pretty tough. And there's not much support for the actual founder.”Caroline's approach is all about founder well-being. Social Founders doesn't duplicate what others do. Instead, they partner with organizations offering practical business help, like the UK's School for Social Entrepreneurs, while focusing on the founder's mental and emotional health. “We're there for the well-being of the founder, which in turn helps that founder be a better founder,” Caroline said. The double bottom line—delivering both social impact and financial sustainability—adds another layer of complexity. Caroline captured this tension: “Sometimes you can create more social impact without having to focus on the money all the time and vice versa. If you're focusing on the money all the time, then you end up just maybe selling lots of mugs or stickers or something and not doing enough social impact.”Changemakers need not go it alone. Social Founders offers a global community, recognizing the value of peer support and connection. If you're building a social enterprise or founding a charity, consider joining the movement at socialfounder.org. You'll find a group of like-minded leaders who understand your challenges—and a network designed to help you thrive.tl;dr:Caroline Diehl MBE founded Social Founders to support the well-being of social enterprise and charity founders. She highlights the loneliness and unique pressures founders face, especially balancing impact and financial sustainability.Caroline emphasizes building networks over business advice, prioritizing emotional and peer support for changemakers. Her superpower, positive energy, has fueled her success and resilience across multiple impactful organizations.Listeners are invited to join Social Founders' global network for community, inspiration and support. How to Develop Positive Energy As a SuperpowerCaroline described her superpower as “positive energy.” She explained, “Whoever I'm talking to, whether I'm meeting some grand poobah running some big company or the people that I really love who are the grassroots founders and changemakers, or whether I'm just on my own… I can call on a superpower inside me of positive energy and make that happen.” Even during difficult times, when doubt creeps in, Caroline channels this positive energy to keep moving forward, whether she's running marathons or building impactful organizations.Illustrative Story:After founding the Media Trust and Together TV, Caroline started Social Founders from scratch, with no investment capital and little personal financial security. She had to convince funders, opinion leaders and founders from diverse backgrounds to join her network. Despite being “not young anymore,” she relied on her positive energy to inspire and mobilize others. Caroline shared that much of her energy comes from the people she meets—like a renowned Japanese dancer who supports people with learning difficulties through dance, or a young entrepreneur in Japan helping formerly incarcerated youth start businesses. These encounters continually fuel her own drive.Actionable Tips for Developing Positive Energy:Focus on your love for your mission and your passionate belief in the change you want to make.Keep reminders—like sticky notes with meaningful messages—visible in your workspace.Connect regularly with the people you aim to help; their stories can renew your motivation. When energy is low, spend time outdoors: go for a walk, bike ride or simply get fresh air.By following Caroline's example and advice, you can make positive energy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses.
