On Iowa women's wrestling media day, Iowa women's wrestling coach Clarissa Chun addressed the upcoming season. The team returns nine All-Americans, including four defending national champions, and welcomes seven freshmen and four transfers. Chun highlighted the benefits of training in the new state-of-the-art Goschke Center and emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, rather than focusing solely on outcomes. She praised transfer Kennedy Blades for her quick integration into the team and discussed the growth of leadership within the program, particularly from the current juniors who have embraced guiding the newcomers. Chun also addressed the hunger and competitive spirit of the incoming freshmen, noting their desire to challenge for starting positions. Chun reflected on the culture established at Iowa, which has attracted top recruits and transfers, and expressed a desire to see more Division I programs, especially in Power Five conferences, add women's wrestling. She also gave an update on injuries, stating that Nyla Valencia and Haley Ward will be out for the season but the rest of the roster is ready. Chun concluded by discussing the importance of international training opportunities, mentioning the recent collaboration with the Canadian team and last year's experience with the Ukrainian team. She also previewed the upcoming U23 World Championships, where three Hawkeyes will compete, including Macey Kilty, Kylie Welker, and Skye Realin. Want an ad-free version of the show? Today on the Logan Blackman Show, we preview Monday's upcoming game between Michigan and Washington, with one set to be crowd college football national champions. With that, followed by a rant about the game being on Monday, we go over each quarterback's draft stock, discussing who could and should be drafted higher between McCarthy and Penix once the draft rolls around in April. Sticking with quarterbacks, we discuss former Oregon Duck quarterback, Ty Thompson, possibly transferring to Iowa, as well as trying to figure out who Iowa's next offensive coordinator could be for next season. On Iowa, we then go over Cooper DeJean's decision to declare for the NFL draft, and why it was either a good or bad decision for the outstanding corner. Fully moving on to the NFL, we take a look at the recently revealed squads for the upcoming Pro Bowl, going over notable exclusions as well as discussing who shouldn't have made the roster. Finally, we take part in a quiz naming each NFL team's last Pro Bowl quarterback as well as preview the final week of regular season NFL football and my final fantasy championship match-up. Enjoy!

The reminder for the podcast keeps popping up like every five minutes, so let’s work around this one last thing. I’m leaving The Gazette. It’s been 24 years, nearly 22 covering Iowa football. That’s a long damn time in the same circle against the same opponent. There can’t be too many other beat writers who’ve been on the griddle this long. If there are, what in the hell are you doing? You traded your heart for a phone. Thanks to everyone who’s been along for the ride. That’s lame, I know, but we’re not going to be dramatic here. The On Iowa Podcast was sort of the ultimate “Odd Couple” thing. Scott Dochterman kept the records. I tagged along, learned a lot and had a lot of fun. I don’t expect I’ll be part of anything like it again unless I pull something fabulously entertaining out of my ass. I do plan to learn the electric guitar. The On Iowa pod worked because it was “hyper-Iowa.” There was nothing else, really. We didn’t do guests. We did the Hawkeyes. You didn’t get the “drive by,” you got a meal and a dessert and maybe a funny hat or an action figure. Scott is the smartest dude on the beat. I felt good in his company, during the podcast and out in stadiums. I was the “Oscar,” the Walter Matthau to Scott’s “Felix,” the Jack Lemmon. But it wasn’t always that way. This might not make sense, but I’ll try: Where I was weak, Scott was strong and vice versa. That made for some really great content. 10 years and 2 ½ months worth, to be exact. Yes, I’m referencing a movie from 1968. I’m no longer updating my references. I don’t have to. We downsized and I moved to the woods across the river. That’s something that’s been in the mail for me since May and a big driving force behind this. Something something pandemic. Also, at some point, you have to stop bitching to your poor wife about your job. She’s not your damn psychologist. I’m trading back for my heart. Face me to the shore. I’m swimming to the good latitudes. — Marc Morehouse
Our Dear Hawkeye Family - If you follow us on Twitter, you’ve probably noticed that DC, Champ and myself haven’t participated in our usual amount of nonsense the past few days. Like most of you, we’re trying to sort through our many thoughts on where we are as a country and humans alike.. Like many of you, we do not have the answers, despite how much we wish we did. Unfortunately, discussing what Iowa players would win the Game of Thrones, interviewing athletes and other college sports personas, and arguing about quarterbacks and coordinators just doesn’t seem right or appropriate at this moment. There is a lot going on in our country, things more serious, more important than Iowa athletics and the greater college landscape as a whole. We know there are many opinions out there, and we are not a podcast that is going to tell you which of them are right and which of them are wrong. Rather, we are a podcast that chooses to favor the things that create a community of acceptance among black and white, men and women, friends, family, neighbors, humans. We love interacting with you all on a daily basis. We love bringing you an hour or two of escape each and every week. But, for right now, we believe all of our time might be better served in reflection. I think our future Heisman winner put it best this past weekend when he said, “Everyday, we live in a world where people of color feel threatened and it is 100% unacceptable. I can’t tell yall that I can relate in any type of way, but I can promise yall that I love and support yall above everything else. This isn’t an issue of religion, politics or anything other than Human Rights. We as HAWKEYES, and a family, are going to get through this together. Love you all. Be safe. Talk with you all soon. There will be an #oniowapod next week. Not sure when, yet, but football isn’t over. It isn’t over over, anyway. This is Huskers week for the Hawkeyes. Nebraska is playing with whatever strength a team gathers when it’s playing for bowl eligibility in its last game of the season. Don’t discount this. It might be the same kind of strength someone finds when their baby is trapped underneath a burning car. You know, tragedy strength. So, Nebraska should have “tragedy strength” on Friday. That’s its burning baby under the car. Scott and I talked Huskers. We really talked Hawkeyes. That’s why it’s named the “On Iowa” podcast. It’s a podcast about Iowa. Yeah, I set it up to work that way. We’re looking at wind and rain and snow on the drive over and back. Ah well. Probably the Holiday Bowl, so you have that to look forward to. Anything else? Oh yeah, happy Thanksgiving!
It’s time to football. It just is. That’s what we do on the On Iowa podcast. Yeah, there’s some basketball yada yada, but football is the thing and we go into the Hawkeyes today with the waders on. Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz didn’t hint, he flat-out said in his Tuesday news conference that there’s really nothing worse than “talking season.” You know, that time of year where you make an outlandish prediction for your team and then realize two weeks later that you might’ve bitten off more than you can chew … for your team. Basically, we’re almost at the end of prediction season. Time for doing season. Wait, time for DNG SZN. Today was a fairly comprehensive breakdown of the Hawkeyes. Also, we answered a mile of Twitter questions. OK, don’t literally measure to see if it was an actual mile. It’s probably not, but we did answer a lot a lot. Thanks for listening. We are on for Thursdays from here on out.

Iowa is off to an 0-2 start in the Big Ten, but this week probably brings a reprieve as Illinois visits Kinnick Stadium for homecoming. On this edition of the On Iowa Podcast, Marc Morehouse and Mike Hlas look back at what went wrong in the Michigan State game and if those will become season-long trends. Iowa's loss to Penn State last Saturday reminded a lot of people of the Hawkeyes' 2015 Big Ten championship game loss to Michigan State as the Nittany Lions, like the '15 Spartans, scored on their final drive to win. Conveniently, Sparty is Iowa's next opponent. In this edition of the On Iowa Podcast, Iowa players talk about their memories of that 2015 game (the ones who were around then, at least), their performance against PSU and what to expect from MSU (A lot of "they are who they are"). Here's the lineup: 0:41 - LB Josey Jewell, 9:52 - LB Ben Niemann, 15:09 - DL Parker Hesse, 18:30 - CB Josh Jackson 21:39 - QB Nate Stanley 26:55 - OL Boone Myers 32:30 - OL Keegan Render Follow @OnIowaCRG on Twitter and like On Iowa (facebook.com/oniowacrg) on Facebook.
One of the most anticipated games on Iowa's 2017 schedule comes a week after what turned out to be one of the weirdest. On this edition of the On Iowa Podcast, 11 Hawkeyes talk about the win over North Texas, from penalties, to injuries, to second-half success and discuss this week's matchup against No. 4 Penn State: the 41-14 loss in 2016, the Nittany Lions' weapons on both sides of the ball, how they can pull the upset and more. The release of the 2020 and 2021 Big Ten football schedules Tuesday revealed Iowa will end the season against Wisconsin those years instead of Nebraska. On this edition of the On Iowa Podcast, Iowa AD Gary Barta gives his thoughts on that news. Plus, seven Hawkeyes discuss what worked against Iowa State, what needs to be fixed and how they're preparing for their final non-conference game against North Texas. I talk the sticky points of Iowa football with the Land of Ten's Scott Dochterman. Of course, a ton of you know that Scott worked at The Gazette for 10 years before becoming a Land of Ten-ner last year. It was his idea to start this podcast, which has been around since 2010. I write "his idea," but it's a helluva lot more than just that. This podcasting gear would probably still be gathering dust in a closet without Scott figuring it out. One day, after going all Doc Brown from "Back to the Future," Scott emerged from the cubicle with a eureka and, boom, the On Iowa podcast breathed its first life. It went on to have a few more lives. I quit that one time because of frustrating equipment snafus. We got new portable equipment and Scott went and figured that out, too. And we've been back on track. Until today. The #oniowapod will be Mike Hlas and me this fall, starting at the end of the month. It's simply business. Everyone wearing the same jersey. Nothing else to it. I've loved doing the pod with Scott. He set a standard and I tried to keep up my end of the bargain. We reminisce some at the end of the podcast. Never say never in this crazy business, so we're good and we'll see how the sails sail and keep an open mind for something in the future. But we also had a real #oniowapod. We have similar ideas on the hotspots. You know them by now -- WR, DT, special teams. Um, James Butler didn't come here because Iowa was his favorite Big Ten team. Maybe that's the cast, but he came here to play football. We don't know how it'll turn out, but, breaking news, he's going to be eating some off of Akrum Wadley's plate. Probably. So, anyway, brace yourselves for that. We got through a podcast with zero non-conference schedule talk. Mark it down, dude. You guys were hungry for one of these and you had a lot of Twitter questions. Night games -- Don't know, but you should know that all times are on the table every week this year in the B1G. (I think Penn State and Ohio State are strong possibilities.) QB battle? -- Depth charts and insurance policies and, hey, did we talk ourselves into Peyton Mansell being a contender for this job? I think we did. Brandon Snyder return -- I think I might've talked myself out of that, just given the position he plays and the stop-and-start stress the life of a Big Ten safety puts on a knee. High on Fant -- And Hockenson, for that matter. And Beyer. OK, all of the tight ends have value. We broke down how a four-TE offense might look. (Yes, we did that.) What would it take to get Iowa 10 wins -- 2,800 yards passing. Basketball expectations -- Scott said 23 wins. With the schedule that's just been released, why not? Yes, this isn't a great year for Iowa not to have an established punter. But Ryan Gersonde is the one with a scholarship. Biggest surprise? Biggest disappointment? You gotta listen to the pod. Once again, thanks for everything Scott did for the pod. Without him, there wouldn't have been one. Mike and I will be podcasting on Thursday afternoons. The show will be an hour. I think there will be Facebook Live elements (details still being worked out). I look forward to it. Of course, it'll never beat the best podcast in the world, which would've been someone recording the conversations (Scott, Mike and I) during our drives around Big Ten country the last . . . whoa . . . almost 20 years. I'll never laugh harder.
